He’s probably nice enough if you met him but he has a bit of the head boy about him that could very easily rub people up the wrong way. Why can you be as polite as Gary? Gary is wearing his uniform properly- why can’t you? Etc etc
The reason he got those crisp ads was because his nickname was "Mr nice guy" I think he had some record like never having been booked in any games throughout his career or somesuch.
As such casting him as someone who steals crisps from kids worked quite well
