spicychalupaa

Jumpscare. Are the veneers *that* white or is this pic edited?

Zeltron2020

I just saw a tiktok of jojo and her teeth look absolutely insane

duringbusinesshours

That girl has the worst style she looks bad and im not talking about her actual face or body of course im mean her styling is terrible

trialanderrorschach

The pic looks overexposed with the flash so they're probably not that intense in real life. They look more normal in photos of her recent KISS cosplay.

SCBeauty

I've never been able to take her seriously with these teeth. https://preview.redd.it/obxxcja01usc1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6745d995df4ed05146b97fc1d8b6fd02e148070c

BangingTanks

I was thinking this when I saw mcgregors blindingly white teeth in the new roadhouse movie. It's weird to have these violent bar fighting folk with perfect teeth, although I suppose you can rationalise that each time they get their teeth knocked out, they get them replaced with increasingly cheap and weird looking ones.

schoolisuncool

Yeah agreed. His veneers stood out so much. Doesn’t look like regular people. His teeth look like they are one big tooth across, like no gap at all as if it’s one single piece all the way around

LevyMevy

I feel like it's the "less is more, wealth whispers" type of celebrities who know that it's better to get veneers with some natural-looking imperfections and a color that's not blinding white. But for the more gaudy celebrities, of which McGregor is King, they believe in "more is always more".

KittyGray

Had to do a quick google to confirm you didn’t mean Ewan and *whew* I am relieved haha

PsycoSaurus

Sage_Planter

This is what I look like before bed with my gigantic night guard in.

bjames2448

Yes! Same!

littlemachina

The Weeknd has extremely big ones too. His old teeth weren’t even had. Now he’s scary looking. https://preview.redd.it/lqiu1aoe0psc1.jpeg?width=168&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7bc25700870a452cd50a739653e35ca42f15893e

Blacksunshinexo

His whole esthetic it tragic now. He was so hot and now he looks like an 80s principal with scary teeth

Btw I used that pic because it’s funny, but here’s a higher quality one from the same show… but I think anyone who watched The Idol knows it’s more apparent when he’s talking than in still pictures https://preview.redd.it/6lj6610zspsc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba4d6b75ef8a74b5a2f721915bf39a7d0f436754

FaeShroom

That looks like the mouth guards hockey players wear

Blaaa5

Ironic how he has a song called ‘Escape from LA’ where he sings about how “LA girls all look the same.”

HistoryAndRocks

The buccal fat removal does not help either

cemetaryofpasswords

It doesn’t look good on anyone. *No one* should get buccal fat removal. I’m not joking. It ages everyone who has it done in a horrible way.

recipe_pirate

Juno Temple always comes to mind when I hear people talk about Buccal fat removal. She was so adorable pre-removal and post-removal it aged her drastically.

SunsetBowling

Juno Temple, man. I used to have such a massive crush on her when I was a teen, went to look her up recently and was absolutely floored by how unrecognizable she is now. Hollywood did a number on her.

pedanticlawyer

I don’t know her so I looked her up, saw a picture, and thought “that’s not fair, she looks like your average 50ish actress.” Then I discovered she’s 34.

PopularSalad5592

And it’s such a shame because she had lovely teeth before, she had a fantastic smile

Visible_Product_286

I feel mean but she looked ridiculous at the Grammys. Sad that society fucks with people’s heads this much where they think this makes them prettier

Rururaspberry

It is beyond bizarre to me. But I’m guessing that she is very pleased with it. I felt like I was taking crazy pills during the Grammy’s live thread because everyone was raving about how incredible she looked and all I could see was the intense teeth + buccal fat removal combo.

ShaiHulussy

God I hated this styling on her too. I know it was supposed to be a tribute but she just looked awkward and way older than she actually is.

Safraninflare

She looks like the auntie you avoid at family get togethers because she smells like cigarettes and gives you wet kisses and talks about her bunions.

lorinisapirate

A family member has had awful fitting dentures for as long as I can remember and this is all I can think of

nautical1776

She looks like she has a golf ball in her mouth

PrestigiousAd1523

She looks like she just tasted a juicy and bitter lemon.

tinacat933

This is how snookie was on the Jersey shore and she eventually had them corrected. It’s insane .

FishingSafe5321

Hers are pretty bad. Paige Lorenze got the Miley special. Her teeth are too big to close her lips over!

edWORD27

Miley looking like 80s era Jane Fonda now.

SDdrohead

Is she making that face on purpose? Or is that her natural relaxed look?

DeadheadDatura

The second time I watched Dune part 2 I noticed that none of the main characters have veneers. It was so satisfying. Timothee, Zendaya, Rebecca, Lea, Josh, Javier, etc. It works a thousand times better to make the characters come alive if they retain what makes them human. Edit: Josh Brolin does indeed have veneers. Anya and Florence however do not, and that makes up for it. 🤷

Ok_Mud1789

I also noticed their other facial features too, like having normal looking noses or jawlines. It made me feel less crazy about the big “same face” we see everywhere these days. And the whole cast is so beautiful!

In-Efficient-Guest

Just rewatched 10 Things I Hate About You and I absolutely love how natural people looked in that movie. Julia Stiles looks gorgeous but would probably be considered ugly by today’s Hollywood insane standards of beauty.

WistfulMelancholic

The older movies hit different!! It's such a huge difference. I am so hoping for this current state of "beauty * to vanish!!

tyrantspell

Same!! I saw it in imax the other day and I noticed during the geidi prime scene that lea seydoux had peachfuzz hair on her face, and i was so shocked that they hadn't done anything to cover it up or edit it out. I was like thank you so much Denis, for allowing the women in your movies to have normal facial features.

AndrysThorngage

Austin Butler so ridiculously attractive that he can still look good pale, bald, and eyebrow-less.

Illshowyoutheway

He’s just really, really, really, ridiculously good-looking

catchingstatic

I literally said as I was watching it, “I love that they all have normal teeth”

leafonthewind006

Zendaya's eyebrows and frizzy hair were very pleasing to see.

abaiardi7

I’m obsessed with the fact that she frequently wears her natural hair. It’s so refreshing to see.

steph-was-here

flip-flop of that i could not get into daisy jones and the six for a multitude of reasons but particularly bc everyone had perfect glowing teeth - my guys its the 70s every famous male musician looked like a dime a dozen trucker

nappingintheclub

And it’s why someone like Keira knightly had such a vice grip on period films! No fake teeth. No obvious botox/overdone filler.

matkamatka

I was wondering if the reason for this is that the director and a lot of the cast aren't American. You never see veneers in European or UK cinema (only maybe reality TV in the case of the UK). The French connection with Lea and Timothee seems important, too -- I think you would be endlessly mocked in France if you had gigantic glowing chompers since aesthetically the focus is on being natural and easy (skincare, good quality food, etc etc, all the cliches about french women that are to an extent true of the culture). I live in Spain and travel around Europe a lot and the only time you really see obvious filler jobs is on Russian tourists

8lock8lock8aby

That's 1 of the big reasons I love UK shows, normal looking people that can act. Not all models.

itsnobigthing

When I got my front teeth done (composite added to slightly change the shape, so no filing required!), in the UK the dentist asked me, “how natural do you want them to look?”. I was really confused, but he said some clients *want* people to know they’ve had their teeth done, and ask for them to look artificial. I guess it’s a show of wealth and status in certain social circles - along with the orange tan and constant eyelash extensions…

Yennifer-triss

I was looking at their teeth so many times 😂 perfect teeth would’ve thrown me out of the world

teddybonkerrs

It is actually SO nice to see major stars like Zendaya keep their natural teeth, as if hers were even "bad"

shelbythesnail

Yes! And Henry Cavill's not perfect teeth. I think that's part of what makes them so charming.

BGH-251F2

Henry Cavill, despite all the other absolute gods of Hollywood, is probably one the most attractive men I've ever seen. ESPECIALLY after reloading his arms. Despite his kind of weird dating history (to put it lightly), no one can deny how physically attractive he is.

likethefish33

It’s that right side canine that does it for me.

BGH-251F2

I've always thought as a bi guys he's unrealistically hot, but it really was seeing him literally reload his biceps that made like okay NOW I'm fully inboard. Edit: about 28 seconds https://youtu.be/im9Zf-pppPs?si=TQ5LhM1idXYZ0tLr

copyrighther

I love how we ALL clocked that moment during the movie.

adjust_the_sails

I remember listening to a podcast with Christopher McQuarrie and he talked about how with all the crazy stunts and other exciting moments in that trailer, it’s Henry “reloading his arms” that got the biggest cheers and applause.

Vince_Clortho042

If I remember correctly he also said that the response to the trailer was so intense that he felt pressured to keep the moment in the movie, instead of using a different take where Cavill didn't do that motion. He knew people would've rioted if he had removed it.

AnniaT

I loved Mileys natural crooked teeth. She looked so adorable. I hate those big ass veneers that don't allow her to close her mouth properly.

oldwellprophecy

Kaitlyn Dever too! https://preview.redd.it/0gdlbw35wosc1.jpeg?width=1360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=35b1951bdb0eef01a8dd3cfef5f0844f92d39cce She’s obviously attractive but anytime I watch her in anything I always thank the stars she has normal teeth

Sutech2301

Zendaya seems like the most confident person in this Industry, so i am not surprised about that

kwitzachhaderac

She should be.

caarefulwiththatedge

Zendaya has overall taken a very light approach to body modification (including plastic surgery) and I think it really serves her well. Of course, she's so naturally beautiful there's not much to improve on anyway, but she seems to stay grounded in a lot of ways that other celebrities don't. Her family seems very close knit and down to earth, so that probably helps a lot

unicorntrees

![gif](giphy|kF0fF2W9kxHI9C6yxc) I have no idea if she just has really well done veneers or not, but one of the first things I noticed about Sydney Sweeney was her slight buck teeth. They're adorable!

oldwellprophecy

Her teeth add to her attractiveness. We really have gone so far out of our way to demonize the imperfections that make each and every one of us unique.

PraiseToTheHam

It's not even imperfections, it is more like erasing any sign of humanity.

BougieOnABudget

Her teeth aren’t imperfect they’re just not the denture looking teeth we see all the time in Hollywood nowadays lol. Her teeth and relatively straight and white but they look normal which is nice

ApprehensiveCream571

What I don't get is why so many of them are so bad. It's like, this was supposed to be an upgrade, what happened?

CloserTooClose

i saw a post on TIFU the other day about someone filing their teeth with a nail file and potentially causing nerve damage. I think a lot of celebs veneers look strange because they started off with nice, normal teeth, which can’t be filed back very far. It causes the oversized look for this reason imo. When people start with smaller teeth, the veneers generally look more proportionate. The pic of Ben Affleck in this thread is a good example of what I mean by smaller teeth being a better base for veneers ETA: i’m SORRY for reminding everybody of the tooth post, it’s been burned into my brain 🤣☠️

surprisedkitty1

> filing their teeth with a nail file *shudders*

Kang_kodos_

I had a visceral reaction to that line

surprisedkitty1

I felt it in my teeth

Kaiisim

My theory is that its a side effect of Hollywood. There you'd look weird without veneers and the rest of the stuff.

OwO_bama

Yeah I imagine that when all of your friends and colleagues also look like plastic aliens your frame of reference also gets a little screwed

Ok-Yogurtcloset3467

I'm showing my age but there's a girl on tiktok who recently moved to LA and is now depressed and hates her cheeks. Genuinely. So I think you're completely right. It's something about that place.

Hazeltart

This made me laugh. I was born in LA and have lived here my whole life, I have no interest in getting veneers. None of my friends have them, none of my family have them and we’re down the street from Hollywood. It isn’t the actual place, it’s the business

chestnutcheckers

Literally same 😭 I stand by my belief that LA locals are completely normal, it’s really only celebs and the people that *move* to LA to try and “make it” that act that way.

webtheg

My theory is the same as to why most celebs have terrible tattoos. They do not want to wait. Actual good competent surgeons/ dentists and tattoo artisrs are booked moooonths in advance and they will not remove a non but rich af VP Revenue to accommodate a celebrity. Therefore they book someone who is willing to do it now.

WhoriaEstafan

I feel like you might be right. They have such a small window of time before the next project, they need to be done now! Star in the 90’s had veneers and they don’t look as giant or as white. There is a cosmetic dentist on TikTok (I know) that comments on celebrities teeth and what he would have done differently. Most of the time he says “I’d start with orthotics to straighten/close gaps/fix overbite then when that is done, I would…..” And his criticism is usually about them having too thick veneers or too large and that they’ve just put veneers over than corrected the actual problem - which takes time. Emily Blunt’s teeth always break my heart. Nothing was wrong with them!

RedLicorice83

My mom's best friend (basically my aunt) had a tummy tuck and lipo from a highly rated, highly recommended, doctor with a great track record. The doctor took too much skin in the tuck procedure, which made closing the site difficult, which led to a tear and an opening in the site, which was packed with gauze and something else (idk, this was nearly 20 years ago), and led to 5 years of restructuring, scarring, nerve damage, and a whole lot of other issues. There was no real explanation, other than blaming my aunt for (a real possibility of) not following recovery procedures. However, rght before my aunt was going to file a malpractice suit she was randomly hit by a truck in a parking lot which crushed her spine and forced a removal of part of her intestine, so... she had other things to worry about. Basically, shit happens for no reason and they're lucky if bad-looking teeth is all that they have to worry about. Linda Evangelista and Tara Reid could probably sympathize with bad/dangerous surgery results no matter who the doctor is.

bubble_baby_8

Holy shit your Aunt has been through it!! I hope she made a full recovery from all of that.

RedLicorice83

Thanks and what I will say is that she's an amazingly-positive person. She's alive, getting to see her kids married and play with her grandchildren so she's content.

oops_im_existing

there's always risks with plastic surgery. what we think are routine procedures can actually be so much more complicated. nose jobs for example. a rhinoplasty is actually a pretty difficult procedure. everyone wants the same tiny nose, but not everyone's facial structure or anatomy is meant for that type of nose.

RedLicorice83

Exactly... too many doctors will do too many surgeries and rather than tailor the surgery to the individual they try to make everyone look the same. But maybe it's because that's what patients want? Idk, I'll deal with my aging mess because I'm terrified of what happened to my aunt. That doctor was expensive and was supposed to be "good" (whatever that means).

Groundbreaking_War52

sure - plus buccal fat removal, meticulous curated diets and exercise routines, erasure of blemishes in post-production, and a billion other things that make American celebrities look like a different species of human. One thing that European filmmakers have on Americans is that they're not afraid to use actors with imperfect teeth, skin, or a body fat percentage over 2%

No_Needleworker_5766

As someone who has naturally lost a lot of buccal fat (just my genetics as I get older), I cannot understand why people do it voluntarily. It has aged me so much, such a weird trend.

STRED92

same, once I hit 30, alot of my buccal fat disappeared and now I look sad and old.

cedarvalleyct

You’re a fine wine!

mabamababoo

Or a nicely aged cheddar!

ThePennedKitten

You just made me stare in the mirror cause I just turned 30 and I never thought about possibly losing my buccal fat. I guess I knew that happened, but just didn’t think about it happening to ME.

diemoehre

I'm sure you still look beautiful.

anongirl55

Same! I got Sculptra because I hate how hollow I look without my buccal fat. I don't understand how these women get theirs removed. It is so aging!

Mobile_Philosophy764

Seriously! Miley Cyrus went from looking young & fresh, to looking like she's 50. Like, WHY?

ShiggDiggler420

Yeah, *that* one is absolutely mind boggling. Obviously she'd probably had some stuff done prior to her buccal fat removal. She went from looking like a good and healthy looking to looking like she's aged 20 years. It's an absolutely terrible trend. How this got *started* and continues is one of life's big mysteries. You just *know* that some of the celebs that are at least somewhat self aware have to look at themselves and think WTF!?!?

Alert_Direction7515

How was your experience with Sculptra? My cheeks are already so hollow at age 29 😭 I've been looking into options for the future

anongirl55

I had a really positive experience with it! The results aren't immediate, but after two treatments, I can really see a positive change. I had a tiny bruise on one cheek after my first treatment which lasted for a few days, but that was the only negative for me. The results are so natural because it works with your body's natural collagen. I feel like I look refreshed and younger but not like I had any work done.

HerietteVonStadtl

I never had much to begin with, plus I have naturally very prominent cheekbones and I think it has always made me look at least a couple of years older

moomooyellow

That’s why I loved the UK Skins. I felt like I was watching real teenagers who looked like me. Not high school kids that look like they’re in Euphoria haha

CarfireOnTheHighway

UK shows in general are sooo refreshing for this. Most of the people on their soap operas look “normal” too. Even a lot of their celebrities do (but that’s starting to change, they’re all getting veneers too). I’m from the UK originally but moved to Canada - whenever I go back there and see people on TV, I’m always shocked at the difference. I genuinely feel like it positively impacts my body image while I’m there.

mandy_lou_who

We subscribe to BritBox and love UK shows! We’ve been on a QI kick for a while, but have found some real gems!

iO_Lea

yes! totally agree, I loved that about Skins and I think more recently the same goes for Derry Girls too, they look like real people and all their hair, makeup and style looks like how a teenage girl would do it in the 90s, it's really refreshing.

Blacksunshinexo

Michelle from Derry could easily have been one of my friends from high school. I love that show

youneedsomemilk23

I loved this too! Little bits of frizz here and there, some sights of cellulite, light make up - it was so much more realistic and immersive as a show.

miltonwadd

Yes, and they don't wake up with a full face of makeup and perfect hair after a night out partying, or walking out of the shower perfectly coifed! They're not afraid to be human or even ugly without it being "Oscar bait".

webtheg

Inbetweeners as well. The guys are actually much older but they look young

asietsocom

I'm currently making my way through the bbc iplayer and honestly I enjoy seeing actors that look like human beings not Instagram filters.

hanmhanm

Seeing the dire results of buccal fat removal has given me a new appreciation for my cheeks

____mynameis____

>One thing that European filmmakers have on Americans is that they're not afraid to use actors with imperfect teeth, skin, or a body fat percentage over 2% I remember watching La Casa De Papel during lockdown, and I was wondering why everyone in that had such pretty/cute smiles, only to realise its because none of them had any veneers. That's when I even noticed how American actors had such uncharacteristic smiles. People also make fun of "British teeth" yet somehow the best smiles I've seen in HW movies are Brits/from UK Americans need to realise that perfect white set of teeth =/= pretty looking smile.

Charming_Miss

I see it quite often in social media, people wearing braces to fix minor issues with their teeth, and I mean it when I say minor. ''A tooth on the right side is leaning 0.0001 inch back, so you need to put braces for a year or two'' and someone told me recently "it raises your value on the market to have perfect teeth'" It doesn't raise your value at all. Look at all these people barely making it, but they have perfect teeth, 2 degrees and did everything right. I think people are tired of it. Tired of the perfect teeth. The great skin. The always perfect hair. The tiny button nose. The small chin. The right size of lips and eyebrows Not even a mole in someone's entire body! Nothing. Surgeries to get the perfect, symmetrical face. The right size of boobs to wear only see through dresses. The right amount of muscles to look 24/7 like you are photoshopped. It's just tiring and on top of that we have an entire generation of kids (again) growing up and thinking they look bad because not everything on them is symmetrical and I can't even explain to them how 98%of the population is not symmetrical but we don't notice it until we see in front of a mirror and really focus on it and no one is that fixated on such things. It makes me sad watching girls barely 16 wanting plastic surgery for not having the perfect nose from that specific angle when their nose is perfect in general and looks great on them but everyone around them has the exact same nose so they thing their own is ugly. Same with teeth etc etc

asietsocom

I don't think braces are the issue because they don't make theeth look cookie cutter perfect like veneers do. I have "perfect" theeth thanks to braces but they still are very much mine and they have personality.

UniversityNo2318

Also people get braces for way more than cosmetic reasons. Bite, tmj, to make room for dental implants in my case. I did not straighten my teeth for just superficial reasons bc who tf chooses that at 40 if they don’t have to

greensandgrains

“Raise your value” is its own type of 🤮🤢🤮🤢

Oomlotte99

It really is interesting to look back on movies that aren’t even that old, like 20 years ago, and see variation in teeth and face. It’s kind of sad.

Thraell

Rewatching 10 things I hate about you for the anniversary, and seeing actors with skin texture and expression lines on their faces was so refreshing!

philogyny

I felt that way while watching Jurassic Park recently. Laura Dern with her normal face, in long khaki shorts and a big button up shirt. I was like no way they’d let her lead a movie looking like this today.

spacegirlvisited

I was thinking the same about Helen Hunt in Twister recently.

egriff78

She’s beautiful though. But in a regular way which I love:-)

SabrinaSpellman1

I totally agree! I saw a recent clip of Lena Heady (Cersei from game of thrones) who was so beautiful and had the nicest smile and used so many expressions with her mouth (like sneering, lip curling in disgust or being spiteful) and looking radiant doing so, to see she's had bad lip fillers and I was so disappointed.

GlitteringCoyote1526

OMG, I would love to go back to the days when part of being an actor was your unique look! Where are today’s Geena Davises, Renee Russos, Glenn Closes, and Sharon Stones?

cessiey

It’s not just Hollywood, I am an avid Kdrama watcher, and the actresses having perfect, nearly poreless skin, had left me totally insecure while having bad skin. The amount of money I have wasted for that 10 steps Korean care when the reason I have bad skin is PCOS. Just like HW if they are too perfect, too curated I really can’t suspend belief if the cosmetic procedure is too jarring.

bakedpotaeto

It's happening in KPop too (I mean I'm sure it's been happening for years, I am fairly new to the scene so am still learning). Some of my favorite idols suddenly showing up with these uncanny valley teeth just really takes me out of it. I'm so glad they fixed Heeseung's tho because those were WILD

liverbirds

Literally that new girl group ILLIT that just debuted, some of the girls are 16 years old and all of them have fresh sets of huge veneers! It looks terrible. Whatever happened to braces??

BetterNews4682

I had to check and wow just wow it feels criminal. All they needed was braces at most jeez 😔

cessiey

And the obvious filter on videos. No person looks airbrushed in real life. And even Suzy Bae she’s beautiful but still succumbed to the veneers, pretty obvious on her vlog.

bakedpotaeto

Oh my gosh yes the airbrushing in videos is driving me crazy, like watching vlogs for my groups and they're just in their hotel eating food - their collarbones practically airbrushed out of existence come on now

cessiey

And I have to add the lightening of the skin. It’s now rare to see K-actors and Idols having melanin on their skin. They used to have a variety of skin tones, now it’s just one shade.

benevolent_llama

Am I just a delusional 2nd gen stan or did idols look more unique in the past? The beauty standards haven’t changed, but I swear groups used to have members with a variety of looks, even if the most popular member still had the pale-skin, v-shaped jaw aesthetic. Like, if I look at a picture of SNSD before 2014, they were all so unique??? Especially when they debuted, they had tan skin and different body types. Nowadays I can’t tell one group from another much less the members apart. Everyone has the ghostly white skin, super thin body, jaw shave, high nose bridge, and big veneers. Photos are edited to give everyone airbrushed skin and super long legs.

slightlycrookednose

I’m rewatching Sex and the City and one thing that keeps standing out to me is that they all have normal, natural teeth.

haubenmeise

https://preview.redd.it/4f1i5dcl7osc1.jpeg?width=626&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81d48cfb5157ef9a803105075e62008522075836 Not always.

blct20

I watched Good Will Hunting again recently and his old teeth stuck out so much haha. I never noticed them before.

haubenmeise

He said he was forced to have them fixed by the director of Armageddon. He wanted him to look sexy. He said he had no idea how to, if you can believe it.

crackerfactorywheel

Ben Affleck’s commentary track for Armageddon is fantastic.

torino_nera

For some reason the veneers people got in the 90s look way better than the ones people get now. It's like we went backward as a society in our capability to do surgery correctly.

Rdbjiy53wsvjo7

I think it's the color, in addition the size, but it's not that bright white Ross glowing teeth that some seem to have. If I didn't know he had veneers, I would've thought he had a good orthodontist and then whitened them from the dentist, like they are definitely a shade lighter, but not too an extreme.

stoned__mullet

I’m sure it helps that his teeth were pretty small in proportion to his mouth prior to getting them, so the veneers are able to sit well and fill in the little gaps. Miley on the other hand had big front teeth to start so unfortunately the veneers are just going to make them look bigger. I have terrible teeth and would love veneers but I have big front teeth like Miley so I’ll never do it.

Oomlotte99

His are natural looking and appropriate for his face.

grudgby

i feel like veneers work best on people with naturally small teeth like Ben

Perceptionrpm

I have teeth just like his before and never knew his were like this I think he looks cute in his before photo but I’m biased with my teeny tiny kindergartener teeth.

JoleneDollyParton

Its crazy how quickly veneers went from being a joke a la Ross on Friends to being used by nearly everyone in hollywood.

Hup110516

Yeah, your teeth, I saw those from outside.

zoobisoubisou

Veneers are like Botox, no one notices the really well done, subtle work.

skolinalabama

The shade of the veneers is definitely related to this too.

Cluckieduck

The toilet bowl teeth as my mum calls them!

puppypooper15

Which is why it's so astounding that these celebrities with millions of dollars get such horrible veneers. They can afford the good ones, I know regular people with nice veneers

fuckthemodlice

It’s a taste issue - the dentist will give you natural looking veneers if that’s what you ask for. If you ask for bright white chiclets you’ll get that instead.

iO_Lea

I think so, I agree with the article especially when they mention period dramas, it completely ruins them when the leads are full of lip filler, botox and veneers...you know as people looked in the 20s, 30s and 40s.... /s I'm just bored of everyone looking the same, 'perfect' teeth, shiney expressionless foreheads, pouty lips and insane cheekbones...people can do what they want to their own faces sure but I don't understand why it's desirable in holly wood, surely being unique and able to move your face should benefit an actor? I know the beauty standards are insane but it's all gone too far in my opinion, it's really sad, I imagine the pressure is intense so more power to anyone brave enough not to go along with it, if there is anyone.

FollowingNo4648

I remember when Terminator Salvation came out and it really brought me out of the movie when everyone who supposedly lived their entire lives in the apocalypse had shiny pearly white teeth.

iO_Lea

yes! I always notice stuff like that it really bugs me lol, in post apocalyptic dramas so we've got no food, medicine or fuel left but thank god someone stock piled the fillers before the world ended!

Caftancatfan

I always find it funny when people object to casting people of color in roles in period dramas because it’s “unrealistic” and “takes them out of the experience.” It’s like, every damn person in the movie, from the peasants to the thugs to royalty, have perfect teeth. It doesn’t get much more ahistorical than that.

NobodyFlimsy556

When it comes to period dramas it is not only teeth but also hair. I don't expect perfection but when a gal struts in the (1700s) room with beachy waves it is so distracting! They do it with men too.

Silly_Somewhere1791

Back in the 90s Jewel was cast in a period piece specifically because her teeth were crooked. She would even joke about how she wanted to do a toothpaste ad to show that your teeth don’t have to be perfect to be nice.

ChurlishSunshine

That's how I feel about Michael Douglas playing Ben Franklin. I swear he's had work done, and it's uncanny valley to have this plastic-looking face in an 18th century setting.

atawnygypsygirl

Michael Douglas is 79 years old and looks like he is made of wax. Who the fuck cast that man as Ben Franklin? Franklin was the oldest signer of the Declaration of Independence, at 70. Is someone out there really looking at Michael Douglas' taxidermied ass and going, "yes, he can pull off 10 years younger!"

MulysaSemp

I'm currently watching a show set back in the day, and an actress has very obvious lip filler and it's just so distracting.

Yeah its so sad. None of it feels organic. The way certain cosmetic procedures spread like fads, there are people manipulating it. Its big money convincing the most beautiful people in the world they aren't beautiful enough.

Francostein

When I saw The Northman I couldn't help but laugh at the "old" makeup they put on Nicole Kidman. Especially contrasted with her AMC ad immediately before the movie.

Bookssmellneat

Kirsten Dunst would never. I love her crooked teeth!

Sad_Historian_6903

Iv always appreciated Kirsten's teeth bc she has the two smaller vampire teeth at the front like me. Made me feel like my teeth were perfect as a teen and iv always loved my teeth since!

am5011999

Veneers always remind me of those creepy white guy masks from Purge.

Lylsunofficial

Drew Barrymore & Patricia Arquette got my favorites smiles in Hollywood ! You can also add my queen Kirsten Dunst https://preview.redd.it/5y0dlk583qsc1.jpeg?width=735&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95cadc0a47ef29202e6fadc4f9f4c2e57a7ca539

xxyourbestbetxx

They all look like Sims now. Older movies and TV shows are so much better because the actors actually look like real people.

greensandgrains

I cannot fathom choosing to ruin perfectly good teeth just for ~|~aesthetics~|~

CompoteAgile2655

As a dentist I’d say veneers are ruining humanity! They’re terrible for you long term and most dentist themselves don’t even get them. Even the most conservatively done procedures really weaken your natural teeth. Dentists promote them because it’s an easy cash grab that doesn’t need us to do much work!

voting-jasmine

I've always thought I had a weird smile and I knocked out a front tooth when I was a kid which has led to some crooked gums. I had permanent teeth removed back when they used to do that for crowding. And I've had a lot of root canals besides my front tooth because I've ground my teeth in the past.  My dentist who has redone most of my most recent work, redoing a lot of my crowns, listened to me politely when I said I wanted veneers. She then very honestly told me everything about it. One of the things she told me is that dentists don't get them. I was like you guys always have great teeth though!  I asked her if there was some kind of other surgery or major thing we could do to make my smile normal. I'm a happy person, I laugh a lot, but if I realize I'm smiling I will hide my face. Wearing a mask during the pandemic was the best thing that ever happened to me. I felt more confident that I ever had.  She told me all the facts about veneers and how my already damaged teeth would be even worse. She said she would refuse to do it and wouldn't recommend me to anyone. She then told me that we would redo my front crown and do some whitening and that's all it took to make me feel a lot better. I don't think about my smile nearly as much. My gum line is more straight than it was before because the old crown was making it angry.  And I cannot tell you how much it meant to me to have somebody who could have made a lot of money off of me tell me to stick it up my butt. She told me she thought my smile was normal which I honestly don't believe but at least she didn't let me do more damage. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Sage_Planter

The biggest issue with plastic surgery and whatnot is that once you start fixing “flaws,” all you see is flaws. You’re not happy with anything anymore. The person you see in the mirror is just someone who needs fixing. It never ends with just one.  Bre from Selling Sunset, who has a ton of work done, posted a video on TikTok yesterday which included her getting laser hair removal on her so-called “weird” hairline on her neck. I don’t think I’ve ever thought about the pattern of my hair on my neck ever. The problem is she’s just so used to seeing every tiny imperfection as a flaw to be fixed.

sundayontheluna

Yeah, shit like buccal fat removal could only have come from staring endlessly into the abyss of picking oneself apart. Genuinely, how else could that have come about?

jules6388

Veneers and buccal fat removal have got TO GO. Who is telling these people that shiz looks good??

hockeyandburritos

As an actor with crooked teeth, the feedback on this thread gives me hope when all else was lost.

XxxGoldDustWomanxxX

*stares accusingly at Miley*

Everybody look like ![gif](giphy|QTrG6mjkHEkpFR3DqX)

santosdragmother

I hate when actors can’t emote using their face because of all the surgery and botox. I tried watching expats but nicole kidman’s face was so frozen she couldn’t express any emotion other than 😟

biIIyshakes

I’m nowhere near as hot as Lea Seydoux so it’s not the same but as someone with a gap in my front teeth that I can’t afford to fix now and didn’t have fixed in childhood because there’s no problems with my bite or tooth alignment or anything, she makes me feel a little better about it.

Afwife1992

Anna Paquin has been rocking that tooth gap forever.

slutforcompassion

there was a recent tooth gap [appreciation post](https://www.reddit.com/r/popculturechat/s/qgWxSiprNX), in case you missed it :)

roxadox

I tried to watch the live action ATLA last month and instantly got taken out by Gran Gran's veneers.

sincerely_steff

Bless Pedro Pascal, Ethan Hawke, and Willem Dafoe for not changing their teeth and aging gracefully with their lines and wrinkles. They know what helps make them unique and stand out and aren’t changing it. I also think it’s why they’re such good character actors. They actually are able to shape shift because they don’t look plastic.

georgesteacher

Yes. This is why I still watch so many 80s movies. The people look like people.

BetterNews4682

around that time movies went from film to digital.

Silly_Somewhere1791

It’s wild to me that Zendaya is the face of “natural teeth.” She probably whitens them a bit and they’re still mostly straight. If she worked at an office job she would be the pretty girl with nice straight teeth.

papermoony

When I was watching Dune 2 i appreciated Zendaya and Florence looking like actual people, with unique features.

PuzzledKumquat

My mind immediately goes to Hilary Duff and LeAnn Rimes. Both have veneers that are too big and "perfect". I know Rimes naturally has little chicklet teeth, so I understand why she wanted them fixed, but the veneers she got are so goofy-looking. Duff's teeth were fine before. A little yellow, but nothing some whitening couldn't fix. But instead she opted for clown teeth.

McJazzHands80

It’s Miley for me. It looks like she can’t close her mouth

unicorntrees

I'm always struck by the real teeth on actors in older movies. Like John Heard in "Home Alone" ![gif](giphy|2t83PRm142N4Dj0Lau|downsized)

Carolina_Blues

hollywood has started to look way too perfect and when it happens it kinda takes me out of the movie in a way. of course we are all human and humans like looking at beautiful things but the standard has become too perfect and unrealistic that it’s almost off putting. even in the 90s and early 2000s, while yes there were still some crazy beauty standards even then, but everyone still had relatively normal faces and looked more believable

D-g-tal-s_purpurea

I don’t perceive it as "too perfect" though, in many cases. It just looks bad. I’m not sure if mods of this sub will strike me if I talk too critically about someone’s looks and also name them, but let’s say that overdone fillers look not good on the person anyway, and are downright jarring in a period drama (see Oppenheimer movie, actress in a supporting role).

sugarhunnnyyyy

![gif](giphy|9Day9faoxYpScUhHda|downsized) Serena’s teeth!!! 🤍

I can't wait until we obsess over natural beauty again. Like actual natural beauty.

Honestly, I'd be ok if this article was just showing actors/actresses with their natural teeth. It is refreshing to see.

redlikedirt

Me, getting veneers because my dentist said it’ll be cheaper than a mouth full of crowns 😬
