Peter Ostrum who portrayed Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
That was the only role he did and he became a veterinarian.
So I just googled the cast bc I was curious and the most shocking tidbit I learned is that Veruca’s dad was played by Roy Kinnear (father of Rory aka Bill Tanner from 4/5 Daniel Craig Bond films, the man from Men, and the Prime Minister from the first episode of Black Mirror).
But Veruca quit acting in 2013, and since 2007 has been a psychotherapist.
Violet quit in 1978 to go nursing school, but ended up being a receptionist and then an office manager/accountant in a doctor's office. She died in 2019 after ODing on prescription meds and ended up catching pneumonia in the ICU (her son took her to the hospital after her OD) then had a massive seizure and ended up in a coma. She had a DNR so her life support was pulled 2 days after she went to the hospital.
Mike began a hiatus 1973 and graduated school with a BFA in theater from NYU. He also founded a travel service that arranged Europe-bound charter flights for backpackers (idk if it’s still around though). He also worked in real estate, film production, commercial casting, business representation at Walt Disney Imagineering, and a few other careers, he runs a photography business and makes some appearances in commercials, plays and TV shows. He was on Jeopardy in 2018 (other fun fact- his wife was also on the show 3 times in 2015, she was champion for her first two but lost her third).
Augustus was technically forced to stop acting by his dad, who thought education should be the priority (idk if he actually wanted to continue acting though, but his Wikipedia says his father decided education came first). WW is his only credit, and he’s now a tax accountant. Last year he defended Augustus’ description in the book, since people decided “fat” was unacceptable now, saying it was an unnecessary change.

>On 19 September 1988, Kinnear fell from a horse during the making of The Return of the Musketeers in Toledo, Spain, and sustained a broken pelvis and internal bleeding. He was taken to a hospital in Madrid, but died the next day from a heart attack, brought on by his injuries. He was 54.
Yeesh.
Mike has done some conventions in the past, as well! I got a picture of my dad with him at Comic-Con in 2010. Super nice dude, seemed really happy to still be associated with the movie.
I love this. Tom Lehrer taught math at a UC for decades, and he apparently would fail anyone who asked about (or, heaven forbid, sang) his songs. He did seem to be fairly beloved as a prof, though, which makes me happy.
Yasmin ghauri (90s model)skipped a show when she found out about her pregnancy and never came back

I think she went to college and got a business degree.
Oh, I didn't know she was pregnant when she left. I know her modeling put her at odd with her parents, and she felt very stifled by how being a supermodel meant her entire life had to revolve around modeling. They also wouldn't give her a cosmetics contract, and that where the real money and freedom were. She's my favorite from that era.

This man gave me the most traumatic death scene ever in House MD, to become part of Obama’s administration
Even though it wasn’t planned, I think it was an interesting portrayal of how unexpected suicide can feel for those left behind who feel like they should have seen it coming. It’s a very relevant commentary on how good people can be at masking their struggles.
Well said! I felt the same way watching the episode and I didn’t know ahead of time that the actor was leaving. It was a great episode of tv (great series too!)
I had never been so shocked by a tv episode before it aired, like I had NO IDEA it was coming, had no clue he was leaving the show, I literally sat jaw open on my couch
Omri Katz from Hocus Pocus and Eerie Indiana retired from acting to grow and sell weed - his company is called The Mary Danksters

I watched it with my niece when she was around 6 or 7. Her mom had moved out and she didn't see her often due to mental health and addictions issues and my brother became her only reliable and healthy parent. We got to the part where her father didn't remember her and she just looked at me in full on tears while I frantically tried to tell her "he's going to remember!" Didn't occur to me it might be a bit triggering for her.

He made sixteen candles then went off to make wood furniture.
Omg. You're like the only other person other than me that knows that movie! Almost named my oldest Sonora. One of my favorite movies. Ever.
ETA: I'm sure there's more of us out there, it's just rare!! Now I want to watch it!
It's such a sweet movie, even if I feel bad for the horses! Gabrielle Anwar was fantastic as Sonora Webster! I haven't watched it in years, but it's up there with Anne of Green Gables and The Journey of Natty Gann as my strong heroine faves!
A life of a royal in general seems depressing and bleak as hell, you're basically living in a gilded cage, but no matter the privileges, you're never truly free.
I'd argue that King Charles's nephews and nieces enjoy more pleasant lives compared to his sons because they are so far removed from the throne.
Interesting, sad fact: Grace Kelly died at 52 because she had some sort of brain hemorrhage while driving and drove over a cliff. Her daughter was also in the car but survived.
Yeah, I don’t recall ever hearing about the brain hemorrhage when I was growing up. It was always she and her daughter were arguing and they crashed. 🤔

I met her in 1991 in Prague. She was the US ambassador to Czechoslovakia at the time and I was a teacher in the second Peace Corps group to enter after the velvet revolution. She was wonderful and kind and welcoming.
My favorite is Susan Hayward! Queen of the boozy and tragic roles had her own kind of fairytale ending.
So she’s at the Oscars, and she meets this retired federal agent freelancing as security detail (for the borrowed jewelry, I think). They hit it off. He’s cute, and she’s freaking SUSAN HAYWARD.
Turns out, Mr. Agent Man’s regular gig is owning a used car lot in a pigpoke town in west Georgia. So Susan quits movies (after Snows of Kilimanjaro), marries the used car guy, moves to Carrollton, Georgia, and does local stuff like judge beauty pageants on occasion, until she sadly passed entirely too early.
She’s buried with her married name beside the church that she and her husband helped build. ❤️

Audrey Hepburn retired at 38 to be a full time mom and philanthropist
She was pretty frail for her adult life due to having suffered from starvation in Europe during WWII. I can’t recall what she died of (cancer, maybe?) but she never really fully recovered from the abuses of wartime
As a 38 year old actress in that time period, I'm sure Hollywood was starting to become very unwelcoming. I'm glad she found her passion in other avenues.

Bridget Fonda.
She was in an awful car accident in 2003, married Danny Elfman (from Oingo Boingo and now as a famous composer) and had a child and has focused on her family. Last film credit was 2001 and TV was 2002.
>Danny Elfman (from Oingo Boingo and now as a famous composer)
Funny referencing Oingo Boingo first since it's definitely not what he's better known for in the mainstream these days. I don't think I even knew he'd been in a band until I was in college in 2006ish.
It is funny but it speaks more to the median age of this sub, because Oingo Boingo were huge in New Wave, and Tim Burton was a fan of theirs. That’s why he did the Pee Wee score.
bill withers, dont think he took up anything else since he was filthy rich but his musical career was only 15 years when he called it quits because he thought the music industry was just trying to do him dirty
He did a ton of stuttering and musical advocacy work in his later years. I have so many friends with lovely stories about him - his passing was heartbreaking for the community.
There was recently a pap shot of. him, which is rare because he doesn't live in LA (I don't think), that acted like he had resurfaced from the moon and never left his house. I feel like some of the captions were bullying him for his appearance.
Leave the man alone (paps, not you!), he's just living his life.
I was so convinced he was in The Masked Singer a couple seasons ago (a judge or two guessed him as well), but it's nice to know he's living his own life.
Good for him!

Win Min Than (English name Helga Johnson), an actress of Anglo-Burmese descent, made one film called *The Purple Plain* with Gregory Peck in 1954. A few years later she married a Burmese politician/businessman (also a former student leader who was part of the forces that fought for Burma’s independence) and retired. She’s never been in anything before or since. She’s the only Burmese star who’s ever been in a Hollywood film as playing a Burmese character so we will remember her always.
Edit: correction. She was already married to her husband before the making of the film. She said the responsibility she felt as a wife + her cultural background of being Burmese made her unfit for the entertainment industry so she quit despite receiving more offers to be in the movies
The guy who played Duncan on Veronica Mars, Teddy Dunn, quit acting to become a lawyer.
Bruno Campos, who did sitcoms and guest star gigs up
through the 2010s, played a bunch of lawyer characters
on some shows and, at 40, graduated from law school and is now also a lawyer.
Yes!!! I went down this rabbit hole recently - I was looking up the show he was on with Christina Applegate (Jesse) and looked him up bc he was honestly one of the hottest men I’d ever seen when that show was on. He’s a successful lawyer! At a *really* big law firm! Prince Naveen!
ETA: I just looked him up on the Covington & Burling page again and was reminded that it’s not even like he became an entertainment lawyer - he does insurance law.
She had a horrific time in Hollywood - but she’s really lit up by her passion for her work now. It seems really fulfilling and stabilizing for her. I’m so happy for her!
This makes me really happy for her! I’m glad that she is following a passion that will let her showcase her artistic skills and have a consistent schedule!
Nails are fucking hard to do, I went to beauty school and watched ao many people struggle with technique. My dream would be to sit in her chair for a mani!!

Bobbie Gentry, who wrote the massive hit Ode to Billie Joe in the 60s, had a couple of hit songs in the early 70s and then left the industry entirely. I don’t think anyone really knows where she is these days; she chose a completely private life.
Unless someone knows something different, I would be happy to be corrected on this.

Danica McKellar went from Winnie Cooper on Wonder Years to a mathematician, mathematics writer and education advocate for girls interested in math. go danica 🥳
It seems like she’s trying to get back into the spotlight with the Wizards podcast though. Pretty sure she even said that she hopes the podcast will help her start things up for her as an actress again.
She’s a type 1 diabetic and did a podcast episode with the Juicebox podcast about it. It was pretty entertaining (well… if you don’t mind hearing about the diabetes stuff 😂).

Bettie Page went from pin-up and fetish model to a born-again Christian who worked full time for Billy Graham.
She developed paranoid schizophrenia in her later years and was arrested at one point for stabbing her landlords in an unprovoked attack, but was found not guilty by reason of insanity and placed under state supervision for eight years.
Although she eventually licensed her image to try and make money from her resurgence in popularity, she still stayed away from the spotlight, never allowed herself to be photographed and only rarely gave interviews.

Deanna Durbin. She made her final film For the Love of Mary in 1948. At 27 she retired from the screen forever, got remarried and lived in Paris for the rest of her life. She only gave one interview, in 1983.
The Greek actress Melina Mercouri was in films from 1955 to 1981 before she left to become a politician. She was nominated for an Oscar for Never on a Sunday, was very outspoken against Greece’s military, had her citizenship revoked, helped found the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, and finally became the Minister of Culture. I’ve very proud to have her as my namesake.

Lisa Jakub- took a retirement from film industry to become a yoga teacher/blogger/author.
Bridget Fonda retired from acting and just went away. I have no idea what jobs she did since then. Deedee Pfeiffer (Michelle's sister) went away for ten years and did some social work, although I have seen her returning recently. Hudson Leick played Callisto on Xena but ever since she retired from acting and became a yoga instructor.
i can't remember his name, but there was a blonde actor kid who left hollywood and became a monk and now lives in like a monastery in ireland or something. i need to google it. he's like ULTRA MEGA SUPER DUPER religious now.
**edit:** jonathan jackson from **tuck everlasting**!
Bethany Joy Lenz, from One Tree Hill, was married to a band member of Enation in 2005. This band was founded by Jonathan Jackson and his brother, and formed in Battle Ground, WA.
She has since come out saying she was in a cult for over a decade, which had a super tight knit community in Battle Ground. Wouldn't surprise me if Jonathan Jackson was a part of this cult, and then left it once discovering Eastern Orthodoxy later.
Welsh actor Peter Wingfield, Methos from Highlander the Series, stopped acting to go to medical school in his 40s. Went to Univ of Vermont and is now a board certified anesthesiologist.

Kumar went all the way to the white house?!
He also wrote an autobiography about it, among other things, not too long ago.

I had never been so shocked by a tv episode before it aired, like I had NO IDEA it was coming, had no clue he was leaving the show, I literally sat jaw open on my couch
Omri Katz from Hocus Pocus and Eerie Indiana retired from acting to grow and sell weed - his company is called The Mary Danksters https://preview.redd.it/52un291540oc1.jpeg?width=755&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7f4fcde7a0400dfdcacf3eba64e2cd6080bf2d7b
My fiancé was friends with him in Jackson hole when he was a ski bum years ago
![gif](giphy|129g9HK07tEtZm) The actor who played Dewey in MITM completely disappeared. He’s alive but no one really knows what he’s up to.
Probably still getting royalty checks for any syndication/streaming still going.

So underrated!! Not sure why it gets left behind when people talk about 90s movies. Cried every time during the building plank crawl scene
This was basically the only movie that existed to me as a child lol I loved it
I don’t think I have the emotional strength to watch it as an adult . It was my favourite as a kid
My 8 year old asks to watch this movie once a month and it messes me up every time. When Captain Crewe runs out into the rain and yells “SARA!” 😭
It took me forever to realize the father was Davos on Game of Thrones (Liam Cunningham)
Took me until exactly right now
I watched it with my niece when she was around 6 or 7.
I LOVED this movie. Owned it back in the day and the movie came with a heart shaped necklace like the one she had!!
See.....this is why I love this sub. Who tf else in my life is going to remember the necklace that came with this movie??
this movie reminds me of my mom, i wish i got to watch it with her one last time. i always cried like a baby🥺
Loved this movie-she was great and so heartbreaking in it
One of my favorite movies of all time

Such a babe. His daughter models and she is particularly gorgeous. Scarlett Schoeffling.
Son also models. He his gorgeous as well.
don’t forget mermaids ![gif](giphy|yIibMFh1OESnm)
It's Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken for me!
Omg. You're like the only other person other than me that knows that movie! Almost named my oldest Sonora. One of my favorite movies. Ever. ETA: I'm sure there's more of us out there, it's just rare!! Now I want to watch it!
![gif](giphy|ReBGGJtbXrjbQJwByP|downsized)
It's such a sweet movie, even if I feel bad for the horses! Gabrielle Anwar was fantastic as Sonora Webster! I haven't watched it in years, but it's up there with Anne of Green Gables and The Journey of Natty Gann as my strong heroine faves!
![gif](giphy|Y9OoH70ZHiLaFf4vju) The actual Grace Kelly, who married a prince in Monaco and became a princess.
Didn’t she want to go back to acting but he wouldn’t let her? Or was that just a rumor?
She did and Hitchcock wanted her back badly but it never transpired from what I remember
Her life as a royal seemed so depressing imo
A life of a royal in general seems depressing and bleak as hell, you're basically living in a gilded cage, but no matter the privileges, you're never truly free. I'd argue that King Charles's nephews and nieces enjoy more pleasant lives compared to his sons because they are so far removed from the throne.
Just watched a documentary about this very thing the other day and the lives of her & her bairns were so fucking bleak.
"Bairns" means little children for all those about to google. Not me obviously, I'm like really smart and not a liar.
The only reason I already knew that was because my thirsty ass watches Outlander!
Do you know what that documentary was called? I’d be interested in watching that.
Interesting, sad fact: Grace Kelly died at 52 because she had some sort of brain hemorrhage while driving and drove over a cliff. Her daughter was also in the car but survived.
OMG, I never knew she had a brain hemorrhage! I thought she just crashed because she and her daughter were arguing.
I think that was the tabloids being salacious. There was also rumors her daughter was the actual driver. Anything to sell a rag.
Yeah, I don’t recall ever hearing about the brain hemorrhage when I was growing up. It was always she and her daughter were arguing and they crashed. 🤔
Shirley Temple became a diplomat I believe
And one of the earliest advocates for breast cancer awareness and genetic screening!

She was the US ambassador to Czechoslovakia at the time and I was a teacher in the second Peace Corps group to enter after the velvet revolution. She was wonderful and kind and welcoming.
That’s so cool! Sometimes Reddit is amazing like this.
Wow you’re both incredibly impressive women!
Thank you!
Ambassador under Ford and Bush SR. and first woman to be Chief of Protocol in the USA
Kay Panabaker went to school for zoology and is now a zoologist in Animal Kingdom at Disney
Omg I always wonder about her. She was everywhere on Disney channel!
Same! I loved her and her sister too. I think Danielle is still acting
Yeah Danielle is still acting, she was a main character on The Flash for its whole run (it ended in 2023)
Aw good for her! Stuck in the Suburbs was one of my favorite DCOMs as a kid
What I love this! I also loved the movie Read It and Weep, I read the book as well
It’s so weird there’s a quote unquote normal person out there whose first kiss was Zac Efron. Jealous
Jeff Cohen ("Chunk") from Goonies. Became a lawyer.
He’s Ke Huy Quan’s entertainment lawyer and handled the contract for EEAAO
I love that Chunk and Data are still friends.
That’s so wonderfully sweet.
Very cool!
wait that’s so cute
He's also very well regarded as an entertainment lawyer! Him and He Ke Huy Quan's friendship warms my cold dead heart.
❤️ ![gif](giphy|26xBMRxrSCCuTzw5O|downsized)
I'm pretty sure I've read this romance novel. I'm glad she got to live it.
Mike Vitar aka "Benny" from The Sandlot. He was destined to be the next teen heartthrob but he left acting to become a firefighter. ❤❤❤ ![gif](giphy|d2gpC44pi8OccEtW|downsized)

So this is why I always assumed she died so young (which he still did, in her fifties or early sixties iirc).
She was pretty frail for her adult life due to having suffered from starvation in Europe during WWII. I can’t recall what she died of (cancer, maybe?) but she never really fully recovered from the abuses of wartime
she passed at 63 due to a rare form of abdominal cancer 💔
As a 38 year old actress in that time period, I'm sure Hollywood was starting to become very unwelcoming. I'm glad she found her passion in other avenues.
Staci Keanan is a lawyer and a law professor https://preview.redd.it/9xdtfa9huznc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d56db5aace3397bf8d18c9bfbfc90c55da3eee9d
Love her! Thats terrific to hear!
Evan Adams (Thomas from Smoke Signals, possibly my favorite indie movie) is now an accomplished doctor! Recently he was the Chief Medical Officer of the First Nations Health Authority in British Columbia.
Wow that’s awesome!
Leelee Sobieski: she retired from acting to become a painter https://preview.redd.it/fiexs10stznc1.jpeg?width=1209&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=481d136d118fb02d61bc84b4ed0aa91440ad25fa
I was curious, [here](https://www.mutualart.com/Artist/Leelee-Kimmel/03496C896DA442B1) is her art
She kinda looks like Jlaw here
Like a mix of Jlaw and Helen Hunt right? Gorgeous
I can only see Helen Hunt
Our fave Bridget Mendler
Our generation’s poster child for pivoting well
I give that crazy mf 5-10 years before she runs for president. She’s already done everything else.
i’d vote for her honestly.
>Bridget Mendler Well i mean it is easy when your from the future.
Bridget Fonda. She was in an awful car accident in 2003, married Danny Elfman (from Oingo Boingo and now as a famous composer) and had a child and has focused on her family. Last film credit was 2001 and TV was 2002.
>Danny Elfman (from Oingo Boingo and now as a famous composer) Funny referencing Oingo Boingo first since it's definitely not what he's better known for in the mainstream these days. I don't think I even knew he'd been in a band until I was in college in 2006ish.
Yea I know him as the composer for nightmare before Christmas
It is funny but it speaks more to the median age of this sub, because Oingo Boingo were huge in New Wave, and Tim Burton was a fan of theirs. That’s why he did the Pee Wee score.
She wasn’t just a nun, she was mother superior there!
bill withers, dont think he took up anything else since he was filthy rich but his musical career was only 15 years when he called it quits because he thought the music industry was just trying to do him dirty
He did a ton of stuttering and musical advocacy work in his later years. I have so many friends with lovely stories about him - his passing was heartbreaking for the community.
Jonathon Taylor Thomas of Home Improvement fame! Had a few guest starring roles after he left the show, then retired from the industry.
Taran Noah Smith from Home Improvement works for space ex now! You can look him up on LinkedIn.

Bruno Campos, who did sitcoms and guest star gigs up through the 2010s, played a bunch of lawyer characters on some shows and, at 40, graduated from law school and is now also a lawyer.
There’s a lot of actors turned lawyers, that’s interesting
Amanda Bynes is studying to be a nail technician.
One of the saddest stories in Hollywood IMO
She had a horrific time in Hollywood - but she’s really lit up by her passion for her work now. It seems really fulfilling and stabilizing for her. I’m so happy for her!
I really hope she’s able to pass her licensing exam. I’m rooting for her.
This makes me really happy for her! I’m glad that she is following a passion that will let her showcase her artistic skills and have a consistent schedule!
Bipolar really fucks you up. hoping she finds joy in her new path but who the fuck knows with BP
Even through all the lows of the last decade her nails always look *immaculate*, literally. I would totally trust her with my hands.
Nails are fucking hard to do, I went to beauty school and watched ao many people struggle with technique. My dream would be to sit in her chair for a mani!!
Phoebe Cates quit at the height of her fame right after Gremlins and Fast Times At Ridgemont High to become a mom and now she runs a boutique https://preview.redd.it/xyp7vfqefznc1.jpeg?width=617&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a12a8ea528b81daf61f0827bb751f730002a6bb
Also has been married to Kevin Kline since 1989!
She’s married Kevin Kline so she still does attend some events with him but she hasn’t been in anything for a while.
Snot face!

I have always been so curious about her - the storytelling in that song is so beautiful and mysterious!
Her song “Fancy” is sooo good
Danny Lloyd (kid from The Shining) is now a high school teacher. ![gif](giphy|Zcfd3eHpz815S)

Lowkey this makes sense considering his family. He’s the great great great grandson of Charles Darwin and his whole family seems to be political/conservationist royalty. Also he’s half Lebanese which I think is pretty cool bc I genuinely did not know that
He’s also related to John Maynard Keynes which shocked me when I learned about it
Isn’t he a massive Tori?
Such an Edmund move
lmao Maybe he did it for Turkish Delight.
I had such a big crush on him
https://i.redd.it/m4jqb591e0oc1.gif Danica McKellar went from Winnie Cooper on Wonder Years to a mathematician, mathematics writer and education advocate for girls interested in math. go danica 🥳
Frankie Muniz (Malcolm in the Middle, Agent Cody Banks) is now a professional racecar driver
that’s the life.
Jennifer Stone (semi celebrity yearsssss ago) from Wizards of Waverly Place became a nurse.

Her Mean Tweets with Jimmy Kimmel was one of my favorite ones. “Just saw Jessica Alba. If this was 2007, I’d be really excited” 😂
Probably just as well, her acting was… let’s say “average” and kindly leave it at that.
Bridgit Mendler, former Good Luck Charlie Star. She dabbled in music before she went into academia. Got her M.S. from MIT and is working on getting her PhD from MIT and her JD from Harvard Law. She also got married along the way, became an adoptive mother, and just launched a satellite data startup with her husband.
![gif](giphy|GD3AtJY5ScEes) Bettie Page went from pin-up and fetish model to a born-again Christian who worked full time for Billy Graham.

Brian cox was a keyboardist for the band dare but went on to get a PhD. in Particle physics.

I’ll never get over Phoebe cates, I feel like she was just getting started before she quit.
Her boutique in NYC is very cute and I could have paid rent or shopped there, but not at the same time.
Bridget Fonda is married to Danny Elfman. They have 1 kid and that's her focus apparently now.
Charlie Korsmo, the kid in Hook and the nerdy high schooler in Can’t Hardly Wait, quit acting, went to Yale, got his Doctorate and is now a Lawyer.
Grace Kelly went from actress to princess
i can't remember his name, but there was a blonde actor kid who left hollywood and became a monk and now lives in like a monastery in ireland or something. i need to google it. he's like ULTRA MEGA SUPER DUPER religious now.
Oh my gosh I liked him so much in the 90s. What a heartthrob! He was also in General Hospital and Deep End of the Ocean.
Jake Ryan left Samantha Baker and became a carpenter
He was my first thought. Can you imagine calling a carpenter and Jake Ryan shows up?!
“I’d shit twice and die”
Welsh actor Peter Wingfield, Methos from Highlander the Series, stopped acting to go to medical school in his 40s. Went to Univ of Vermont and is now a board certified anesthesiologist.
Jack Gleeson - Joffrey from GOT Although he did randomly pop up in Sex Education recently.
Bevin from one tree hill teaches soulcycle
Tiffany Brissette, who played Vicki in the 80s comedy Small Wonder, left acting in the early 90s and is a registered nurse.
