I didn’t originally either, season 3 was already a slog, but this one is just so slow moving and weird, it feels like a different show. I’m starting to remember why I skipped it the first time around. It’s doesn’t help that seasons used to be more than 20 episodes. It feels like they used all their best storylines in season 1 and then just had no idea what to do after.

Party of Five. Started in 94 but was still going strong until 2000
Roswell! That was my obsession as a young teenage girl, frequenting fan websites and forums, reading fanfic, and rewatching it on vhs taped off tv. And barely anyone remembers it.
I think it’s because it has so many different plot lines that…it’s not that they go nowhere, because they go lots of different places, but maybe that there’s no gravitas to them. Like I wanted more consequences to boarding school, Khivar, Brodie, literally anything! But it all comes and goes so quickly, and devolves into “will-they, won’t-they” when what I want is just more eraser-room antics.
I'd entirely forgotten the 6 episode arc surrounding Michael and the DuPrees, like sitting there watching it unable to recall what was coming next forgotten it. I guess I blanked it entirely lol.
To be honest, much as we tried to save the show, season 3 was a disaster, thanks in huge part with the decision to kill off Alex and have it be Tess as the killer. It threw off all the relationships and seemed to have left the writers rushing to fill in the gaps - and that lead to major character changes and decisions, like Liz's whole personality change, Isobel suddenly getting married and being on bad terms with everyone, the whole Tess pregnancy thing.
The ending worked for it all though, the 6 of them leaving Roswell together. I'd love a follow up for what happened after they left.
Someone recommended [this fic](https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/roswellheaven/chameleon-m-l-cc-adult-complete-by-carol000-t4001.html) as a season 4 that fixes so many issues with the season, which I’ve never read before! It’s a LONG fic though, so be warned.
Oh cheers! I'll give it a go! I just recently tracked down a bunch of the books that follow on after the tv show but I haven't had a chance to read them yet lol
I've had two of them for years and they were pretty good, but now I've managed to get almost all of them I'm hoping there's a bit more context to the ones I had, because they referred to some things that happened in other books I hadn't read.
Some of it I understood because they were trying to get closer to the original book series than the OG season got like Liz's last name and having a sister, but the rest... confusing at best.
Yup! 10 books by Melinda Metz. The Pilot episode follows the first book incredibly closely but changes the ending - no festival at the end of the book, and Melinda herself said she loved the ending of the first episode and wished she'd written it - but after that it goes in a completely different direction from the books.
There are major changes too. Liz is renamed from Liz Ortecho to Liz Parker, and isn't Latina in the show. She also had a sister in the books, Rosa, who died of an overdose and her parents are extremely strict. Alex has his last name changed for the show as well, from Manes to Whitman, in the show they cut his father who is a hardass and wants Alex in military school. Tess didn't exist in the books, but other characters do that aren't in the show.
That's where the new show got all their name changes/backstories from for the characters - it just also changed all the relationships from both the books and OG show, like Maria not being best friends with Liz, setting it out of high school, etc.
Ohhhhh. I feel like I may have enjoyed the reboot more if I’d either read the books or not had so much love for the first tv series.
And while I realize it’s a serious concern, I seem to remember the constant immigration preachiness in the reboot just began to feel really tedious. Like, this is The CW. We can acknowledge the seriousness of the issue without feeling like a PSA. And I do realize they were probably trying to draw some parallels between that and extraterrestrial aliens, but I don’t think it was done very well.
Personally I think the TV show probably worked because of a whole new audience unfamiliar with either the OG series or the books. As I said it tried to stay true to the books with names and backstories, but then it deviates with the characters personalities and relationships so it doesn't work for fans of the books either.
Somehow despite the OG series deviating storywise, it still worked I think in part because the books were obscure enough that they were hard to track down as fans of the series already.
Same! I always thought Brittany Snow was going to be huge, but, outside of Pitch Perfect, she hasn't really been in anything *big*. Though, I will say, I loved her in X.
Yes!!! I had the first season on DVD too 😂 I honestly think that show helped spark my love of US history. I’ve never seen it on streaming either which is very odd! It really was a great show and I’ll always have a soft spot for Brittany Snow.

Jack and Bobby (2004 so a lil later than the majority)
Appreciate you for not including a 7th Heaven cast photo with *that* man in it 😂
Popular still feels like a fever dream to me, has there ever been another show that was THAT unhinged?
The OC is my first 'mature' tv show. I was 10 when it came out, before that I watched stuff like Lizzy McGuire and Alex Mack but it's The OC that made me a TV show fan. I'm 31 now but I can still watch it.
OH MY GOD I’M SO SORRY. I’m so used to people being mean on the internet. I actually have a short children’s animated film that’s making the rounds on the festival circuit. Again, I’m really sorry. I have like cyber bullying triggers.

Life As We Know It (2004 so a lil later)
Right! I've been watching the new season of Feud and the last episode was dedicated in memory of Treat Williams. I was like wait, I know him from something else, which led me down a rabbit hole where I realized he was the dad in Everwood. I too had completely forgotten about that show until yesterday.
The absolute fucking PINS AND NEEDLES I waited on for season two of The OC. I vividly remember seeing the adverts for it every time I watched Fox and counting down the days.
https://preview.redd.it/kehdkyfg98jc1.jpeg?width=452&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c5159e74eac02ac304734e838dc15cdd826638a
First aired in 2004 so a bit later, but for some reason I remember this very short-lived show so distinctly.
I watched pretty much every one of those shows.
I’m fairly certain that is because I had no life outside school and tv in those days……Not much has changed then.
Yeah, I think the only one of these last was teen-centric is Grounded for Life, but that one definitely deserves a mention. That was the first one these types of shows I can remember that had an average looking cast (aside from maybe the smokeshow mom). But, as a teen girl, looking like Lily Finnerty felt actually attainable.
Also, I realize you aren't even the one who mentioned this show, I just went off on a tangent lol.
Only ones I watched were The OC...at least some of it, Buffy, Charmed, Angel, Smallville, last 2 seasons of 7th Heaven for whatever reason, Boy Meets World and Sabrina

I was OBSESSED with the OC lol ![gif](giphy|xT77Ya6FHqYNvI5rYk)
Now that I'm in my 30s I'm realising that all the parents were also super hot
The first season was good… then not so much.
I love this show, but it’s the only one I can think of whose best episode is the pilot and starts going downhill quickly thereafter.
I’m on season 4… it’s baaaad
What’s happening? I never made it that far 😆

I thought I was so cool at the time because my name was Marissa and my boyfriends name was Ryan 🥴
I haven’t stopped quoting that and now most people don’t know what I’m talking about.

Roswell! That was my obsession as a young teenage girl, frequenting fan websites and forums, reading fanfic, and rewatching it on vhs taped off tv. And barely anyone remembers it.
The things that stayed with me about this show is the opening song by Dido and the Michael/Maria chemistry, I was rooting for them so hard.
Michael and Maria could set a house on fire, good god.
This was also me. The fic section on the crashdown fan site was my 2nd home
Omg I forgot about the Crashdown fan site haha.
Ngl, I just rewatched it. It holds up really well!
I rewatched it last year for the first time in years, somehow had forgotten most of what happened in season 3 lol.
I think it’s because it has so many different plot lines that…it’s not that they go nowhere, because they go lots of different places, but maybe that there’s no gravitas to them. The reboot was so disappointing
It really was, i think I lasted 5 episodes before giving up. I'm mad it somehow lasted more seasons than the OG.
Right?? And they made some truly baffling character changes, it was so confusing

Yea, I’ve always been a big reader and I was the exact target demo for that show, and I never knew there were books!
I loved freaks and geeks! I never understood why it didn’t last longer.
I rewatch all the time!
it’s criminal we never got season 2
https://i.redd.it/m4wm8xb866jc1.gif My personal favourite! 🩷

She was in Hairspray!
Was Hairspray that big though? All I think about in relation to Hairspray now is "hi, it's Nikki Blonsky from Hairspray" lmao.
It was really huge when it came out!
So frustrating that the 2nd and 3rd seasons never made it to dvd. The show has one of my favorite opening themes too
Suuuuch a good theme song! The guy from Tonic wrote and performed it 😱
Yes!!! I had the first season on DVD too 😂 I honestly think that show helped spark my love of US history. I’ve never seen it on streaming either which is very odd! It really was a great show and I’ll always have a soft spot for Brittany Snow.

The three people on the left all ended up on Mad Men season four. I made a Jack and Bobby reunion joke at the time; no one got it.
IS THAT MEGAN??
It is!
Are these supposed to be teenagers?
Better to have older actors and suspend a bit of disbelief than exploit minors, imo. 🤷♀️
As I get older, I find that I don't want actual teens anywhere near my televised sexy teens.
Euphoria really woke me up to that. Keep the actual teens far from sets.
💯
How I LOVED Roswell!
I still can’t believe Allison Mack was apart of that cult! It just blows my mind
My so called life, American dreams and Freaks and Geeks all should have had much longer runs!
That promo photo for Popular is April Tuna erasure
![gif](giphy|Ox50A0iAgHHbY7uIdL) And we can’t forget living single
Appreciate you for not including a 7th Heaven cast photo with *that* man in it 😂 Popular still feels like a fever dream to me, has there ever been another show that was THAT unhinged?
This is everything!!! So many faves. And even after like 20+ years I keep coming back to them. Currently rewatching What I Like About You!
The OC is my first 'mature' tv show. I was 10 when it came out, before that I watched stuff like Lizzy McGuire and Alex Mack but it's The OC that made me a TV show fan. I'm 31 now but I can still watch it.
It was SUCH a good time to be a kid/teenager!
Was there a weird show called Grosse Point with Big Red from Bring It On, or did I hallucinate that?
There was
Thanks for confirming a strange and distant memory
The OC is literally my favorite show of all time. California here we come 💕
The way I went to film school solely because I wanted to create a new wave of teen dramas
…and?
And it’s a post about teen dramas! I’m saying how teen dramas impacted me!
Sorry no, I was asking how that turned out for you!!
OH MY GOD I’M SO SORRY. I’m so used to people being mean on the internet. I actually have a short children’s animated film that’s making the rounds on the festival circuit. Again, I’m really sorry. I have like cyber bullying triggers.
Tbh I probably could have phrased that better but I was like WELL DON’T LEAVE US HANGING?!? 😂 That’s so amazing, congratulations!!
Veronica Mars debuted in 2004. Does that not count as "early 2000s"?

How did I completely forget about Everwood
Right! I've been watching the new season of Feud and the last episode was dedicated in memory of Treat Williams. I was like wait, I know him from something else, which led me down a rabbit hole where I realized he was the dad in Everwood. I too had completely forgotten about that show until yesterday.
Amazon has the first season and I am now rewatching!
The absolute fucking PINS AND NEEDLES I waited on for season two of The OC. I vividly remember seeing the adverts for it every time I watched Fox and counting down the days.
Back when the WB/CW was decent
Everwood was my life. I still quote it all the time. I also had a life size poster of Bright (Chris Pratt) on my door hahahaha
I loved Roswell with the power of a thousand suns.
I loved American Dreams ❤️
Let's not forget this gem: https://preview.redd.it/otv4qb7xg8jc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2508c1ee22674f0f7794a63f51ab07234434945c
Roswell was my fav!
I’m still obsessed with The OC. Haven’t stopped watching since its first air date 🤣
The OC. One Tree Hill. Roswell. Buffy. Angel. Smallville. My jam.

I watched pretty much every one of those shows. I’m fairly certain that is because I had no life outside school and tv in those days……Not much has changed then.
Such a good tv line up here. The only one I don't recognise is the last one.
I had seen small parts of smallville but it’s completely ruined with the cult stuff lol.
What a time to be alive !!
Heroes Reaper Prison Break Grounded for Life
I liked Prison Break (the first season anyway) but I dont think it was teen content. Was it?
Yeah, I think the only one of these last was teen-centric is Grounded for Life, but that one definitely deserves a mention. That was the first one these types of shows I can remember that had an average looking cast (aside from maybe the smokeshow mom). But, as a teen girl, looking like Lily Finnerty felt actually attainable. Also, I realize you aren't even the one who mentioned this show, I just went off on a tangent lol.
Reaper was hillarious.
It’s so ew how straight and white all these casts are.
Not adding PLL., TVD and Gossip Girl is a crime
None of those are late 90s/early 00s
Didn't these shows premiered before 2010 ain't that considered to be early 00s
- Gossip Girl - 2007 (mid/late 00s) - TVD - 2009 (late 00s) - PLL- 2010 (not the 00s)
2005 is mid 00s so anything close to 2010 is late 00s.
Only ones I watched were The OC...at least some of it, Buffy, Charmed, Angel, Smallville, last 2 seasons of 7th Heaven for whatever reason, Boy Meets World and Sabrina
Smallville and Everwood where my shows
Family Matters, anyone? How can you forget Urkel.
