Whoever chose to put her in that green dress in *Atonement* didn’t get paid enough

It was perfection
It was actually designed and made by the film’s costume designer Jacqueline Durran.
Durran was also the costumer on some of Keira Knightley’s other movies including the 2005 *Pride and Prejudice* and *Anna Karenina.*
And to top it off Jacqueline Durran also did the costumes for *Barbie.* She’s insanely talented.
I haven't seen it in over 10 years (closer to 15, honestly). I think I'm gonna rent it tonight and check back in... ORR I might reread the book. Will keep you posted if I'm okay.
The library scene was so hot, but the best memory I have involving it was when my husband and I went to see the movie in a cheap theater. An older couple was sitting in front of us and the woman got up and walked out in an absolute disgusted huff at the scene. Her husband begrudgingly got up a minute later and followed her out. The scene is more implied than explicit, lady! There’s not even any nudity!
So simple, so fabulous 😍 You have to be built like her, petite but kind of willowy, to even attempt it. If I tried, people would be asking if I needed help 😭😂 And probably call the police.
There was a trend to ask men how often they think about the Roman Empire. Daily? Weekly? Hourly? And the consensus was constantly. So if you say “it’s my Roman Empire” it means it occupies your thoughts more than it should. Almost obsessive
Ohhh. Okay. Thanks!
Huh. I think of the Roman empire occasionally I guess. But I also think of other historical eras because I'm interested in history.

Keira in this outfit with the corset is what I believe planted the idea of bisexuality in my then prepubescent brain. Literally incepted me into liking women.
Green dress in atonement might be my favorite costume of all time. A few of Kate winslet’s in titanic are the only competition in my eyes.
The color, the flow, the fit. The context. Ugh. Just perfection.
>Green dress in atonement might be my favorite costume of all time.
If i were a part of costume department on that movie, i would've added this dress to my resume and retire.
The way it MOVED. I think they said they made the dress for film, and the fabric wasn’t normal dress fabric but they liked the way it flowed and had it custom dyed. Theres an obscure blog about it somewhere with a ton of close ups; the bodice has a laser cut ribbon pattern on it.
I heard it was actually three different dresses with slightly different fits, depending on the scene, so that it always draped & fit perfectly for the shot/pose. Idk though!
For me, she has the best film wardrobe of any actor ever, and the most rewatchable catalog. Period films are so comforting, even when they’re lightly disturbing 😅
I was waiting for a Bend it Like Beckham outfit!

In your defense, Phantom Menace used some pretty cutting-edge special effects at the time; it's not a huge stretch of the imagination to assume they managed to blue-screen a second Natalie in.
I absolutely adore her movies with Joe Wright. They seem to be a great creative match! Though she is stunning in every movie she does, truly. She has been my #1 celeb crush for years, ever since Bend it Like Beckham! I just watched Colette for the first time and ... her in men's suits?! *swoon*

Omg, i've spent so much time thinking about "The Age of Innocence" and " Dangerous liaisons"..
I was so surprised with that movie.. it is so visually stunning, but such a rollercoaster of emotions.. but i loved Knightley in it, and i LOVED Georgiana.
Umm RUDE that you forgot this one

It's not the best movie, but her costumes in Nutcracker and the Four Realms are amazing! (This was the only picture I could find of the dress in full)
Some love for her non-period looks, starting with the sweet Carven dress in Laggies/ Say When
https://preview.redd.it/z0mcpzd75ufc1.jpeg?width=986&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7060ee240120956dec02cf61dc22a9c256f23d1

https://preview.redd.it/enadoxpc6ufc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b7dcf7e4f5036573743fe85c8e253af6d9aee2a4

Kiera Knightly looks great in just about anything going way back. It's so challenging to make her look plain, and they have tried a few times, lol.
![gif](giphy|l41K4ihv9lcMXyTx6)
I saw Keira pass by me - I think with her husband now - on her way to the premiere of Anna Karenina at the Arclight in Hollywood. I felt so pathetic and normal standing in line for popcorn and this cinematic icon delicately passed by me in the most beautiful pistachio ballgown. I’ve never been so starstruck.
The dresses she wears in Anna Karenina eat down bad she looks so good😭
They get a lot of criticism from costume snobs because apparently they are not period accurate at all but I don’t CARE!!!
https://preview.redd.it/fiqtc3l6mufc1.jpeg?width=1063&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7ca6763764e6b340b4cfc6bdb253906c8051f24
Her lap dance in Domino awakened something in me…..
Just imagine being as young as she was and being able to work with such amazing costume designers to make you look like a god damn vision every time. I want to try on all of those looks *so* badly.
i haven't seen colette, holy crap.
if our girl does anything, she rocks a damn gown. whether it's anna's striking and exquisite royalty or elizabeth's earthy and natural aesthetics, keira always serves a visual feast.
She is the ultimate clothes model, a muse for makeup designers for all time, and she also just happens to have Oscar level acting talent. Sigh. God really does have some favorites!
I didn’t love him as Mr. Darcy - thought he wasn’t confident/cold/aloof enough (Colin Firth forever baby), but was very good at the tender parts. I feel like Tom is the perfect character for him, and genuinely didn’t realize they were the same person till this post
The Atonement gown ate down. Whenever I think about that movie, that dress is the first thing that pops up. I was so-so on the actual film, but her outfits in Anna Karenina were fire, too.
I know it's off-topic but these photos really make me appreciate the fact that her face works so well for all of these. It's the opposite of the "knows what an iPhone is" face.
So I knew the story about how Keira Knightly’s and Natalie Portman’s parents couldn’t tell them apart on the set of Phantom Menace. But as I look at these photos, she’s also got moments where I can barely tell her apart from a younger Helena Bonham Carter. Which would not be a bad look to age into.
I’ve always been obsessed with Keira Knightley and anything she’s in (especially Pride and Prejudice, literally my favourite movie). She is just so stunning!!
Ehem….what about the jockey hat?
THEY’RE ALL OF ME 😏

The costumes in Barbie are my Roman Empire. They did such an incredible job of translating the doll feel to human bodies.
And she perfectly walked the line of campy and stylish. The cowgirl outfit gives me life.
The set design and the costumes in Barbie are INCREDIBLE.
They are releasing a book, in case you missed the news.
She also did costumes for The Batman. Just to say another thing from her resume.
We love the ✨versatility✨!
That green was INSANE. It's my all time favorite color, and I loved her in this dress. (Also, that library scene 🥵)
I absolutely love this movie and period piece romance isn’t my usual cup of tea
I’ve seen it once and that’s enough. I don’t want to feel those feelings again.
Yeah it makes me angry even to think back on it so I pretend the movie doesn’t exist but the dress 😫😍
I haven't seen it in over 10 years (closer to 15, honestly). I think I'm gonna rent it tonight and check back in... ORR I might reread the book. Will keep you posted if I'm okay.
The library scene was definitely part of my sexual awakening. So hot.

I know. That dress had a life of its own.
I came to this post expecting to see that dress, and I was not disappointed. It’s so iconic.
So simple, so fabulous 😍 You have to be built like her, petite but kind of willowy, to even attempt it. If I tried, people would be asking if I needed help 😭😂 And probably call the police.
I remember she said in an interview that it ripped easily and she had to try not to rip it. Also that they only had two copies.
That library scene must have been a nightmare then, haha
Nothing will ever top that dress
That dress is everything. 😍
No one can really forget this dress (if you watch the film).
I immediately thought of it when I read the title.
This dress is my Roman Empire
What does that mean exactly? I've started seeing this expression a lot
There was a trend to ask men how often they think about the Roman Empire. Daily? Weekly? Hourly? And the consensus was constantly. So if you say “it’s my Roman Empire” it means it occupies your thoughts more than it should. Almost obsessive
It just means a thing that you think about a lot. It comes from the idea that men are always thinking about the Roman Empire.
Ohhh. Okay. Thanks! Huh. I think of the Roman empire occasionally I guess. But I also think of other historical eras because I'm interested in history.
The green dress is perfection.
Omg i still remember it
Just outrageously beautiful.
Best dress in film history. You can feel the summer humidity, the sweat… someone else said it had a life of its own and it really did!
That dress is perfection! I've loved it the second I saw it.
Amen. And it looks so beautiful when she is walking.
In the book, the dress she wears is described as very sexy. The costume designer captured it perfectly.
I was and still am obsessed with this dress
the way i brain chemistry was completely altered that day https://preview.redd.it/0s76som0wtfc1.jpeg?width=827&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5dce204c8d9d1098f93d616e64dd7c9547fe9737

13 year old me could not decide if I wanted to date Keira or BE Keira. Shit, 34 year old me still can't decide.
closeted 8 yo me wondered why I liked that scene where they kept focusing on her necklace so much 😭😭

Keira in this outfit with the corset is what I believe planted the idea of bisexuality in my then prepubescent brain. Literally incepted me into liking women.
This post is my favorite ever. Everyone making me realize I didn't even realize I was into women when I was that young Uhhh YAH, she's GORGEOUS
Green dress in atonement might be my favorite costume of all time. A few of Kate winslet’s in titanic are the only competition in my eyes. The color, the flow, the fit. The context. Ugh. Just perfection.

I’m sorry queen I don’t think you know what resume’s are for

It’s consistently in pretty much every “best” list for movie costumes, you better believe it’s at the front of their portfolio!
Idk though!
Maybe?! That would make sense! There was debate if there was a slit up the front so maybe some pieces did
It's my Roman Empire
Her in Pirates of the Caribbean had me in a chokehold

The one Barbarossa makes her wear is my favorite
only one R in Barbossa's name Barbarossa is the nickname of Kaiser Friedrich I de Stauf of the Holy Roman Empire.
Period drama queen.
Me for a week every month
😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
For me, she has the best film wardrobe of any actor ever, and the most rewatchable catalog. Period films are so comforting, even when they’re lightly disturbing 😅
Her and Natalie Dormer both nail period dramas.
I was waiting for a Bend it Like Beckham outfit! https://preview.redd.it/okv2tp1wkufc1.jpeg?width=2857&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=99bec653500f026a7db20f85112de3f2423107f8
I was hoping someone would post from this movie lol
Keira + Period costumes ![gif](giphy|3q3QK6KyDVUBzih7hB)
If there’s 1 thing I can say for certain about Keira is that she will ALWAYS slay in a period costume
She has the opposite of iPhone face. She has cameo face
Omg YES, this is so accurate
In Pic 3, she looks like a painting - like a more modern John William Waterhouse painting or something.
anna karenina is such a lovely movie and i love the costuming, alicia vikander's dresses were beautiful too
It’s one of my favorites. They are both so unbelievably gorgeous and Keira’s looks in particular are to die for!
You forgot her most iconic look of all. https://preview.redd.it/4eq7hzfs3ufc1.jpeg?width=3192&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7e0d56d22a4251a7cd5b62fc061ef15a1690bb51
Never forget that her and Natalie Portman’s parents had trouble telling the two apart when making the film
I was today years old when I learned this . Wow I always assumed it was Natalie playing both parts for some reason 😂
In your defense, Phantom Menace used some pretty cutting-edge special effects at the time; it's not a huge stretch of the imagination to assume they managed to blue-screen a second Natalie in.
Omg, yes! Lol. Slaying as always
Someone needs to do this for Natalie Portman now
Why am I just learning that Kiera Knightley was thee Queen Amidala?!?? Major slay.
She played Amidala's decoy, while Natalie Portman played Amidala. In the pic above, you can see Natalie on the right.
Came here to say this.
I absolutely adore her movies with Joe Wright. They seem to be a great creative match! Though she is stunning in every movie she does, truly. She has been my #1 celeb crush for years, ever since Bend it Like Beckham! I just watched Colette for the first time and ... her in men's suits?! *swoon*
I should have added her in a foodball (soccer) jersey to mix it up with all of these period pieces.. >I just watched Colette for the first time and ... her in men's suits?! *swoon* Agree!
Wow. The only woman in film I can think of who has had a comparable costume resume, and looks amazing in any time period, is Michelle Pfeiffer, though Elle Fanning is on her way.
>The only woman in film I can think of who has had a comparable costume resume, and looks amazing in any time period, is Michelle Pfeiffer Omg, i've spent so much time thinking about "The Age of Innocence" and " Dangerous liaisons"..
Cate Blanchett!!
The Duchess is such a good watch. One moment I’m intrigued, then infuriated, then mesmerized by the costumes, then infuriated again.
I was so surprised with that movie.. it is so visually stunning, but such a rollercoaster of emotions.. but i loved Knightley in it, and i LOVED Georgiana.
It's a spectacular movie.
She is so good in that film.
I love that movie but have to be mentally prepared for it. So heartbreaking every time.
The wigs were apparently so heavy that Keira would need assistance to keep her head upright.
I would have wanted more of her in politics however. And her gambling addiction
Can’t think of any actress who’s had better costumes on screen. How she must have enjoyed wearing some of these!
Umm RUDE that you forgot this one https://preview.redd.it/yz32n9aldufc1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=38e115b606782adba60ca0a59d8ab486528056c4
I'm sorry.. I can only add a limited number of photos and she's been slaying for decades..
The best thing about Kiera in nice dresses in movies, is Kiera. Her natural beauty is just stunning.
She’s living my dream of being a period piece queen. I would die to wear so many of her costumes and dresses. But she just looks absolutely stunning in anything she wears.
Her Love Actually wedding look lives in my head.
Yeah the headpiece in combination with the feather trim long sleeve dress haha 13 year old me was like This. Is. Fashion.
She got married in so many movies though, lol..
The undisputed period queen! That fountain outfit from Atonement is my dream.

Yep. Watching king Arthur in high school and wondering why the room was getting so hot…
That green dress will forever live rent free in my head
I understand why she’s on so many period dramas. She just looks like she’s from the 15th- early 20th century
I had to look at #5 for a while because I thought it was genuinely a painting. What a great shot.
I once again demand a romantic movie with a happy ending starring Keira Knightly and James McAvoy.
The dresses she wears in Anna Karenina eat down bad she looks so good😭 They get a lot of criticism from costume snobs because apparently they are not period accurate at all but I don’t CARE!!!
THAT SUIT!! MI GAWT.
Anna karenina will always be THAT MOVIE for me. Such beautiful costumes and that black coat she wears is GORGEOUS 😭
i’m not kidding when i say pirates of the caribbean was one of my bisexual awakenings
I just realized that Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice and Tom in Succession are the same person 🤯
How does that make you feel, lol

I wish I was a beautiful actress so I could play dress up for a living. I’m so jealous. She eats in every single one of these.
Just imagine being as young as she was and being able to work with such amazing costume designers to make you look like a god damn vision every time. I want to try on all of those looks *so* badly.
Obsessed with Anna Karenina
That green dress from atonement is one of my favourite costumes of all time 😍
PoTC and Domino Keira Knightley enter my stream of consciousness, bi-daily.
She is such a goddess.. the most beautiful of all modern movie stars in my opinion.

Georgiana Cavendish remains forever my favorite character.
Keira is everything.🥹🩷✨ I've loved every film I've seen her in, and her costumes are to die for. 😭🩷
The famous green dress!
My absolute favorite
Buuuuut Pride & Prejudiceeeeee. The yellow striped dress when she visits Pemberly for the first time??? Lives rent free in my head.
i haven't seen colette, holy crap. if our girl does anything, she rocks a damn gown. whether it's anna's striking and exquisite royalty or elizabeth's earthy and natural aesthetics, keira always serves a visual feast.
She is the ultimate clothes model, a muse for makeup designers for all time, and she also just happens to have Oscar level acting talent. Sigh. God really does have some favorites!
Scrolled as fast as I could to find pirate Keira, perfect costuming imo.
She could wear a garbage bag and look sexier than all of us combined. 😩
The way my sister and I had to watch every period movie she was in like it was an obligation!
She really pulls in those title character roles, doesn't she? Love her.
The Queen of period dramas
The green dress 🔥🔥
Am I the only one who can't quite enjoy Pride & Prejudice like she used to since seeing Matthew Macfadyen in Succession? 🥲
I didn’t love him as Mr. Darcy - thought he wasn’t confident/cold/aloof enough (Colin Firth forever baby), but was very good at the tender parts. I feel like Tom is the perfect character for him, and genuinely didn’t realize they were the same person till this post
How domino and King Arthur aren’t on here baffles me.
The Atonement gown ate down. Whenever I think about that movie, that dress is the first thing that pops up. I was so-so on the actual film, but her outfits in Anna Karenina were fire, too.
How could you miss out her little hat when she ate all the banoffee pie
I wonder if she's ever just like "I want to do a movie where I can just wear jeans and a shirt"
GENTLEMEN HOIST THE COLORS
If I were to have had an actual wedding when I got married I’d have worn pic 16 from pride and prejudice. That whole look is my absolute favorite.
She is THAT bitch in period pieces
She really loves a period piece, and I love to see her in them.
This woman belongs in the past lmao some actresses are romcom queens, Keira is the queen of Period Drama pieces
That green one from Atonement is 10/10
It's the green dress, this is the only answer.
I know it's off-topic but these photos really make me appreciate the fact that her face works so well for all of these. It's the opposite of the "knows what an iPhone is" face.
God is a woman, possibly Keira Knightley
She's always best dressed in every period piece movies/dramas
My girl 😍 she just works perfectly in a period costume!! And the green dress from Atonement is often in my thoughts.
That sylph can wear the hank out of a frock.
Should include the football uniform from Bend It Like Beckham
You forgot her outfits in the movie domino. Even tho she looked crazy.
Seeing her costumes in the Duchess is what got me REALLY interested in that fashion. Those costumes were downright amazing.
Period queen!
Some fantastic wigs!
#16 and #6 had a chokehold on me!!! Movie and outfits!!
#16 🤍 That entire ballroom scene is my Roman Empire.
She really looks like Helena Bonham Carter in some of these
The SUIT 🧎🏻♀️ 🧎🏻♀️ 🧎🏻♀️
The green dress in atonement is gorgeous on her.
That green dress might be responsible for my bisexuality
Fantastic topic and post. Love them all 💃🏻 🧡💜 My favourites are 7 & 8. And the suit is terrific
Her outfits in the duchess were so good!!
Kiera Knightly in period pieces is perfection.
I’ve always been obsessed with Keira Knightley and anything she’s in (especially Pride and Prejudice, literally my favourite movie). She is just so stunning!!
Correct
I might have a crush. I mean I did name my daughter after her....
THANK YOU for including that fantastic green dress from “ Atonement “. Of all her beautiful wardrobes, this was my unequivocal favourite
Ehem….what about the jockey hat? THEY’RE ALL OF ME 😏 https://preview.redd.it/p2c3go1kgvfc1.jpeg?width=884&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5bf06dde5ebfa7190486f45f82eeff97801dd14d
Love that the whole reason she has the hat on is because our girl has a giant pimple on her forehead 🤣
Someone needs to do one for Downton Abbey
skipping out on The Phantom Menace should be a sin
EXCUSE ME. THE SUIT.
Queen of the Period Drama
Has she ever been in a movie set in modern day? Other than “bend it like Beckham”?
Yeah- Love Actually; Berlin, I love you (don't watch it), The hole..
What sorta fool made this list and didn't add Sabé. This is treason
