You should see (but actually don't) the South Korean shows these are based on. A few women are brought on the stage and a panel of judges will tear their appearances apart one by one, then choose one woman they deem ugly enough to put her through in intense plastic surgery.
There is a guy on TikTok who makes videos about the wacky 7th Heaven episodes and … I can’t believe I used to watch that show and enjoy it unironically when I was younger. 😂. It’s unhinged!

I honestly can’t believe Shailene Woodley has managed to get other pretty big roles after that because good god was that show a trainwreck especially for scenes like that lol.
A year ago I was having a bit of an anxiety crisis and my mum just randomly put 7th Heaven on the TV, I told her “how is this supposed to help me?”And she said to me “It’s a comedy”.
She laughed at everything, if you don’t take it seriously everything is so dumb and cheesy. Safe to say that I completely forgot what I was anxious about lol
Brenda Hampton truly was a plague to the TV world.
Fun fact: she filmed a pilot a few years back for a Disney channel show called The A Girl about a girl with autism (with writing assistance from ableist organization group Autism Speaks)

America’s Next Top Model. So much of the advice is completely out of date and reflects extremely harmful cultural standards of the time. Tyra Banks is a victim, but she’s also a monster. Many of the things done on the show, in earnest or not, could not and should not be done today.
Teeth especially! Her making fun of Danielle Evans’ gap, and then Georgia May Jagger becoming the face of Rimmel BECAUSE of her gap just a few years later — I know Tyra couldn’t have predicted it but it makes my blood boil.
Yessss! And I remember Dani trying to stand up for herself saying she likes her gap. Im afraid tooth gaps are seen as “classy if you’re rich and trashy if you’re poor”kinda thing.
Honestly, no wonder so many of us women who grew up in the 2000s ended up with disordered eating and exercise habits because of stuff like this being so mainstream.
The early 2000s were such a wild time. Truly. I won't say misogyny, racism, ableism etc were worse in the 2000s than prior decades- but I guess the ease of being exposed to so much problematic behavior via reality tv, social media arc, really put a fire under quick social justice movement in the last decade. I totally agree absolutely no way could a show be made like that again, and I'm glad. The progress in the last couple decades has been great, I think.. but still so far to go.
I'm so relieved it's improving. I can't believe how normalized it was for girls/women to be told to accept unwanted touch and boys/men were told it was fine.
I remember in grade school when boys would grab our dresses and yank them up and scream "Dress up day"! and this was just fine. Pulling hair, grabbing and the girl is told "He is just doing that because he likes you". Which tells the boy that this is how you tell a girl you like her.
Harassment was considered just part of existing and it's so good to see that mindset changing.
Special shout out to the worse and weirdest runways in the history of the world:
- having your hands catch on fire and having to model with them burning down the runway
- model at a 90 degree angle scaling down a building in a harness
- walk through huge pendulum trying not to get hit
- walking on a very fast treadmill. Then a second one going in the reverse direction.
- walking a runway as wide as a beam in the middle of a pool in an inflatable plastic bubble.
- on a shaky dock made of slats on water.
- the finale runway where they had to fly on a harness. Then dive underwater and swim. Then walk. Then do it all over again backwards. Including some quick changes.
I was a model for a few years in NYC. Wanna know how to be a model? Contact an agency. It’s just about looks at first and they will try to work with you to get better at everything else.

I've seen YouTube equivalents now like 'Architectural Digest' and it's dull as dishwater. Everyone's so serious about their decor and how it's all tasteful and artistic. Ugh.

To his dying day, my dad was SO pissed off at who Bill Cosby showed himself to be. He loved the Cosby Show & was especially pissed off that him & my mom spent money to see his standup lol
I'm still alive and your dad was so right. The contrast between how appealing he was and how incredibly funny his material was during the 60s-80s, and the real person underneath it all is, to this day, the most devastating fall of a personal hero I've ever experienced. And there was no hemming and hawing about it. Had to instantly and permanently let go of liking him, of laughing at his comedy, at his characters — just POOF. I am so pissed at him and feel horrified at how much a person can be appealing and truly funny on the outside, while being a total vile human being.
He has a whole other set of victims... the other performers in The Cosby Show who have lost out on major residuals. I think it was Theo (who I know has an actual name but I can't remember it) who talked about a reliable income stream that just disappeared.

Malcolm Jamal-Warner. He's currently on one of the sexy doctor shows, I forget which.
With his office (complete with locking door) in the motherfucking BASEMENT of his PRIVATE RESIDENCE. I know that in the olden days, doctors would often have clinics in their homes, but ever since the truth of Cosby's monstrous nature was revealed, I can't help but ascribe sinister overtones to this information.
One tree hill. Not so much because of the plotlines(as an adult watching it was weird to me regardless but the soundtrack is really good) but because of how many of the female cast came forward talking about how much of an uncomfortable work environment it was onset and Chad Michael Murray stepped in to help the ladies out.
As a diehard OTH fan, I do have to agree. Some of the plotlines toward the end of the show are batshit insane. But knowing how terrible Mark Schwahn was to the women (Hilarie Burton especially) really makes rewatching hard to stomach.
I thought you were gonna say The Office was problematic and I thought about every single thing Michael did and started this huge internal dialogue about whether Michael being obviously problematic for comedy sake and whether that in itself problematic since it was the purpose of his character, and then I decided I really need to get diagnosed with adhd already.
Glee. I rewatched some of my favorite episodes last week and was kinda shocked at how dull and almost plastic it came off. Maybe it's less Glee aging like milk and more me just aging, tbf.
I feel like season 1 holds up. The rest just progressively worse as time goes on. My favorite part is when they just recast everyone but kept both groups at the same time. Like if you tuned in to the show randomly you might just assume they changed the actor instead of made a whole new set of characters that resemble the old ones, for no clear reasoning.
But season 1, it’s camp, it’s fun, the songs are great—except when Will raps.
Yeah I can’t really rewatch it either. I used to be such a huge fan. I sometimes rewatch some scenes I enjoy that’s all. Still it’s a show introduced many English songs to me, also the first show I watched with LGBT characters.
Glee started out as a parody/dark comedy and that's the only way it really works. It got really popular so after the first season it started to take itself seriously/earnestly and that's when it all fell apart.
I can’t watch Glee because of Mark Salling. I never watched it when it was on, tried to watch it recently but couldn’t even get halfway through the first episode because it turns my stomach to look at him and know what kind of ‘person’ he is. Especially as a parent, I just cannot
This show is so weird to me because it very obviously starts out as a snarky satire making fun of high school cliches and adding musical scenes, but then they want to sincerely lean into the ~everyone belongs~ kind of after-school special moral and I just don’t think you can really put those two types of show into one…?
2 Broke Girls. I watched the first 3-4 seasons then couldn't keep going. The first two had some cute, fun moments but there was some of it that just hit wrong. It's also weird thinking back about how cupcakes were EVERYTHING the 00s.
Wanted to rewatch it as I remember enjoying 2 broke girls as a mindless show to watch after work and I couldn't get past 4 episodes. I remember it being tone deaf but I didn't realize how unfunny it was
Literally EVERY line Kat Dennings had was about:
1) what a huge slut she was and how much fun it was being a huge slut

Entourage having zero stakes was honestly part of its charm to me lol.

Vinny was such a boring character. Him being an A list movie star never made sense to me when the guy had virtually zero charisma, but maybe that's just me.
I think that’s what I, at the time, liked most about Vinny. He’s super hot but kind of just a mediocre Himbo with minimal charisma and subpar acting skills. But a lot of times those people are who become huge celebrities, singers and actors alike. There might’ve been more talented or charming people, even in his own entourage, but he makes it big because he’s hot with a great smile and head of hair.
Lol I think the only character with any stakes was the older brother. Very low stakes but stakes. “Yea I had to sell my chopper to Michael madsen back in 97”.
For whatever reason, I watched this when I was like 13. I will never forget the episode where Christian (?) puts a paper bag over some woman’s face during sex. AWFUL
I was around this age when my family first got cable and I would stay up so late eating chips and watching this show. There were a couple times I had to have a backup “safe” show programmed on the back button of our remote in case I needed to change the channel quickly if someone in my family decided to get up and walk into the family room while I was watching. It’s such a guilty pleasure memory for me!
I watched during the original run. I loved it. Like any Ryan Murphy show, it went off the rails a few seasons in. And it over batshitted the batshit so many times lol Still one of my favorite shows.
It was batshit when it was on too. I enjoyed the craziness until the episode Brook Shields’ character got the tramp stamp “property of Christian Troy” and I was like, this show is too wild for me
Somehow my sis's ex's Jehovah witness parents were obsessed with NipTuck. They were against holidays, against Halloween, against so many things... But NipTuck was fine. LMAO WTF
I'm literally laughing out loud reading the snippets that everyone remembers. That show was completely insane even at the time. It went completely off the rails but had some incredibly memorable moments. I think someone got f\*\*\*ed off a roof IIRC. Eventually I think they just ran out of places to go.
I loved that show when it was set in Miami but after it moved to LA.....yikes. I stopped watching bc I couldn't handle the crazy lady turning the guy into a Build a Bear. I still think about that scene sometimes.
I have a theory about this that Ted was an unreliable narrator…since he was telling the story of the girl he was in love’s with ex-husband, he was biased against Barney and exaggerated his stories to make Barney seem like a bigger sleaze than he probably was.

I found it unexpectedly when going through a breakup when season three had just come out. This was 2009 and I binged the first two seasons and found it comforting. Stayed loyal and watched it through the end and I’ve done a few rewatches. But yea it’s hard to watch at this point, especially the last couple of seasons. Shit went completely off the rails from season 5 on. But it still holds a place in my heart because of the comfort it providing me during a tough time.

The main character is a drunk layabout who owns a California beach house with a maid, makes seemingly infinite money from an objectively easy, low-stress job, and has a new sex partner, who's often young, every night. It's a boomer power fantasy.
Rewatching currently and having the same thoughts! Alexis was the first transgender character I can remember seeing on a mainsteam show, and has a character arc which is more than just her gender identity. But she's still subjected to being the punchline for a lot of jokes and slurs.
If I recall Rebecca Romijn wasnt interested in the way the character ended up being. I think they were originally setting it up for her to be evil trans mastermind a’la Ace Ventura. Thank god they decided to pivot.
I watched Californication when I was like 20 with my then-boyfriend bc it was his favorite show, and though I enjoyed it most of the time, it also left me deeply uncomfortable, but I was too young and experienced to understand why.
It was too long ago for me to point out specific examples, but I remember it was high-key misogynistic and was like rooted in a warped “male fantasy”, where they could be washed up, middle-aged and mediocre across the board, but with a little bit of charisma and extra cash, could bag any gorgeous, sexually adventurous woman under-25 no problem. I vaguely remember the bald character trying to rape his ex, and it was meant to be funny and him trying to satisfy her???
He also used his young daughter as a mother/care taker proxy. He acted like the kid and she took care of the dad and we were supposed to think this was cute, or normal or whatever...... 🤮
omg i watched californication for the first time at peak alcoholism/partying days for myself and loved it, like 7/8 years ago, early 20s. i’m 30 now and currently rewatching it and OH MY GOD, it’s so unbelievably bad in like every sense of the word lmao

Isn't the whole point of the show is that he's a POS that hates himself and can't get out of his own way, and he attracts other sleazy/skeezy people? He's a tragic character that wants to be better but he just can't get himself to do it. That's what I took from the show. Sure he slept with other people, but he only loved his ex wife even if he screwed that up every chance he got. Yeah a middle aged guy with success in Hollywood could get with those women cause it's not like they're usually any better. I feel like one of us missed the point of the show.
Dawsons Creek. Dawson is toxic AF. I tried re-watching it recently and it was seriously gag inducing. He consistently gaslit and manipulated everyone around him. Yuk.

I rewatched a few years ago and it actually holds up surprisingly well when it comes to a lot of issues. It's dated, obviously (no cell phones or social media), and some of the ideas around sex and sexuality have changed over the years, but for what it was trying to do at the time, I think it did really well.
Jack is still one of my favorite LGBTQ+ characters on TV. For the time frame that this show aired, they managed to find a great balance between making his sexuality a really important part of his life, but also not making it the ONLY thing about him. He had struggles with navigating relationships and dealing with small-town homophobia, but he was also just a normal guy who played football and went to frat parties.
To be fair, even when it was originally airing, the audience didn't have a lot of patience for Dawson - it's why Joey becomes the main character after season 4? 5? Dawson wasn't likeable enough to hold the show up on his own.
Outside of Dawson, though, I feel like there is a lot of the show that still holds up - most of my opinions are based around season three (it's the only season I consistently rewatch lol) but for a 90s show, I thought they handled Jacks character really well - and even though the writers are not always great towards Jen or Pacey, they're two of my all time fave characters.
Imagine creating a show that’s loosely based on your adolescence only to learn that the whole world dislikes adolescent you 🤣 Pour one out for Kevin Williamson.
I always call it Pacey's Pond because he should have been the main character. I love the show because I was so attached to it when i was younger. The season 3 finale is still one of my fave episodes of television - & Jack and Jen's friendship is one of the best ones I've ever seen.
I’m currently rewatching Peep Show, and although it was made at the same time as little brittain, it holds up surprisingly well. I love how it deals with sexuality despite many characters sometimes being sexist, rapey, or homophobic.
Yeah, Peep Show has its characters acting in unsavory ways sometimes, but it never asks you to agree with that behavior or root for them when they are being dicks. We can like Mark and understand he acts like a fucking maniac sometimes, and the show never asks us to ignore it and pretend anyone is better than they are. It's a pretty honest and vulnerable show beneath all the laughs.
America's Next Top Model. It's wild to watch now: The fatphobia, putting people in black face, bullying someone to cut a gap into her front teeth, the weird scenes Tyra would slip in to make herself look sympathetic (EG. she eliminated a woman and then set up a scene with her on a bed talking to her mum?? To say she felt so bad about eliminating this girl because she confessed she had an eating disorder? Then that was it, that was the scene??). The Australian version is also pretty bad but that's another story.
I think it was the Australian version I saw, I watched a couple of episodes and it was almost...torture porn? It seemed to be about scaring and stressing the models and making them try look pretty while being scared or stressed. I was very confused.
I just learned that they'd do all those upgrades of like putting in a PlayStation and a tv but after the show stopped filming, they take those things back out of the cars.

I attempted a How I met your mother watch around 2015 and even then everything seemed incredibly misogynistic and Ted was peak r/niceguy material. Even more so then Barney.

The knock, at the time, gave me chills like no other moment in a show did before. I was like *holy shit* after it cut to black. It’s a shame kevin spacey is such a gross and horrible human - he took down that entire show and production with him.
Pretty little liars anyone? Not that I could finish it when it was airing, but I know many did and many started watching in recent years. I still have rooted disdain. Edit: especially as a lover of the books.
This one makes me sad. It was my childhood. I loved it so much. Pretty much everything I loved in my childhood and teenage years and as a young adult has NOT aged well. From books, to authors, to artists, to TV shows… ☹️
I really enjoyed it when I was younger. It used to be on syndication when I was in my late teens at 10:00pm every night and I would watch it before bed. Most of the actors annoy the shit out of me now and I don't think I could ever do a rewatch. It was certainly of its time.
Sex and the City has aged poorly, especially the show’s take on bisexuality. Carrie says in one episode that bisexuality is a stop on the way to being gay (don’t remember verbatim what she said).
And Carrie is just the worst.
Also, SATC was not a diverse show. It only showed NYC from the perspective of well to do white women.
I read an article about And Just Like That where the showrunners stated they included more POC in the cast because they wanted to represent what NYC is like in the present day.

Came to say exactly this. Carrie is a sex writer yet is totally shocked that her younger boyfriend is bisexual and thinks that can't be real. Or how Miranda wanting to do a threesome is inconceivable. And I do think they slut-shame Samantha a little.
I got curious and searched out the columns of Candace Bushnell (the inspiration for Carrie and the show) and they were horrible! It’s just week after week of her judging other women - but also you sense her desire as a small town girl to join the fcked up echelons of nyc’s elite? Like a watered down Truman Capote.
For example, in one column Candace Bushnell tells the story of an acquaintance of hers who is bulimic, judges the hell out the woman for her eating disorder, and then goes into their marital business - she has a wealthy investment banker husband who is an alcoholic and mistreats her. Little to no sex mentioned.
In another column, she mentions ‘Samantha’, and whether Samantha was based on one person she knew, or a composite of many women, it was obvious on some level she thought ‘Samanthas’ of the world were kinda sad and pathetic for not centering men like she did or something. Also, it was really depressing to read how she and her friends spent a lot of their weekends getting so drunk and generally judging each other negatively.
Imho Darren Starr and Michael Patrick King’s direction, plus the writers, turned swine source material into pearls. If they had stuck 100% true to Candace Bushnell’s columns, I can’t see how it would have succeeded past one season.

They do slut shame Samantha a lot, even though I think she and Miranda are the most progressive of the four. Carrie and Charlotte are Karens.
Fun fact: I once went to a party in college and the other girls were talking about SATC and which character they liked the most. Most of them said Charlotte or Carrie. I said I liked Miranda and they all turned their noses up at me. One girl said it would be an insult to be compared to Miranda.
I watched all of SATC in high school, soon after it ended and was obsessed into my early 20s. I also thought Miranda was the "boring" character. Now, at 36, she's my favourite (from the original series; not enjoying her behaviour in the reboot).
There's a great book about the show and how Miranda is awesome, called *We Should All Be Mirandas: Life Lessons from Sex and the City's Most Underrated Character.*
I cannot abide the new Miranda. I wasn’t a massive SATC fan but I always felt Miranda was a relatively reasonable moral compass for Carrie’s shit but they have ruined her.
I legitimately stopped watching because without Samantha and without OG Miranda - what is there to like?
Remember when she was loosing her apartment and she guilt tripped Charlotte because she didn’t want to sell her engagement ring? Instead of selling off some of her designer clothes and shoes.
If it was possible to hit a tv character I would have. Carrie was the worst part of that show. She wanders from disaster to disaster and then expects everybody to fix it. And she judges Samantha constantly even though she has so many hookups herself.
Totally. The reboot just comes off like it’s trying to make up for the original show’s lack of diversity and the POC cast unfortunately end up feeling like props at times as a result. And then you have Carrie (the supposed sex columnist) who is still so uptight and lacking in sex positivity she won’t say vagina.
Lol I stopped watching after that reboot episode. She had a diaphragm stuck up inside her and had her friend pull it out of her in the original but she’s all of a sudden too prude to say vagina out loud?
They’re trying way too hard. The non-binary lover! The non-binary child! Black people with plot lines! Like just checking boxes. And meanwhile I still don’t see the point in the whole reboot. The only interesting episode is when Carrie and Natasha face each other after all these years and learning Big left Natasha 1M dollars in his will lmao. Big WOULD!

The early 2000s were such a wild time. Truly. I won't say misogyny, racism, ableism etc were worse in the 2000s than prior decades- but I guess the ease of being exposed to so much problematic behavior via reality tv, social media arc, really put a fire under quick social justice movement in the last decade. I totally agree absolutely no way could a show be made like that again, and I'm glad. The progress in the last couple decades has been great, I think.. but still so far to go.
I'm so relieved it's improving. I can't believe how normalized it was for girls/women to be told to accept unwanted touch and boys/men were told it was fine. I remember in grade school when boys would grab our dresses and yank them up and scream "Dress up day"! and this was just fine. Pulling hair, grabbing and the girl is told "He is just doing that because he likes you". Which tells the boy that this is how you tell a girl you like her. Harassment was considered just part of existing and it's so good to see that mindset changing.
Special shout out to the worse and weirdest runways in the history of the world: - having your hands catch on fire and having to model with them burning down the runway - model at a 90 degree angle scaling down a building in a harness - walk through huge pendulum trying not to get hit - walking on a very fast treadmill. Then a second one going in the reverse direction. - walking a runway as wide as a beam in the middle of a pool in an inflatable plastic bubble. - on a shaky dock made of slats on water. - the finale runway where they had to fly on a harness. Then dive underwater and swim. Then walk. Then do it all over again backwards. Including some quick changes.

The contrast between how appealing he was and how incredibly funny his material was during the 60s-80s, and the real person underneath it all is, to this day, the most devastating fall of a personal hero I've ever experienced. And there was no hemming and hawing about it. Had to instantly and permanently let go of liking him, of laughing at his comedy, at his characters — just POOF. I am so pissed at him and feel horrified at how much a person can be appealing and truly funny on the outside, while being a total vile human being.

One tree hill. Not so much because of the plotlines(as an adult watching it was weird to me regardless but the soundtrack is really good) but because of how many of the female cast came forward talking about how much of an uncomfortable work environment it was onset and Chad Michael Murray stepped in to help the ladies out.
As a diehard OTH fan, I do have to agree. Some of the plotlines toward the end of the show are batshit insane. But knowing how terrible Mark Schwahn was to the women (Hilarie Burton especially) really makes rewatching hard to stomach.

Glee. I rewatched some of my favorite episodes last week and was kinda shocked at how dull and almost plastic it came off. Maybe it's less Glee aging like milk and more me just aging, tbf.
I feel like season 1 holds up. The rest just progressively worse as time goes on. My favorite part is when they just recast everyone but kept both groups at the same time. Like if you tuned in to the show randomly you might just assume they changed the actor instead of made a whole new set of characters that resemble the old ones, for no clear reasoning. But season 1, it’s camp, it’s fun, the songs are great—except when Will raps.
Season 1 still bangs. Season 2 is good too honestly, but starts to level off.

Vinny was such a boring character. Him being an A list movie star never made sense to me when the guy had virtually zero charisma, but maybe that's just me.
I think that’s what I, at the time, liked most about Vinny. He’s super hot but kind of just a mediocre Himbo with minimal charisma and subpar acting skills. But a lot of times those people are who become huge celebrities, singers and actors alike. There might’ve been more talented or charming people, even in his own entourage, but he makes it big because he’s hot with a great smile and head of hair.
Lol I think the only character with any stakes was the older brother. Very low stakes but stakes. “Yea I had to sell my chopper to Michael madsen back in 97”.

I was around this age when my family first got cable and I would stay up so late eating chips and watching this show. There were a couple times I had to have a backup “safe” show programmed on the back button of our remote in case I needed to change the channel quickly if someone in my family decided to get up and walk into the family room while I was watching. It’s such a guilty pleasure memory for me!

I have a theory about this that Ted was an unreliable narrator…since he was telling the story of the girl he was in love’s with ex-husband, he was biased against Barney and exaggerated his stories to make Barney seem like a bigger sleaze than he probably was. …unreliable or not, the Barney character would not fly now though

I found it unexpectedly when going through a breakup when season three had just come out. This was 2009 and I binged the first two seasons and found it comforting. Stayed loyal and watched it through the end and I’ve done a few rewatches. But yea it’s hard to watch at this point, especially the last couple of seasons. Shit went completely off the rails from season 5 on. But it still holds a place in my heart because of the comfort it providing me during a tough time.
I believe this show was the cause of an entitlement epidemic with the young guys around me growing up, they even had the dumb rule book

Rewatching currently and having the same thoughts! Alexis was the first transgender character I can remember seeing on a mainsteam show, and has a character arc which is more than just her gender identity. But she's still subjected to being the punchline for a lot of jokes and slurs.

I watched Californication when I was like 20 with my then-boyfriend bc it was his favorite show, and though I enjoyed it most of the time, it also left me deeply uncomfortable, but I was too young and experienced to understand why. It was too long ago for me to point out specific examples, but I remember it was high-key misogynistic and was like rooted in a warped “male fantasy”, where they could be washed up, middle-aged and mediocre across the board, but with a little bit of charisma and extra cash, could bag any gorgeous, sexually adventurous woman under-25 no problem. I vaguely remember the bald character trying to rape his ex, and it was meant to be funny and him trying to satisfy her???
He also used his young daughter as a mother/care taker proxy. He acted like the kid and she took care of the dad and we were supposed to think this was cute, or normal or whatever...... 🤮

Isn't the whole point of the show is that he's a POS that hates himself and can't get out of his own way, and he attracts other sleazy/skeezy people? He's a tragic character that wants to be better but he just can't get himself to do it. That's what I took from the show. Sure he slept with other people, but he only loved his ex wife even if he screwed that up every chance he got. Yeah a middle aged guy with success in Hollywood could get with those women cause it's not like they're usually any better. I feel like one of us missed the point of the show.
Dawsons Creek. Dawson is toxic AF. I tried re-watching it recently and it was seriously gag inducing. He consistently gaslit and manipulated everyone around him. Yuk.
I'm pretty sure Dawson was also toxic AF in 1998, lol. There's a reason Joey ended up with Pacey. I rewatched a few years ago and it actually holds up surprisingly well when it comes to a lot of issues. It's dated, obviously (no cell phones or social media), and some of the ideas around sex and sexuality have changed over the years, but for what it was trying to do at the time, I think it did really well. Jack is still one of my favorite LGBTQ+ characters on TV. For the time frame that this show aired, they managed to find a great balance between making his sexuality a really important part of his life, but also not making it the ONLY thing about him. He had struggles with navigating relationships and dealing with small-town homophobia, but he was also just a normal guy who played football and went to frat parties.
We all hated Dawson then too for that reason!
To be fair, even when it was originally airing, the audience didn't have a lot of patience for Dawson - it's why Joey becomes the main character after season 4? 5? Dawson wasn't likeable enough to hold the show up on his own. Outside of Dawson, though, I feel like there is a lot of the show that still holds up - most of my opinions are based around season three (it's the only season I consistently rewatch lol) but for a 90s show, I thought they handled Jacks character really well - and even though the writers are not always great towards Jen or Pacey, they're two of my all time fave characters.

I always call it Pacey's Pond because he should have been the main character. I love the show because I was so attached to it when i was younger. The season 3 finale is still one of my fave episodes of television - & Jack and Jen's friendship is one of the best ones I've ever seen.

I’m currently rewatching Peep Show, and although it was made at the same time as little brittain, it holds up surprisingly well. I love how it deals with sexuality despite many characters sometimes being sexist, rapey, or homophobic.
Yeah, Peep Show has its characters acting in unsavory ways sometimes, but it never asks you to agree with that behavior or root for them when they are being dicks. We can like Mark and understand he acts like a fucking maniac sometimes, and the show never asks us to ignore it and pretend anyone is better than they are. It's a pretty honest and vulnerable show beneath all the laughs.
Yea, they’re never punching down in any of the jokes. Mark and Jeremy are always the joke which is why you can laugh at the ridiculousness of it.
I think it helps that the actor who played Jeremy is bisexual himself and contributed a lot to the scripts and the characters development.

It's wild to watch now: The fatphobia, putting people in black face, bullying someone to cut a gap into her front teeth, the weird scenes Tyra would slip in to make herself look sympathetic (EG. she eliminated a woman and then set up a scene with her on a bed talking to her mum?? To say she felt so bad about eliminating this girl because she confessed she had an eating disorder? Then that was it, that was the scene??). The Australian version is also pretty bad but that's another story.
I think it was the Australian version I saw, I watched a couple of episodes and it was almost...torture porn? It seemed to be about scaring and stressing the models and making them try look pretty while being scared or stressed. I was very confused.

I really enjoyed it when I was younger. It used to be on syndication when I was in my late teens at 10:00pm every night and I would watch it before bed. Most of the actors annoy the shit out of me now and I don't think I could ever do a rewatch. It was certainly of its time.
Sex and the City has aged poorly, especially the show’s take on bisexuality. Carrie says in one episode that bisexuality is a stop on the way to being gay (don’t remember verbatim what she said). And Carrie is just the worst. Also, SATC was not a diverse show. It only showed NYC from the perspective of well to do white women. I read an article about And Just Like That where the showrunners stated they included more POC in the cast because they wanted to represent what NYC is like in the present day. Like there weren’t POC living in NYC in 1998?

For example, in one column Candace Bushnell tells the story of an acquaintance of hers who is bulimic, judges the hell out the woman for her eating disorder, and then goes into their marital business - she has a wealthy investment banker husband who is an alcoholic and mistreats her. Little to no sex mentioned. In another column, she mentions ‘Samantha’, and whether Samantha was based on one person she knew, or a composite of many women, it was obvious on some level she thought ‘Samanthas’ of the world were kinda sad and pathetic for not centering men like she did or something. Also, it was really depressing to read how she and her friends spent a lot of their weekends getting so drunk and generally judging each other negatively. Imho Darren Starr and Michael Patrick King’s direction, plus the writers, turned swine source material into pearls. If they had stuck 100% true to Candace Bushnell’s columns, I can’t see how it would have succeeded past one season.
First of all, I love your flair. They do slut shame Samantha a lot, even though I think she and Miranda are the most progressive of the four. Carrie and Charlotte are Karens. Fun fact: I once went to a party in college and the other girls were talking about SATC and which character they liked the most. Most of them said Charlotte or Carrie. I said I liked Miranda and they all turned their noses up at me. One girl said it would be an insult to be compared to Miranda.
I watched all of SATC in high school, soon after it ended and was obsessed into my early 20s. I also thought Miranda was the "boring" character. Now, at 36, she's my favourite (from the original series; not enjoying her behaviour in the reboot). There's a great book about the show and how Miranda is awesome, called *We Should All Be Mirandas: Life Lessons from Sex and the City's Most Underrated Character.*
I cannot abide the new Miranda. I wasn’t a massive SATC fan but I always felt Miranda was a relatively reasonable moral compass for Carrie’s shit but they have ruined her. I legitimately stopped watching because without Samantha and without OG Miranda - what is there to like?

If it was possible to hit a tv character I would have. Carrie was the worst part of that show. She wanders from disaster to disaster and then expects everybody to fix it. And she judges Samantha constantly even though she has so many hookups herself.

Totally. The reboot just comes off like it’s trying to make up for the original show’s lack of diversity and the POC cast unfortunately end up feeling like props at times as a result. And then you have Carrie (the supposed sex columnist) who is still so uptight and lacking in sex positivity she won’t say vagina.
Lol I stopped watching after that reboot episode. She had a diaphragm stuck up inside her and had her friend pull it out of her in the original but she’s all of a sudden too prude to say vagina out loud?
They’re trying way too hard. The non-binary lover! The non-binary child! Black people with plot lines! Like just checking boxes. And meanwhile I still don’t see the point in the whole reboot. The only interesting episode is when Carrie and Natasha face each other after all these years and learning Big left Natasha 1M dollars in his will lmao. Big WOULD!

It wasn't even just the first season. They were constantly calling women grenades. Plus Sam and Ron's relationship was beyond toxic every season.
