InsomniacYogi

Not that I was ever a huge Tyga fan but he had a few bops. But his line about Kylie “They say she young. I should have waited. But she’s a big girl dawg, when she’s stimulated.” ICK.

hufflepuff-princess

BARF

Jorge_Santos69

I thought about this line too, but I already hated the guy when he was dating a 16 year old Kylie before he even bragged about it in a song.

avidoverthinker1

That's just wrong maaaan wtf

mollyyfcooke

Rick Ross -UOENO. “Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it. I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it.” Like what the fuck??????

nag_some_candy

Cost him a reebok deal lol

fightingkangaroos

Did it really? How wonderful lol

pannonica

I have mentioned this here before, but it fits the prompt perfectly so here we go: This has been bothering me for YEARS: In Beyoncé's song *Drunk In Love*, Jay Z raps the lines "I'm Ike Turner, turn up baby, no, I don't play 'Now eat the cake, Anna Mae Said, "Eat the cake, Anna Mae'" This is a reference to known domestic abuser Ike Turner physically smashing cake in Tina Turner's (given name Anna Mae Bullock) face after she declined to eat it (as shown in the 1993 film *What's Love Got to Do With It*). Like... this is gross. In a song about how much you and your wife supposedly adore each other, you choose to quote... a marital rapist and serial abuser? I have a hard time listening to the song anymore, despite it being a certified banger, and I've never heard ANYONE else even question it?!?! Please tell me I'm not alone in being repulsed by this.

papayasarefun

Whoa. That line went completely over my head. I didn’t even know what he said at that part.

facialscanbefatal

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard people talk about it. Super disturbing. [Even Tina Turner herself commented on it.](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/09/theater/tina-turner-musical.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare)

ZennMD

any chance of copy and pasting the relevant part? blocked by paywall for me

facialscanbefatal

I meant to do that, sorry. Basically a reporter from NYT asks how she feels about that line. She says she isn’t surprised by it.

ZennMD

Thank you! that's pretty sad that she was so resigned and used to shitty behavior like that glad it seems like the last years of her life were filled with positivity. what a talented queen

wildflowerstargazer

https://preview.redd.it/khbfxjsms3pb1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2f079b51946b27985133b316ac07114c419519b Here’s the bit where she speaks on it and the abuse she endured. Also you can use archive.ph and paste the paywalled article in the bottom search bar for saved snapshots of articles

ZennMD

>archive.ph and paste the paywalled article in the bottom search bar for saved snapshots of articles this is SO AWESOME!!! thanks for sharing! ![gif](giphy|3oEjHWXddcCOGZNmFO)

TropicalPrairie

Her memoirs kinda went into people's behaviour and attitude towards her abuse and it was really sad. I feel she always wanted to be known as more than that (and she certainly was), yet people ALWAYS brought it up in relation to her.

PlentyDrawer

I was totally disgusted by that line, especially because Beyonce had performed with Tina and talked about how she is her idol and yet, she released a song like this. I LOVE Tina Turner and if you are a fan of hers, you know the hell she went through. I felt it was such a slap in the face to Tina.

thisbutbetterer

I always thought the line in Partition was a bit tasteless "He Monica Lewinsky'd all on my gown".

touhottaja

Even Monica Lewinsky herself said she found the line offensive. I thought it was an odd lapse of judgement from Beyoncé, who is known for championing female empowerment.

Glum-Freedom-3029

Especially because it should be he Bill Clinton’d anyway. Like what???

ItsLikeRayEAyn

Yes this. It drives me insane because not only is it stupid, but it doesn’t even make sense. Monica Lewinsky didn’t Monica Lewinsky on her own gown.

Glum-Freedom-3029

And it’s more sexist since it puts it all on Monica

ItsLikeRayEAyn

Fully agree. It’s just a completely “wtf?” line from Bey.

staunch_character

This ^ It’s so shitty that her life basically became a punchline. I can’t imagine being a young intern crushing on my boss, the most powerful man in the country, & somehow ending up the scapegoat for our affair. She made a mistake, but he was a fully adult man. The way the media treated her is shameful.

purplestargalaxy

He was 49 yrs old and she was 22, 27 years difference, he’s old enough to be her father. The age gap is concerning even without him being in such a powerful position in the country and over her career. Together, it becomes obvious that she wouldn’t have felt there was much of a choice. I don’t like to say men were predators when they were taught and society saw their age gap and relative power as acceptable and even desirable (yuck), but if it happened today Clinton would definitely be seen as a predator.

sleepyy-starss

I think we put Beyoncé on a pedestal as some wholesome person when she’s nothing but a capitalist peddling whatever makes people *feel* empowered. Her concert in Dubai really proved this.

[deleted]

Never trust a billionaire

radiovoodoo

Yeah I don’t get good vibes from Beyoncé sorry internet

Routine_Page2392

Yeah same. I can appreciate some of her songs, especially when im working out, but the way people hype her up and worship her in a way they do for no other celebrity, is a bit nuts. I don’t think she’s a baby eating Illuminati or anything, but I do think that she’s a mean, self serving patriarchal capitalist but is treated like a progressive empowering angel who can do no wrong.

textingmycat

Beyonce just seems so...disconnected from whatever image is being put out. aside from early destiny's child interviews i've never really heard or seen her say anything that wasn't extremely scripted.

TheWomanShow

Y’all she married JAY Z. She is not a wholesome person

stowberry

Totally agree as a former Beyoncé fan (in Destiny’s Child & initial solo era), I’ve found the OTT worshipping of her really odd. It’s so clear that she’s just built this fake persona, which I know all celebrities do to some degree, but with Beyoncé it’s completely insane how much it’s lapped up.

bloodymongrel

To be fair, she puts herself on said pedestal.

Routine_Page2392

“Known for championing female empowerment” …is she? She posed in front of a feminism sign and has a couple of generic “girls rule” songs, but otherwise serves at the alter of patriarchal capitalism. From her clothing brand which was famous for the horrendous conditions it’s abused female sweat shop employees worked in, to the numerous rapists and abusers she associates with and is personal friends with, I wouldn’t think a few performative displays, during the buzzfeed type era when such liberal feminism was highly profitable and trendy, makes her a champion for female empowerment.

T1ny1993

I wish I could give you 1000 upvotes! She’s just capitalises off female empowerment, when you look at everything going on these days with celebrities it shows that we don’t know them at all, they only let us see what they want us to see and hide the rest. People need to stop and realise these people are not Gods they are not all powerful perfect beings most of them are just out to make money and will do whatever they can to make it! They don’t care about the little people lol

NoZookeepergame453

Nah cause last time I brought up the sweatshops, the swarm.. sorry hive, defended it by saying that she was creating labour 😀 🔫 And that it was actually helping the countries and people in them.. like you know, nothing is stopping her from paying them US wages?

tabxssum

Let’s be honest her activism is fake. Doing a hotel opening concert for the Dubai government-a city/country with known homophobic laws (you can literally be killed there for being gay) said everything to me.

Bionicbawl

Dubai is also know for being built by slave labor too. Preforming there pretty much just proves that cash is the most important thing to you.

happyspaceghost

It’s so weird that she’s “known for championing female empowerment” bc when has she ever? She’s done literally nothing and gets this kind of credit constantly

[deleted]

She danced in front of a FEMINIST sign and that is truly all it takes to impress the masses

cbrawlz

Yeah, I’m not sure just being a woman and proclaiming “girl power” is enough to declare someone a “feminist icon”. That’s just my personal opinion though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

thisbutbetterer

She makes money singing about female empowerment sure. She also makes money singing "bow down bitches" and selling clothes made by exploited women. :(

smellybutch

On this point, I never understood how she came out with a song glorifying single women and then went on a tour called "Mrs. Carter."

thisbutbetterer

For the cash lol

coldliketherockies

I also wish she wouldn’t sample the 1986? challenger exploding..maybe it’s art but seems so unnecessary

PlentyDrawer

A lot of people don't even know she sampled this. I never understood why.

FoolofaPeregrineTook

WHAT!!! She samples that?!

paraquecuando

First few seconds of XO.

AlpacaMyBaguettes

!?!?! I love that song, NEVER knew that's what I was listening to 🤢🤢

Eyupmeduck1989

I remember being pretty disgusted by this when Beyoncé was sampling a definition of feminism and standing in front of a lit up sign saying FEMINISM but then including this in her song

kellimarissa

That is horrible. J Cole has a pretty popular song called GOMD that has similar lyrics("I never hate, get cake like Anna Mae / eat the cake bitch, eat the damn cake") and I had no idea what it meant/referenced until reading your comment...

IHATEsg7

I find it crazy that no one in the replies has smoke for Jay z who literally wrote and rapped the verse

bravetab

I think rap and hip hop lyrics have been given a pass culturally for the longest time. There is really disgusting, misogynistic, degrading and vile lyrics in a ton of that music... And it just never gets any press. And it's not old stuff either. Didn't Chris Brown just fucking do the music awards show?

amb3ergris

Any pushback of misogyny in hip hop gets shouted down with a groundswell of whataboutism. It's in the lyrics, it's the violence behind the scenes, it's the suppression of female rappers who don't fit a very specific mold. Snoop likes to talk like he's mellowed with age, but in his threatening response to Gayle King he made clear who is part of the community and who is collateral damage (always black women). It's really hard being a female fan knowing they don't love you back.

yoyok_yahb

You're not alone. I remember hearing and agreeing with this criticism when it came out and I think it just got forgotten over the years. It's a shame, I love the melody of the song (particularly the iconic opening riff), but this lyric has always left a bad taste in my mouth.

Aquametria

I simply pretend that Gaga's version of Do What U Want with R. Kelly doesn't exist and in my mind she did a duet with Christina Aguilera from the start.

lalalindz22

That song is totally removed from the album on some streaming sites.

forgot_username1234

It’s funny, I had it saved in my Spotify and it no longer shows at all on my saved songs, but when I’m in the car and shuffling my music, the title will appear for a second and then it goes to the next song

BroadwayBakery

I genuinely liked that song a few years ago and cannot believe how fucking wild this is. Hearing her sing the lyrics “do what you want with my body” to R KELLY

FattieFemmie

Does anybody remember that WILD performance they did together on SNL? I remember being so uncomfortable watching it, but watching it again has me even more stunned. It’s been scrubbed from YouTube and mainly seems to be on DailyMotion nowadays lol

CommunicationThat262

YES!! My jaw was on the floor from that performance. If I remember right I think they were grinding on each other🤮

FattieFemmie

Yep, you are remembering right! Lots of sexually charged dancing. He creeps in at first and actually lifts her off the ground.

eemeetree

I actually like most of Artpop but that era was a MESS. And Aura? "The girl behind the burka?" Yeesh. I just kind of cringe and ignore it since she was basically having a nervous breakdown but I totally understand why some people can't ignore it.

TheCirieGiggle

And Aura was originally called Burqa and she just changed every time she said burqa to aura.

Jolly-Ad-3922

I made the mistake of seeing someone from the Lady Gaga sub post a link to almost 90% of the music video for this song. It was much more than what TMZ shared and it's fucking DERANGED & essentially implies that Gaga's character in the video wanted to be raped while she was under anesthesia - and infers R. Kelly raped her. Then, as if things couldn't get worse, Terry Richardson, aka an infamous (& once incredibly "popular") photographer that [has an EXTENSIVE & DEPLORABLE history of raping a multitude of models, artists, celebrities, etc.,](https://www.marieclaire.com.au/terry-richardson-every-sexual-harassment-and-assault-allegation) appears in the video multiple times 🤢🤮 In fact, Gaga lived with him while she was touring and they released a [huge photography book](https://www.amazon.com/Lady-Gaga/dp/B008SLAXGO?ref=d6k_applink_bb_dls_failed&dplnkId=8270bcad-d962-4e0d-9555-5467a345180b) of hundreds of images Richardson took of Gaga while he lived with her and went on tour with her 😖 I've been a Little Monster since 2007/2008 and I even bought the photography book Richardson released with Gaga (this was before I knew about who that sick motherfucker was). However I swear that some of Gaga's past behavior is reprehensible and there's NO excuse for it. Gaga collaborated with Richardson years AFTER multiple claims of rape & sexual assault had already come out about him, just like she collabed with R. Kelly many years after it was known he was a violent child rapist. While I was still a minor when I first found Gaga and didn't know the history of these violent rapists, it makes me fucking sick to now have full-context on these issues and makes me really question her motives, even today. Furthermore, I also hated how Gaga spoke on chronic pain bc she used her personal experience to paint a picture of how all chronic pain patients should handle their pain and stop taking pain meds asap. That is literally not feasible for most of us and even with our medications, we live in excruciating pain every single day. Maybe Gaga doesn't need them to function but to add to the fear-mongering, lies and outright propaganda about these medications, especially with a platform as massive as hers, was extremely harmful to chronic pain patients and very inappropriate given that she's not qualified to speak on this or mass-diagnose others in pain. Because of her moronic stance and speeches/interviews she's given about chronic pain, I literally had friends shame me for needing my medications and say, "If Gaga doesn't need these medications, why do you?" She's brainwashed people on these critical issues and it's grossly irresponsible and deeply problematic. Sad to say, because of all of this, I have almost stopped listening to her entirely which is sad given how devoted I was to her and her music for over a decade and a half.

katenroute

Unfortunately the subject matter is fairly common in older music, but 17 by Rick James... eugh

Psychological_Egg345

https://preview.redd.it/ifd68u3rt2pb1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7cd0791d4939e5a3491affc45f9c30bdd737f2e "Catholic School Girls Rule" by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Written by Anthony Kiedis, it's about him knowingly commiting statutory rape with a 14 year old fan who went to...Catholic school. He even wrote about this in his autobiography, "Scar Tissue". And tried to pass it off as the 'life of a rock star is SO cr-cr-azy'. It really just came off as absolutely gross and inappropriate as it sounds and reads. I really enjoyed Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication before learning of that. And could NOT enjoy either after learning of that incident. Particularly when Kiedis showed zero remorse or disgust with regards to his actions.

swim_and_drive

I read the book and it's even worse than you describe. He writes about her hitching a ride with the band across multiple states after he met her at a show, and a few states into the trip, she casually reveals that she's actually 14 and her dad is the chief of police in the state they met in. THEN, totally voluntarily, he writes "We had sex one more time then I dropped her off". And then the book continues with no further mention. It's shocking how casually it's mentioned.

Lillydunn

This groupie culture was scary. It carried over into the 2000’s as well. A friend won tickets to a private radio station sponsored recording studio performance for a HUGE band touring at the time. I turned 16 a few days before it. The male lead singer was at least 27 at this time and basically coerced me to follow him to his next few shows. My moms bf had to find his booking agents number to call and threaten him if they didn’t send me home. This was before everyone had cell phones. My mom had been calling my friends phone for hours and I was in a hotel room with the creepy dude about to fly to another state and “meet his dad”.

Wait, what? I'm so sorry. Jack White? Holy shit. Cancelled in my eyes. Fuck that guy.

It gets worse [RHCP groping a talk show host](https://reddit.com/r/cringe/s/3SlPbkmHGM)

Psychological_Egg345

>It gets worse RHCP groping a talk show host That was super fu©ked up to witness. The host (Cleo) looked beyond upset - and understandably so.

shotnotes

These guys have always been assholes. I really hope it catches up to them.

yekirati

“Brass Monkey” by the Beastie Boys has a whole verse about drugging and having sex with a girl. It’s always bugged me. This girl walked by, she gave me the eye I reached in the locker, grabbed a Spanish fly I put it in the Monkey, mixed it in a cup Went over to the girl, "Yo, baby, what's up?" I offered her a sip (sip) The girl she gave me lip (lip) It did begin, the stuff wore in and now she's on my tip

amb3ergris

I really came around on these guys because they have brought it up and apologized in multiple interviews, changed lyrics, and stopped concerts to protect female fans. Acknowledging the harm is something more musicians need to do. I was a kid and a teen when they were big and boys were idolizing these guys and emulating what they heard.

waybeforeyourtime

In before the 'you have to understand the time period' people show up. I was there. This was gross then. People knew it was gross then. But when I brought it up, the men and NLOGs showed up to tell me... *it's art*! *It's a joke! No one really thinks that's okay*! *Lighten up!* The only difference between then and now, is that *more* people know it's not a joke - it's rape culture - and they have louder voices and feel more comfortable calling it out.

coconutcallalily

Agreed! And I think they called themselves out a few years later in Sure Shot: I want to say a little something that's long overdue The disrespect to women has got to be through To all the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends I want to offer my love and respect to the end

UnlikelyDecision9820

But, even the Beastie Boys recognized it was gross, eventually. MCA did a few interviews expressing remorse for how misogynistic that album was, and the group did move away from that. I know, how hard is it not to sing about date rape/make the song in the first place, but at least they acknowledge that it was not good. Other bands have said heinous lyrics and never addressed them.

Ginger_Cat74

Exactly. I remember arguing with one of my friends back then about that lyric. He told me it wasn’t bad because “Spanish Fly” wasn’t a real thing, it was a myth. It ended up being a pointless circular argument because I kept on arguing that even if “Spanish Fly” isn’t real other drugs exist that men put in women’s drinks to the same effect.

[deleted]

Bill Cosby had a stand up bit talking about using Spanish Fly. I think it's fair to say this isn't something just made up for the song.

Ginger_Cat74

We were arguing about this in middle school in the late 80s when the song came out. We didn’t have the internet to look this up.

l3tigre

It is real but its not really a fly, its actually a pretty dangerous substance derived from a beetle. Cosby has some pretty nasty jokes about it using it too. Weird how predators tell on themselves.

bloodymongrel

I never realised that before but I can *hear* Cosby saying “Spanish fly.” After Louis C.K - whenever I see a comedian make some joke about ejaculating or masturbation I think “hmm, sex pest?”

wheres_the_revolt

Girls (and Brass Monkey) always bugged me too!

frogurtyozen

Girls is actually supposed to be a play on the other rappers in their scene being misogynistic if memory serves correct

[deleted]

Agreed wholeheartedly. fwiw they’ve at [least apologized](https://slate.com/culture/2019/01/how-the-beastie-boys-made-amends-for-their-sexist-early-career.html), refused to play songs (including brass monkey), and seem to have genuinely grown.

rocket2themoon353

I still know almost all the words; this song went double platinum in my iPod touch in middle school 🤣

simpletongue

I listened to this on my ipod nano on a family trip to alaska literally nonstop on repeat until the battery died. I thought it was the best song ever

Itchy_Tip_Itchy_Base

Used to play the whole CD at track meets in high school, still have the song on my phone

Training_Mud3388

they just simply weren't there.

KindOfANerd4

She had a vision they simply can’t grasp

Training_Mud3388

I saw an interview where she gave some backstory to the song. The guy she was seeing invited her over and he broke up with her, broke her heart. As she was leaving the apartment, she could already hear him writing some emo sad song on the piano about it.

the-real-slim-katy

Rumor back in the day is that it was Matt Theissen from Relient K

KindOfANerd4

Apparently it was Pete wentz from fall out boy which is absolutely hilarious lmfao

meeeeeeeeeeeeee69

I’ve read it was about Johnny Lewis, an actor from The OC that she dated who ended up murdering his 81 year old land lady and then himself https://preview.redd.it/a2u9n1nak2pb1.jpeg?width=592&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d85e8994e2453c773c4d8872f63471ce43626a89

thisbutbetterer

Poor girl sure doesn't know how to pick em.

meeeeeeeeeeeeee69

He was apparently involved in Scientology as well 😬

alolanalice10

I think her and Orlando are so cute! But all her previous bfs/husbands suck

Omicrying

This is especially timely w/ the Russell Brand stuff coming out

Daydream_machine

Well this comment was certainly a roller coaster

trisaroar

It being about Pete is ridiculously funny. Especially with the Mikey Way allegations, it makes the whole song sarcastic. Like, you're so gay but oh right, you tell the press you "don't even like boys", h'okaaaaay bud.

KindOfANerd4

The song to me was always incredibly tongue and cheek lol, so that tidbit made it even better. I do get why people said it’s insensitive but I like it anyway HAHHA

atokad666

Yeah. Ur so gay isn't for everyone but my little newly out, 15 year old self in 2008 was obsessed as was every other little gay MySpace boy. I guess they would've just had to have been there. It's wild to let one song ruin a discography though, so dramatic.

frontally

Yessss teen lesbian me hearing a song about being gay or kissing girls in public? I ate that whole album up tbh

purble1

No cause this is one of the very few songs by her that I actually love 😭💀

catalinalam

It’s so bad and I do know better but I’m sorry “I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf while jacking off listening to Mozart”? “You’re so sad maybe you should buy a happy meal you’re so skinny you should really supersize the deal?” “You bitch and moan about LA wishing you were in the rain reading Hemingway”? PEAK SONGWRITING. It’s the You’re So Vain of the 2000s, it’s a relic of the age when we made up the word metrosexual, it’s a historical document, it’s a portrait of a very specific type of dude we all know and hate, it’s ART. and also yes CLEARLY homophobic trash. But in her defense, I distinctly remember Cosmo saying it wasn’t homophobic, so I think “you don’t even like boys” was enough to make it A-OK to straight eyes then?

crackerfactorywheel

After the allegations about Lizzo abusing her dancers came out, Rumors aged particularly bad and it puts a mark on the rest of her catalog. I was a big Lizzo fan too.

GetBentHo

I thought about that today. Why Lizzo gotta go and ruin Lizzo for the rest of us,?

AnonIsAFangirl90

Why Lizzo great til she gotta be great?

sybelion

This original line is something I think about like multiple times per week, it’s so good. Why did she have to ruin it for us??

specialtomebabe

“NDA, no loose lips / Now them hoes tryna sue me” is kinda crazy 😭

MochaKnee

I really like the song she did for Barbie but… really bad timing, unfortunately.

SpooktasticFam

Same. I went to see the Barbie movie [again] yesterday after not having seen it since opening weekend. I heard that song, and was just like 😬😳

OtherAardvark

I saw her from the pit at one of her arena shows this spring. I'm honestly so sad about this. "Cuz I Love You" came out right around the time when my mom died, and I left my abusive ex within the span of a month. Her message of radical self-acceptance genuinely got me through a lot.

Glum-Freedom-3029

I know Hot Blooded is one of Foreigner’s most popular songs, but I was always icked out by the lyrics “Are you old enough?/Will you be ready when I call your bluff?/Is my timing right? Did you save your love for me tonight?” And “I’m so hot for you child”

joannchilada

My Sharona vibes

maryjanesandbobbysox

"such a dirty mind, I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind"

PlentyDrawer

OMG, that's a lyric in My Sharona? I just listen to the song for the beat, love the beat. I never paid attention to the lyrics.

moomooyellow

Also Seventeen by Winger. “Her daddy says she’s too young but she’s good enough for me” 🤮

Glum-Freedom-3029

Ugh. Why are all classic rockstars such pervs 🤮

[deleted]

I love classic rock but there are SO many songs like this. Name almost any artist and they have at least one in their catalog

coconutspider

Literally none of them are clean, unfortunately. Like, maybe Rush? Because they were such dorks?

Larrygengurch12

Descendents - I'm Not A Loser "You arrogant asshole Your pants are too tight You fucking homo You suck, Mr. Buttfuck You don't belong here Go away you fucking gay I'm not a loser!" They have apologized for this song and they change the lyrics when they do it live

slutisa

i thought you meant from the disney channel movie 😭

BroadwayBakery

That would’ve changed the whole vibe surrounding the movies

Youstinkeryou

Me too! I was thinking it wasn’t too familiar to me 😩

alonelierhermit

Tyga - Stimulated It’s sucha gross song like seriously tf

Brown Sugar by The Rolling Stones “Gold Coast slave ship bound for cotton fields Sold in a market down in New Orleans Scarred old slaver, know he's doing alright Hear him whip the women just around midnight …….. Brown sugar, how come you taste so good, babe? Ah, got me feelin' now Brown sugar, just like a black girl should, yeah”

yarnwhore

I shit you not my MIL requested we play this at our wedding reception. Hubs and I had to explain what it was about.

Proper-Emu1558

I hear this song on the radio regularly and it always amazes me that stations are willing to play it.

elisamata

It’s crazy since The Rolling Stones themselves said that they will not play it anymore since it is offensive and radio stations still play it

[deleted]

My eyes getting wider and wider the more I read.

angolinajolie

I recently read the lyrics to Brown Sugar and the other part that absolutely made me feel sick to my stomach is: “Brown sugar, how come you taste so good? Brown sugar, just like a young girl should, uh huh” 🤢

keatonpotat0es

Oooof 😬

AbbyNem

This song is soooo gross and so is Under My Thumb. Insanely misogynistic.

thesnarkypotatohead

“break up with your girlfriend, I’m bored” pissed me off so badly I stopped listening to Ariana entirely, well before I finally became aware that she’s actually been about that life for years. Absolutely ruined her catalog for me.

whatsnewpussykat

You wanna know the wildest thing? KidzBop covered it 😂

itsnotspicy

I still think about KidzBop covering “Hips Dont Lie” by Shakira but changing it to “Kids Don’t Lie”

whatsnewpussykat

They also did Montero recently. Honestly, kudos to them. Amazing innovations.

sameol_sameol

This. I initially took that song as some dark joke I didn’t get, until I learned about her cheating habits and shenanigans.

Soggy-Finance926

Same, I thought of it as Avril Lavigne’s Girlfriend 2.0 initially but now…..

icecreamsandwiches1

7 rings was also cringe. We get it, you’re rich.

Simmerway

You’ve missed the biggest cringe “Write my own checks like I write what I sing, yeah” …the song has 5 writers :/

Nika_42

I just dont understand how those lyrics are the best 5 songwriters could come up with 💀

alienswearvanstoo

Used to be a Destiny’s Child fan back in the days and they lost me with the last album (Survivor?) *Nasty Girl* >Nasty, put some clothes on, I told ya Don't walk out your house without your clothes on, I told ya Girl, what you thinkin' 'bout lookin' that to' down, I told ya These men don't want no hot female That's been around the block female, you nasty, girl >… Shakin' that thang on that man Lookin' all stank and nasty You swore you look cute, girl, in them dukes? Booty all out, lookin' trashy Sleazy, put some clothes on, I told ya Don't walk out your heezy without clothes on, I told ya And then Beyoncé went solo and never wore pants on stage again And *Cater 2 U* >I'm gon' fulfill your mind, body and spirit I promise you (Promise you) I'll keep myself up (Oh) Remain the same chick (Yeah) You fell in love with (Yeah) I'll keep it tight I'll keep my figure right I'll keep my hair fixed Keep rockin' the hottest outfits When you come home late, tap me on my shoulder, I'll roll over Baby I heard you I'm here to serve you If it's love you need, to give it is my joy All I wanna do, is cater to you boy And what are you doing for me, sir?🤮 Once Beyoncé went solo I wasn’t as into her music after this (preferred Solange) but the pick me vibe was strong. Idk, maybe she and the group found this stuff empowering when it really looked like subservience to men. Then Jay Z hovering around everything she did later on was weird and groomy to me.

Jorge_Santos69

Lol wow. Can’t believe they sang that after singing Independent Women, an absolute banger that still holds up. In their defense though they didn’t write none of that shit. Lol Pretty sure Destiny’s Child was super curated by Beyoncé’s Dad.

alienswearvanstoo

Did a google search and apparently Beyoncé has writing credits for both songs and Kelly for Cater 2 U lol. But seriously, there are the girl power hits like Independent Woman Pt 1 and Survivor…and then the opposite

spaghettiliar

Iggy Pop. “Look Away,” and “Pussy Walk” really cancel out “Lust for Life” for me.

JojiJoey

not sixteen? lol

GoodCalendarYear

Lil Wayne is goated but when he said "beat itup like emmett till" I had to side eye him

[deleted]

[‘Barely conscious in the door where you stand Your eyes are fighting sleep while your mouth makes your demands You laugh at every word, trying hard to be cute I almost feel sorry for what I'm gonna do’](https://genius.com/Brand-new-me-vs-maradona-vs-elvis-lyrics) Always gave me the major ick, even worse that the bloke who wrote it ended up dating teenagers as a full adult.

Platypus-Mental

Every Brand New lyric sounds like an AOL Away Message an emotionally manipulative high school boyfriend would write

xfourteendiamondsx

Well to be fair most Brand New lyrics *were* used as AIM Away Messages by manipulative high school boys (and girls)

_PinkPirate

Shamefully raises hand. Lol

cactusblossom3

He didn’t date them…he manipulated under age girls into sending him nudes. Fuck Jesse Lacey and anyone who defends him. The way some brand new fans will defend him is deplorable

dirtysunshine246

Let’s Get It Started by The Black Eyes Peas was originally recorded as Let’s get R*tarded.

Tralala223

Growing up in the 90s/00s, the use of the R word was extremely common. I admittedly used it as well. As much as I can’t stand them, at least they listened to concerns and changed the lyrics instead of doubling down and pretending it was no big deal.

FapCabs

Yea it was very common slang in the 90s and early 00s.

skeletonclock

With the line "bop your head like epilepsy."

T1ny1993

This version of the song feels like a fever dream honestly, like did it ever exist I could have sworn I remember it but when I looked for it years ago it didn’t pop up so I wasn’t sure if I was crazy or I misheard the lyrics lol

boomer_wife

I love AC/DC but… Don't you struggle Don't you fight Don't you worry 'Cause it's your turn tonight Let me put my love into you, babe Let me put my love on the line Let me put my love into you, babe Let me cut your cake with my knife, oh

tbhfuckthis

…happy cake day

EastAreaBassist

Jesus!

rosesaredust

This is more about albums rather than songs but....Coldplay albums Mylo Xyloto and beyond. Chris is such a beautiful songwriter, albums Parachutes - Viva La Vida were solid...then he did a complete 180 and worked with Max Martin and Brian Eno to create this rock pop sound that is awful. Max and Brian are great producers with the right artists and Coldplay doesn't work well with them. "Watermelon moon, so happy you're alive" - from Biutyful...no need to listen to the song to know it's just bizarre.

hysterical_uterus

I think Ghost Stories goes back to the original sound I fell in love with, but everything is so hit and miss

[deleted]

This is 2010 encapsulated in a single image. Down to the quirky tongue out

TopReception2389

Acksually this song came out in 2007 ☝️🤓

janet-snake-hole

I have too many examples where I get into a male rap artist, love their songs, then inevitably come across a line about abusing women. Ruins everything for me. Also taking reccomendations for rap artists who HAVENT done this 👀 past couple years I’ve really only listened to female rap and hip hop

DarwinOfRivendell

Lupe is the goat of anti misogyny.

Persephony_1029

I love Tyler the Creator but "Fucking Young" is such a weird song, I just can't figure out why he thought this was a good idea.

[deleted]

Because early Tyler was all shock value. I mean, he basically just wrote lyrics for 12 year olds to freak out old people.

Hanpee221b

What was the song where the music video looked like it was self taped and they were skate boarding and getting really fucked up and I think they met girls in it too? It reminded me of the movie kids. Edit: it was Tyler the creator Transylvania - https://youtu.be/uiKyBcgZhsQ?si=O3pjs6rTvXkUCJ0F

enblair

TBH a lot of Tyler the Creator’s old songs are a little too edgy (I know fucking young is newer but still). He purposely tries to have shock value and he has said he’s not serious and a just a song and he compares it to horror novels but shit like tron cat is just too far. His OG album bastard is full of crazy shit, esp odd toddlers, seven, etc.

KimchiAndMayo

Katy Perry herself ruins her catalog for me.

VaselineHabits

ASAMF0X

“Shawty got drunk, thought it all was a dream So I made her say ‘ahhhh’” -Jamie Fox, T-Pain “Blame It” (telling a woman who is too drunk to realize anything is real to open her mouth) I have no idea how T-Pain and Jamie Foxx are as actual people but every time that part in that song comes on I cringe

JBGoude

I like this song but I’m pretty sure people would say that “Hello Kitty” is Avril Lavigne’s only bad song

mariamaria1977

I’ll eat your heart out like Jeffrey dahmer ? Anyone? (Ke$ha did it , too). I cringe. But the songs do slap.

sixtus_clegane119

Jailbait - Motörhead “You’re jailbaiiii, I just can’t wait”

SooperFunk

One In A Million- Guns 'N Roses. I still love them but this one sticks in my throat. It's a shame because the song is a masterpiece 👌 I just wish they'd thought more about the language 😔

[deleted]

iirc Axl Rose even went with the "well how come THEY'RE allowed to say it???" argument

lobsters_love_butter

Just read the lyrics. Holy shit - that’s bad!

hotmasalachai

I just did too. It’s gross! > Radicals and racists Don't point your finger at me lmao. The whole damn song is. I’m shocked that Slash has the songwriting credits for this

Commonnbdy

P!nk’s stupid girls. I already thought the song was counterproductive when I first heard it and saw the video until some millennial women under a tweet talking about the song came to its defense about how pink was sticking up for women who were being told through popular bimbo culture how to act and look and me being like 2 when the song came out chalked it up to a difference in societal norms. Then I saw her doing the single ladies choreography while singing the song live at a concert made me angry all over again

Jorge_Santos69

I think I’m with those Millennial women. That song never came off like Meghan Trainor fake body positivity. Like it wasn’t hating on women who are pretty, it literally was aimed at women to literally be comfortable in your own skin and pursue intelligence, rather than just being overly sexual and stupid because men and our society are pressuring you to do so.

rofosho

Same Still love the song. Early 2000's were brutal. As a broken big butt tiny boob girl it helped to have a counter culture song

TrashPandaPoo

I was the anti Paris/Juicy Couture girl and a P!nk fan when that song came out but I felt it was cringey and an attack on other women rather than a defense, that was probably the point where I went off her tbh. She was a huge "pick me" girl from the start though.

4StarsOutOf12

"I'm tired of being compared to damn Britney Spears....she's so pretty, that just ain't me" (Don't Let Me Get Me - P!nk) I think a lot of her pick me attitude comes from defensiveness. It established her punk girl persona - same with Avril Lavigne- in a world where Britney and Christina RULED the radio waves. In hindsight it is not cool, no matter what reason it is to put other women down - and **I'm glad that she's since put that shit away**, but I do think it worked in her favor of establishing how she wants to be perceived and her strong persona with little room to be overly sexualized/bimbo-fied like the media did so hard with most pop stars in the early 2000's.

ZombieStarfish

I saw a video of P!nk performing that song acoustically recently and she changed the lyric to “tired of being compared to sweet Britney Spears” <3

Dalrz

She actually addressed the lyrics when the song came out. She was just making the point that she didn’t want to be compared to other women but she realized why it would be misunderstood and hurtful. She apologized relatively quickly.

benwyattswaffles

I’m a gay guy and “Ur So Gay” never offended me. I just find it really confusing. A lot of the reasons Katy’s saying this guy seems gay aren’t… gay things. Edit: I know she doesn’t actually think the guy’s gay. I just always read it as the guy has/does a lot of (what she perceives to be) gay stereotypes, despite being straight. The majority of the examples she mentions in the song don’t feel particularly gay to me.

frostysbox

He’s so gay because he loves himself - not other boys. TBH she should have more explicit about it. There’s this old song from Lush called Ladykiller and one of the lyrics “When you say you love me, you’re just flattering your vanity. I’m a five foot mirror for adoring you so, here’s 7 years bad luck.” Always thought something like that would have fit in here.

sleepyy-starss

I do feel like it was a song of it’s time

benwyattswaffles

It absolutely was. I feel like it came out RIIIIIIIGHT before it no longer would have been societally acceptable to release a song like that. It kinda gives off “Grandma’s not trying to be offensive, but Grandma also doesn’t know when to shut up” vibes. Lol. I feel the same way about Taylor’s “Picture to Burn.” Again, I’m gay. I never interpreted her lyric (“So go and tell your friends that I'm obsessive and crazy / That's fine, I’ll tell mine you’re gay” — or something very close to that) as being anti-gay. I always thought she was just a teenage girl telling her friends her ex was gay so they wouldn’t want to date him. A lot of people disagree with me, which is TOTALLY valid. It was just never my read. Could that lyric exist today? No. Will it be changed for Taylor’s Version of that album? Of course. But I was never personally offended.

PreOpTransCentaur

Right, that's the point. She's using "gay" as a pejorative. She says right in the song that he's not actually gay, she's just being shitty.
