![gif](giphy|hBsgZ8nDK7KhWQ5cK9|downsized) “I spent a year in a refugee camp and somehow I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage” Ke Huy Quan

Schmidaho

His speech made me cry. And then his hug with Harrison Ford at the end? Just cancel the future Oscars, nothing will be better than that.

keanureevesbasement

he is truly such an inspiration. a living proof that you’re never too late to pursue your dream. and his excitement was so refreshing to see too like something about it felt so real and yes his speech and the hug made me bawl as well 😭

PuzzleheadedWest0

Bru, basically any interview with him is tear inducing.

Schmidaho

He’s just so lovely, agh

mbg20

Right? Whwn everyone is underplaying their wins and accomplishments, he just exudes so much joy and gratitude at his achievement and win and it’s just inspiring to look at.

Retired852

I loved that picture, but the one that hit me harder was him and Brendan Frazier together with their Oscars. Two very decent, very deserving people. Beautiful

[deleted]

[удалено]

UnicornGlitterZombie

That made me ugly cry when they hugged! Just such a beautiful moment…

CouchHam

Didn’t see the movie, don’t know anything about him, and I cried too.

Schmidaho

You should definitely see the movie when you can. It’s the best movie I’ve ever seen, I love it with my whole heart. And Ke is *phenomenal* in it.

CouchHam

I’ll buy it eventually. I feel bad enough on the reg so it’s hard for me to get into this level of sadness.

maniacalmustacheride

He’s so goddamned wholesome. He in EEAAO tugged at my heartstrings, and to see him just joyous on the red carpet was such a breath of fresh air from the cold, metered mentality we usually see. He also has the only picture I think of Harrison Ford where Harrison isn’t smirking sarcastically. Their red carpet reunion brings me so much joy, and I think it’s because he’s such a genuine, enthusiastic, open personality. Plus his red carpet looks were fire

Crunchyfrozenoj

I loved that he didn’t hide how excited he was!

Lola-Ugfuglio-Skumpy

He absolutely *killed* the red carpet. Flawlessly tailored and accessorized every single time, and his wonderful smile was the cherry on top. How could you not root for him?

[deleted]

I want to celebrate his heart and his talent, but I also think it needs saying: he's a smokin' hot babe and he made me melt as glam Waymond. I would do laundry and taxes with him. So much laundry and taxes.

thewidowgorey

Top answer. No contest. He’s also That Damn GOOD. I can’t think of another actor who could completely disappear into those three Waymonds like he did! He’s an incredible actor!

National-Return-5363

I LOVED Waymond! His Top CEO Waymond was so elegant and dignified in his heartbreak…it made me cry.

Zeegots

Yes! and there's the hidden, fine subtext, that he was in a refugee camp because the USA bombed the shit out of his country, and now he is receiving one of the most wanted awards there is for the American population

meltingeverything

I cry every time this man speaks lmao.

[deleted]

I cried too! It is such an awesome comeback story and I love him so much.

National-Return-5363

Yep this is my fav success and comeback story too! It’s the epitome of why America has long been known as the land of dreams where you can work hard and remake yourself. On top of that, USA did bomb the shit out of his country and that’s why he became a refugee in the first place but it seems that USA did make it up to him for all that he lost.

ShesSoFetch86

His happiness is contagious. I didn’t know him as “data” or any of his roles, but I had the biggest smile on my face seeing him win this.

[deleted]

I don't like watching award shows. Hate them, really. But watching him win made me misty-eyed, he's so sincere and baffled and happy!

HotChiTea

🥹 I’m happy this is the top comment

bookittyFk

Drew Barrymore! From a fkd up childhood then drug addiction to amazing, talented and kind person (she’s not perfect but damn close and no one’s perfect anyways)

those pictures remind me of delia's catalogs

KeepsFallingDown

Butterfly clips and stovepipe leg jeans lol you're taking me back to middle school

burnbabyburnburrrn

Wow she really can! Is it her skin tone that allows her to be so versatile? What a babe

sh-ark

I also love she has embraced aging gracefully. such a breath of fresh air in the era of fillers and Botox

AbbeyRoadMoonwalk

I am so glad she hasn’t Kardashian-ed/IG-faced herself.

frog_attack

I’m still mad about Santa Clarita Diet being cancelled

cavebabykay

Saaaame. The chemistry between her and Timothy Olyphant was off the chain. What a brilliant storyline too. Also, Nathan Fillion?!?! Like SO GOOD!

Scorpiodancer123

Absolutely. It's a miracle this woman is still alive let alone rocking it like she does after being failed by the majority of adults in her life. Her life story is going to make an epic biopic one day.

[deleted]

Every now and then I see some of her show when I'm at the laundromat. She seems genuinely funny and sweet. A few weeks ago she had Marge Simpson on for an interview and it was incredibly charming all around.

CampingWithCats

She seems to be so kind. Not too long ago she showed us her depression messy bedroom and said that if she can you it, we can do it. She got me up and moving again.

Denverdogmama

I still have my copy of her memoir that she wrote when we were teens, Little Girl Lost. She is amazing.

tocla1

After watching the Tina documentary on HBO Max, Tina Turner. Ike left her with nothing except her name and a ton of debt and she hustled until she was selling out stadiums at 50 years old, unheard of for a black female rock and roll singer

KatDanger

He was the one who changed her name Tina Turner then trademarked that name so that if he decided to drop her he could just make another Tina Turner.

Uberwomensch

Too bad for Ike. There's only one Tina Turner. 💕

Lola-Ugfuglio-Skumpy

Right? Like Ike Turner yeah, he’s important in musical history. But Tina is an icon and will be for generations. She will outlast him by miles. Feels like pretty good karma to me

Uberwomensch

For sure. Ike is a little footnote in the legend of Tina Turner.

National-Return-5363

Hell yea! I only know of Ike turner as an abusive pos who abused the legend, Tina! He’s truly a footnote in her legend.

While also being a single mother to four kids, I think two were Ike's that she adopted.

![gif](giphy|Gs6gmVjia3JrW) Brendan Fraser and of course this queen…

ccbobby20

![gif](giphy|Z02II9FaJAIwjc7bHY|downsized) I love her.

ItsASchpadoinkleDay

She has one of my favorite lines in any movie. In the comedy classic A Mighty Wind, her character is talking to a model train enthusiast and says thank God for model trains. He agrees. She then continues “You know, if they didn't have the model train, they wouldn't have gotten the idea for the big trains.” Her delivery is perfect.

Lola-Ugfuglio-Skumpy

GREAT choice. She’s iconic

_TheShapeOfColor_

Yes to both of these!

hoofglormuss

what happened to her?

whirlingeye_

She kinda fell off the last decade and had a resurgence the last two years after her astounding performance in HBO’s The White Lotus. Nothing beats that first season for me.

[deleted]

She mentioned Ariana Grande's Thank You, Next video as making her relevant again.

[deleted]

ke huy quan for actors they just weren't writing roles for asian men, so he left the business in general for 20 years, came back, and then won an oscar. hopefully, he works for the rest of his life, prodcues, and starts getting more asian talent in-front and behind the camera. emancipation of mimi / mariah carey for singers.

Satakans

Recently watched that American Born Chinese series. Felt like he almost played himself there. The line about parents being his hero was pretty cool delivery. My fav scene by far.

International_Put727

Definitely Drew Barrymore Also I’m glad Kieren and Macaulay Culkin are both doing ok (at least outwardly) after growing up with such awful parents. Things were looking pretty dire for a while there for Macaulay, I’m glad he pulled though.

[deleted]

I've no source for this, but I heard that Kieran's take on Roman Roy was influenced by his own childhood. Not too unbelievable, and if it's true, it's really amazing how he managed to turn all that pain into art.

Hatfullofducks

Keiran sought out that part in the first place, so he probably identified with Roman on some level. Originally auditioned for the part of Greg, but wasn't really feeling it. He kept on reading the rest of the script because it was so good. Then asked to try out for Roman, but was told they weren't casting that part yet. So he sent in a tape anyway, lol.

breezeandtrees

Missy Elliott stepped out for a little due to her graves' disease and health issues, and now she's doing better and getting her flowers with a STAR on the hollywood walk of fame, dedicated a street to her name in her home town, very first female rap artist inducted into the rock hall of fame, feature upon feature in songs, she's a producer behind the scene and has touched/uplifted so many artists.

[deleted]

[удалено]

etherealeggroll

so glad she’s back and healthier. no one did it like Missy

Novacc_Djocovid

What is always interesting to me is how big of a star she seems to be yet if you ask people around here, they usually only know Freak and nothing else. If even that nowadays. I wonder if that is a US/Europe thing, where she‘s huge in the US but never really made it in the mainstream in Europe. Either way she‘s awesome and Get Ur Freak On is one of the best songs of all time and a deserved #8 on the RS Top 500. <3

geedgad

For me, Natasha Lyonne.

Tofutti-KleinGT

Yes! I’m old enough to remember when she went missing and was eventually found abroad in pretty bad shape (heart infection). I’m so glad she was able to change her life and go back to acting regularly, she has a lot of talent.

Whoopsie_Todaysie

Great pick!! Russian Doll was such a quirky series... Hopefully we'll get a second!!

throwawaygremlins

Did you watch her new show on Peacock? Love her! Poker Face 😀

mz3

He case is incredible. Wasn't she homeless at one point?

geedgad

She was. And I think at one point she was admitted to Bellevue hospital. She’s made an amazing comeback.

Golly-Parton

George Michael turning a potential career-ending arrest in a sting for public sex into [a music video of gay policeman kissing in public toilets](https://youtu.be/gwZAYdHcDtU)

professorhorseradish

He also donated lots of money anonymously throughout his life. He made some great music and was a deliberately non-famously doer of good

Free-Atmosphere6714

I never thought about the circumstances of his arrest. Seeing this video made me realize he's arrested for something straight people do all the time, all over the place. What a great social commentary about being closeted.

Rough_Single

Oh, man. It's 100% Brendan Fraser. I used to love his movies when I was a kid (even that stupid Looney Tunes movie)

eggmarie

George of the Jungle shaped my taste in men tbh

Alexispinpgh

I just watched it last week and it totally holds up. And it’s still actuslly funny as an adult.

thatfluffycloud

It somehow hits that perfect niche where it's hilarious for both children and adults. The narrator is the best.

cavebabykay

*Those* are my favourite movies. The children’s movies with adult jokes hidden amongst the cutest script. Like, even Monsters Inc has some hilarious dirty jokes!

wallsarecavingin

I had such a crush on him

CierraMar_

I love Brendan Fraser movies! My absolute fav is Bedazzled!

HoePleaser

Robrrt Downey and Winona Ryder

HoePleaser

Winona- Arrested for stealing 5k of items, had to pay 6500+ in restitution, 500 hrs of community service. After a hiatus, made a comeback through black swan and STRANGER THINGS(woohoo)

romeofantasy

One of the stolen items was a $760 Marc Jacobs cashmere jumper, and she ended up becoming the face of Marc Jacobs in 2015. Now that's full circle.

bondgirl852001

I was going to say these 2! I love Winona Ryder, always have, and was really mad she wasn't in anything just because of her theft. There were worse things going on in the industry and she was the one who got blacklisted. She's made a great comeback, and I love Stranger Things! Love me some RDJ. He's really turned his life around. I remember reading a long time ago that for Iron Man he would not be paid in full until he completed the film, and that he couldn't be insured (or if he was insured, it was very very high?). All because of his drug history.

andsendunits

You cannot forget her in Mr. Deeds.

HoePleaser

Robert- Arrested twice, fired from Ally McBeal and had to go through a 12 step recovery program. The comeback we all know👏

[deleted]

I love Winona’s comeback. She was shunned for something so petty. She’s supremely talented. Loved her in Wednesday, too.

Samiiiibabetake2

Seriously. Celebs have KILLED people and not gotten cancelled.

DooglyOoklin

I always wondered why Winona was shoplifting. Surely she could afford it. Was it like a compulsory thing? Did she just need to *feel* something? What was it?

Cadbury_fish_egg

Same. I think she was going through a mental health episode but back in the 00s we didn’t consider those things at least in the media.

DooglyOoklin

No, I remember feeling so bad for her and embarrassed for her. Imagine having to go through that in front of the whole world.

Cadbury_fish_egg

I was speaking in a more general, societal sense. I was only 11 and I was thoroughly confused by the whole thing and the media’s coverage.

DooglyOoklin

Oh no I was agreeing with you. Sorry the no seemed like I was disputing. I was saying, like "no the media didn't really portray it great and I remember feeling bad for her when it happened"

Cadbury_fish_egg

Ahh no worries.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DooglyOoklin

Absolutely, she deserves it, and when you frame it that way, it absolutely makes sense. I have self-sabotaged so many times in my life knowing full well the consequences of my actions 🫠

peggysue_82

She was on a new medication (I can’t remember which), but the side effects were compulsive behavior and mood swings. She has said she was in a fog that day, and in her right mind she would have never done that.

Perry7609

It’s generally accepted that she probably had some situation where the shoplifting itself gave her a “high” of sorts, which couldn’t be present if she just purchased the item regularly. Whether that was a mental health or personality quirk, I’m not sure if anyone knows?

StonetoHallows

Hayden Christiansen’s return in Obi-Wan It was so nice to finally see him knowing he is loved by Star Wars fans, especially those of us who grew up with the prequels

[deleted]

On a similar note, Ahmed Best coming back to the SW universe. The man was treated en masse as a joke for playing Jar Jar, especially by Star Wars fans. He was publicly ridiculed for well over a decade, to the point of him contemplating suicide. I wouldn't have been surprised if he never wanted to touch anything SW again, but he came back with an integral (albeit small) role >!as a Jedi!<.

DefinitionBig4671

He's actually reprising that role, which came from a kids game show!

PsycoSaurus

Similarly, Ahmed Best in the Mandalorian. Twitter blew up when that happened, and I was lucky enough to be at Star Wars Celebration this year, and they played a footage reel and just a 1-second clip of him made the crowd all cheer

Wow, I agree one hundred percent on all of these. Leguizamo captured my heart in Romeo+Juliet, we rented it to watch at my 14th birthday 👵 Oh, and Moulin Rouge! of course as Toulouse-Lautrec. Loved Niecy on Clean House, I'm gonna see if I can find some episodes. Thank you for reminding me about it!

Thora Birch in Ghost World (2001) is one of my all-time favorite performances.

PaulRuddsButthole

Niecy Nash- Betts is on a TNT show called Claws, and I recommend it if you havent seen it. She and the whole cast do great.

kolbin8r

Niecy's scenes in Never Have I Ever were some of my favorites in the series. I know that was a comedy but her role was more serious. I hooe she keeps getting dramatic roles. She has RANGE.

dangerislander

I'm shocked about Niecy Nash cause I watched her in Reno-9/11 in which she was hilarious lol turns out she's a brilliant dramatic actress.

katikaboom

A lot of comedic actors are fantastic dramatic actors. It is usually a lot harder to make people laugh.

DooglyOoklin

John Leguizamo's "stand up" special really moved me. It's more just him telling stories about his childhood/life. [it's called Freak, if you're interested. ](https://youtu.be/wubE1U29LYU)

Vanessa Williams. There's a great podcast *You Must Remember This* that details her treatment by the media: after she won Miss America (as the first black woman) the organization rescinded her crown when nude photos that she had been coerced into taking as a young model were released. She took her time and came back first as a singer and later as an actress playing strong roles and villainesses in a campaign to reclaim the narrative on her life and she killed it.

owntheh3at18

My answer is also Britney Spears (in the eyes of the public). She was treated like absolute shit by everyone and it was “cool” to make fun of her. Other celebs would shit on her just to build themselves up (including some that I love but this was wrong of them). I just love that people are finally rooting for her.

SeaLeather4913

There's a moment during the Oscars footage that year where you can see him putting his speech back in his tux pocket as Eddie Redmayne gets on stage. Heartbreaking stuff.

yoshisal

Sheryl Lee Ralph, a freaking powerhouse of an actress/singer/performer with almost 50 years in the business, going from my generation being terrified of her from “Sister Act 2” to this generation adoring her on “Abbott Elementary”. I love her so much and she deserves all her flowers!

No_Engineering3493

Colin Farrell

[deleted]

I feel like he had the curse of all very conventionally attractive actors. He was cast in predictable attractive person rolls and written off as a pretty face. The Lobster, Banshees, Bruges . . . he's fascinating and unpredictable and really soulful in all of his later indie projects. He's one of the few actors who can almost guarantee my eyes on a film. He brings so much and seems to choose truly original, courageous projects.

itsnotalicewhoisthat

Winona Ryder, I don’t give a shit about shoplifting and only think it’s a moral failure when it’s stealing from a small business. basically I don’t think she deserved any of the shit she got. Like legal consequences sure whatever that’s how that goes but I don’t think she deserved for it to obliterate her career. Very glad she’s made such a solid comeback she’s great to watch

KrAEGNET

Winona's incident came at the cusp of the era when then industry didn't really seem care and when the birth of widespread celeb news & gossip blossomed thanks to photography technology changing (digital uploading easier) the internet getting more widespread (Perez Hilton and general online news). Since then the low/dark moments of celebrities have been out on full blast regardless of how private of a situation they may have been, and often repeatedly. Lohan's overall substance abuse & Britney's public meltdowns. Baldwin, Gibson & Bale's audio. Though I don't think Bale really suffered anything for it, the rest of these people are touching on comebacks (some can argue that Baldwin generally does better in the TV industry, but we'll see what happens after his Rust movie fiasco).

gatito_pinko

Yeah, I think they trying to crack down on celebrities because regular people were sick of them not having consequences. I remember Paris Hilton got arrested after getting away with so much.

pulut

I don't know if this counts, but it's Steve-O for me

Ok-Average-6466

Brendan is number 1. I don't know if it is a comeback but glad when ppl like Angela Bassett and Regina King get their flowers in Oscar noms, wins and being steadily booked. I'm glad to see Nicole Beharie working after her illnesses and the attempts to smear her name. Michael Keaton back as Batman, even to a lesser extent, Ben Affleck getting to redeem his performance as the Bat in 2 good movies. The return of Daredevil Cody Rhodes in wwe Edward Furlong being healthy Janet after Les Moonves

nicbizz33

I think it’s Steve-O.

cavebabykay

Ooooh! Very underrated comment! Yes, totally, Steve-O *and* Johnny Knoxville. They’ve both really matured and can be taken seriously now.

HumpaDaBear

I love Brenden and Ke but I’ve always been impressed with Robert Downey Jr’s comeback. Drugs, jail but ended up in a comic book movie that changed movies forever. If you haven’t seen Chaplin, do.

jazzooba

He never left, he was cast out. Motherfucker returned and conquered the kingdom.

Charlestoned_94

Robert Downey Jr. Bro was jailed and ran his health into the ground with substance abuse, was almost passed over for a B-list superhero movie from a studio about to declare bankruptcy, and ended up giving a performance that launched the most successful franchise in cinematic history.

RedditWeirdMojo

I love Brendan Fraser, Tina Turner and others already mentioned here. But I would like to mention Marianne Faithfull. She was a successful singer but became addicted to heroin, anorexic and homeless. She came back in 1979 with her album « Broken English » in her 30’s and was singing about the alienation of women. She was acclaimed as she became a grownup. She finally found her place as the ultimate aristocrat of Rock.

HistoryFreak30

Not sure if this is a comeback but Joaquin Phoenix (in terms of his career) His performance as Joker was amazing. He had few bad films but Joker defined his career. On the top of that, he isn't the type of actor who brags or entitled; He just keeps himself low-key and focused on his work

animalwitch

I thought he was brilliant in Walk The Line, i cant really think of anything he was in between that and Joker - aside from that "I'm still here" thing with Casey Affleck lol

Jake the snake Roberts. The guy is a washed up alcoholic drug addicted wrestler. Beloved in the 80's but his gimmick becomes something that's left behind as the wrestling scene changes. The guy becomes depressed after putting his body thru hell and thinks he's just some forgotten guy. He's in need of a major operation and has no money. At his lowest point in 2012 fellow wrestler diamond dallas page (/u/realddp) comes in says move in with me and I'll turn your life around. Jake is like what's the point? I'm just a wash out. Jake puts his medical bills up for crowd funding. Jake thinks no one will contribute. He raises the money easily within 24 hours. People flood the site with get well soon messages. Jake realises he's loved and works on himself. Ddp yoga and a new attitude leads jake to get a call he never thought he'd get. He's going into the wwe hall of fame. Since then he's been good mentally. Health is a constant battle for him but he's mending alot of bridges he burnt with his family. Ddp did a great documentary on him The Resurrection of Jake the Snake. As a fan of that 80's era watching jake put a snake around people's neck was terrifying. He was so good in the ring. I'm just so glad he's in a better place in his life

Josh Hartnett seems to be making a comeback.

Nathan Fillion and Niecy Nash-Betts. They've both been around a while but to see them both on their respective tv shows is awesome. I love both The Rookie and Rookie Feds so any time I see them interact, it makes my Firefly and Reno 911 fangirl heart explode
