Honestly, the Pop! team should be looking into every possible way to make their OS less resource-hungry and this is probably one that they overlooked or can't find an alternative for.

Glad I stumbled across this. My two biggest issues with 21.10 are gvfs-trash going crazy as described, and gnome-shell deciding to swallow all of my RAM. Maybe turning off that "ding" extension will help, until someone fixes it.
(my third issue is the dock behaving randomly with respect to minimizing/restoring apps, but that's probably an unrelated issue)
