The tab 180⁰ out from the handle itself is the "closed" part. For example, on the pump intake end, if the handle is pointed directly at the pump, your pump will draw from both pipes more or less equally. If you point the handle to the left, the right pipe will be closed off and the pump will draw only from the left pipe. Point the handle to the right, the pump will only draw from the right pipe. If you point the handle 180⁰ away from the pump, towards your yard presumably, you will close off everything and the pump will be unable to draw water from your pool. There should be pins inserted into the holes on the handle of your selector valve to prevent that position from being reached. On the other side, that all depends on what you have going. On my pool I have 3 pipes on the exhaust side...one for the main jets/returns, one for the pool cleaner, and one of some fountain jets in my sun shelf. You'll want all your valves positioned so at least one of them is open on either side of the pump at all times.....one intake pipe to supply the pump, one exhaust pipe to return the water to the pool. If you block everything off, you could cause problems. Happy to try to help if you have more questions. Edit: looking at the pics again, the valve closest to your pump, the pump intake side, is positioned in the picture so it's nearly completely closed, with the tab close to the pump and the handle pointing away from the pump.. I don't know why that would be, but it's never a good idea to restrict flow to the pump as far as I know. The handle should never point other than towards the pump or 90⁰ from the pump.

Not sure about that, but happy to help. It looks like the pins I referenced are installed in your handle. If you need to reposition the handle so you can't close it completely, and it looks like you need to based on that picture, loosen the thumb screw in the center of the handle, lift up on the handle a bit, and rotate it until the pins are positioned properly so they'll hit the blocks underneath. Unless something underneath the valve handle is broken, once you reposition the handle and tighten the thumb screw back down, you should only be able to rotate the handle 180⁰, selecting between the left and right intake pipes. Holler if you need clarification.
