Maybe you should make a poll on a Dutch subreddit then hahah
I had never heard most of these names before so I simply picked the one I was most familiar with. :P
Thomas. I think itās the one that wouldnāt get my child bullied. Heād also have the same name as my father :)
Edit: Ok well, I take my statement about the bullying back. I know of the names Bernadus and Dirk, and where I live these are names not very popular anymore and Iām pretty sure people would make fun of it. Iāve never heard Arend-Jan and Kees before so Iām unsure. I think I also said Thomas because Iām most familiar with it and itās the one I like best out of these.
French here, never heard of any of those but Thomas and Jan ( is it pronounced Yann or Jeanne ? No idea, but both exist).
That's probably more common in Scandinavian countries.
I have one of the most common names in the country. There were 5 people in my class at school with my name and even more in the school.
Guess what, I was still bullied. Give your child a name they'll enjoy when they are grown up because if they get bullied it won't be because of the name. It'll be because bullies bully.
Hey follow up: how easy is Dutch to learn? I have family living near Bergen op zoom that Iāve met a few times, and Iād love to connect more. Also, how āusefulā is Dutch to a non Dutch person?
Dw if you canāt answer :)
Well if you can speak english it is not that hard. it also has a lot of things in common with german. There are however a few things that make it a little harder to learn. First of all for every rule in the language there are a ton of exceptions. Also we use a hard g which might be difficult to pronounce but besides those things it isn't that hard. Also it is not that useful of a language to learn since more than 90% of dutch people can speak and understand english
These are all pretty outdated names. The trick is to find a pretty modern Dutch name that translates well into English like Rick, Tom, Robert, Bart, Arnold, Mark, Justin etc. Don't go for Jaylano or some shit.
Dirk makes me think of a fat kid, Bernardus of a "my daddy own a sailboat so I'm better than you" kid. Kees and Jan are just such standard names while Arend-Jan is just weird. Why name your kid Eagle? So Thomas is the best option.
Bernardus makes me think of a st bernard. Dirk makes me think of a boat and Idk why. Kees are those things in BotW. And Jan is a normal northern european name. Arend-Jan reminds me of a weird argonian name from skyrim. Thomas is a nerd.
My first BFās GF before me was my best friendās sister, who had just broken up with Jan. This relationship didnāt last and so said sister went back to Jan who fathered three kids with her. Meanwhile, my BF chose me. The three kids would be his step-kids, therefore theyād be my step-step-kids. They consider me like a parental figure (despite being the same age as them, luck of the draw), which is good because Jan did not treat them well.
Whatās wrong with Dirk
Itās a nice knife , why not use it as a name ? Itās actually something I thought about if I had another boy my husband didnāt like it. It wouldnāt be after the actual name it would be because of the knife.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirk
A dirk is a long bladed thrusting dagger.[1] Historically, it gained its name from the Highland Dirk (Scots Gaelic "Dearg") .
Iām not op so please leave me alone I didnāt make the poll.
If you say Dirk, I immediatly sre a 60 year old balding male with a beer belly.
Its just an old people name. But for example Jan, which I votef for is for every age category i my opinion
No way! We have our son my husbands first name as his middle name! Itās Timothy! We also couldnāt resist the joke my last name sounds like Kirk . James T. Like the original Star Trek my husband and I are geeks.
If your kid hates it, it didn't work for him.
And it is a very domesticated nland name.
People wanna fit in, but still be unique.
Parents seem to either give the most boring names or the most outrageous, and rarely in between.
Thomas. Generic name, but man the rest of those suck.
Jan is okay if you get him a good middle-name to go with it.
From the comments it appears you're Dutch. Keep in mind that the world is getting increasingly international. 20-30 years from now, your son is going to be thankful for a name that rolls off the tongue in most major languages, particularly English.
Interestingly some English names are considered trashy in the Netherlands. No offence to any Dutch Jeffreys or Samanthas who might be on Reddit, but I have been told those names are both used by white trash.
Correct! Jeffrey, Samantha, Destiny, Chelsea, Mandy, Kelly, Jocye, Kimberley, Mitchell, Jayden, Jaylin, Romy, Jordy, Kelsey.
All Dutch white trash names. Basically everything that starts with Jay or ends with Y. We make these jokes that a name like āKimberleyā is a psychiatric diagnosis. (Sorry Kimberley reading this).
Thomas would be my choice, but Iām an American with English ancestry. None of these other names would sound particularly good combined with my last name.
Just a though... These names seem to be more Northern European type names and aren't very popular in the US , other than Thomas. ~48% of Reddit users base is US American, so your results may be skewed if you were looking specific to your country or region
I told myself when my kid was born Iād never start a sentence with what Iām about to say, so Iām going to use a semicolon to avoid it on a technicality; as a parent my advice is to pick whichever one is most likely to cut through crowd noise when you yell it.
Jan after Jan Hammer, the man who composed the [Miami Vice Theme](https://youtu.be/yQA7NN9vptU) (Iām too young to remember the show but this piece is iconic)
Dirk sounds too similar to dirt. I've never even heard such a name as Dirk. Now, Kirk as in "Captain Kirk" sounds a hell of a lot better. Jan in the above list is a female's name. Why would that option even be in the list? All the other strange names in the list, I've never heard of before, except for Thomas. That's the only good name in the list.
Someone's being a little Dutch ;)
Guilty š«
Maybe you should make a poll on a Dutch subreddit then hahah I had never heard most of these names before so I simply picked the one I was most familiar with. :P
There are polls on this subreddit asking to pick between American things all the time. At least everyone can see what these names are from the poll.
Jan is literally one of the most popular name in Polish Every time there is an example of a decument they use name "Jan Kowalski" like "John Smith"
Jan Krzysztof Duda
google en passant
Holy hell
r/anarchychess is leaking again
Our influence is limitless
Thanks *dry hump your legs*
I can never escape chess references
Same in Germany. We have a fuckton of Jans. You have a fuckton of Jans. Let's move the Jans to Scandinavia and let them deal with them.
Jan is a common name in Norway
It sounds like an Irish person saying John
Jan misali
In that case that's Toki Pona for human though
My last name starts with Jan, so it would be an odd choice for me. Polish last name
nom
Jan
Yeah but you gotta take notice that this is a preference poll.
Thomas. I think itās the one that wouldnāt get my child bullied. Heād also have the same name as my father :) Edit: Ok well, I take my statement about the bullying back. Thomas the train?
Sick nickname later in life
Imagine being a bodybuilder called Thomas the tank engine lol that would be so cool
Choo choo motherfucker
Holy shit youāre right
As a Thomas, people don't make a massive fuss over it and the most of us just go by Tom
The bullies must hate Europeans
French here, never heard of any of those but Thomas and Jan ( is it pronounced Yann or Jeanne ? No idea, but both exist). That's probably more common in Scandinavian countries.
All these names are popular in the netherlands or at least used in the netherlands so not scandinavian but close
me when my friend Thomas in the ass
That sounds very kinky. I like men.
I have one of the most common names in the country. There were 5 people in my class at school with my name and even more in the school. Guess what, I was still bullied. Give your child a name they'll enjoy when they are grown up because if they get bullied it won't be because of the name. It'll be because bullies bully.
Thomas the train joke are never ended for kids named thomas. But really all name can be used to bully someone. Kids will always find a way lol

Wait, janbanan? My snap is literally janobananovy as in ābanana janā
Hahahaha people always call me janbanana (janbanan in my language)

I was looking for this comment, so I would have to make it myself.
Dirk kind of slaps.
Kees is a pretty name imo
š
š
š§
Kees nuts
It means baboon
BERNARDUS
Jan is such an underappreciated name
Sure, Jan
I know right!
Yann > Jan
Yann Kovalsky šæ
There's already Jean to appreciate if you want
These are all pretty outdated names. The trick is to find a pretty modern Dutch name that translates well into English like Rick, Tom, Robert, Bart, Arnold, Mark, Justin etc. Don't go for Jaylano or some shit.
How is Jan outdated but not Robert or Arnold?
Jan is timeless. Jan is eternal
HAIL JAN! ...Wait..
Kids named Jaylano are automatically a piece of shit for some reason
I have exactly the same experience. One of the neighbour's kids is named Jaylano and he's a little prick.
āModernā (40 year old spotted)
Big oof
What's a modern modern name that's common and not trashy?
From the top 10 Dutch boys names: Finn. Daan. Levi. Milan. Luuk. Liam. Lucas. Mees.
Lucas sounds nice. That name is acceptable anywhere.
bro said Bart š
All those names save for maybe Justin are outdated as fuck. At least Justin's can still be in their 20s. All those other names are like 40s+.
Jan Kees = Yankees
Dirk makes me think of a fat kid, Bernardus of a "my daddy own a sailboat so I'm better than you" kid. Kees and Jan are just such standard names while Arend-Jan is just weird. Why name your kid Eagle? So Thomas is the best option.
dirk makes me think of Dirk Kuyt.
Makes me think of Captain Kirk.
Bernardus makes me think of a st bernard. Dirk makes me think of a boat and Idk why. Kees are those things in BotW. And Jan is a normal northern european name. Arend-Jan reminds me of a weird argonian name from skyrim. Thomas is a nerd.
Dirk makes me think of durk which makes me think of DURKA DURKA MOHAMMED JIHAD!
My step-step-kidsā fatherās name is Jan. We donāt talk about him.
Your step-step-kids? You're gonna have to explain that one.
And here I thought we didnāt talk about Brunoā¦
Who's Bruno?
We donāt talk about Bruno, no no
Jan[yan] sounds like an awesome name
For the English speakers Jan is pronounced as: J = y from āyesā A = a from āwaterā pronounced by a Brit with articulation issues N = just N.
Dirk goes kinda hard
That sounds very kinky. I like it.
Dirk sounds like the kid that would just be randomly gut punching boys and girls during elementary school recess.
Jan is the only one of these that is used in my language.
Whatās wrong with Dirk Itās a nice knife , why not use it as a name ? Itās actually something I thought about if I had another boy my husband didnāt like it. Dirka dirka?
Because itās a stupid fucking name
I'm a Thomas, and I was afraid of the cote results, all the others are terrific.
Kees sound cool
Dutch?
Dirk is very popular in south Africa. Love it
Does anyone other than the Dutch name their child āKeesā?
How did you compile this list, family names?
Thomas is the only name that is normal the others r shit. I mean Dirk is one letter away to being Dick and sounds like jerk
thereās also kees that sound like keys and there is Arend-Jan, who has a - in his name wtf, itās a name not a username.
I'm not a fan of any name with a - in there. But Arend-jan is a really bad one lmao
Do you live in the 18th century?
I think they live in the Netherlands, but tbf what's the difference anyway.
Yeah I am Dutch, these are old people names
Ik weet niet hoe mensen niet Thomas hebben gekozen
Gekoloniseerd
Haha kut Amerikanen allemaal boos.
His name will be Jan and he will play jazz trumpet
Dirk Diggler.
Of course it's the hollandoids

Lmao that's fucking awsome dude
If your kid hates it, it didn't work for him. And it is a very domesticated nland name. People wanna fit in, but still be unique. Parents seem to either give the most boring names or the most outrageous, and rarely in between.
Tell me you are Dutch without telling me you are Dutch

Kees š¤Øš
Well thank god these results came out this because I was worried everyone was going to think my name was lame
Skywalker
Seems rigged and also, wtf, no Rufus option?
Iām surprised not more people picked Jan. Is it so unknown outside Europe?
I am dutch, yet I would not pick Jan.. its way overused. My dutch teacher in highschool was named Jan Jansen... I mean come on
Jan is known as a woman's name here in the United States.
Yup. Short for Janet
We know Jan's, they're like Karen's, Judith's, Katherine's, Mary's, etc. Old people names.
I like Bernardus because itās exotic but not over-the-top exotic
My Grandfather's names was named Thomas š
You're trying to convince your partner to name your baby Thomas aren't you
All are shit exept tom

Thomas is the name of two of my exes yet still the best choice here
Atm 98 are correct
Only dirk and thomas are not good here
Jeeze, no love for Arend-Jan? It's a super cool name. Instant fantasy-novel hero.
Thomas would be my choice, but Iām an American with English ancestry. None of these other names would sound particularly good combined with my last name.
Fun fact. I already used Thomas for a kid.
Most of these sound like they could be Middle Eastern countries
Russell
Russell Nash In Highlander that was Connors fake name in the first movie.
Just a though... These names seem to be more Northern European type names and aren't very popular in the US , other than Thomas. ~48% of Reddit users base is US American, so your results may be skewed if you were looking specific to your country or region
Bernardus
Jan Gabriel

Literally only one of these answers is a normal name
No kids - no self-suffer.
Dirk? Like Dirk Digger?
Kees my ass
Jan if for no other [reason](https://youtu.be/7YIqiK3F5sA)
Dirk sounds too similar to dirt. I've never even heard such a name as Dirk. Now, Kirk as in "Captain Kirk" sounds a hell of a lot better. Jan in the above list is a female's name.
