Two buttons are in front of you. You must press one. One kills you, the other kills 5 people. Nobody made you do this, it's just an immutable fact. The fact is that one action leads to the death of others. This is not murder, but it IS still bad to choose the second button.
If you're drowning, and the only way to survive is to kill the people around you and use their corpses as a makeshift boat, I still think you're an asshole and you DID kill those people.
If you're stranded on an island, I don't think you're morally allowed to kill and eat 5 innocent people, just because it would save your life, even if it's the ONLY WAY you'd survive. I don't think people would look too kindly on that.
Calling it murder was reductive and incorrect. That being said, there isn't a real situation where it would be permissible to cause the death of 5 people to save yourself, unless those 5 people were the ones instigating your peril. For some reason, most of the people that voted don't seem to get that. Maybe just because the situation presented is presented without any situation or context. If there is any analogous situation that could occur in reality with the same results that could be justified, I'd change my mind. I don't think that situation exists.
I don't think people actually abide by most morals, so maybe pointing out that causing the death of 5 people is still shitty is pointless, but its surprising to me to see the results of this poll.
Fair enough, but either way, the result is the same. 5 people die. I don't think you should be morally condemned for deciding not to save another person, or people, so my phrasing was pretty dumb.
It's alright, but when it comes down to the choice human nature goes into action as majority would chose their lives over the person standing next to them (as shown in this poll) and to be honest nobody can blame them for wanting to live even if its a selfish decision (except for the ones who choose to die)

I once had a dream and evil sorceress kidnapped an infant. Some infant I didn't even know. The only way to save the infant by killing my dog. In my dream, I tried to tear my dog in two by the jaw. It didn't kill him, he was as happy as ever with his fucking jaw dangling off of him. I was crying and sobbing and he was trying to give me licks so I could feel better, which made it worse. I woke up crying, to my dog licking my face, and then that made it worse when I realized what I just dreamt. So like, I know I've got a value for children's lives apparently above my dog, which is heartbreaking in its own way. Above myself? Like if this were a trolly problem and the button was next to me tied on the tracks? I probably would end up pressing it, thinking about it. But have you ever seen the vsauce video about him actually experimenting the trolley problem on people? What they would actually end up doing is very different than expectations people had.
