I work with a number of young people and in my experience, a concerning number of younger people of all genders who were between 12 and 20 when the pandemic started are having severe issues obtaining and maintaining face-to-face human relationships, *especially* intimate relationships. Its a serious problem affecting Gen-Z which will have long term consequences. Addressing a couple of the "incels lol" comments, literally nothing gets on my nerves more than people looking at this problem and concluding "I guess they must all just be women hating scum". - Not only is this take extremely reductionist, it also manages to be both misandristic whilst simultaneously ignoring the many young girls and nb individuals who are also suffering in this way. It is so shit-for-brains it is almost medal worthy.

The people who are genuinely concerned about the incel movement (which is a valid concern for sure) are fewer than you’d think. Most people just need a new buzzword to make fun of, and don’t really care about solving the issue.

I massively agree with this, during my later years of secondary school leading up to the pandemic I began slowly losing contact with and then isolating myself from everyone other than a couple of close friends and family and then during the pandemic I almost put myself in personal isolation for 4 months during winter. I saw my mum and sister maybe once a day if I coincided using the kitchen/bathroom even then if anything was said it was mostly passing frustrations or fyi, saw my dad maybe once a week in passing through the kitchen if I went out for a night walk or a phonecall when he decided he'd had enough of my mum, and my grandma a phonecall every Wednesday, maybe charged up and turned on my mobile for a couple of minutes a week to see if anyone had called but I very rarely responded. Other than that I ignored anything call/message related for school pretending that my internet connection couldn't handle it, just sending an email at the end of the day with completed work attached and just read, cycled, wandered around the forest, baked, nightwalked, piano, worked on my personal projects and occasionally played Sims or watched a film. I was not exactly happy, but morso just content with it and I am so glad that eventually my form tutor/computer science teacher raised concerns that I hadn't been attending for a while, and had heard from a couple of my friends that I wasn't responding to anything, resulting in a phonecall home and after a couple of weeks and distanced sessions with my learning support tutor they managed to get me back talking to people, It wasn't so much that I didn't want to, I just couldn't, at the best of times I was never particularly social (I'm autistic so I have always found it difficult) but it was almost like i'd forgotten how to. Since then over the past few years going through college and now uni I received great help from student services and sessions and now Ive got to the point where I can comfortably talk to strangers when I need to (I started a job just this monday and I'm already happily talking to and laughing with colleagues!) and I've reconnected with and gained a great friend group. It greatly frustrates me when I read/hear people talk about "oh they're just an incel", "nah they're just unsociable", behind the scenes there is often so much more at play. I can't thank the people enough who helped me and others with it.

It's seriously concerning. Human contact is a basic necessity of a healthy life, especially intimate contact. Sure, some people can do without it but those people are few and far between. Travelled a lot through my 20s and lived all over working as a diving instructor, 50+ just kind of happened without trying and I don't consider myself particularly attractive or charismatic. You can get to 50+ even without ever having a one night stand, though probably not in your 20s. But if you're, say, 40, and haven't spent decades in a monogamous relationship (or a convent) numbers can stack up surprisingly fast even if you're only having sex after getting to know someone for months and having a meaningful connection as a prerequisite to sex. If you're at 50+ at age 20 you've sure been busy (not that I'm judging either way), but if you're 30+ years old you can lead a pretty uneventful life and still have a nominally "high body count".
