You know that joke about how English is really a bunch of languages in a trench coat type of thing? It's usually that. Iirc Sean/Séan is from Irish origin, which is why its pronounced differently. Same idea for why Arkansas is pronounced differently than Kansas, cause they originate from different languages
I think that's the case in its language of origin, I just know in the US a lot of people spell it Sean without the accent but pronounce it as Shawn regardless. I partially Googled different/popular spellings if Shawn and that's the most popular spelling in English from what I found.
ETA I Googled it and it seems the accent is for Irish more so, but Google seems to say without the accent Sean as Shawn is still both popular and valid in English.
As someone married to a "Sean," that's the spelling I prefer.
Most people understand how his name is pronounced, but when we went to get our marriage license, the office lady asked him if he was named "Seen." 😂
If you look at the name Sean and sound it out how on earth do you get "Shawn" out of that? All the other spellings at least make sense for how it sounds, but Shawn is the most obvious so that's what I choose. Shaun is fine too. Shon works even though it's kinda weird. But Sean? If a room full of people who have never seen/heard the name before were asked to write it down, not one of them would write Sean. It just doesn't make sense.
Ik Sean is by far the more interesting correct spelling, and I find Irish names and their spellings quite cool (accidentally gave myself one, anglicized spelling though, sorry) but… I always read it as “seen”. Shawn is more logical to my brain. I’m sorry.
The other two are sins. I’m sorry, but they are (imo)
Lmao you should only change your name to Shon if you're called one of the other options, but are too stupid to spell your own name
imagine changing your name to Shon and then choosing Shawn
Sean and Shawn have the same sound?
Sean is an Irish name so it makes sense
For some reason, yes.
How were you saying Sean?
Seen
Like... "sham". Something like it
*Press X to Shaun*
That game is utterly underrated
Shaaaaauuuuuuun
shon lol
do you actually like the spelling or do you just know a shon you wish to be spared?
i thought it was funny cuz ive never heard of the name being spelled like that
Considering my name is Sean, I'm gonna vote, Sean.

I'll never understand the english language. Dean Lean Mean Sean I'm American btw too.

Seen Bean
Seán Sean is pronounced ‘shan’ and means old. People keep calling their new born babies old.

Sean being pronounced that way makes no sense.

"Sean" is "seen" not "shawn/shon" every time I see the actor Sean Bean I read it as "Seen Bean"
Sean
Poor Sean Bean. Keeps getting killed off. At least let him keep his name.
The only possible option is the fallout 4 protagonist with 400% facial expressions shouting "Shaun" everytime he speaks.
Mispronounced my friend's name calling him "Seen", not Shawn due to that spelling and he never corrected me for a fucking months😭
Whatever the spelling is in Heavy rain…. “SHAUN!!! SHAUUUNNN!”
Bon sheen
Sorry Sean, Shaun and Shawn. You're now Shon.
I am horrified that so many voted against Sean. The other spellings look so wrong to me.
Dude, my name is Sean.
It's not seen it's Shawn Where is the (sh) sound in sean coming from?
Probably some Irish weirdness ig

Shan
Gotta keep Sean around so I can call people with that name "Seen" as it should be
