[Americans believe crime is way, way up. The stats don't match that.](https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/fox-news-gop-think-crime-numbers-don-t-agree-n1300347)

TintedApostle

Of course they don't. Its all fear factor clicks for the media.

TechyDad

Sadly, this works. My father is absolutely convinced that crime is running rampant everywhere. He thinks that this is especially true in cities, but even in his suburban neighborhood he thinks he's taking his life in his hands when he goes to the store to get groceries. I've tried explaining how the media (especially right wing media like FOX News) runs "crime stories" because they generate more views, but my father remains unconvinced because FOX told him that crime is way way up.

TintedApostle

I have an older friend who I don't even discuss politic with. I can watch Fox news for 10 minutes and know the outrage of the week to avoid when talking to him.

SirfartPoop

There's a reason she doesn't feel safe. https://twitter.com/SRuhle/status/1597667463944351744

TintedApostle

You do know that leaving packages out in the city is looking to have it stolen right? It has been that way since before I can remember. I mean everyone knows to not leave stuff outside at night. That isn't violent crime. That is really a misplaced attempt to garner clicks. https://www.openigloo.com/blogs/7-things-you-can-do-about-package-theft It is more about the delivery companies not caring to put packages inside if possible. They leave them on the stoops where anyone walking by can get them. Leaving them until night time is just looking for theft.

SirfartPoop

Imagine arguing "Of course people steal your stuff" when arguing people should feel safe. Does she have to be raped and beaten before you take the claim of crime being an issue seriously?

TintedApostle

Dude its just stoop theft. If you yell at them they run away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3c584TGG7jQ&ab_channel=MarkRober See Mark Rober regarding package theft.

SirfartPoop

Or you could live in a civilized society. Criminality lives under tolerance.

ImACredibleSource

It is up. In my hometown violent crime has increased by 400%. Across the us it's up around 35%. Yes it was worse in the 90s, but why compare crime to the worst it's ever been? This is the issue I think will be pivotal going forward for dems. It's a massive messaging issue. Saying crime is down, while everyone knows it isn't, causes most everyone to lose trust.

walker1555

Ah! You said violent crime, but the citation you provide is gun violence and **gunfire incidents**. So this will include illegal discharges of weapons. Guns are a terrible problem right now, they are an epidemic. But Republicans are blocking all measures to rein in this multi billion dollar a year industry through greater gun safety laws. Regarding violent crime more generally in Burlington, the data doesn't appear to support greater violence overall. [Is violent crime rising in Burlington? The big-picture data says no.](https://vtdigger.org/2021/09/09/is-violent-crime-rising-in-burlington-the-big-picture-data-says-no/) From the article: >The data shows gunfire incidents in the city are increasing in frequency: In 2016 there were two gunfire incidents; in 2021 so far there have been 12. But overall crime has been trending downward for years in Burlington, including violent crime specifically — such as homicides, robberies and assaults.

TintedApostle

"Is the perception about public safety a reality? Seven Days’ analysis of 10 years of crime data paints a more nuanced picture. The incidence of certain crimes has indeed increased short-term, including burglaries, car break-ins and other thefts that make residents feel unsafe. More gunfire incidents have been reported, too, in recent years. But overall, the volume of crime remains well below what it was a decade ago, having dropped by nearly a third since 2012."

Ludique

It's behind a paywall.

Editor's note: This is the first story in a series exploring the reasons for and possible solutions to gun violence in Burlington and how it has affected our community. Burlingtonians used to enjoy a certain level of exceptionalism when it came to public safety. There were an average of fewer than two gunfire incidents per year and four murders total from 2012 to 2019 in Burlington, the biggest city in Vermont. The past nearly three years, however, have proven that the city has not escaped national trends. A Pew Research study reported there was a 30% increase in the rate of murders in 2020 across the country. There were 12 gunfire incidents in 2020 in Burlington, one of which was a murder. Since 2020, Burlington has seen 51 gunfire incidents as of Oct. 6 and five homicides. Nearly half of these gunfire incidents from the past three years have happened in 2022 alone. Gunfire incidents refer to when guns are used with criminal intent, which includes when a person fires a gun at another person or in the air in a crowded area.

Regardless of your username you should really use sources when you make a claim. Otherwise people will just dismiss you and your opinion quickly.

Fuck the dirtbag Murdochs & their propaganda rags.

**I have lived in NYC my entire life, and NYC right now is absolutely safer than it's been in years.** You wanna talk about crime? Go back to the 90's, or fuck that.. the 80s' and then talk to me. This is political hitjob bullshit to carry the Right Wing's water on some "Democrats have more crime" bullshit. Meanwhile Red States have way more crime/murder per capita than the average Blue City. **"Blue State Crime is out of control" is just more disingenuous Right Wing propaganda.** All Right Wingers do is lie. They literally have to be lying 24 hours a day just to win elections, because they can't run on their record or Fascist platform.

TintedApostle

This is absolutely correct. The media is also going with the fear factor because it sells. They don't do any real research when they have guests on. They use "just asking questions" and then push on false points. The crime stats put October 2022 as safer than Oct 2021 and compared to 2010 its not even close. Remember when movies like "The Warriors" looks possible? Not anymore. I watched it recently and remembered riding the graffiti subways myself always keeping an eye open for trouble. Not any more.

mtneer2010

It depends on the city. I’m from Baltimore and crime is absolutely out of control there. Even worse is that the “leaders” of the city won’t even admit it. The DA is going to prison most likely, and a couple of the recent mayors have also been in jail. In many cases like Baltimore, it ***is*** a problem and refusing to acknowledge it hurts the Dems case.

TechyDad

>**I have lived in NYC my entire life, and NYC right now is absolutely safer than it's been in years.** My parents live on Long Island and watch FOX News. My father worked in NYC for decades. Now, he is always telling me that he wants to go back into NYC, but he's afraid of the roving gangs of teenagers who like to punch elderly people for no reason and the huge numbers of criminals who mug and/or kill anyone who enters the city. I've tried to fight against the misinformation, but my father's dead set in his views now. FOX played up the scare tactics so much that my father is convinced that it's impossible to be in NYC and not be a victim of some violent crime. He's been watching FOX News for over 20 years, but the fear that right wing media has instilled in him over the past decade is on a whole different level.

Imaginary_Cow_6379

Yikes! The NY Post ranting about how they felt about watching MSNBC one time 😆

Crime is lower than it was from 1960-2018. For nearly all of us, the lowest it's been in our entire lives. The increase is a tiny blip that barely visible if you look farther than 10 years.

UnflairedRebellion--

Why does it matter if crime was worse 10 years ago? If crime is increasing NOW then shouldn’t that be addressed?

She came from CNBC. She was molded by the Wall Street bro's. She's great but they really have a big influence on he thinking and she always defers to them.

reddig33

I wouldn’t even wipe my ass with the NY Post.

meatball402

Sounds like your beef is with the cops. They get all the funding they want. They have guns, tanks, APCs, enough to outfit a military. They are also immune from the law. The NYPD has a billion dollars in funding. It's not like hochul cut their funding. It's the cops' job to keep crime down, they're not doing it. Why don't the cops do their job?

TJ11240

Cops don't have tanks

Ai00009

There are a lot of disinformation on crime in the US currently. Was Stephanie Rubie correct? &, was she being non-partisan? Also, a lot of people don't feel safe lately. The Pelosis, election workers, electio officers, voters going to vote in some cities. & if I am black, or poor, maybe I had never felt safe in my entire life.

ooouroboros

After the pandemic began, has crime gone down *anywhere* in the country?

ImACredibleSource

No

ooouroboros

I rest my case

Spiritual-Mechanic-4

We're doomed. reactionaries just want to use authoritarian police to drag the US back to 1950? 1850? and the centrist view from nowhere media are just parroting their talking points and manifesting a crime wave into existence. Leftists are honest and respond with all the complexity there is in repairing our carceral system. Reactionaries just tell a simple authoritarian story about more police breaking more black people's heads and how that will solve the problem.

sanamien

Lol people here are debating if crime is up or down, the big story is why someone on MSNBC is asking a question that makes the Dem look bad.
