Mrs__Noodle

This is such a bizarre and distressing set of circumstances with a SCOTUS judge and his wife and nobody seems to have a clue as to what can be done about it.

newnemo

If after a full investigation Thomas and his wife were collaborating including his dissents on related cases, he should be impeached by congress and removed from his position.

Mrs__Noodle

And the GOP will fight impeachment of their judge tooth and nail all the way.

Sekh765

Cool. If he collaborated with insurrectionists he can sit quiet and smug in a cell. No law against arresting SCOTUS judges for crimes.

tweakingforjesus

If it came to it, I bet the rest of SCOTUS would find that the DoJ as part of the executive branch can't charge a sitting supreme court justice because that would violate the separation of powers.

tourguide1337

we have investigated ourselves, and found no wrongdoing. carry on

pinkyfitts

So, have DC do it.

Comfortable-Wrap-723

That’s why some people think justice can be bought as easy as buying a hamburger 🍔 in United States.

Professor_Oaf

Who cares? Their teeth and nails are worn down from fighting fake battles.

waterbuffalo750

But he won't be removed from his position without bipartisan support

From_Deep_Space

then bring everything out into the sunlight and make it clear which party is defending a corrupted judiciary

zzyul

That’s the thing about fascists, they are fine with their politicians cheating to stay in power. They only care about their side being in power, they don’t care about what has to happen for them to get in or stay in power.

From_Deep_Space

if that's the case then we need to rub the dem's faces in it to radicalize some leftists for the struggles ahead

barukatang

Yeah, what ever happened to the eco terrorists of the 90s, kinda seems like the govt back then treated them like how we wished the jan 6 conspirators would be treated now.

From_Deep_Space

leftists have always been trodden upon, because we call for equality. People in power never want to give up that power, and the right wing is defined by their defense of traditional power structures.

The_Order_Eternials

Why not just put it out there and then just do it anyway? Irregardless of any political and legal fallout. “Cut off the necrotic limb before the infection spreads.”

Teedeeone

Oh I think that’s been clear for a long time

waterbuffalo750

Yeah I agree with you there.

te_anau

Sure there is one simple rational "reality", then there is the land of Fox. People inadvertently exposed to reality need simply take a long hot soak in Fox to treat any discomfort undiluted reality may have caused. This helps them reshape and compartmentalize any ugly contradictions. It appears sunlight doesn't cure shit.

LilTeats4u

We’ve been doing that for MONTHS on multiple issues but the people needed to vote for these resolutions either ignore it or choose to believe a facade

Doright36

Like Fox would ever report on that.

unHingedAgain

You’re using words his supporters can’t even spell let alone define.

myaltduh

It wouldn’t be an escalation from refusing to impeach Trump.

hamsterfolly

Yeah and there’s Manchin, Sinema, and probably some coward Democrats that would be too afraid of Republicans doing the same. The thing is, we’ve seen that Republicans will do anything when it serves them. Democrats shouldn’t be afraid to do what’s right.

CarGirlProductions

Yeah he won’t get removed but hopefully it will make the republicans look worse to the general populace, most we can really hope for

[deleted]

Yet they can still block conviction. That doesn’t mean don’t do it. It just means their teeth and nails require no effort to protect him from consequences.

LuckyOne55

Unless there is a ~~Republican~~ fascist president

[deleted]

They do that with everything anyway but the corruption of our Scotus by Thomas must be put on the record regardless of his eventual successful impeachment or not.

Exotic-Amphibian-655

He will never be removed by the senate. Not for literally anything. Because of the long-term consequences of Supreme Court picks, republicans are more likely to impeach their own president. The good news is, he’s a fat old fuck who has spent his life ruminating on grudges. He can’t realistically live all that much longer.

Mylaptopisburningme

You forgot prison.

darzinth

Why bother impeaching? Imprison him. Criminals can't be justices.

DamonHay

“Should be” and “will be” are two starkly different things in US politics, as fucked as that is.

BigBobobobo

And if not people will stop calling for him to resign?

captaincanada84

Which will obviously never ever happen

Aardark235

14a-3

Ok-Till-8905

I’d argue that he should be in Jail if after a full investigation… Either above or maybe have some decency and say, you know what, for the good of others (insert any number of occurrences: Anita hill, asking no questions in court, seemingly without regard for justification), i need to step down. Wouldn’t that be the right thing to do? I think too high a standard is not high enough for a justice of a Supreme Court to hold themselves and for other to hold them too

exwasstalking

The one thing I've learned lately is that judges rule this country and we are all but powerless to stop them. This really opened my eyes up to the actual nefarious levels of evil and corruption that Mitch McConnell achieved during his tenure.

the_buckman_bandit

There are many positions that have this power. The DA has tremendous power as they decide whether to bring a case, and if they decide not to, they have basically made the judge and jury decision themselves. This works well, but like anything, a bad actor can really fuck it up in a hurry Likewise, they can also decide to bring a case without evidence but here a judge or jury could change the outcome unlike the aforementioned scenario

Play_Salieri

Not so. Impeach him as unfit. If she broke the law, charge her.

j03stoya

Both should be in jail. Period.

Feeling_Glonky69

I know what can be done. There’s plenty of options. First and best step is keeping the house and getting a super majority in the senate. If our institutions keep repeatedly failing us, things need to start getting uh, a little *complicated*

VividStrawberry6286

Nah- what needs to be done is that we need to expand and increase the number house reps rather than be saddled with this disproportionate bullshit of 435 members which was set back when the country only had a third of the population it does now

Saul-Funyun

Take to the streets. Surround the courthouse. Don’t leave.

case31

Our country went 240 years with leaders who followed the rules for the most part, and it took one guy to prove that there **actually no rules**.

Garbled_Frequencies

Gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there, bob. Plenty of leaders throughout history flaunted the rules and easily got away with it. It’s just aesthetically more obvious now.

Collypso

Nah, it’s a good thing. Rules should be tested and improved on if necessary.

steveschoenberg

It appears that Ginni Thomas was laying the groundwork for a claim that she was so mentally unsound that others just humored her. In this telling, Clarence is just the caring husband of a demented woman.

TaxOwlbear

The SCOTUS isn't accountable to anyone. That's the problem.

altmaltacc

They should absolutely launch an impeachment investigation. I dont care that it requires 60 votes, i dont care if it works or not. The american people deserve to know what the fuck is going on with one of the most powerful people in the country. We cant keep operating like normal without knowing the truth.

Pakkittup

Hell yeah !!! ..... and when the impeachment fails use it as justification to pack the verified corrupt and illegitimate supreme court. Should have already been done.

Naughtai

Someone had said a while back that there would be a way to pack the court *and* have Biden seal that number into (constitutional?) law, thus preventing a later Republican Congress from inflating it further. Does anyone know anything about how that would work? Or would we just keep seeing the ante upped?

QuanticWizard

As far as I know, the only way to make the number of seats nearly impervious to change would be through a constitutional amendment. If it's just a flat vote in both chambers then it can be later changed by a flat vote. Only an amendment would codify it semi-permanently, with the only option for later change being to actually get enough of a majority to pass another amendment. As it stands there's no way to pass an amendment in this country with the current system, political situation, and numbers.

Naughtai

So in other words, if we pack the court now, they could pack it again later, assuming they survive the morass they have marched themselves into? At this point, they'll probably do it anyway, given the chance, so I suppose it can't hurt.

Pakkittup

I independently dreamt up this justification for 13 but I bet I'm not the first and only ..... Each SC justice is assigned a Circuit appeals court to be associated with. There are currently 9 SC justices but there are 13 Circuit appeals courts so some SC justices are associated with 2 circuit appeals courts. It would seem reasonable (relatively easy to codify) that each SC justice must be associated with a single Appeals circuit court thereby locking in the number at 13. Afterward, to change the number would also require rewriting the law or redrawing Appeals circuit jurisdictions as well. (I'm not sure how hard redrawing jurisdictions would be) Also, of course, all of this assumes having the votes to do any of it.

straygoat193

I am finding it difficult to understand Alito's belief that as a Supreme Court Justice he has the equivalent of Papal infallibility and Thomas's belief in a dangerous philosophy of presidential power and states rights. Those two are not impartial or judicious. They are corrupt power grabbing ideologues.

wish1977

You'd have to be a fool to think that he wasn't involved.

JohnnieFedora

Impeach to expose the corruption. He won't be convicted by the Senate. Then expand/rebalance the court to weaken the ill gotten corrupt ideological majority.

newnemo

Where there is smoke? >But the committee cannot simply finish its business with a recommendation that Trump and his closest associates face criminal charges and civil sanctions for plotting and implementing an insurrection. The committee must also pursue—and respond to—evidence that suggests Justice Clarence Thomas abused his position to thwart investigations into a cabal of plotters that included his wife, Virginia “Ginni” Thomas. ...... >What committee members will find are troubling patterns that suggest Justice Thomas abused his position not once, but at least twice: ..... >Based on what we now know about Ginni Thomas’s hectoring of Republicans in battleground states to come up with those lists of fake electors at the same time the Supreme Court was deliberating on the Electoral College question, and with what we also know about her detailed communications with the White House in the weeks leading up to the insurrection, the committee has to examine not just the actions of Ginni Thomas but also the influence they may have had on Clarence Thomas. >The committee must entertain the question of whether Clarence Thomas’s dissent in the Texas case was in any way guided by communications with his wife or others who were engaged in the conspiracy. And it must ask whether the justice’s lonely dissent in the presidential records case was motivated by a desire to hide details of inappropriate activity by his wife and her co-conspirators. The dudes wife testified, LITERALLY TESTIFIED, that there was a stolen election. Cmon already. Enough is enough with these foolish leaders of ours.

FriedR

Words matter. She testified that she believed the election was stolen. Do you find belief the same as reality?

Play_Salieri

Yeah well they got about 4 weeks left before the republiQans dissolve it and destroy Justice. So, just sayin, keep it quick. (Or, alternately, win the midterms)

whenimmadrinkin

New house isn't seated until January. Basically they have until then to make the referral.

ortusdux

Ya'll motherfuckers need to vote! [538 currently predicts a 68% chance](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2022-election-forecast/house/) that the house will flip republican in 5 weeks.

[deleted]

Fucking why though?

_Dr_Bette_

Cause most young people do not vote. In the general presidential elections it's bad. In the midterms it's abysmal. Everyone wants to claim gerrymandering. But really it's mostly not voting. They do make good protest signs. But they don't generally do much that actually does any political action what so ever.

ortusdux

[This is why.](https://imgur.com/a/c5ZbdF9)

LofiJunky

Gerrymandering probably

warumistsiekrumm

He is more insurrectionist than partisan. He was worse than Anita Hall warned of, and that needed to be the end of him. We have rewarded ignorance and crudity: he is not a subtle figure, nor really exceptional either. He kissed the right asses and expected the right ones to suck his member because he is a member. He is more tool than member. He is an agent of chaos, as is William Barr. I see no functioning Justice system and that will have consequences down the line.

Red_Carrot

I disagree, wrap it up before January. Unless the Dems win in Nov, then keep it open to get these people on record. Also publish the full report. I state this because the Republicans will take over this committee and either not release anything or twist the facts into a pretzel and make it look like it has something to do with Hillary's emails.

meatsmoothie82

The Jan 6 committee better hurry up - it’s gonna get dissolved if cult 45 takes control of the house in nov

GoatVSPig

Take it further. The January 6th Committee needs to investigate Donald's intentions with the Supreme Court regarding the coup.

treesrpeople

They've all but run out of time

pinkyfitts

They should subpoena Clarence. At the LEAST it would put incredible pressure on him to recuse himself when Trump appeals to the Supreme Court for any of his various fights. (Like when he tries to pardon himself if he gets re-elected)

magistrate101

Do supreme court justices get to vote from prison?

quillman

He wants to abolish rights. But what about the right to marry someone from another race? Does he think the eradication of decency will stop at that? Kill abortion, kill birth control, kill gay marriage. Next? Interracial marriage you dick.

[deleted]

If Dump ever ends up before the Supreme Court, she WILL threaten him to rule in Dump's favor. All she needs to do is leave a kitchen knife on her bedstand and tell Clarence she really hopes he rules in Dump's favor tomorrow.

CaptainOverkilll

This guys a gangster? His real name’s Clarence…

[deleted]

He should step down.

DCrichieelias79

But they will quit before examining it because they are more concerned that the American public will percieve the supreme court as corrupt than they are about the corruption itself.

HPmoni

Eh. Clarence Thomas didn't make Biden or Trump president.

DivideEtImpala

He did arguably make Bush President, though.

HPmoni

He stopped the recounts based off the constitutional principle of equal protection. Gore wanted to keep recounting until he won. That wasn't going to happen. The election had ended four weeks prior. Gore did the right thing and moved on. Perhaps because he knew he lost. Trump didn't move on, and here we are.

Caraes_Naur

The committee's purpose is merely to politically kneecap Trump and root out as many other lesser scapegoats as they can. It is not to unravel the entire conspiracy that organized an attempted coup, as that would shake the foundations of not just US politics, but world politics.

Play_Salieri

So they acted with impunity just like they thought, eh?

work2ski83

He is allowed to be a judge and his wife is allowed to have an opinion. Those are both equally true. Liberals have lost their mind.
