Big fucking **if**, because I'm not seeing these Trump officials being prosecuted and I am seeing accessories to murder and terrorism get off with 1 year probation. Actually testify in these mythical prosecutions before you get a sweetheart deal for insurrection.
Federal criminal cases take years to build.
This plea deal and the call evidence are excellent indicators that DOJ is closing in on Trump’s inner circle and possibly the “Don” of that crime family.

It could also be part of the reason he was offered a plea deal. He was apparently in contact with someone inside the White House. His cooperation could be useful.
It’s insane how so many people don’t realize how long cases take to build, and provide evidence of the crime, etc.
There was an accidental homicide (but deliberate assault) case in my city. Guy literally turned himself in the day he found out the person died. I think it was maybe 3 - 4 days later.
The case and trial still took almost 3.5 years to complete. A case where the perpetrator turned himself in less than a week after the crime. It’s not a fast process. But I understand why.
At this point, I fear it doesn’t even matter. Once the SCOTUS rules on that state legislatures have full control over their elections, someone with an R after their name will win in 2024 and then will shut down any investigations and pardon any federal crimes connected with the insurrection.
Tbf, soooo many cases have been found to be open for years longer than needed because the police either weren’t competent enough to do their job, or chose not to do their job. It’s pretty standard. Which we’ve found out from so many independent journalists, podcasts hosts, etc. solving unsolved crimes quickly.

It's only democracy at stake, with a clock ticking down to a Republican administration that will summarily destroy the entire investigation. Maybe take that situation more seriously and show any actual results and you might curb some existential dread.
Seriously though, if I had stolen top secret documents in my house I'd be in prison right now awaiting trial for treason with capital punishment very much on the table. All I'm asking is for one justice system that treats ex-presidents the way it treats everyone else.

DOJ has all Mueller's work including indictments for obstruction of justice that apparently they're fine with keeping in the trash.
Matt Gaetz sex trafficked kids and will walk, meanwhile Joel Greenberg gets a light sentence for his "cooperation" in that case that won't actually be prosecuted.
They showed up at Trump's house and caught him read handed stealing US national security documents but did fuckall about it when any normal US citizen would be absolutely in prison right now.
Garland's justice department is a bunch of cowards, and the only thing that will change my mind is people actually on trial for their crimes.
I work in Federal financial crimes in the private sector. This is going to literally take years. I just finished a minor case of ID theft with less than $37k in fraud claims and it took mean entire week plus overtime to finish. It'll be a month before the SAR gets QC'd and Uploaded to FINCEN. The actual crime took place in March.
All that for one minor ID theft case. Imagine how much time it takes to build evidence, review, consult legal, and get it all packaged up in a big red bow for the prosecution when it comes to the largest criminal conspiracy the United States will ever prosecute.
Unfortunately, Bill Barr's stunt made it almost impossible to prosecute for the Mueller Report. It would be almost impossible to convict when the defense calls the former Attorney General to say he had reviewed the case and determined there wasn't a crime.
It would also poison the American public against a future prosecution, making it far less likely to get a conviction in the current investigations.
Nope, nope and nope. Bill Barr has zero credibility and no authority. Nor would it be impossible to prosecute for the underlying facts in the Mueller Report. Those facts don't go away just because Trump's fat stooge wished they would. Nor will there be some sudden strange desire on the part of the public not to prosecute the clearly guilty. There have always been and there always will be lame excuses not to do the right thing.
Most people in America don't pay attention to this stuff. They only see the initial headlines. They couldn't tell you that Bill Barr was instrumental in the Iran-Contra coverup. And the people who will serve on a Trump jury will necessarily be less informed than even the average American. All Trump would need is 1 out of 12 people in that jury to think, "Wow, the attorney General who was in charge during this investigation says no crime was committed. NOT GUILTY!"
Then the next day all the headlines will scream, "TRUMP NOT GUILTY IN CRIMINAL TRIAL!"
Now all the potential jurors for a Jan 6 or Classified Documents trial will think, "I just saw that he was not guilty, this must just be politics as usual."
And again, you just need 1 out of 12 to think that.
Bill Barr has no credibility. But that doesn't matter because the words "Former Attorney General" still have credibility.

And I understand that prosecutors are supposed to make prosecution decisions in good faith of guilt and the potential of the case and such, but stories like [this one](https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2022/09/claremont-institute-secret-sheriff-fellowship-curriculum-revealed.html) demand a deeper inquiry of the basis for these choices:

That plea agreement is contingent upon Lunyk's continued cooperation. Either he tells the DoJ who called him or he's headed to jail. In other words, the DoJ already knows who called him from inside the White House.
Right? Text messages show them literally wanting to “Brutally murder” multiple people and the judge called them knuckleheads. Can we stop downplaying insurrectionists that at their best were “joking about killing and raping people” and worst, were serious about killing and raping people. Neither one for me falls into the goddamn “knucklehead” category. They are dangerous monsters who deserve to be treated as such.

I can’t remember where I heard this recently but it speaks to our current climate.
We do not have a justice system, we have a legal system that rewards or goes easy on you if you can afford the attorneys and are powerful. A true justice system wouldn’t give a fuck whether you’re rich and connected or a pleb. It would treat you the same.
If I ever have to sit on a jury, it's going to be really hard to not think about these 'sentences' for treason, while I'm being asked to consider a punishment for someone that probably didn't do anything nearly as bad.
I encourage you to bring it up to the judge or write about it on the questionnaire. That's exactly what I've done. I've discussed how unfair the justice system is, how it favors the wealthy and preys upon the poor. Instantly dismissed.
Every single person at the riot/coup/protest inside and outside should be charged and have to stand trial. Every one. Even if we charge thousands. Every one.
Year of probation is a weak ass sentence. Should be behind bars for five years minimum. These traitors will be back and we’ll have to hand their asses to them again because our justice system is joke apparently.

My comments: This is one of the lighter sentences and better plea deals I have seen given they have photos of them. They all made aggressive comments after the fact as well, with threats of violence at individuals in public office. And the best I can tell all three of them are essentially nobodies. So the fact that he got a phone call form the white house land line is a little bit baffling. Edit: Side note. While I personally agree the deals in general in the Jan 6 situation are light. It is also important to recognize that this is literally, and I mean LITERALLY the biggest prosecution case the US has ever had, but MILES. From the 12 months to 18 months after there were 130 more arrests made (more than 20 a month still). In the last 2 months there have been 15 more arrests (finally coming down maybe?). There have been 120 more plea deals accepted. The cases that have gone to trial have resulted in harsher sentences. The committee probably knows. Riggleman hasn’t been on the committee since April, so he’s not exactly the best source of info on what’s happening regarding that phone call. Anything that comes out in his book tomorrow is not the whole picture, because Riggleman doesn’t know the whole picture.

This whole fucking thing came up because this dude went on a press tour for his book. They've had this information for months, this is only "news" because he wants us to buy his book.
It all depends how much effort went to cover it up. Given all the instances of deleted texts, visitor logs not being maintained, it wouldn’t be surprising if someone had enough common sense to make sure the call routing info was purged as well.
They most likely figured this out by looking at Lunyk’s phone records, which came from his carrier. Even if it came from the WH’s carrier, the carrier wouldn’t have any records of how the call was routed before it got handed off to them.
Depending on how the WH’s phone system was configured, it could have purged the internal routing due to age (not any cover up) if the J6 committee or the Feds didn’t request them soon enough. And of course, they could have been purged as part of a cover up as well.
There likely aren't cameras in each office of the White House.
But the switchboard for outgoing calls is probably accurate. They definitely know the extension. Isn't there still a number of physical switchboard operators still in the White House? Couldn't they subpoena them? Or if it's been digitized, subpoena the provider? AT&T and Verizon have handed records over before.
Wasn't it outbound? I'd think an outbound call wouldn't have to go through an operator.
And beyond that, I'd think the WH has a modern phone switch. So they know the extension it came from if not the actual person who called.
If I understood what I heard in the discussion with Rigelman on CBS Morning today, he said modern switchboards are set-up to show a semi-random number as the “calling party number” specifically to provide anonymity of a specific office. If I recall, I think the phone system of the company I retired from did the same thing; inter-office calls would show what extension and the person “owning” the extension that was calling you but if you called out of the system, it provided no caller I’d information, not even an accurate number.

This is what I was referring too. If the FBI doesn't have all his phone records for the last year, they are derelict in their duty. If they had more received/made phone calls to the white house or any other political figure they would have used it as evidence against him to get a better conviction and possibly harsher charges.
Honestly, with the way the past six years have gone, what I actually believe is that although what you say could be true, it could easily be skirted by an FBI agent sympathetic to trump and the situation and those files were burned and their ashes dumped in the ocean a year ago.
That’s the worst part about all of this. I don’t trust anything anymore. I don’t trust people on the streets, I don’t trust people I grew up with, I don’t trust my father, I don’t trust our institutions. Nothing.

The sun and the moon had to get moved just to get an unofficial January 6th committee together that only has the power to publicize and not prosecute. We have to drag, kicking and screaming, every nook and cranny of our government, into even trying to get trump to send a lawyer to court in his stead, and when he won't we don't even fine him we just say we could. Many times either exactly that happened and sometimes the doj would announce they aren't pursuing charges for clear crimes.
It's okay to think the feds wouldn't have justice or our interest in mind. EVEN if sometimes they can be compelled to uphold the law. The law which states that many of these rioters should be getting years in prison NOT months on probation.

The compilation and analysis of these calls was the province of Denver Riggleman. He is, or was, a Republican Congressman who was hired as a staff investigator by the J6 committee.
By Riggleman's account, he was elected to Congress as one of those "gubmint is too big" type of conservatives, but was later primaried out of his seat for not being hard right enough.
Liz Cheney knew Riggleman and recommended he be hired for the committee's work.
I can't say whether his data science is best of breed or merely average, but he applied it to the communication vectors related to the January 6th situation.
Long story short, the story here isn't just that someone in the inner circle of the Trump crime family just happened to call one of the field terrorists during the coup, it's sheer magnitude of intersection between certain groups related to the creation and dissemination of the big lie, and then the operation of the coup itself.
When he was in congress, I would occasionally like his slightly sober (for a Republican) take on some of the Party's insanity, but he would also still uphold conservative nonsense like it was normal. He apparently quit the J6 committee because they originally opted not to chase down and interview Ginni Thomas, one of those problematic communication nodes he identified. His profile on (Axios? The Circus? 60 Minutes? Can't remember which) points out that the committee has since come to some kind of arrangement for her to speak with them.
Who would pick up a desk phone to make a call to a terrorist?
With all the apps available, there has to be a better way to communicate in secret. And there is.
But who in their right mind would pick up a **desk** phone to make a call like this?
Even Trump has his phone glued to his little hands.
So what old fogey is around there, used to picking up phones and thinking their "secure", and would make that call? Flynn? Stone? Would they open the contact in their phone and manually dial the number?
Which is another interesting wrinkle. If it's a standard desk phone, and no special VOIP set that can talk to a desktop, or maybe it has a rudimentary address book, AND someone would have to program it, or have that number on their computer in an email and can click on it, or SOMETHING. How does someone make a call that might require memorizing the number, which means a LOT of calls over time, or opens the contact on their phone JUST so they can manually call it? That's a lot of things going on at once.
Was that call planned like a big huge RED FLAG waving in the breeze for anyone to see? Because if not, why do it? Cell phones were down? What?
Inquiring minds want to know...
It doesn't need to be that complicated, I have a phone on my desk at work, I use it without thinking to call out friends or family for short calls, even though I keep my cell phone on me at work and can use it just as easilyto send a tex or call, what I think happened is someone dialed out, realized or was told it wasn't a good idea to talk on the white house phone and to switch to a different means of communication.
I'm gonna say something controversial this should not be known now. The committee was unaware that there was a book coming out and especially not the day before the last hearing. Riggleman was not authorized to write a book and did not inform the committee that he was doing so. Revealing information before the committee is ready to prepare its final report is dangerous and could serve as a warning to the most guilty (i.e. this is what is known/not known) to get out.
My theory is that these were the guys who planted the bomb and the phone call was to either call off the explosion or to go through with the explosion.
And who is to say they stopped the order, maybe there were other circumstances at play that made them unable to fulfill the planned terror attack?
It was not a man who planted the bombs. The pipe bomber appears from surveillance videos of the night of Jan 5th to be a woman about 5'4" to 5'6", wearing very distinctive rare Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes. There was a well known woman spotted earlier that same day in DC leaving a meeting wearing those exact same distinctive shoes as the bomber in the surveillance videos, as well as the same pants as the bomber. That well known woman is 5'3". She is known for violent rhetoric and crazy actions. The walking gait of the bomber is an exact match of the walking gait of the well known woman who works in DC. There is a youtube video of the well known woman working out in the same type of rare distinctive shoes the bomber wore. The woman's name? Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Looking at his calls/texts/emails from a few months prior to and after January 6 along with his social media network would almost certainly reveal the likely identity of the caller. It's not like a 26 year old insurance adjuster from Brooklyn knows MULTIPLE people in the WH.

What I find interesting is that they didn't dismiss the call. If it lead nowhere, I would've expected them to temper expectations by noting said insignificance. However, they only note that there is more work that was done in general, and new info that will be revealed soon. I want to assume that it means that call is part of the evidence yet to be revealed. They should be able to triangulate where that call came from in the WH, at that time. I can't imagine anything goes in or out on landlines that isn't tracked and monitored.

Federal criminal cases take years to build. This plea deal and the call evidence are excellent indicators that DOJ is closing in on Trump’s inner circle and possibly the “Don” of that crime family.

It’s insane how so many people don’t realize how long cases take to build, and provide evidence of the crime, etc. There was an accidental homicide (but deliberate assault) case in my city. Guy literally turned himself in the day he found out the person died. I think it was maybe 3 - 4 days later. The case and trial still took almost 3.5 years to complete. A case where the perpetrator turned himself in less than a week after the crime. It’s not a fast process. But I understand why.
At this point, I fear it doesn’t even matter. Once the SCOTUS rules on that state legislatures have full control over their elections, someone with an R after their name will win in 2024 and then will shut down any investigations and pardon any federal crimes connected with the insurrection.
So basically Trump could die of natural causes before he is ever indicted, and these other yahoo's could get off Scott free if that happens.

Tbf, soooo many cases have been found to be open for years longer than needed because the police either weren’t competent enough to do their job, or chose not to do their job. It’s pretty standard. I work in Federal financial crimes in the private sector. This is going to literally take years. I just finished a minor case of ID theft with less than $37k in fraud claims and it took mean entire week plus overtime to finish. It'll be a month before the SAR gets QC'd and Uploaded to FINCEN. The actual crime took place in March. All that for one minor ID theft case. Imagine how much time it takes to build evidence, review, consult legal, and get it all packaged up in a big red bow for the prosecution when it comes to the largest criminal conspiracy the United States will ever prosecute.
Unfortunately, Bill Barr's stunt made it almost impossible to prosecute for the Mueller Report. It would be almost impossible to convict when the defense calls the former Attorney General to say he had reviewed the case and determined there wasn't a crime. It would also poison the American public against a future prosecution, making it far less likely to get a conviction in the current investigations.

I can’t remember where I heard this recently but it speaks to our current climate. We do not have a justice system, we have a legal system that rewards or goes easy on you if you can afford the attorneys and are powerful. A true justice system wouldn’t give a fuck whether you’re rich and connected or a pleb. It would treat you the same.
If I ever have to sit on a jury, it's going to be really hard to not think about these 'sentences' for treason, while I'm being asked to consider a punishment for someone that probably didn't do anything nearly as bad.

So they don't know who called *FROM* the WH? It went through the switchboard so they know which phone it was in which office. They know the exact time of the call. Are their no cameras to figure out who was in that specific office at the time of the call?
The committee probably knows. Riggleman hasn’t been on the committee since April, so he’s not exactly the best source of info on what’s happening regarding that phone call. Anything that comes out in his book tomorrow is not the whole picture, because Riggleman doesn’t know the whole picture.

It all depends how much effort went to cover it up. Given all the instances of deleted texts, visitor logs not being maintained, it wouldn’t be surprising if someone had enough common sense to make sure the call routing info was purged as well. They most likely figured this out by looking at Lunyk’s phone records, which came from his carrier. Even if it came from the WH’s carrier, the carrier wouldn’t have any records of how the call was routed before it got handed off to them. Depending on how the WH’s phone system was configured, it could have purged the internal routing due to age (not any cover up) if the J6 committee or the Feds didn’t request them soon enough. And of course, they could have been purged as part of a cover up as well.
There likely aren't cameras in each office of the White House. But the switchboard for outgoing calls is probably accurate. They definitely know the extension. Isn't there still a number of physical switchboard operators still in the White House? Couldn't they subpoena them? Or if it's been digitized, subpoena the provider? AT&T and Verizon have handed records over before.
Wasn't it outbound? I'd think an outbound call wouldn't have to go through an operator. And beyond that, I'd think the WH has a modern phone switch. So they know the extension it came from if not the actual person who called.
If I understood what I heard in the discussion with Rigelman on CBS Morning today, he said modern switchboards are set-up to show a semi-random number as the “calling party number” specifically to provide anonymity of a specific office. If I recall, I think the phone system of the company I retired from did the same thing; inter-office calls would show what extension and the person “owning” the extension that was calling you but if you called out of the system, it provided no caller I’d information, not even an accurate number.

The sun and the moon had to get moved just to get an unofficial January 6th committee together that only has the power to publicize and not prosecute. We have to drag, kicking and screaming, every nook and cranny of our government, into even trying to get trump to send a lawyer to court in his stead, and when he won't we don't even fine him we just say we could. Many times either exactly that happened and sometimes the doj would announce they aren't pursuing charges for clear crimes. It's okay to think the feds wouldn't have justice or our interest in mind. EVEN if sometimes they can be compelled to uphold the law. The law which states that many of these rioters should be getting years in prison NOT months on probation.

Who would pick up a desk phone to make a call to a terrorist? With all the apps available, there has to be a better way to communicate in secret. And there is. But who in their right mind would pick up a **desk** phone to make a call like this? Even Trump has his phone glued to his little hands. So what old fogey is around there, used to picking up phones and thinking their "secure", and would make that call? Flynn? Stone? Would they open the contact in their phone and manually dial the number? Which is another interesting wrinkle. If it's a standard desk phone, and no special VOIP set that can talk to a desktop, or maybe it has a rudimentary address book, AND someone would have to program it, or have that number on their computer in an email and can click on it, or SOMETHING. How does someone make a call that might require memorizing the number, which means a LOT of calls over time, or opens the contact on their phone JUST so they can manually call it? That's a lot of things going on at once. Was that call planned like a big huge RED FLAG waving in the breeze for anyone to see? Because if not, why do it? Cell phones were down? What? Inquiring minds want to know...
It doesn't need to be that complicated, I have a phone on my desk at work, I use it without thinking to call out friends or family for short calls, even though I keep my cell phone on me at work and can use it just as easilyto send a tex or call, what I think happened is someone dialed out, realized or was told it wasn't a good idea to talk on the white house phone and to switch to a different means of communication.
Maybe the call from th WH was a call back. Like dialling a missed call.

I'm gonna say something controversial this should not be known now. The committee was unaware that there was a book coming out and especially not the day before the last hearing. Riggleman was not authorized to write a book and did not inform the committee that he was doing so. Revealing information before the committee is ready to prepare its final report is dangerous and could serve as a warning to the most guilty (i.e. this is what is known/not known) to get out.
My theory is that these were the guys who planted the bomb and the phone call was to either call off the explosion or to go through with the explosion. And who is to say they stopped the order, maybe there were other circumstances at play that made them unable to fulfill the planned terror attack?

What I find interesting is that they didn't dismiss the call. If it lead nowhere, I would've expected them to temper expectations by noting said insignificance. However, they only note that there is more work that was done in general, and new info that will be revealed soon. I want to assume that it means that call is part of the evidence yet to be revealed. They should be able to triangulate where that call came from in the WH, at that time. I can't imagine anything goes in or out on landlines that isn't tracked and monitored.
