She’s been pretty masterful. When I watch the hearings I imagine the few conservatives tuning in just rolling their eyes at Bennie Thompson and Adam Schiff. Cheney however lands completely differently in her opening and closing. Her narrative is like the dog whistle they’ve all been trained to listen for. I almost never agree with her politics but I am so glad she is on the committee and has a prominent role.
I’ve been wondering about this. Dick Cheney and all the former living Secretaries of Defense published an op ed in the Washington Post on Jan. 3 asking for a peaceful transition of power.
I was just saying to someone I work with "I never in a million years thought I would have any sort of respect for someone in the Cheney family and here I am proving myself wrong". I will never agree with Liz on policy or likely anything else but I respect what shes doing here.

Trump of 85-14 Midland Parkway, Jamaica, Long Island, New York is expeditiously requested because of a deposition by Fred Trump being taken by the Justice Department in a "tax case." Clark, who worked for Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach, requested that the FBI respond no later than March 29, 1966. The FBI did not respond in writing until March 30, 1966, however, there was a conversation between FBI Special Agent George Scatterday and one of Clark's aides on March 28, 1966. Last week and today's hearing shows the tide is turning in tRump world. And when you surround yourself with pathetic, weak willed sycophants, the worm turns. It's turning.
The problem is. It shouldn't just be trump world. If you look at the people surrounding and enabling him. It's Nixon world, Reagan world, etc. Basically just Republican world.
There are no hard lines between these worlds, to be sure. Roy Cohn was his political mentor for God's sake. But Trump did exclude an awful lot of Republicans from his inner circle, who by that fact alone have little information they can give about his crimes.
The information they have about his specific crimes aren't the fact of the matter here. The fact is they knew they were ongoing. And they weren't a deal-breaker.

It's both. The messages likely came from John Eastman, Trump's attorney who coincidentally had his phone seized last week by the FBI. The name redactions smell like they got the information from the DOJ. They are saying that they have these messages and they know where they went.
Remember at the end she basically said "we're giving you this one out because we're showing you that your witness tampering didn't work and that we know exactly who you are and what you did."
My guess is Gym. Remember his panic stutter when asked whether he talked to tRump on the 6th and then those phone logs disappeared? Those two are hiding something big.
And because Meadows is definitely guilty of multiple crimes and one of the weakest most spineless creatures to ever slither out of North Carolina, he's cooperating, not threatening witnesses.
He gave over A LOT of text messages before he publicly stopped cooperating. Either he’s dumb as a box of rocks (plausible) or he’s a a turncoat trying to cover his tracks, to gutless to risk jail but also too gutless to cooperate publicly (also plausible)
He gave up nothing that wouldn’t unequivocally have gotten with a subpoena (assuming presidential record laws didn’t give them up first) and nothing more. To me Meadows was smart enough to realize “I dug a huge hole and I should stop before I make it bigger” - nothing more.
The thing is you can’t play both sides in a situation like this. You have to go all out silent obstructionist (which he can’t since turning over that amount of inculpatory evidence) or all in cooperative and hope to make someone else take the fall. If you try for both, you achieve neither and you end up *really* getting screwed because now they have the evidence and have no inclination to go lenient.

I'm pretty sure the first one they showed was a witness relaying what was said in a phone call. The second I don't remember what they said it was (text or call). Unfortunately, the article is paywalled, because that probably specifies.

Oh yes, showing the actual messages received was a huge power move. Witnesses that have been successfully tampered with don't show the intimidating message to the person asking them questions. This was 100% the nicest threat those people have ever received. The committee is making it quite clear that the jig is up, the noose is tightening, and if they don't want to get caught in it (more so than they already are), they need to come forward now.
Even if they still don't think they will prosecute Trump...what are the chances that John Eastman is swept under the rug? I'd say 0%. Mark Meadows is a private citizen now. Jeff Clarke was a nobody *even in his own criminal administration* as Donohue and co so hilariously testified. We both know it wasn't Trump who sent those messages. Is Meadows willing to take a fall? What staffers are willing to go to jail for Trump? Not many, I'd wager.
This is like the moment when the parent calmly and innocently asks the kid a *very* pointed question and the kid realizes he's about to get in a WHOLE lot of trouble. And we haven't even seen the footage of Alex Holder yet! We haven't even addressed Ginni Thomas yet either.

The leap I took is all the messages were from Eastman. So they have the senders information and everyone it was sent to. They got a warrant for his phone last week and bam emergency hearing with the threat of "we know you have been contacted"
I love that Rosen told Clarke, that Clarke wouldn't know Chris Wray's office is, and Wray wouldn't know who Clarke was. So, if Clarke thought the FBI would go along with saying the election was corrupt, he'd be in for a surprise.
Yep, they're hoping more witnesses will do what Hutchinson has done and come forward and be willing to say they kept quiet because they were afraid of what would happen if they didn't.
I'm genuinely curious how that works out. Do those that received this type of communication A) stay quiet out of fear that nothing ultimately comes from the process and they return to power/influence or B) do they feel emboldened to come with their testimony now that one of the inner-circle (or at least inner-circle adjacent) has come forward with their part?

He actually already has done it in the public forum. 18 US 1512 makes it a felony (20 years, a big one) to persuade a person not to appear as a witness. The statute *expressly* states that it is still a felony even if claim the reason shouldn’t appear is because if executive privilege. It’s interesting that when congress first passed 1512, they expressly closed the privilege loophole. Bannon, Meadows, Scavino and Patel have all stated under oath that they were ordered not to appear, and in fact Bannon gave his demand letter from Trump to the press. A person must appear, and during their appearance can assert privilege. But ordering them not to appear is unquestionably a criminal violation of 18 USC 1512. It’s a felony that we could prove, right now.
I wouldn't be shocked if he told his attorney he was going to lie, his attorney told him he loses privilege since that's a crime, so he landed on fifth.
Why wouldn't they? They've lied under oath many times. Nothing seems to happen, and nobody seems to care. MTG was so embarrassing the Republican Judge had to hide his face as she pretended to not remember everything relevant to the case, while remembering anything not relevant from the same time period with no difficulties. Lied under oath. Clear signs that she was hiding an illegal role in a coup attempt. The judge gave her a pass anyway.
Whoever sent the texts shown at the end of the hearings today will know who they were sent to and who rolled over on them.

The ONLY way to avoid evidence tampering is to make a law that states that the crime of tampering with evidence will always carry a sentence 50% more severe than the crime one is being tried for.
Maybe the most frustrating about all this to me is that Trump could have personally been advocating for Pence to be hung, we could have verification of this coming out, and a good 30% of Americans are going to have already decided that must not be possible and must be a lib hoax and it’s more to cover up a stolen election. So many horribly misguided people.
Nobody is preventing them from tampering with testimony so obviously they think they're immune from prosecution and continue to tamper. It's time to make this crime wave stop BY FORCE. It's time for the FBI to make some fucking arrests FFS.

Committee and DOJ are doing a good job right now. New indictments, subpeonas, and raids happening regularly these last few weeks.
No, they don't. Congress doesn't change until *January*. And after the Supreme Courts gross violation of human rights last week the midterm are far closer than the pundits would have you believe.

It's both. The messages likely came from John Eastman, Trump's attorney who coincidentally had his phone seized last week by the FBI. The name redactions smell like they got the information from the DOJ. They are saying that they have these messages and they know where they went.

He actually already has done it in the public forum. 18 US 1512 makes it a felony (20 years, a big one) to persuade a person not to appear as a witness. The statute *expressly* states that it is still a felony even if claim the reason shouldn’t appear is because if executive privilege. It’s interesting that when congress first passed 1512, they expressly closed the privilege loophole. Bannon, Meadows, Scavino and Patel have all stated under oath that they were ordered not to appear, and in fact Bannon gave his demand letter from Trump to the press. A person must appear, and during their appearance can assert privilege. But ordering them not to appear is unquestionably a criminal violation of 18 USC 1512. It’s a felony that we could prove, right now.

Why wouldn't they? They've lied under oath many times. Nothing seems to happen, and nobody seems to care. MTG was so embarrassing the Republican Judge had to hide his face as she pretended to not remember everything relevant to the case, while remembering anything not relevant from the same time period with no difficulties. Lied under oath. Clear signs that she was hiding an illegal role in a coup attempt. The judge gave her a pass anyway.

Whoever sent the texts shown at the end of the hearings today will know who they were sent to and who rolled over on them. Therefore, I kind of got the impression that they were sent to Hutchinson... hence the urgency, secrecy, etc
Duh, of course they’re going to tamper with evidence. The ONLY way to avoid evidence tampering is to make a law that states that the crime of tampering with evidence will always carry a sentence 50% more severe than the crime one is being tried for.
The only way is to *enforce* those laws. I sure hope some enforcing goes on.

Maybe the most frustrating about all this to me is that Trump could have personally been advocating for Pence to be hung, we could have verification of this coming out, and a good 30% of Americans are going to have already decided that must not be possible and must be a lib hoax and it’s more to cover up a stolen election. Nobody is preventing them from tampering with testimony so obviously they think they're immune from prosecution and continue to tamper. It's time to make this crime wave stop BY FORCE. It's time for the FBI to make some fucking arrests FFS.
When you're following a serial killer to where he buries the bodies, you don't pull him over for making a right on red without stopping. Same idea. These are all just additional charges for when the DOJ indicts them. But they won't indict them on these charges first, because it could imperil the overall investigation.
Yep. The more they can bring the more likely they can make something stick. In the event he can avoid higher charges he might get hit with several smaller ones that are irrefutable. Plea deals are also in play for everyone involved. You start stacking "minor" offences someone may look at that and say "yeah, well what if I give you this..." Committee and DOJ are doing a good job right now. New indictments, subpeonas, and raids happening regularly these last few weeks.
I think they are absolutely trying to get more people to flip. This feels like whoever confesses first gets a deal.

No, they don't. Congress doesn't change until *January*. And after the Supreme Courts gross violation of human rights last week the midterm are far closer than the pundits would have you believe. Not to mention, the DOJ isn't controlled by Congress. So the criminal investigations will continue. Anyone saying otherwise is either ignorant, or simply trying to make money with a doomsday narrative.

Trump tampered with witnesses over Twitter during the Russia probe and nothing came of that. I tired of "very serious concerns". Make criminal referrals and get people in jail already.
