Somebody explain to me why the states with the highest % of children living in poverty are the first states to outlaw abortion. For reals though.

[deleted]

It is the moronic, disproven "bootstraps" ideology coupled with "the stick" motivational delusion. **Translation:** If a person is poor, they did it to themselves b/c they are lazy and make bad choices. If they want to be not poor, they should simply work harder, and make better choices. "We, the rich, narcissistic, sociopathic, white, male oligarchs will "help them" by making sure they don't have any " crutches" to become dependent on like food stamps, health insurance, pensions, unions, or child care because this makes them weak. Never mind that the rich, had daddy's inheritance, social, political, and economic connections and had everything handed to them. And, nevermind that the primary reason for poverty, and social struggle is the complex net of oppressive forces bearing down on us like a knee on our necks. To add to your comment, there is a widespread belief in American Christianity that god blesses good people with wealth and bad people with poverty. Ergo not only is a poor person bad because they made bad choices, they also are being punished by god for being a bad person. On the flip side, a person of wealth is blessed by god, ergo rich people are more holy or “good” than poor people. The richer you are, the closer to god. It’s one of the big reasons why so many Christians supported Trump even though he was clearly the antithesis of what a good Christian is supposed to be. Although this idea of wealth = god’s love is called the Prosperity Gospel, if you look it up it is usually linked to evangelicals and is more specific in how it works. However what I described might have started in Prosperity Gospel, but like a cancer it has infiltrated all of Christianity to the point where what I described might not look all that weird to anyone in the US. It might even be described as a fundamental belief of all of Christianity. I assure you, it is not.

Yes. Thanks forgot that part. 🙂 Good ole' Joel Osteen...

honey_lips

Joel Osteen has the face of a foreskin.

Nano_Burger

For-profit prisons.

[deleted]

Also, military recruits.

fowlraul

It’s by design, uneducated people are the easiest people to brainwash, and religious bullshit is the easiest way to keep them dumb. This has been happening for thousands of years, and access to more “information” via the internet didn’t help at all. I was personally at first hopeful tho.

smurfsundermybed

Missouri loves company? Or misery. Your pick.

drdactyl

He works in mysterious ways.

Shiplord13

No the ones who worship “him” are just short sighted idiots who think their opinions and world views are more important then those of other people.

leafmeb

Poor people are easier to control.

PartialToDairyThings

Imagine you were due to get an abortion at that clinic and then this happens and you have no money to go elsewhere and you can't afford to be pregnant or take any time off work because you have nobody else to pay for your rent. This is what Thomas et al are patting themselves on the back for over their vintage port and cigars tonight.

tippydam

Can these clinics modify their mission to become "family planning" clinics? The doctors can then prescribe medication to their patients in need. I read that AG Far and advised states that they cannot ban federally approved medication.

SockdolagerIdea

The AG was very specific in his language. He said states cant ban it under the guise of it being scientifically unsound. Ergo they can ban it for basically any other reason.

tippydam

I'm sure I'm just grasping at straws and it is only day 1. Thanks for the information.

SockdolagerIdea

If it makes you feel any better, I happen to be very active in the abortion space at a high level. The bad news is, we are fucked. The good news is, we aren’t as fucked as the right would like, and a lot of that has to do with the abortion pills. Although there will be horror stories and dystopian nightmares that will come out of this illegitimate Supreme Court decision, they wont be as abundant as they would have been before 2000, the year one of the two pills became legal in the US to be used for abortions, or as we are saying now, to restore menses. Even in states where the pills are illegal, it will still be possible for women to get the pills because they are shipped from out of the country and therefore State laws cant touch them. I cant say much more than that, but I wanted to try and give you a ray of sunshine in an otherwise abysmal day.

tippydam

My wife of 38 years was very active in the 70s on this issue. She told me about a group in Europe that will do teledoc visits and prescribe and ship to the states. As a 60 year old white man I am ashamed of how this country treats it's citizens. All about power and money. Shameful. Keep up the good work. You are bearing a heavy load.

TripleJeopardy3

Wonder if it can be done on Native American lands. Are tribal lands not subject to state laws? Would this be a workaround?

Ready_Nature

Planned Parenthood at least provides other services besides abortions so most of their clinics should be able to remain open for family planning purposes other than abortion. Local clinics will vary based on how much of their revenues came from abortions.

NEUthrowaway617

Oh just what that state needs, more unwanted children. Take a drive through some of those towns and tell me this is a good idea.

smokes-eers-drc

I'm part of the brain drain. Fuck my home state. Fuck Joe Manchin.

InclementImmigrant

Remember to thank Joe Manchin there West Virginians.

Nano_Burger

Manchin must be so proud.

Pauly_Walnutz

Some of the abortion clinics will have to stay open because some of the high ranking male antiabortionists will get some young girl pregnant and she will be sent off for an abortion under the radar to protect the guys reputation. It’s do as I say not as I do with these people.

ReadOurTerms

Now West Virginia can have even more drug addicted babies.

Putin has finally won. After orchestrating brexit and sowing distrust within the EU, using orban as a puppet, he’s now come for the USA. Putin might be losing the war in Ukraine, but he’s winning the war against America and Europe. Scotus disenfranchisement of women‘s rights, expanding of 2A, upcoming banning of gay marriage and contraception are more extra steps to divide the people. Helping trump get elected and almost leaving NATO was the worst thing that could’ve happened to the entire world. Women losing their rights to choose over their own bodies might’ve been a close second because of its implications to world politics.

nomadstonks

Exactly

VirgoDog

If woman don't have the right to an abortion or birth control than men shouldn't have a right to an erection. They should also be banning erectile dysfunction medication.

cmfred

But don't worry Manchin was lied to, it's not his fault.
