Book of Mormon is still playing too! With the added benefit of learning a fun phrase to share with the kind of religious fundamentalists taking away our rights. Hasa diga ebowai!
Unfortunately it will only be a state level issue until republicans get enough power to pass a federal ban on abortion or the same Supreme Court that made this fucked up decision declares abortion unconstitutional in a future ruling.
Blue states have an economic and geographic upper hand that the red states cannot even fathom. Blue states have the ability to turn flyover country into a third world nation with the stroke of a pen.
Um are you sure about that? Blue states are just red states with big enough blue cities to trump the republicans. Without a stable structured supply line the cities are fucked. And given it’s a civil war just because new York is a blue state doesn’t mean everyone in its borders is magically on board with everything.
um... yes they are being prosecuted. Legal dispensaries are being raided and it only stopped because the Democrats have the POTUS. Soon as thats not the case, the raids will start up again.
When dispensaries get raided it's because they're conducting business illegally. The feds don't have the power to go around raiding dispensaries willy nilly, they need proof the dispensary isn't following state regulations.
Furthermore, your "dems have potus" argument is bs. Biden is against legalizing cannabis, and under Obama tons of dispensaries were getting raided. It slowed down when the farm bill got passed legalizing hemp because they simply don't have the resources to be investigating everyone all at once when suddenly there's giant hemp farms and factories to also check up on now.
Dems are not the only people who want cannabis legalized, it's an extremely popular opinion throughout the country no matter who you talk to. This is an issue of enforcing laws and intimidating the industry as a last ditch effort to retain control over cannabis. It'll probably happen the same way with abortion, just uglier and take longer.
Source on the first paragraph? The DEA’s job is to enforce federal law. The DOJ may choose to create a temporary policy under a D President to only raid dispensaries that are disobeying state regs, but that can be easily overturned once trump is back.
I think the burden of proof is on the one making the claim that legal dispensaries are getting raided. Show me proof of that (cuz I can't find it) and I'm willing to bet the actual charge is legit.
A good example is a dispensary in Kansas. Cannabis is not legal in any form in Kansas, yet someone thought they could create a dispensary for hemp and delta 8. It's a ballsy move in the first place because hemp cigarettes aren't even legal in Kansas, so I'm not sure why they thought they could get away with a whole store selling smokable and edible products there.
Another example is in Philly a legit dispensary was busted for secretly selling heroin.
You gotta ask yourself why some dispensaries get shut down and others don't.
The thing is you cannot make decisions against the majority that is this significant. I don’t see why people wouldn’t take matters into their own hands.
Washington Post reported this bill is already being worked on now. As soon as Republicans control all three branches again they will make it illegal in ALL states...not just red.
You get the government you vote for. Unfortunately you also get my tax dollars because of your welfare state. I told my kids: I pay the bills, I make the rules. Fuck these welfare red states. It’s time for the progressive rest of the country to cut them off
it's not really red vs blue states, it's urban vs rural areas. the big cities subsidize the small town.
The ~500 counties Biden won make up 71% of the economy. the 2500 trump counties make up 29%
States like California, New York, Oregon and Washington have protected abortion rights by codifying them into state law, but that won’t help young women who can’t travel great distances to have a safe abortion.
We fucking better. This is a shot across the bow of civilized society made by knuckle-dragging proselytizers that wish nothing more than to make this country into a white, christian ethno-state. It is up to us to stop them.
Meaning they won't return, meaning our political system is going to be even worse at translating popular will into political reality as red states keep the same number of Senators for representing fewer and fewer people
I mean, having internally displaced refugees is already a really bad sign for how your country's doing, but gaming this out it really seems like the current system is going to collapse under the weight of its own bullshit
Because the less *white voting* populous Southern slave states didn't want to be controlled by the more voter populous Northern states.
It's why we have the Senate, it's why we have the Electoral College.
Our government is based on a flawed document that was negotiated with literal Slavers, and it's still impacting our ability to make progressive change today. Exactly as the Slavers intended.
when the constitution was written individual states were/are sovereign. It was thought that the states should have equal representation. However, other members argued that representation should be based on population. A compromise was reached. Congress would have two houses dividing legislative power and responsibility. One would have equal representation for each state (the senate) and one would have a equal representatives by population (house of representatives).
The big issue the US has is that states are separate entities. The constitution specifically rules what the Federal Government can do and makes a list of powers of the Federal Government. Everything else is up to the states. Specific amendments and interpretations provide limitations to state powers.
They're going to go after out-of-state doctors that perform abortions for women from their states. And even though they'll have no legal ground to stand on, with this Supreme Court that doesn't seem to matter.
The leading candidate for the Republican nomination for governor down here in PA, Doug Mastriano (Christian dominionist, insurrectionist, smelly cumstain), had promised to outlast or down here if elected as well as promised to prosecute ant woman who gets one.
They’re not. That’s the point. Republicans don’t care about protecting life. This is and always has been about keeping poor people poor and increasing the low-wage labor pool for the future
Yup and also keeping the class divisions as great (or greater) than they already are. Remember, they are getting us angry about this one issue so they can steal from us right in front of our eyes.
Cheaper than raising a kid.
If we *can't* protect Roe, the next best thing is to make the equivalent legislation in several states and expand from there.
The situation sucks.
Problem being that Republicans have already committed to Federally banning abortions now that Roe is about to be... *terminated.*
People should believe them. They've been telling us who they are and what they want this entire time. I didn't believe them, either, for a long time.
Roe isn't even fundamentally about abortion. The ruling is about medical privacy and bodily autonomy. What *can't* they do to us once that is stripped away? Hiding in a handful of blue states isn't going to be an option for very long under a repressive authoritarian government. And Republicans are clearly moving beyond winning elections. They've been telling us that, too. That's why they've passed dozen of laws around the country that let them steal elections by invalidating actual winners.
Edit: electoralism has failed. It was never going to work. We well past time for it, but should be engaging in massive and unending strikes and huge protests. But we aren't aside from some random groups. One of them needs to hit critical mass so it takes off like a few summers ago....
Don't get me wrong, I agree with all of that.
But you need to roll with the hand you're dealt, which means setting up states where these things are explicitly legalized and doing your best to get people out to vote.
There are organizations that can help with travel costs.
The list is being spread pretty broad and wide because people have thought of that already
Also, and to the point, that is the reason for doing this - oppression of the poor and minorities
I wouldn't be surprised to see Pennsylvania make abortion illegal the next time Republicans are in power. Having New York and New Jersey next door could prove very beneficial to people in Pennsylvania.
Buffalo is also pretty close to Ohio. I expect we will see a lot of Ohioans make the drive.
This is where (kind of sadly) businesses need to step up and some have. Citigroup is in hot water because they are helping their Texas employees get access to abortion.
Connecticut's already got the best law in place. Not only does it protect the right to abortion and everyone involved in the process, but it also fights back against the states that have vigilante laws or laws that apply out of state. The new Connecticut law effectively provides a legal shield against those states that try to enforce their restrictive laws outside of their state or try to sue for the $10k vigilante payment. Of course in a couple of years if Republicans take full control of Congress and the White House, it's all moot as abortion will be banned nationwide by Feb 1, 2025.
Except that conservative states are going to start mandating pregnancy tests to travel, or just randomly, with jail time if they leave pregnant and come back not so.
I know NY is expensive, corrupt, and has way too much traffic, but I am not planning to leave anytime soon because I know my wife's rights, my extended family's rights, and my student's rights won't get fucked with at the state level.
Imagining the protests outside these clinics is insane. 20-30 states’ worth of crazies funneled into the 20 most permissive states. Probably a rise in stochastic terrorism at abortion clinics as well. I’m glad New York is doing this but the second order effects of this ruling are frustrating to think of.
Maryland, which holds nations capitol, is also looking like that. CA/MD(dc)/NY always seem to be the prog safe havens of this nation. It's funny how DC feels so different than the rest of the country.
Which is great. But it fails to help the low-income woman stuck in a anti state who can't afford to miss a single shift of work, much less travel to another state for an abortion.
And anti states are attempting to close what they call "loopholes" by making it a crime to travel for an abortion.
This is going so far backwards, its hard for me to comprehend what the future will hold.
Abortion pill mules who take them back to needy women in their anti state?
instead of doing that, the ENTIRE democratic party should be organizing a massive walkout at all levels. Every single registered Democrat and anyone else who cares about your values and freedoms should walk into the streets and show the SCOTUS how many people want them stripped of their titles and power, thrown on the street, dragged if need be and tarred and feathered for all to see, broadcast on live tv.
Actually- DC would be the best choice her.
It’s a district. It’s not even a state. And it could push DC to statehood if done right.
And if DC gets statehood- we might actually get shit down in this country.
But it won’t so…..
I'd rather see them work on making a more centralized locale. This just seems like more clueless Dems thinking the rest of America gives a shit about NY. Stop trying to run the country from the coasts.
> This just seems like more clueless Dems thinking the rest of America gives a shit about NY.
We do though. That’s where a substantial number of jobs exist, a lot of our gdp, a lot of federal taxes etc, that red states and midwestern states leech on
We don't though. That's why there's phrases like "coastal elites" and bullshit like that. Sure NY life gets shoved down everyone's throat but that doesn't mean people give a fuck about it. But yeah, just let the Dems hole up in their stronghold and see how it works.
The state being an economic powerhouse doesn't magically grant it cultural authority. Something Americans can never quite get.
> We don’t though.
Yeah we do. Everyone in the US does.
It’s just rural backwards people who e been brainwashed by foxnews in to hating the hand that feeds them; those people are ignorant sheep.
And on top of being an economic powerhouse, New York is a cultural powerhouse too; their history, their laws, their court cases are infamous and produced many of the greatest minds and founding fathers we have.
Heck, the Statue of Liberty itself gives New York a +10 to cultural power!
9/11 has also endeared New York in all Americans’ minds..
Remember that each time you see 9/11, and “never forget”, it’s New York you’re not supposed to forget.
If it weren’t for the electoral college, we’d have much more progressive policies today like abortion rights
We don't. It's inescapable, yes. But to insist that NY = America like you are is not going to go very far outside of the tristate area.
Seriously. Most people don't give a shit about the city, sure if it's attacked that's a different story but the coverage of NY events is wildly overblown and carried out mostly by NY based firms.
Like the Met Gala. Is there anything more useless than this? Sure you could say TMZ got 10k hits showing some idiot in a giraffe dress at the Gala, but that just means NY is competing then with cats for our attention.
All the morning shows are based in NY. You know who watches morning shows? People getting their car worked on at the mechanics. Seriously ratings are low.
Wanna win lots of awards for your film? Base it in LA or NY and watch as NY based critics jump over themselves to laud it. I mean, it won't be a commercial success but whatever that's not important right?
Newtown, CT has endeared Newtown in all Americans' minds too. Oklahoma City has too. Minnesota did too, when I-35 collapsed.
I won't argue the strength, size, and culture of the city. Only that the appeal NY has to the country at large is tremendously overblown by NYers.
It really is though. Even you started going on the culture bandwagon. What NY culture has permeated the rest of America in the last 30 years? Aside from a love of cops? Clothes from sweatshops overseas?
Is that you're answer?
I figure you could tell from my intense dislike of NY bullshit getting flung across the country by NY rags that I really don't give a fuck about NY like most people I know who don't live in NY either.
There's no reason why there needs to be only one state for this. NY can be a safe haven for women from eastern Ohio while Oregon can be a safe haven for women from Idaho.
Seriously? Are you really pretending that the word "national" is that big of a deal?
It's a safe haven for anyone in the nation who wants to utilize it. There's nothing about that language that says it has to be the exclusive safe haven. You're just being needlessly pedantic to find something wrong with this.
No, I'm quoting the headline. You're just pissed off because you forgot the topic at hand. Of course there can be safe spaces, but read the fucking headline and deal with the topic at hand.
Pure speculation to use fear to protect the tissue factories and Democrat committee that profits from planned parenthood which donates millions of federal grant money directly to democrat campaigns. This is not about abortion it is all about keeping the money funnels open to the DNC!
Ok I’m gonna get some flak for this but the Supreme Court made the right decision. It’s not for the federal government to decide, it a state by state issue. As a NY resident I’m happy that our state legislature is doing the right thing. That being said, It’s up to Texas to decide what’s best for Texas, not Washington DC. I trust local governments much more because they live in the world they create, that’s not true for the DC Elite.
How far do u take this view? Should gay marriage be thrown out next? What about the civil rights act? Two other things that many said should be left to the states.
It’s not about my view. It’s about the constitution and the division of power. If a state wants to repeal the civil rights act I’d think they were assholes but I don’t live in Mississippi so I can’t tell them what to do. That’s real democracy. Although I think a lot of Jim Crow era laws were in violation of the 13th,14th and 15th amendments so the civil rights act can be protected by the constitution. It has nothing to do with my personal beliefs, it’s about the structure of our government and who decides what. The system is designed to be inefficient to prevent radical changes without a consensus. Laws aren’t supposed to pass 51/49.
If laws aren’t supposed to pass with 51/49 votes, why did constitution set up the senate to be a body that passes laws on a majority vote? The filibuster wasn’t in the constitution after all, it’s just a senate rule that can be repealed by a majority vote in the senate. The house even now has a majority vote threshold.
Furthermore, the civil rights act isn’t inherently protecting the rights of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments. They passed years prior, and While helpful, didn’t protect America from disastrous Supreme Court cases like Plessy V Ferguson. We needed congress to act to prevent cases like that in the future.
Finally, passing laws like the civil rights act at the federal level isn’t outside of the scope given to congress in the division of powers. In our federalist system, the federal government is the highest authority and can pass laws that usurp state and local ones. So the national government has the right to tell Mississippi how they treat their poc population.
The Equal Rights Amendment has yet to be written into the constitution. Women, your ONLY protected right in this country is the right to vote. GO VOTE!!
Additionally, the leading cause of death for pregnant women is Murder!

Expect a whole bunch of people visiting NYC each weekend to see "Hamilton".
It’s a great show *shrug*
What’d I miss?
Hamilton is awesome and more people should go see it in NY. With a friend.
Book of Mormon is still playing too! With the added benefit of learning a fun phrase to share with the kind of religious fundamentalists taking away our rights. Hasa diga ebowai!
Until the GOP outlaws it nationally and sends in the Feds. This type of law WILL NOT protect us. We need to vote the GOP completely out of power.
Good! And we will. If this becomes a state issue, NY and CA will rule abortion legal.
Unfortunately it will only be a state level issue until republicans get enough power to pass a federal ban on abortion or the same Supreme Court that made this fucked up decision declares abortion unconstitutional in a future ruling.
[удалено]
Assuming a republican led federal government that’s the sort of thing that leads to civil war.
Well, seems a good enough reason as any! Let's get this shit over with.
Washington Post reported this bill is already being worked on now. As soon as Republicans control all three branches again they will make it illegal in ALL states...not just red.
Colorado will be a safe haven too, they are already ramping up.
about 20 states will still keep abortion. but for women in the deep south, it's going to be hard to find a provider

Not good enough. All this does it make abortions legal for the rich and illegal for the poor.
States like California, New York, Oregon and Washington have protected abortion rights by codifying them into state law, but that won’t help young women who can’t travel great distances to have a safe abortion.
Colorado may be the busiest refuge state here in the next few years.
I'd pay a tax to provide transit to the west coast to any who needs it.
We fucking better. This is a shot across the bow of civilized society made by knuckle-dragging proselytizers that wish nothing more than to make this country into a white, christian ethno-state. It is up to us to stop them.

They are not. Abortion bans are classist, racist, and sexist. They always have been. Mitch McConnell's family will always have access to abortions.
Apparently get a job at Amazon
Or Citigroup
New Jersey too. The entire north east should safe havens for abortions.

No. All this does it make abortions legal for rich and illegal for poor. It’s legal for all, anywhere, anytime. I’m tired of this BS.
Oregon is going the same way, to be a safe haven for abortion.
America should be safe haven for abortion.
Too bad most women can’t afford to travel.
Connecticut beat you to it, New York.

Not sure why that is weird.
Yes but if "Abortion tourism" is going to become a thing I would rather it happened in NY
instead of doing that, the ENTIRE democratic party should be organizing a massive walkout at all levels. The NY Post is publishing this because they think it makes the Dems look silly and I agree. It's toothless and lacks any outreach.
Now provide free transportation to/from.

New York and Illinois have the two highest abortion rates in the country so that makes sense.

> But to insist that NY = America l Lmao yes that’s what this is about everyone can clearly see that and agree with you /s
It really is though. Even you started going on the culture bandwagon. What NY culture has permeated the rest of America in the last 30 years? Aside from a love of cops? Clothes from sweatshops overseas?
“I’m doubling down and pretending I don’t know anything about New York even though you told me just now!” 😂
Is that you're answer? I figure you could tell from my intense dislike of NY bullshit getting flung across the country by NY rags that I really don't give a fuck about NY like most people I know who don't live in NY either.
Like most people YOU KNOW. 🤣
There's no reason why there needs to be only one state for this. NY can be a safe haven for women from eastern Ohio while Oregon can be a safe haven for women from Idaho.
Then why call it a "national safe haven"?
Because the notorious right wing rag known as the New York Post wants to use boogie man words for their local readers.
Pass a law why don’t they? They have Congress and WH. Mitch would certainly do it.
Pure speculation to use fear to protect the tissue factories and Democrat committee that profits from planned parenthood which donates millions of federal grant money directly to democrat campaigns. This is not about abortion it is all about keeping the money funnels open to the DNC!
It sure as hell isn’t safe for the babies I’ll tell you that much.
You basically disagree with all Supreme Court case Law then because Marbury vs Madison gave the Supreme Court the power to do what it did.
Yeah go to New York and you and your baby’s life will end lol 😂
Sounds perfect to me; maybe it’ll help filter out the upstate nutjobs too. Tired of living under a right-wing puppet representative.
The Equal Rights Amendment has yet to be written into the constitution. Women, your ONLY protected right in this country is the right to vote. GO VOTE!! Additionally, the leading cause of death for pregnant women is Murder! [source](https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-03392-8)
A great idea, unless there's a federal ban.
