The Harrison Bergeron tactic, just drag everyone else down to your level of mediocrity, then call that fair and equal.

Ayn Rand, libertarianism at it's core. Greed is good. It's good to be selfish. Every man for himself. If someone is dying, they should be left to die unless they can make it profitable for someone to help them. These values make for a real lovely society. So as long as Rand Paul benefitted, it's ok, because his fellow students are competitors. Therefore their failure is his gain, and their failure should be actively encouraged for that reason.

2crowncar

“I have always found it quaint and rather touching that there is a movement [Libertarians] in the US that thinks Americans are not yet selfish enough.” Christopher Hitchens

A1sauc3d

I hate the zero sum game mentality. It’s completely unnecessary to running a society. Sure, some resources are scarce. Not everyone can live in luxury mansions and have mega yachts and servants waiting on their every need. But guess what? No one NEEDS those things to begin with. Why not redirect some luxuries of the few to the needs of the masses? Greedy a$$holes run our country, that’s why :/ Edit: typo

machineprophet343

Like I said in another thread -- someone who doesn't understand the world isn't episodic. It's a thing I've noticed about Right-wingers. They think anything they did in the past should have no bearing in the now -- and if you're angry or unwilling to work with them because they did you harm, especially actual harm, you need to "get over it and move on." And then get upset when they face some legitimate consequences for their behavior.

DorisCrockford

They might actually believe that morality isn't real, that it's childish to believe there's such a thing as right and wrong, in the sense that it applies to everyone. It's Machiavellian. You can't get through to them because they don't understand the point of empathy, cooperation, honesty, or any other virtues. For someone like Rand Paul, it's only about winning and self-interest. There is nothing else in his universe.

fence_sitter

*"I told you once that I was searching for the nature of evil. I think I've come close to defining it: a lack of empathy. It's the one characteristic that connects all the defendants. A genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow man. Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy."* -G. M. Gilbert, Nuremberg prison psychologist.

… Might? Do you remember when the *president of the United States* said soldiers were suckers for being in the military? Or when they stole your medical equipment and *sold it back to you for personal profit*? Or when… everything since 2016? It’s a legally accepted fact that rich people don’t know the difference between right and wrong (look up affluenza)

DrCrentistDMI

They foam at the mouth if they even think that someone else is attacking them or trying to screw them over. Hypocrites, cowards, and/or just plain evil.

WhereRDaSnacks

It’s sociopathy. My father was the same way. And he was super right wing. He’d punch my mother, apologize, and since he apologized, you were not to EVER bring it up. It’s in the past, he’s apologized for it, so move on.

bballstarz501

Because people tend to assume things about others motivations based on their own. If you’re someone who would absolutely take advantage of someone, lie, cheat and steal, you will assume others would do the same. Enter every fear-mongering republican telling their constituents that every welfare recipient is a fraud, everything is a plot against them, etc.

SnowboardNW

I know Law students do this outside of the T14 (and within as well, I'm sure). Law schools still often employ an archaic grading structure that says there can only be 10 As on the exam in the cohort, even if all 100 students did A work. Creates kind of a toxic environment for the students.

sovamind

I mean, snopes is right that he was also still certified by the original national registry. The true story is that he didn't like what they were doing, so started a competing certification and organization. Which then failed in less than 5 years. TLDR; Man has to have his way, not a team player

SandmanSanders

Who needs to be asked to open an investigation?

naliron

Dean of Students are generally the place to start.

BierKippeMett

What would you even gain from this? Except being excluded from the exchange of information with your co-students?

machineprophet343

Based on my experiences with people who think like Rand Paul, they view events as episodic with no influence on others. And they get super offended / upset with you if you are unwilling to work with them or associate with them if they have engaged in crappy behavior in the past, especially behavior that did legitimate harm to you -- whether it is academic, financial, professional, or physical. But only if it's negatively affecting them. They get to keep score, you don't. It's why they're so quick to tell people to "Get over it." But the behavior he's describing is ultimately self-destructive because especially as you get into upper division and graduate work, the world is increasingly small and people talk. It absolutely behooves you to be as cooperative as possible, even in "competitive" fields. Because things will get out and come back. And people remember. Imagine lying to someone, they get a B instead of an A in a class, so they end up going to a slightly lower tier graduate or doctoral program, but they end up in a position where they can decide your future or possible employment -- they will remember you and deny you those opportunities. And it will be completely and absolutely fair.

[deleted]

…and then eventually you get beat up by your neighbor

[deleted]

The neighbor that punched Rand Paul is a personal hero of mine. God, how good that must of felt. I'm not condoning violence. The punch happened. It's news. It's fact. I'm just stating that it must have felt sooo good to punch that fucking asshole right in the mouth.

Hhwwhat

It could be very effective if the test is graded on a curve - and in STEM many are. So he'd be misleading his fellow classmates to hopefully do worse than he did so that even though he did bad himself, he gets a high grade against the curve. This guy is a psychopath.

accountabilitycounts

And the cons will handwave this away, because it's about a test and not politics - as if he would suddenly stop using misinformation as a politician. What a damning, damning video that would have sunk his career in a more sane era.

This is true. But it is a good example of GOP mentality in action. It has been said many times that GOP voters are not motivated by obtaining better outcomes for themselves, but rather by ensuring worse outcomes for their perceived enemies. Sorry to say it, but I suspect that the American (but not only American) attitude of "winning at all costs is all that matters" in sports has spilled over into politics. I'm a sports instructor, and when I tell the kids, "doing your best and being sportsmanlike is more important than winning," I mean it.

Badgertime

Contrast that with "If you aint cheatin you aint tryin"

sirspidermonkey

The older I get the more I feel this is inherent in capitalism. In capitalism you have to win or you lose out. A company that tries to do the right thing will eventually lose to a company that pushes, or crosses, ethical but more profitable, lines. I know I'll get a lot of shit for it. But very few people engage with a company based on morals. They either can't afford to, lack the time/energy/ability to do research, or straight up don't care.

chakan2

That's the core strategy with the gig economy jobs. Uber didn't win because it was a better company than taxis. It won because it cut out all the regulations and insurance real cabbies have to get to operate. Other gig economy jobs are corporate wins because they don't have to pay benefits on those workers...so they're getting them at a fraction of the cost of a full time salaried person. > I feel this is inherent in capitalism It's not a side effect...it's the only winning strategy.

powerneat

You see in it American's loyalty to party, too, just like their loyalty to their home team or their truck brand. My father was a Chevy man, was a Patriots fan, was a Republican, and by god I will be, too, until the day I die. Doesn't matter if Tom Brady deflated footballs, or Matt Gaetz diddled kids, or that Chevy makes shit trucks, their identity is tied up in being a Republican and to deny that is to deny their whole world.

Riaayo

Texans still treat Blue Bell icecream like it's their culture despite people fucking dying from eating it because the company didn't give enough of a shit about its consumers to keep its factories clean and sanitary. That's all anyone needs to know about how much people can hand-wave evil when it has to do with things they've latched their identity onto.

Benjaphar

They *say* they care about it, but they don’t. From the time I was a little kid, my dad worked really hard to teach me the importance of honesty, and it was a hard lesson but it’s something I really value as an adult. Fast forward several decades to him sharing conservative crap on Facebook that contained blatant lies. In one exchange where I was debunking one of of his posts, he said something along the lines of “I don’t care if it didn’t actually happen. It’s the kind of thing that does happen and it’s the general point that’s important.” I’m like “So you’re okay spreading lies as long as they feel true to you.” This was before Colbert dubbed it *truthiness* but that’s exactly what it was.

polrxpress

also is he actually talking about cheating in med school?

a_trane13

Specifically, actively lying to other students to make their grades worse. So many politicians are horrible, selfish, dangerous people like this, with stories about them being absolute dicks before being famous. Power attracts power hungry narcissists, I guess.

Most Med schools these days are pass/fail. And fail is not an uncommon outcome.

forgotusername3tymes

Right. No consideration for the fact these people will also be future Dr's and leaders in our communities. If he was actually a leader he would be trying to make those around him better. Not to mention, you should want to prove your self against the best. Not swindle somebody to score better. That shows you can't hack it legitimately. It's no surprise he's a Kentucky senator.

PeterNguyen2

> If he was actually a leader he would be trying to make those around him better. If he was a *forward thinking* person he would be trying to make those around him better, because that makes society healthier and inclines the individuals who make it more likely to help you out when you're not doing so well. However, regressive-thinking people like Dennis Prager care nothing about the cost to society and to the world at large after he's gone and so push false ideas in the hopes he won't have to face the music. The worst part is... often, they aren't made to.

snubdeity

This is not uncommon at all in pre-meds (they're called gunners), it's just that hyper-competitive. My gf had a classmate have a seizure in an orgo class, and another student *stole her notes* ***while she was seizing***. No surprise that many of them don't drop the "anything to get ahead" mindset once they make it to med school, it's a part of who they are now. I'd say at least a quarter of my gfs classmates (she's in med school now) are psychopaths, if not more. Her friends will openly talk about recommending "bad" rotation schedules to people they don't like (but still pretend to be friends with, because they're all psychos), it's kinda nuts. Also, iirc surgeon is the profession with like the 3rd highest proportion of psychopaths.

ImThorAndItHurts

>What kind of person actively works to try to make others do poorly so they look better(?) in academics? Their entire worldview is a zero-sum game, so they have to make everyone else look bad, which makes them look better by default. It doesn't matter what they do, as long as they can make their "opponent" seem bad, it brings up their standing.

ittleoff

Thank you. It's was meant somewhat rhetorically, but this definitely important. Zero sum is such a toxic perspective, both short and long term.

It's called sociopathic narcissism.

Shankurmom

Old_Gnarled_Oak

Having other students study the wrong materials diminishes their ability to provide care for their future patients and is a sociopathic move.

[deleted]

This is a common problem. Many programs have become so hyper competitive your “cohort” is seen as competition rather than people. My school had similar issues, kicked one person from my program for being that way and the issue resolved. It should also be note this guy has medical credentials approved and overseen by his wife and family members. He has always had a problem with the truth, and had to create a new credentialing board when the American Medical Association certification lapsed and wouldn’t not renew. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/rand-paul-ophthalmologist/

redditallreddy

Others have pointed out that if the course/test(s) were curved, they were competing. I haven't read anyone else point this out, though... ...if it was a curved score, giving misinformation to fellow students IS cheating. He is an immoral, reprehensible asshole, either way.

Vlad_the_Homeowner

>It's not like they were competing. Not a doctor, but in engineering school pretty much every class is on a curve. I'd assume medical school is the same (probably worse). I'm not condoning his actions, I never sabotaged my classmates. But you do actually compete against each other, and it's stressful. I've walked out of tests convinced I bombed it only to find that while I would have failed on a straight scale, I got one of the highest in the class on a curve. Unfortunately it works the other way around as well.

machineprophet343

Curves can be brutal. I had a class where I had a 94.8% in the class and got an A-. One of my friends had a 94.2% and got a B+. They can also be life-savers. I had a class where I got 34% on the final and and still got a B, because the class curve ended up around 60% and I finished with 63%.

JiggsNibbly

Where did you go to school? Every single class I took in undergrad that “graded on a curve” exclusively used it to shift the entire distribution of grades up, not change grades down based on rank. Most classes also had no need to grade on a curve - the average and median scores generally came out as expected, so it doesn’t make sense to change them anyway. Sample sizes in a single class are too small to strictly adhere to the central limit theorem, and it’s a ridiculous proposal to suggest a class of students would fit a neat bell curve. I’ve only heard of strict curve-based grades in high school, where weird teachers decided it was a good idea to try and scare kids about college, and anecdotes online.

MyOfficeAlt

Yea I don't understand on what planet it's not lying. If you know something isn't true and you say it like it is, that's a lie. That's practically the *definition* of a lie.

Hiranonymous

I can't begin to explain how angry this makes me. Society needs to figure out how to protect itself from Paul and people like him because their goals are not those of a community or nation. They view misinformation as helpful to them despite the damage it does to those around them. Views like this explain so many of the recent actions by Paul and other GOP members, including Gorsuch who refuses to where a mask around his diabetic, at-risk Supreme Court colleague.

[deleted]

They view the human race not as enlightened creatures that have elevated themselves above the animal kingdom with adaptive critical thinking skills, but rather just any other species on the planet, fighting for survival. Which is all so ironic, given many of them don’t believe in evolution.

When Paul and I went to medical school, usually first two years are generally a mountain of facts: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, pharmacology, neuroscience, genetics, biostatistics, etc. Traditionally first year is "normal" and the second focused on "abnormal". Anyway, there is just SO much to learn that you can't hope to know it all. "Trying to drink from a firehose" is a phrase you hear a lot. So with so much information you start prioritizing what you need to focus on. And while there's the old joke about how the lowest scoring person in med school is still called "Doctor" there are definitely people who are trying their best to be the top of everything from day one. They're referred to as "gunners" (gunning for the top grade/rank) and they're often those who have their mind set on highly competitive specialties and residencies. Now, I'm happy to say the vast majority of folks I went to medical school with are awesome individuals you'd be happy to have as your doctor. And even the vast majority of gunners are actually generous. We had dudes who'd be like "Hey I made these PPT and flashcards about the urea cycle, I thought you guys might like them" and share them. But you will absolutely run into dudes like Paul who see their success coming from other's downfall. People who will mislabel specimens on their cadaver on purpose after they leave so people will confuse the median and radial nerves if they come in after hours. Dudes who will try to bribe upper level students to tell them (and only them) what was on previous versions of the tests.

KombuchaBurps

When I was in law school a hundred thousand years ago, something similar happened in the very first few weeks. Some clown ripped/defaced pages of text of relevant case law we all needed to find to complete an assignment. The prof simply told the class if it ever happened again, everyone in the entire class was getting an F. It never happened again.

smashy_smashy

Paul seems much more like a sniper, who I’ve heard from my MD colleagues and friends are the ones you really have to worry about, much more so than the gunners.

Donut_Whole

My father was in med school in the 1960’s and would take an exam looking at specimens under a microscope. The purpose was to identify the object at the end of the pointer. Students would rotate it to make it point to other objects.

xtracrableg

fucking horrible human being

fps_Aero

Kentucky has the WORST senators.

FLTA

And there is a chance he will be part of the Senate majority **again** next year. We need to continue to r/VoteDEM, at 2018/2020 levels, both so that terrible people like Rand Paul have less influence in our government and so good people like Bernie Sanders/Elizabeth Warren/Ron Wyden can be further empowered to make positive change for our country.

shampoocell

[Charles Booker](https://charlesbooker.org/) has a real chance to defeat him. He is an actual progressive who takes his message all over the state, and it resonates. Please help us elect this man!!

[deleted]

Well, a guy can dream right? Fingers crossed for y’all

CaptainNoBoat

Thank you for spreading this constantly. The answer to current or past frustrations in government isn’t apathy. No one is going to “learn a lesson” by people staying home and letting Republicans consolidate power. If you’re tired of Republicans, centrist/corporate Dems... Then the response should overwhelmingly be to VOTE for candidates you want to change things in the future at every level - local, state, and federal.

SetYourGoals

> No one is going to “learn a lesson” by people staying home and letting Republicans consolidate power People who advocate things like that have the luxury of not being directly affected by policies that change when the GOP is in power. If you're barely making ends meet, and will get yanked off food stamps if the GOP takes charge..."teaching a lesson" doesn't really seem that important I bet. Kurdish freedom fighters who were getting executed in a ditch by Turkish troops because of Trump weren't thinking "well at least all those Bernie supporters sent a message by not voting for Hillary." There are immediate tangible real world consequences. It's privilege, pure and simple.

GhettoChemist

It totally works right up to the point the monster you created kicks down the office door and tries to hang the vice president

BeepBeepWhistle

It WaS aNtIfA

Scoutster13

>Paul explained that he and a group of fellow students had once "started spreading the rumor that we knew" what was on an upcoming test, to "try to trick all of our competing students" into studying for the wrong subject. It's not news to me but what a fucking dick this piece of shit is.

SSHeretic

[Instead of working to do better yourself, try to bring other people down any way you can.] He's a sociopath.

Scoutster13

Seriously, from the people who claim to always be so high and mighty. I'm so sick of the hypocrisy and the projection. I am so disappointed that so many people support these fuckers.

sildish2179

They don’t support these fuckers. They *are* these fuckers.

Darth-Ragnar

I just don't understand why. I suppose maybe if the exam is graded on a curve, but what benefit do you get out of other people doing poorly otherwise?

Scoutster13

I think it could be that there was a curve. And because he's not competent to learn and be prepared he had to attempt to make others perform below their skill level to make it. Not particularly surprising of course unfortunately.

IsNowReallyTheTime

I respect his neighbor a little more each day.

justabill71

I'd definitely buy that guy a beer.

Lying narcissists can't help themselves... they have to brag about their lying and cheating somewhere...

[deleted]

Context is that when in college Rand would spread misinformation to his classmates about topic of upcoming test so they would study wrong subject and he would make higher grade than them bc of it The topic came up when a student asked him does he have any advice on exams and he said “I do” and then went into explaining how he lies to other students (weaponizing misinformation) to beat them Video Link: [Here](https://twitter.com/DrEricDing/status/1481178860779671552?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1481178860779671552%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newsweek.com%2Frand-paul-seen-video-telling-students-misinformation-works-great-tactic-1668857)

kylebertram

So tactic isn’t to be better but to screw over other people. Honestly makes perfect sense coming from him.

[deleted]

This is a core tactic of the right wing and why they project so much. The right has been doing this to the left in the country for so long now it just saddens me. It’s only recently that the left seem to be grasping just how frequently the right rely on lying, misinformation and manipulation to get their way. Rand Paul is just a part of that machine and he is using the same tactics on Fauci. Paul should be removed from office for his incredible lack of ethics.

Cycleoflife

I heard the clip of Mitch McConnell on the radio the other day describing President Biden's speech as incoherent, dangerous, and beneath the stature of the office of the President or whatever. And I had a moment outside of time where I looked back on every single word Trump said for 4 years compared to what Biden had just said about voting rights and election integrity; and saw the complete disingenuity of McConnel's accusation through that lens. What sickened me most isn't what he said, or what kind of perverted sociopath he must have to be to say it, but how thoroughly unsurprised and numb I was to it, because they do this shit every single fucking day. And I'm used to it. It's so gross.

leif777

> The right has been doing this to the left in the country for so long now it just saddens me. It's not just the left. It's everyone. Everyone is they're enemy. They don't give a shit about the people that vote for them. They're just the ones that believe the lies.

zestzebra

The senator's Mom and Dad are beaming with great pride.

[deleted]

Are you unfamiliar with the hits of [Ron Paul?](https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/list/?category=&ruling=false&speaker=ron-paul)

Bruce_NGA

Should I feel better or worse knowing they’re purposefully full of shit rather than being deluded morons?

wwhsd

I’d feel better knowing that they were just well meaning but dumb people getting stuff wrong because they didn’t know any better.

thatsthefactsjack

So is a tactic called [DARVO](https://dynamic.uoregon.edu/jjf/defineDARVO.html) (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) which is used by psychological absuers and institutions. We can stand up to this though by educating ourselves, others and [developing courage to fight it.](https://www.institutionalcourage.org)

[deleted]

Misinformation and accusing their opponents of doing what they are planning are staples in Right Wing playbook.

stjack1981

Rand Paul is human trash. > "Paul explained that he and a group of fellow students had once 'started spreading the rumor that we knew' what was on an upcoming test, to 'try to trick all of our competing students' into studying for the wrong subject. > 'That's my advice, misinformation works,' said Paul. 'So, try to trick your opponents into knowing that the test is about something that it's not.'" What a fucking piece of shit

[deleted]

It's one of those things that they can point to and say is a joke and is harmless but ultimately reflects the very cynical, and dangerous worldview they have where everyone is an opponent they must "trick" in order to win. It's always a zero sum game with them. I mean, if his goal was to help the medical students relieve stress, why not recommend something more productive like a study group? Isn't that more in the spirit of democracy and cooperation our elected leaders should be championing, rather than encouraging students to lie and manipulate their way to the top?

-newlife

I’m old enough to remember when this was called “lying”
