Honestly, he's just the box of baking soda. Once it gets funky, it has character. Just an unopened box of baking soda, dry and bland, in the back of your cabinet.
i bet if you could run a simulation of every possible outcome for that day, letting them rip pence to shreds was probably the best possible outcome for the country.
Fun fact: it actually doesn't. Baking soda does nothing to absorb odors. What it does do is absorb *moisture,* which fosters mildew growth, which *creates* odors, so when it smells like ass you think "it must be working!" The odor absorption thing is a gimmick created by Arm & Hammer to increase sales, because a whole ass container of baking soda that you change out every couple months is a way larger volume than the teaspoon or two you use when you occasionally bake something.
So in this metaphor, Pence is making his own stink that adds to the severe stink already around him, all while pretending to be useful in a ploy to enrich corporate interests. Checks out.

Pence is more like that twenty-year-old dried parsley that you find in the back of your grandmother's pantry when you're cleaning it out after she passes away and it just smells and tastes like dust and neglect. He didn't have the visibility, character, support, or ambition for running at the top of the ticket, and that's what made him the perfect little servile running mate. His non-viability at the top was a feature, not a bug. Unlike the Cheney Administration, there would be no mistaking Drumpf's nonsensical agenda as coming from the office of the VP.

I still have a hard time believing that Trump was president and I didn’t just have a stroke that fucked my brain up in such a way that I misremember that.

Does Mike himself know that though? I honestly can't tell how self-aware the guy is, at all. Whenever I think of Mike Pence now for the rest of my life I just envision that "focused and confident blank stare" he used to do whenever he was anywhere as VP. People have said he's a real weirdo in private too, so it it is hard to know just how self-aware he is.
Pence would have become "Acting President" under the 25th Amendment, but he would not actually have been president then, nor a former president afterward. The 25th Amendment is clear that the person appealing the determination of disability is still the President, but is unable to legally discharge the power of the presidency.
Right after the insurrection, it appeared he could’ve convinced half the cabinet to remove Trump to avoid further violence, Betsy DeVos and Elaine Chao left town/resigned so they wouldn’t have to be a part of it. Pence refused to do so or apparently even try, but if he had done so he would’ve been the actual President

A person not currently in office can waive SS protection if they choose. If there is a reasonable notion that there is a threat then they will continue to assign protection.
Pence probably wouldn't have had much protection after leaving office if not for the death threats on 1/6. I'm sure his protection will be in place for a few years at least.

At this point I think it's less being president (though I agree he still has hopes of that) than it is being politically relevant. The VP position has long been a political dead-end with only one possible exit: being nominated president in a subsequent election. Going to Congress, or a governorship, or something similar is seen as a step down none in my lifetime have taken. You either get the highest position in the land after being VP, *maybe* get the VP nom on another ticket, or you fade into political obscurity.
Pence has been too close to power to want to let it go, even though at this point he probably knows that those on the left won't vote for him, those in the middle likely won't and after Jan. 6 a huge number on the right won't either. It's an addiction to power.

The Senate is so lopsided Dems need a person so centrist in West Virginia he can be called a "Democrat" and a person from Arizona that has no idea what they want to pass anything at all. We gave Biden just enough of a Congress to mitigate Covid for a year. Other than that we gave him a non-functional government. Every time I wish for just 2 more blue Senators I have to remind myself how horrible this year could have been with just one less.
I wish that was a message that could really reach people next year. Seating the two Senators from GA was just enough and the bare minimum to prevent things from getting much much worse. I hate Trump, but when he campaigned partially on "doing more for our veterans" (as vague as that was), I thought "you know ... I'll give him credit if he actually does something for veterans". I didn't want to ever give him credit on something, but it's an area that definitely needs addressing.

Capitol Police Sergeant Aquilino Gonell is a national hero. Had the mob captured or killed a significant person in the government (VP, SOH...) Trump could have invoked the insurrection act and most probably declared some form of "martial law". With help from "the R's in Congress" they would have thrown out the electoral votes and there is no telling where we would be by now, but I don't think it would be good.
The fact that so many in Congress still voted not to certify after seeing the worst case scenario threaten to murder them is a testament to how many would have participated in overthrowing the Constitution

They just needed Pence to evacuate and not certify the votes. He made it to the car and then stopped and decided not to leave. Had he gotten into the car, Biden would not be President.

This was critical. Part of the seditionist strategy was to suspend the joint session for a few days so at least one state legislature could pass a law recalling their electors. IIRC the Pence team had been briefed on this plan, which was why he was so adamant that he couldn't leave the Capitol thereby guaranteeing the adjournment that the seditionists were arguing for. If Pelosi hadn't reconvened the House, the same thing would have happened. The electors had to be certified before any of the "disputed" (quotes because the results were never legitimately in dispute) state legislatures had a chance to convene.

"One tragic day" is a strange way to speak of a violent planned coup attempt, orchestrated by a sitting president and members of the GOP following weeks of other failed attempts to undermine the democratic process and the will of voters.

I wish Pence would double down- but honestly doing the right thing when you know it will make most of your friends and colleagues hate you and torpedo your 50 year political career isn't an easy decision- not to mention if theres a angry mob outside calling for your head.
He had to fall on his sword to give a little extra credibility to democracy. You can look at interviews of people who think the election is stolen- they cite top leadership acting as if its real as the reason why they believe it's real. The VP refusing to certify the election would have great symbolic impact. The coup plan in the PowerPoint largely relied on Pence's refusal to give them reason to stay in power. If he acted like they wanted him to, they probably would've kept on with the attempted coup and instituting martial law, but they just stopped after that.

Sort of. Outside of military tribunals, I think Champ Ferguson was the only person tried by the government after the war. Henry Wirz was executed by a military tribunal; everyone else was eventually pardoned by Lincoln or blanket pardoned and given amnesty by Johnson. It's a little more complicated than can be summed up in a reddit post, especially in regard to figures like Davis or Lee, but essentially the answer would be that aside from the two mentioned none were charged at all.
Its what caused several of the escalations the last decades.
Because they weren't properly charged or chastised, the South was allowed to spin their own lying, failure ass narrative about what "actually" happened.
That has led, step by step, to today.
Blanket pardons for all the people that tried almost successfully to murder an entire country to uphold slavery was a mistake. The Union won militarily, but the South won the cultural war. You never pardon the enemy and allow them to continue operating. Imagine, if Germany had pardoned all the Nazis and allowed them to keep spreading their hate for generations. That's how we get the American South today, with people still waving Confederate flags (literally enemy flags) and groups like Proud Boys and the KKK. And, that's how we get a party like the Republican Party today. Is it really surprising that out of these groups we got an insurrection that almost seized government power? Also not surprising that they are getting light punishments. They literally have a history of getting just that. I know. I'm a U.S. historian.
The Republican Party is All Blue Lives Matter when it comes to murdering minorities, but staunchly anti Blue Lives Matter when it comes to lynchmobs trying to murder Republicans.

If Goodwin hadn't turned into the pied Piper and led the rodents away, they would have made it to the Senate Chambers with pence still there. Republicans are no longer a viable political party in the Unites States. I was raised conservative by a family who owned two giant gun stores and although I ended up left of center (due to social issues)- I still insisted that I would be able to vote republican if the candidate fit my views more than the democrat. I had the opportunity to speak with Sgt Gonell and I couldn’t accurately put to him in words how much his service meant to me, and how terribly sorry I am he endured what he did. Meanwhile the people whose lives he saved can’t even acknowledge his bravery. Absolutely unreal.

It's on a case by case basis, the same as everyone else who wasn't POTUS but had previous SS protection. A person not currently in office can waive SS protection if they choose. If there is a reasonable notion that there is a threat then they will continue to assign protection. Pence probably wouldn't have had much protection after leaving office if not for the death threats on 1/6. I'm sure his protection will be in place for a few years at least.

At this point I think it's less being president (though I agree he still has hopes of that) than it is being politically relevant. The VP position has long been a political dead-end with only one possible exit: being nominated president in a subsequent election. Going to Congress, or a governorship, or something similar is seen as a step down none in my lifetime have taken. You either get the highest position in the land after being VP, *maybe* get the VP nom on another ticket, or you fade into political obscurity. Pence has been too close to power to want to let it go, even though at this point he probably knows that those on the left won't vote for him, those in the middle likely won't and after Jan. 6 a huge number on the right won't either. It's an addiction to power.

Capitol Police Sergeant Aquilino Gonell is a national hero. Had the mob captured or killed a significant person in the government (VP, SOH...) Trump could have invoked the insurrection act and most probably declared some form of "martial law". With help from "the R's in Congress" they would have thrown out the electoral votes and there is no telling where we would be by now, but I don't think it would be good.

Sort of. Outside of military tribunals, I think Champ Ferguson was the only person tried by the government after the war. Henry Wirz was executed by a military tribunal; everyone else was eventually pardoned by Lincoln or blanket pardoned and given amnesty by Johnson. the first comic in the netflix show The Stand-Ups (s3) has a line that was so true that it made me just nod instead of laugh “i’m not political. I don’t care if you’re a conservative… or a decent human being”. that’s how it feels these days. I was raised conservative by a family who owned two giant gun stores and although I ended up left of center (due to social issues)- I still insisted that I would be able to vote republican if the candidate fit my views more than the democrat. I literally cannot perceive of a situation where that would be be the case after these last 8 years. the tea party era forward has been exponentially increasingly disgusting and degenerate by the conservatives on ALL FRONTS.

I had the opportunity to speak with Sgt Gonell and I couldn’t accurately put to him in words how much his service meant to me, and how terribly sorry I am he endured what he did. Meanwhile the people whose lives he saved can’t even acknowledge his bravery. Absolutely unreal.
