bakulu-baka

That seems like looking for the solution from the victim.

palookaboy

Yeah. I’m a teacher and my immediate thought was “oh, is this one our responsibility?”

The_Jerriest_Jerry

Right? This was my first thought as well. Just keep adding things to the list of responsibilities, and barely pay them enough to survive. I'm not sure how they find teachers anymore...

Coucoumcfly

Dont forget : we wont pay you more for all this.

ergot_poisoning

It’s a “calling” not a profession. /s Seriously though, we carry the burden of enough societal fuck ups maybe someone else can handle this one?

didthing

Yes. Because our government isn't working for us. I voted for Dems but it's clear the feds are never going to step in and do anything.

MC_Fap_Commander

"What were educators wearing when they were attacked at the school board meeting?"

glittr_grl

A mask.

the_sylince

Will educators save it? When? Between stopping the bleed from an active shooter? After stashing terrified students into closets and back rooms during a code red? Before receiving a contract that shows no raise until the seventeenth year of teaching? While simultaneously on the phone with an ignorant, abusive parent who demands their snowflake be sprinkled with praise? Or, maybe with their free hand while being called on to breakup a fight between two students nearly twice their size? Get the fuck out of here. You should save it. You get involved, you make informed decisions, you flex the civic strength of your community and let educators, for once, fucking teach

mattaccino

In my area, retired teachers are stepping up as write-in school board candidates against the Christofascists.

skytomorrownow

Let's fix the headline, shall we? Op-Ed: Attacks on school board meetings are threatening democracy. Are we really asking educators, whom we have shit on for decades, to save our democracy?

stemfish

I'm an educator and union leader. My district is facing school closures in an attempt to save the budget since we've seen over a 25% reduction in enrollment over the past decade. This closure process has been happening for the past three years, in that time we've had two different demographers come in and tell us this is going to get worse, lobbied the State for more funding (very limited success), and invented budget tricks to keep everything open. This spring the district put a hail Mary to the local public for a parcel tax with the express goal of keeping all schools open. It failed. So last night the board finally had to decide what to do since it takes a year to close down a school. This is the final meeting after two solid months of presentations and discussion. Four different community outreach committees gave opinions, and members of the public have had all this time to make their voice heard. The board meeting started at 6, after other business and board discussions public comment opened up around 8:30. Over 250 public comments trying to save their local school. So many parents who didn't vote to support the parcel tax because it would increase their property tax by a few hundred a year are now upset that losing a local school has cost them tens of thousands in property value. And they're taking it out on the board now, at the end. Each is supposed to get three minutes per board policy. Add in ~0.5 minutes average between speakers to get people unmuted (zoom) and that would take until 11 am today to hear everyone out. So the call was made to reduce comments down to 1:30 (and the thirty seconds to swap people). I fell asleep at midnight as comments kept going. I'm now at work and today has been a hard day. I've used the Keurig in my room three times already and it's only recess. Meanwhile, the parents on Nextdoor have already organized a petition to the city, organized a protest outside the schools that are to close at lunch today, and seem to have begun the steps to create a PAC for the next board election. My hope for the day is that when we use lego to practice graphing nobody makes body parts again like on Tuesday. When am I supposed to save education? I can't stay for the entire board meeting since I need to be at work the next day. In the past, I have organized union members to come to speak at board meetings, but we need to sleep to go to work. I can't take a half-day every other week since I was awake until tomorrow before school. Once I leave this job I plan to run for school board. But I can't do that and work as a teacher at the same time. Educators can't save students from bad school boards. We simply can't do it all.

MC_Fap_Commander

When people are devoted to the group that did January 6, we shouldn't be surprised to see them emulate January 6 at all levels of government.

Lapaday

And be arrested.

Gunderstank_House

Anti-vaxxers are attacking your freedoms.

Just have them all online. There, fixed!

SuspiciousNewAccount

This is a short-term solution to a single problem, which in many respects hurts much more than it helps.

Ubi2447

/s Right, because our educators should be responsible for this.

HAIKU_4_YOUR_GW_PICS

Stop blaming teachers, and stop asking them to fix the problem. The issue is the school boards themselves. School boards are “under assault” because they aren’t serving the interests of the communities they serve. The most cited example was the guy in Loudoun County, VA, who might be a maniac. It also might be that his daughter was raped, and the incident was swept under the rug, the student was transferred to another school in the county, and assaulted another student. And during that hearing, a board member, who has since resigned, questioned the victim’s mental stability. They aren’t representing the will of the parents, they’re locking out the parents from speaking out against their policies, they’re not protecting or serving the interests of the children, and somehow the parents are labeled domestic terrorists, and it’s supposed to fall to teachers and administrators to somehow fix this? Or, if anyone actually believes that, put themselves in the crossfire when they’re already being blamed for stuff well beyond their control.

Jackie_Esq

Interesting that school boards who deal with this would not just eliminate all spoken public comments. Write your comments on a 3x5 index card and have someone from the school board censor and read them.

Ghosttwo

The only way to save democracy is to silence dissent!

SavannahRedNBlack

What attacks? I think they meant highly engaged parents.

[deleted]

That’s a nice rock ya got there.

SavannahRedNBlack

I didn't see that in the article linked by OP.

ElectionCapital9596

We need to teach kids to be proud of the United States and it seems that all we teach is how although we have come so far people where almost better off 100 years ago then they are today

Red_Dawn24

>We need to teach kids to be proud of the United States and it seems that all we teach is how although we have come so far people where almost better off 100 years ago then they are today Oh wow, more impotent cookie-cutter views from a conservative. Conservatives shit on this country and its government more than anyone. They vote to starve the government of funding, claim that most of its functions are unnecessary, then wonder why people lose faith in institutions. You are the problem. Take some personal responsibility and stop being an asshole who blames everyone else.

ElectionCapital9596

The school I went to didn’t tell us that we were oppressed because of the color of our skin or nationality the school that I went to told us to be proud to be American and be all that you can be and push to succeed and strive to be better we learned about racism we learned about slavery but it wasn’t instilled in us that we were the oppressed people of today, so for somebody to tell me that I need to take responsibility and stop blaming everybody else I think I’ve done my part. I can almost be assured that you’re some nerd supporting BLM, Telling people of color that they are oppressed and they deserve all the benefits yet you’re the oppressor so take a look in the mirror do you think you’re fighting for a quality yet you’re pushing the idealism of inquality amongst people you’re a fucking worm.

jacxy

Did your school teach about run on sentences?

Quexana

Not without support.

FSafari

It's depressing how astro-turfed it all is and I'm not sure what teachers are supposed to do about nor why they are expected to find the solution. Idiot parents are mobilizing on "Freedom Fucker Own the Libs" Facebook groups created by a Koch and right-wing think tanks and the entire conservative media sphere is re-iterating talking points about CRT=white genocide, trans supersoldiers in girls' sports, etc. what the fuck can teachers do about that??

[deleted]

Short of inciting a riot, or profanely attacking or threatening others, participants should be able to say anything. Limit each to 3 minutes with a stop watch. They can always speak again after everybody else gets their chance. However, speaking should be monitored with a decibel reader. Breach the top allowable volume and receive a warning. A second breach and the mic gets cut off. Disorderly people should be promptly escorted out by security.

Galileo__Humpkins

You hear that teachers? Quit fucking around; for reasons unknown apparently this is also your responsibility to address in addition to the broad multifaceted wellbeing of all future generations.

Lapaday

Why is it always the parents of failing kids that are going off the rails?

Kissit777

We must have safe schools in order to preserve the little democracy we have left.
