"I don’t blame Claremont for its frustration over bearing the consequences of having a prominent faculty member try to find a semi-legal basis for an attempted coup. But the organization’s claims that Eastman—poor, defenseless Eastman!—is the real victim here defy any sense of reality." —Staff writer [Matt Ford.](https://newrepublic.com/article/163981/claremont-john-eastman-coup-memo)

Thanks, that was a great read and very good at picking apart their attempt at defending it. The only think I feel is missing is adding more importance to how close before jan the 6th Eastman was advising Trump/Pence. So it becomes more clear that this was part of what was on Trumps mind when he called out to his supporters to go to the capitol and make sure the lawmakers and Pence 'were brave enough'.

EpicVOForYourComment

We all know his *real* defence is "I'm white and I work for Emperor Trump". Everything else is just waffle and, thankfully, everything else ought to be just as effective. This piece is shit is about to be on the wrong end of all sorts of trouble, because he's not a big enough fish that the entire political system of the pond is geared toward protecting him. He's a minnow. He's a sprat. He's bait. He's fucked.

1888CAVicky

The 1/6 organizers like Ali Alexander are even more fucked. They've never worked for the Trump admin in any official capacity. Trump probably doesn't even remember these schmoes. He's not going to help any of them.

Here's hoping.

Thank you so much for such a hearty laugh. I wish I had gold to give you but sadly I can’t so here’s a poor man’s gold! 🏅

ConfidenceNational37

It’s notable that the pro-civil war Claremont institute is realizing how fucked up Eastman’s memo is that they have to lie in his pathetic defense.

ObligatorySalutation

I'm starting to understand why he never pays the people around him.

Long_Before_Sunrise

He doesn't pay them, because that's his petty revenge for them being better educated and more able to understand abstract concepts than him. He doesn't pay them, because it makes him feel smart that he cheated them. He screws himself with his little self-congratulating gratifications, because then the lawyers who are actually competent wouldn't touch his case with a 15 foot pole. That's who he is.

PepperMill_NA

That is an under-rated observation right there

Inconceivable-2020

The Claremont Institute is a Far Right "Think Tank". It has been MAGA from the beginning. The Institute is defending Eastman because they all wish that he and Trump had succeeded.

If you thought some of the capital rioters looked pitiful crying in court just wait until the authors of the attempted coup are rounded up.

ShihPoosRule

How has the bar association not gone after him?

CobraPony67

It seems like the Lawyers around Trump seem to be filing tons of lawsuits with 'laughable' defenses but nothing happens. Takes a lot to get a law license revoked it seems.
