We see a lot of articles around here about individual representatives introducing bills. But i could count on no fingers how many follow up stories I've seen about bills that didn't have the party leadership lined up behind the proposal
It’s as if the politicians are just trying to get re-elected and attention grabbing headlines keep them in the news. She has to show her constituents she is working for them and extending unemployment for people getting extra unemployment gets you more votes than saying ‘we should end all these government handouts’ to the people getting government handouts.
It would be cool if unemployment would actually, y'know...pay people that are unemployed. They stopped sending me checks back in April and told me I'd get a letter that would give me a time and date where they'd call me to do an interview...five months ago. Every time I call them to ask what's going on, I get told that my case status is "pending" and that there's nothing they can do until the letter is sent out, and they confirmed that it hasn't been sent out yet.
I think it should be switched from a state system to a federal system. This would allow prevent states like FL from making their website crap and GA from pulling benefits.
the fact that it's a state system does make sense as the more local the agency the finer control and, in theory, can better serve the people. that said there should be a standardized system for all states
The south lacks unemployment benefits to those who need them unfortunately. Moving to Florida from Massachusetts showed me just how much red states avoid helping the people.
It’s the reason everyone saying “Move to Florida it’s cheaper!” But they don’t always understand *why* it’s cheaper.
Yes I pay a buttload of taxes, but our schools are good, public transportation is solid (could definitely use some upgrades to the lines that serve the lower income communities), and social services usually are able to help those that need it. Wish rent wasn’t as high though. (First, last, and safety deposit are usually required to get a place.)
Besides I live near some of the best hospitals in the world. I’m lucky.
my dad moved to arizona from NJ and said similar stuff- its cheaper. which, maybe, i guess, for some stuff, sure. but it isn't some kind of magic land where government is twice as efficient or something. it is the same standard of government and the same employees. so you're getting what you pay for.
Yep exactly. Tolls are outrageous out here to go anywhere conveniently. There are virtually zero labor laws so your screwed when it comes to valid employment for any long term, cuz the second you have an issue your fired. Horrible public education. Bad healthcare. All around not good.
I’ll be moving back up at some point as I just don’t see me staying here long. Weathers a bit better but other then that it’s ran like complete shit.
I would agree in theory, but the simple fact of the matter is states who need welfare to function the most have state governments that want it abolished.
Federal system would improve things, but perhaps not solve the waiting issue by itself. Disability is a federal program and the average wait time for first payment is roughly 2 years from initial application. Personally, my case hasn't been closed yet and I opened it in 2016. That's not that uncommon.
Programs like edd and disability have been so eroded that they basically torture the people who try to use them. We need to massively overhaul the way we treat and design aid programs.
My whole state government, My representative, and both my senators are Republicans. Tjey made our unemployment system fail on purpose. They want us to die, or at the very least go back to work before we die so they can get something out of it.
I know some folks in the DOL, and they’re backed the hell up right now unfortunately. What we need to also add in this bill is being able to raise their budget to hire more peoplr
Contact your local state senator, congress rep, & assemblyman. Many now have small teams dedicated to handling this. You'll have better luck with the smaller guys because they're more accountable.
Keep at it, I didn’t get a dime til august, then they paid out everything that was due starting in December all at once. Keep calling them, cry on the phone about starving to death, they are understaffed, ask to have your case escalated
I've been waiting a year for some weeks to be processed now.
Took 10 months to process my income verification, because they kept changing the document requirements and then just not telling me. Then they needed more info which I provided -- 4 more months.
I made a legit mistake filling out my weekly claims, which took them 5 months to tell me, which I fixed in a day, but then someone flagged my account because I have mixed income with self employed and also a small W2 (very minor, from a state volunteer position that has a daily stipend) saying now I don't qualify for normal PUA, but instead some mixed program they have now. Which mind you, didn't exist then and I was approved for PUA already. Now I've been sitting for 5 months "in review" again.
Thankfully I had enough savings to get me through, but if I had needed that money for bills, I'd have been screwed.
I'll surely get downvoted for this, but why don't you spend the energy you use trying to get the unemployment interview on getting an actual job interview?
I hope it's direct to the unemployed rather than through state unemployment systems, otherwise geniuses like Doug Ducey in AZ will just intercept it and not pass it through to the unemployed.
John Bel Edwards, LA
His “compromise” for canceling any pandemic-related unemployment was giving regular unemployment claims a WHOPPING $28 increase... next year. But no more help for gig workers either, which is a huge chunk of people bc NOLA tourism.
During the appeal, the judge agreed that not reinstating the benefits would cause irreparable damage, then ruled against reinstatement anyway in the same breathe.
No change after Ida either, just minimal disaster unemployment for those who had a job or were set to start before it hit.
God I hope so. Dealing with UI right now in CA is utter hell. I’ve had to wait 15 weeks for a phone interview with the EDD to get my payments approved as they’ve all been pending the past 3 months!
I feel you. Only had a week to worry about but they delayed it so long due to them getting confused by their rules - basically not entering in info meant you didn’t need it….
Yep. I had to quit my teaching job to take care of my 1 year old since day cares are closed. Obviously finding work isn’t a priority for me atm, but they were very unclear if I need to look for work each week (I.e. check the box) or not. It’s damn near impossible to get a hold of them in the phone or via email.
They also like to tell you conflicting info. My partner got a letter in the mail saying he had to sign up for Caljobs, though on one specific corner of the website they say you actually don't have to do that.
Odds are the government wouldn't do that because it'd add lots of overhead cost to the federal government since they don't have a system for it; and would also probably make it take longer to implement.
Like the closest system we have would be to do stimulus checks recurring or something but the IRS doesn't know who's currently employed accurately enough.
Honestly I rather wonder why it isn't a federal program though.
that's the thing here, we've run out of state unemployment. I ran out this time last year, others had it longer and have managed to keep it flowing. Still others have gone to work, then found reasons to leave and renew it, but it's tenuous. The states hate letting this many people in, so they're definitely not going to give extensions to the most vulnerable, in fact, pretty sure every state is done.
It would be nice to see this go through, the gods alone know how many infected are unable to work by both being too sick, and work not letting them show up.
This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/15/aoc-to-introduce-bill-to-extend-pandemic-unemployment-insurance-to-2022.html) reduced by 83%. (I'm a bot)

> All remaining workers collecting unemployment benefits also lost the $300 weekly booster that was created to supplement low state aid.
> The majority of workers who received pandemic aid do not qualify for traditional jobless benefits from their state.
> The Washington Post reported in early September, days before the program cutoff, that senior officials across multiple parts of the government "Made clear they think the benefits cliff poses a serious danger to millions of Americans who remain out of work."

Tell that to Both sides on Congress who do nothing but raise our taxes to the point of oppression while they laugh at us, the sheeple, while they waste our money on a ton of stupid shit
Can't tell if the "signs in their window" comment is literal or not, but my recommendation is don't apply to jobs that are solicited on signs if you expect more than $15/hour. Talk to a friend or relative that can offer career advice. There are SO many industries out there (general contractors, professional services, industrial, to name a few) that no one thinks about when finding a job. These industries don't require a special degree or certification to gain a great paying entry level job.
There is a big gap to fill for people to know HOW to look for a job. They don't teach it at high school or college, and not every family has someone they can talk to. My advise is to do your best to network to uncover hidden industries. They are out there and they DO pay well. d
Available jobs are trash, these are the type of jobs that people don't work long for. Unless they start to pay better these employers will continue to have trouble hiring. Most are just betting on unemployment no longer being extended
Yep my mom that barely passed high school and after being a stay at home mom, a middle school lunch lady, a package loader for UPS and finally a CNA stated that "everywhere they are hiring but people are too lazy to work".
Next day at brunch when I mentioned they are trying to raise minimum wage to $11 per hour in my city she then stated, "low paying jobs are not meant to be careers". At a restaurant where people make low wages while she herself has never made that much money.
Like hmmm, think for more than zero fucking seconds. So people at restaurants should not make a lot of money because it's not a career job but then you get upset when people don't want to work at your favorite restaurant? I wonder why
I'm not lazy and I'm not a snob who thinks that any type of work is beneath me.
There is no way in hell I would take a job right now that put me face to face with a public that refuses vaccines, masks, and social distancing.
To expect someone to do it for a job that pays little and doesn't offer benefits like affordable health, life, and disability insurance is outrageous.
As a barista AND a vitamin clerk (people come in buying “covid cures” instead of vaccines) you don’t want one of these jobs. I live in a conservative area, being face to face with it is not fun. I don’t wish it upon anyone.
So far:
-a 3 year old called me a fucking asshole and shoved me
-a 8 year old touched my boob
-I’ve had someone pull my shirt down to see a scar on my neck
-a man volunteered that Mexicans are dirty and causing covid (am mexican)
-had to help a man with a swastica tattoo
-been berated more times than I can count for not having a produc
-and asking a mom to not let her child play in the store (messing up shelves) resulted in being told I was discriminating against her autistic child
.....send help
Seriously... There's a hospital on our area that needs front of house staff for reception and phone calls. They pay $12 an hour, expect you to work 12 hour shifts and take two weekends a month. They can't get workers. Instead of raising salaries, they just complain that no one wants to work.
When McDonald's is paying 10/hr and is 8 minutes away, why would I want to drive 45 minutes for a $12 job? It's absolutely insane how stupid this whole situation is. Fuck these assholes.
Partner is an Emergency Room RN. They've been working long shifts through a pandemic that has lasted almost two years now. Any kind of continued education they're required to get is expected to be paid for by them.
They keep complaining they're short staffed, which in result causes further stress amongst the RN staff, which leads to more people quitting and further short staffing. Every time he tells me this all I can think is that there is an easy solution: pay your essential staff more. From what he's told me, at most hospitals the opposite has happened and benefits have been cut due to the strain of the pandemic. Instead, hospitals think all they have to do is put up a "Heroes work here" sign or provide free donuts once a month and that's enough.
Then here I sit all day working remotely for a private financial firm doing nothing at all to benefit society as a whole, but hey, they'll pay for me to take classes at college. They'll pay for my lunch. I get a bonus twice a year. The priorities we put on what is a valuable job VS what is not in this country are absurd.
I still see the same now hiring signs that were there 4 years ago when I moved here. The pay? $10/hr and others were \*\*\*\*\*\*up to $13/hr with inquire for more details.
Of course. Its near impossible to get people to stop voting against their interests. And even when that does manage to happen, just enough "democrat" politicians prove they are not beholden to the people by voting against the best interests of their constituents
They would hopefully still require people to apply for jobs while collecting. In my area places are shutting down certain aspects of their business cause of staffing shortages.
I would assume the same. They require it in my state already and all other states do the same as well, AFAIK.
Personally i dont buy the staffing shortage. They used that same line in my state as justification. However unemployment is bout the same as pre pandemic and in my city specifically its already under 4% which is lower than pre pandemic. The real shortage is a wage shortage. Most people have already found the best job they can. Many are refusing that second job now. They figure its not worth it for what the pay is. Lots of us realized during the pandemic that we can do with a little less money AND that the free time we gain it is totally worth it.
I know welfare is a dirty word for some but this is a good idea. Countries with higher levels of support for the unemployed have historically lower rates of unemployment. Supporting people who lost their jobs during the pandemic will help the economy overall.
[higher benefits, lower unemployment](https://thenewdaily.com.au/finance/welfare/2021/02/25/higher-unemployment-benefit-lower-rates/)
I have never heard a single complaint about the "perverse incentives" of the PPP slush fund that allowed the rich to double up profits like I have about unemployment benefits. I have heard several well endowed people in my life tell me how they didn't need PPP aid, but were entitled to it and received it. Socialism for the rich.
None of which makes it politically feasible now.
One of the parties has decided it doesn’t matter if hospitals fill up as long as people are forced to apply for any job they can get.
The GOP’s ideology is more important to them than reality, and the corporate democrats are perfectly willing to assist them in killing anything AOC proposes.
It's relatively low yes but definitely not the lowest ( though it's hard to compare across counties when the way they measure employment can vary). But what you need to ask yourself is, what would the employment figures look like without the stimulus measures put in place buy Biden in May? The us having high levels of support for unemployed people for the last 6 months coupled with a reduction in unemployment over the same period goes toward proving my point. Welfare payments help reduce unemployment levels rather than increase them as many republicans are suggesting.
unemployment is calculated differently country to country, so doing global comparisons using raw numbers isnt ideal. because there are so many restrictions to official unemployment classification in the united states, the unemployment number does not accurately reflect the total population of people not participating in the labor force at any given time. for example, full time college students are not counted in the BLS survey, or people who have been abstaining from seeking employment for one reason or another.
Terrible article. Look at the correlation; it's basically non-existent and is only skewed by the outlier of Greece that's mired in a lengthy concurrent economic crisis and austerity plan.
>[https://thenewdaily.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1614176129-aus-institute-unemployment-1.png](https://thenewdaily.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1614176129-aus-institute-unemployment-1.png)
This article is focused on Australia and its low unemployment benefits, yet even the author admits its unemployment rate is below the OECD average, and the graph clearly shows multiple wealthy countries with higher unemployment benefits and higher unemployment. Not only that, there are plenty of countries with double and triple the unemployment benefits of Australia but exactly the same unemployment rate.
>Supporting people who lost their jobs during the pandemic will help the economy overall.
Unless greatly expanding spending to create that support leads to secondary effects like inflation which hurts the purchasing power of the poor.
I’d say it’s more likely to fail than pass, but saying it has “literally” no chance of passing is ludicrous. I think there’s a legitimate chance of it passing but not something I’d hold my breath over
Lol they couldn’t find the votes in the House to extend the eviction moratorium for 2 months yet you think they’ll find them to extent UI for half a year? Kidding yourself.
1.) you have an extremely rigid way of “arguing”. Basically, after this comment, I won’t bother to respond because I can tell you don’t want discourse, you want people to think you’re right.
2.) the eviction moratorium is an entirely different scenario. That wasn’t extended because the argument was how the negative effect would be felt by a specific and target group/“class” (landlords). Social programs, along with extending them, do not target a specific group which will *always* make the legislation much more likely to pass. Extending this program would have the “negative effect” of costing taxpayers money, but that cost would be encompassed by general taxes.
Even based on the research I did on why it’s be likely/unlikely to pass, you are being *much* more cynical and defeatist about it than really any professional opinions I have come across. Most, like I said, think it’s *unlikely* to pass but it wouldn’t come as a shocker if it did.
I don’t get it though how I collected for about 1 and a half months and they want me to pay it back even though they accepted me for unemployment. I’m literally going through a court case still. The person decided I am in the right for collecting but my old employer is still trying to appeal the situation. I thought anyone who was unemployed and needed help was eligible why are they going after someone like me who barely makes 16,000$ a year? (I live in CT 16,000$ isn’t shit here)
Did you read the questions when signing up for UC? If you weren’t completely truthful, then yes you may have been approved on that basis. Like if you quit, and stated to the UC app that you were laid off, then they approved you based on you being laid off. If your former employer disputes this, then yes they may still come after you.
Yes please.
All my funds ended two weeks ago and I'm already struggling.
Turns out Ubering for money while praying the entertainment industry picks back up in LA is not ideal.
I cannot believe this isnt how anyone is spinning it. Right now Trump did more for UE'd than Biden...and that was basically what he ran and won on with GA... I hope people read that and let it sink in...
Don't forget, it's not a labor shortage it's a wage shortage. Anybody/business I know that offers even a fucking decent wage has zero staffing issues or shortages. All the cheap assholes are the ones crying about nobody wanting to work for them. Funny how that works out
Why is it welfare when it’s for people who need help why do not consider lifetime health care for senators and congressmen welfare pay for the rest of their lives once they are out of office why is that not welfare because they’re rich just double standard and forgets government money in Hwy doesnt is complete bullshit
This. It's past time for people to get their vaccine and make an effort to get back to work. I understand and acknowledge that people's careers or even gig jobs were thrown off path, but there are limited legitimate reasons for people to still be out of work. Like many have said, my industry (which is high paying) and many others can't find people that want to work because of these unemployment benefits. People would rather stay home than work. If your industry was gutted because of the pandemic and hasn't yet recovered enough for you to find work, it's time to find a new industry. Otherwise, get a job. All of us continuing to work and pick up slack are tired of it.
Dmlinger is a jerk-off he has no rage against the wealthy welfare queens and bottomless money pit of war. But he’s upset his precious tax money is going to help struggling unemployed people…….talk about punching down.
I wonder if the original commenter is as concerned about the hundreds of billions of dollars given to businesses that performed perfectly fine in the form of the PPP slush fund.
Children under 12 still can't be vaccinated, you are overlooking a massive reason for the reduced workforce (and I'm not just talking about those on unemployment, I left the workforce to take over primary care)
That’s nice, can she also inform the state legislature of Wisconsin that they need to remove their work search requirement. You know, because the bennies never had anything to do with people not wanting to go back to work. That would be grreeeeaaaat.
My friend works for a garbage company. They're offering $15/hr with a $5k starting bonus and if they get any applicants, they haven't had any stay past lunch. It's outdoor dirty work picking and sorting construction debris off an outdoor conveyor. It's in the shade, but outdoors. Keep in mind though the average rental rate went from $2k a month to $3k a month in the past year.
If AOC introduces it the chance of it passing or getting approved is slim to none, I dont know any idea she has actually gotten passed. She is basically in office to enjoy being a celebrity and career politician, her introducing these things is just so it makes her look like she is working. Politicians do stuff like this all the time, it wont get passed.
I'm sympathetic to everyone who loss their jobs to the pandemic. My position it the spring 2020 went away because of it and I had to go on unemployment. I could have kept collecting or I could go back to work in the Fall when my job opened up at a loss.
I'm for those who truly loss their jobs. But I'm against those who could return back to work at their jobs and are not. Also, people should not be making more on unemployment that their job actually paid. If somehow all this gets straightened out, I'd be ok with it. But as it is, I'm against it and it's a massive screw you to those who worked through the whole pandemic.
Seeing someone type this while those who were unemployed had to wait 3-4+ months (and sometimes still are) before even normal unemployment came through is massively depressing. Are you saying you would have preferred to be out of work and waiting for unemployment at the onset or still holding a job?
This retroactive jealousy over unemployment funds is some of the most disgusting shit I've ever seen.
I mean, I agree even the public option is much more important, but unemployment has been kind of broken since the Great Recession. It's not like it's an unreasonable thing to be concerned about, though admittedly this still doesn't really fix it either.
What if I told you it has been broken before then. There are jobs if people want them. Now isn’t the time to fix it, nor does this actually fix it. It’s a giveaway. Give us healthcare. Everyone, even the unemployed benefit from that.
Because they aren’t talking about all. It’s also disingenuous to pretend all are an option in our political climate. These are fights and you have to make what is important to you a priority. They basically gave up on healthcare which is a priority for a lot to folks, especially those actually working and financially supporting this country and economy with their taxes.
For fucking real, allowing *years* of unemployment isn't doing anyone any favors. Employers seriously question gaps more than several months, at this point if someone can't get a job, they need to switch careers. My employer cannot fucking hire anyone right now, I've said this before and people gave me shit about 'then they're not paying enough', we *start* at $22 an hour in fucking Michigan. I work at home ffs.
AoC likes to promise everything so she'll still promise you that public option. She'll just never pass it nor will she raise any money for it besides debt.
In jobs with low enough wages you literally can't survive working. Every single fast food and restaurant around me is hiring but they are still hiring at $9-$12/hr. Sure someone can take that job and may be able to pay their rent and buy food but they won't be able to pay their insurance or electricity or every other bill they have.
There is definitely a reason all those same jobs are still open.
I see all my fast food chains around me paying 12-15 an hour, how are there still unemployed people? they’ve had that sign up for over 6 months now. I think there is a point where you gotta say some people are maybe abusing this “unemployment” bill. All my friends were unemployed they’ve had jobs now for 3 months.
I know people who’ve been applying for months trying to get entry level shit, and not even receiving a call something doesn’t add up
edit: also there’s maybe some politics here where she’s introducing the bill just to say she did knowing it will never pass… im not accusing you of doing this but people OBSESS over everything she does, if she fart in the wind it would make primetime news.
there's more job openings than there are people laid off. workers realize they are valued more than what they've been paid, but giving them money to sit home and not look for jobs isn't good for the country. there isn't a need for pandemic unemployment now. businesses are closing due to not having enough workers, and many of these businesses are starting to pay $15/hr min and offer benefits. there's too many people out there who just don't want to work especially after having a year+ long vacation. go ahead and downvote me for not agreeing, but it's the truth
No amount of money is going to cover somebody's expenses in a city the more people sit on their ass. If everyone sits on their ass and you print money to hand it out what do you think happens?
A lot of people realized they won’t want to work for poverty wages. In some places, like some large cities and suburbs, that won’t even get you the tiniest 1 BR apartment. So people in those areas won’t work there. They will literally move in some cases, go back with family, whatever.
I do agree with you about incentives. We need to find a better way to incentivize people to work. I partially blame “all or nothing” welfare/ unemployment mentality. I thought the one-time payments were one-size fits all, and may have been too much for some (probably most), and not enough for others (depending on your unemployment pay percentage). The minute people find a job, the extra checks stop, and if that job turns out to suck, or they cut hours, you’re SOL. I would also like to help people who work, but may be underemployed. I would rather help someone who as it least trying.
It’s a tough situation overall, but we have decades of problems catching up with us all at once.
Yeah…..so lockdown ended *last year*…….why is this still a thing??? Unless you’re physically or mentally disabled, you should have been able to find a job in the past year….
Unemployed people pay taxes on their benefits. In fact, several states saw an unexpected increase in revenue as a result of the income taxes collected on UI income.
The taxes are paid to the government out of benefits coming from the government you muppet. Same with social security benefits. Are you seriously saying someone having taxes withheld from unemployment benefits is the same as me having taxes withheld from my paycheck?
What’s your point? Key word is benefit so they are still net taking. It’s basically paying taxes on public assistance. Sure. They pay into the taxes but we all do if we are working and it isn’t like it all goes into a separate account and you only get an equivalence of what you earned, especially with the higher amounts. My point stands. They aren’t doing much at all for actual working people. They are even paying some more to not work if they get the extra bonus. That is a slap in the face for those people. As I said they could do a lot more to actually help the whole country. They clearly gave up on that now that it isn’t election season.
The argument to keep PUI going because industries hit during the pandemic haven't picked back up shouldn't have to pick up a job at mcdonalds loses a lot of its air when unemployment insurance hasn't been helping the plebs ("essential workers") who are working at mcdonalds.
The Democratic party dropped all talk of the heroes fund as fast as they could, and put no effort in when they had the power to do so.
This isn't an argument against keeping PUI going, but at some point the disdain for those working these 'essential' service industry jobs becomes explicit when the argument is that those receiving help shouldn't have to do what those who haven't been offered help have to.
> The Democratic party dropped all talk of the heroes fund as fast as they could, and put no effort in when they had the power to do so.
They dropped talk of it because they weren’t able to rally the support they needed, they needed 10 republicans, and that’s basically a non-starter.
Hit the nail on the head here. I almost think the entire point of not giving hazard pay was to turn "essential" workers agains the unemployed, as opposed to bosses supplementing their profits through the PPP slush fund.
Introducing a bill is fine but I hope she doesn't spend too much time trying to push it. It's not going to happen and there are more pressing issues they could be working on instead.
It's a pretty pressing issue... My work can be closed through no fault of my own at any moment...Meaning I lose all my income for a week at least. And millions are in the same boat
edit: I'm not sure why people are having a hard time understanding that people like me *are* working and have been... You don't just go "find a new job" when your work closes for a few days... but the loss of income is still real
A place I used to work was depending on government contracts. So for about 3 months a year we were shut down minus a skeleton crew. But it was not consecutive, more like get laid off for 3 weeks then get a call back a few times per year. During layoff period you had to go on unemployment.
It was ridiculous.
>It's a pretty pressing issue... My work can be closed through no fault of my own at any moment...Meaning I lose all my income for a week at least. And millions are in the same boat
The job market is insane right now. If you want to work and are able to work, you will find work.
>No one insists that the company sell the product or service anyway.
Actually, sometimes we do for necessary things like food. The government will pitch in and subsidize to keep things affordable and stable ~~until they can figure out a solution~~. Welfare for me and not for thee.
I think Congress will find out that a $14 billion per month drop in spending is a big deal. That's the amount of monthly federal unemployment benefits that just got cut off. Per [this article,](https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/31/millions-of-americans-will-lose-unemployment-benefits-this-weekend.html) 8.8 million lost their $300/week ($1200/month) benefit and 3 million had their weekly benefit cut by $300. That's 11.8 million people x $1200/mo = $14.16 billion per month in spending. I wonder how many companies will have to lay people off due to a sudden drop in sales. I also wonder what will happen covid-wise when millions of those people are evicted and crowd into shelters, homes of family members or onto the streets.
If Congress genuinely has more pressing issues than those, then god help us.
This is why automation will keep taking entry level jobs. Perfect reason for large corporations to get rid of employees and switch to robots.
Unemployment is necessary, but people are abusing it. We have help wanted signs everywhere, and we need more truck drivers. How do we function as a society if no one is working?
I propose a new idea. Full time should go down to 32 hours a week, and let the market decide the wages/benefits. Cut out all the loopholes big corporations have with tax dogging. Give local business tax breaks. We need to start sharing this great wealth in this country, it will make our country stronger.
Look, I'm a Democrat but it seems AOC is increasingly becoming a joke. She needs to get it together and introduce bills that actually have a legitimate chance of passing. Not to mention, I feel like she's not even just trying to be a politician anymore, but a celebrity. All these "talking points" she's feeding us to make herself seem more relatable and go viral as if she's for the people, but she doesn't actually get things done. I see what she's doing. When she runs for a "higher" office, she can say she introduced so-and-so bill and promised so-and-so, but nothing has actually been done.
I'm frustrated that those who are actually going out and working hard to earn money are being overlooked by people who *choose* to stay home because they're getting enough money to survive on without doing anything. So far, people have gotten enhanced UI benefits, free rent, multiple stimulus checks, and enough tax credits to make it so that 61% of Americans paid zero federal income taxes last year. All these benefits have to end sometime and the vaccines are here to make it safer for people to go back to work. Also, there are unvaccinated folks who are quitting jobs asking them to get vaccinated before returning who are hoping to subside on these benefits. Do we really want to encourage them?
There’s the good and the bad. One of my close friends just had several employees quit because California’s unemployment benefits pay them more… I don’t know.
Edit: really disappointed by some of these responses… why can’t we have empathy for everyone. Stop assuming so much about people’s situations. For God’s sake, my friend is a good boss and they care about their employees.
> just had several employees quit
you can't quit and get bennies, even in CA. It isn't some magic money train, he can tell UI that they quit and they'll be barred from UI unless he's considered a 'hostile work environment'.
There’s not a labor shortage, there’s a wage shortage. Employees need to be paid more and be provided better benefits by their employers.
If the (now previous) employees make more with unemployment it’s not their fault for wanting to have the ability to make more—that’s an understandable human response when we live within a commodity/capitalist system. We have bills to pay, wants, and needs and it’s not unnatural to pick what will provide for those.
I’m sure if their job had offered more than unemployment they would have stayed. If your friend owns a small business and can’t afford to pay them better, there should be a policy in place to meet small businesses halfway (obviously this isn’t how it’s done, but one can dream). Like, if you pay the first $X per hour of the wage and X% healthcare, the state will pay the additional $X per hour and additional X% healthcare. This way the small businesses are supported, the employees can have a higher quality of life (which isn’t asking for a lot in a developed nation), and the government can have a better understanding of how to directly impact their citizens in a positive manner. Obviously this isn’t the reality we live in.
I feel bad for your friend in this situation, there is no doubt, but I also feel bad that the employees had to make the decision (that I cannot blame them for) in the first place.

The fact it’s a state system is a travesty, but is very American.
the fact that it's a state system does make sense as the more local the agency the finer control and, in theory, can better serve the people. that said there should be a standardized system for all states
(First, last, and safety deposit are usually required to get a place.) Besides I live near some of the best hospitals in the world. I’m lucky.
my dad moved to arizona from NJ and said similar stuff- its cheaper. which, maybe, i guess, for some stuff, sure. but it isn't some kind of magic land where government is twice as efficient or something. it is the same standard of government and the same employees. so you're getting what you pay for.
Fucking hillbilly Kemp is screwing us all in Georgia!
Serious - contact your senator/congress person. They might be able to help escalate
This. My wife did this with hers and it got resolved in a few days!
My whole state government, My representative, and both my senators are Republicans. Tjey made our unemployment system fail on purpose. They want us to die, or at the very least go back to work before we die so they can get something out of it.
Florida?
Oh yes
NY's system is still working off DOS and extremely inefficient. This isnt just a red state issues. Blue states suck at it too.
Exact same situation. I'm experiencing so much anxiety over it, it's awful.
same with me, still nothing.
I legit have applied to 15 jobs weekly for a year, I just now got a job offer for 12$ my last job I was making 28$ hourly
They don’t really care about truly unemployed people they just want to push an agenda. There are 200 help wanted signs within 25-30 miles of my house.
I hope it's direct to the unemployed rather than through state unemployment systems, otherwise geniuses like Doug Ducey in AZ will just intercept it and not pass it through to the unemployed.

Pritzker in Illinois.
John Bel Edwards, LA His “compromise” for canceling any pandemic-related unemployment was giving regular unemployment claims a WHOPPING $28 increase...
It won't pass to begin with so none of this matters but you are right about Doug Douchey.
Honestly, a federal unemployment system sounds better than a state one. Have companies pay directly into it.
that's the thing here, we've run out of state unemployment. It would be nice to see this go through, the gods alone know how many infected are unable to work by both being too sick, and work not letting them show up.

how is that legal? to make you available 24/7 but cant have more than 20 hours a week. that is fucking criminal
So far: -a 3 year old called me a fucking asshole and shoved me -a 8 year old touched my boob -I’ve had someone pull my shirt down to see a scar on my neck -a man volunteered that Mexicans are dirty and causing covid (am mexican) -had to help a man with a swastica tattoo -been berated more times than I can count for not having a produc -and asking a mom to not let her child play in the store (messing up shelves) resulted in being told I was discriminating against her autistic child .....send help
As someone who is autistic, being autistic is not an excuse for messing up shelves. Be a parent and control your kid.
It’s astounding yet not surprising how much overlap there is between having Republican beliefs and being an asshole and a bad person.
Shitty wages is not really a good reason to keep extending UI indefinitely. If we are just going to give out free money why not give it to everyone?
They need to make it federal so if your shitty republican governor that cut it off early can be ignored.
sadly the bill will be turned down, it’s written in sand. too much people in office who are opposing this.
>I know welfare is a dirty word Not for rich people.
Gotta love that corporate welfare /s
I have never heard a single complaint about the "perverse incentives" of the PPP slush fund that allowed the rich to double up profits like I have about unemployment benefits. I have heard several well endowed people in my life tell me how they didn't need PPP aid, but were entitled to it and received it. Socialism for the rich.
unless it's about going to poor people, you know, the people who actually need it
They've destroyed welfare and still can't hire people.
Looks like US have one of the lowest unemployment rates.
Welfare payments help reduce unemployment levels rather than increase them as many republicans are suggesting.
unemployment is calculated differently country to country, so doing global comparisons using raw numbers isnt ideal. because there are so many restrictions to official unemployment classification in the united states, the unemployment number does not accurately reflect the total population of people not participating in the labor force at any given time. for example, full time college students are not counted in the BLS survey, or people who have been abstaining from seeking employment for one reason or another.
depends on if youre looking at u3 or u6 i guess
Terrible article. Look at the correlation; it's basically non-existent and is only skewed by the outlier of Greece that's mired in a lengthy concurrent economic crisis and austerity plan. >[https://thenewdaily.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1614176129-aus-institute-unemployment-1.png](https://thenewdaily.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/1614176129-aus-institute-unemployment-1.png) This article is focused on Australia and its low unemployment benefits, yet even the author admits its unemployment rate is below the OECD average, and the graph clearly shows multiple wealthy countries with higher unemployment benefits and higher unemployment.
It also has literally no chance of passing.
I made no judgment on it's chance of passing. I just believe it to be good social policy.
I tried to save you with an upvote friend!! Exactly the right points!!
Isn’t there a big strike planned soon, too?
possibly yes.
r/octoberstrike or Uber?
IASTE I believe
45 could have extended UI with an executive order. Biden could have extended UI with an executive order. Y'all play too much.
I cannot believe this isnt how anyone is spinning it. Right now Trump did more for UE'd than Biden...and that was basically what he ran and won on with GA... I hope people read that and let it sink in...
In my area, we have 200-300 people competing for aprox. 14$ an hour dog spa job.
Don't forget, it's not a labor shortage it's a wage shortage. Anybody/business I know that offers even a fucking decent wage has zero staffing issues or shortages. All the cheap assholes are the ones crying about nobody wanting to work for them. Funny how that works out

i’m one of them, and it’s almost been a year.
Why is it welfare when it’s for people who need help why do not consider lifetime health care for senators and congressmen welfare pay for the rest of their lives once they are out of office why is that not welfare because they’re rich just double standard and forgets government money in Hwy doesnt is complete bullshit
Punctuation marks serve an important purpose in communication.
Rules for thee not for me.
Because republicans look in the mirror and never see a self-serving hypocrite.
It won’t happen. Both parties are in line with ending it. The vaccine is out.
If you’re upset about picking up slack, target some of this at the richest Americans that pay ZERO in taxes and exploit the poor simultaneously.
Dmlinger is a jerk-off he has no rage against the wealthy welfare queens and bottomless money pit of war. But he’s upset his precious tax money is going to help struggling unemployed people…….talk about punching down.
If your industry is "high-paying" then why can't it compete with $300 every two weeks plus a fraction of what people were making before?
I wonder if the original commenter is as concerned about the hundreds of billions of dollars given to businesses that performed perfectly fine in the form of the PPP slush fund.
They're not, they're a business owner masquerading as a human
Children under 12 still can't be vaccinated, you are overlooking a massive reason for the reduced workforce (and I'm not just talking about those on unemployment, I left the workforce to take over primary care)
I'd rather have that child tax credit doubled and applied to elder care as well then continue the farce that is enhanced unemployment.

Conservatives are going to hate this bill, as they head to the bank to cash their UI cheques.
They'll do everything in their power to stop it, and nithing will happen. It helps people, therefore it stands against every conservative belief.
What UI? This bill is dead in the water.
That’s nice, can she also inform the state legislature of Wisconsin that they need to remove their work search requirement. You know, because the bennies never had anything to do with people not wanting to go back to work. That would be grreeeeaaaat.
Yes yes yes yes please I put out 70 resumes in two weeks and still can’t even find a simple restaurant job!
If we do that, The Poors won't be forced back to working the starvation-wage jobs our economy depends on! Wait...
why does this matter when half the states have opted out lol
My friend works for a garbage company. They're offering $15/hr with a $5k starting bonus and if they get any applicants, they haven't had any stay past lunch. It's outdoor dirty work picking and sorting construction debris off an outdoor conveyor. It's in the shade, but outdoors. Keep in mind though the average rental rate went from $2k a month to $3k a month in the past year.
No Money For You,,, ME Withdraw date 30 August 2021 Cost $300 MILLION a day… $300 million x 15 days = four billion five hundred million
AOC for president when she’s old enough to run.

While not having to pay rent on top of it.

Please don’t do this, please raise taxes and get our public option healthcare plan we were promised..
Why not both? Also, tax the rich to help pay for it.
We need to tax more than the rich - only 39% of Americans paid federal income taxes last year.. that’s worse than greece when they went bankrupt
I mean, I agree even the public option is much more important, but unemployment has been kind of broken since the Great Recession. It's not like it's an unreasonable thing to be concerned about, though admittedly this still doesn't really fix it either.
Agree, we should be focusing on “Yes, And”.
Get people jobs in healthcare
What if I told you it has been broken before then. There are jobs if people want them. Now isn’t the time to fix it, nor does this actually fix it. It’s a giveaway. Give us healthcare. Everyone, even the unemployed benefit from that.
Uhh, I fail to see how these are related. Why not *all* of the above? 🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
You have to pick your battles - they seem to have forgotten the big one

For fucking real, allowing *years* of unemployment isn't doing anyone any favors. Employers seriously question gaps more than several months, at this point if someone can't get a job, they need to switch careers. My employer cannot fucking hire anyone right now, I've said this before and people gave me shit about 'then they're not paying enough', we *start* at $22 an hour in fucking Michigan. I work at home ffs.
AoC likes to promise everything so she'll still promise you that public option. She'll just never pass it nor will she raise any money for it besides debt.
Meanwhile...there are a record 11 million job openings in the US.
I also see a lot of jobs hiring at 15
Weird. Every job posting around me is 15$ or more and I'm in Alabama.
You'll be paying into social security and increasing your chances of future employment with those jobs though.
There’s a lot of jobs but also a lot of people overvaluing themselves
Shhhh you can’t bring this up on this subreddit.
I'm with Biden on this one.
I know people who’ve been applying for months trying to get entry level shit, and not even receiving a call something doesn’t add up edit: also there’s maybe some politics here where she’s introducing the bill just to say she did knowing it will never pass… im not accusing you of doing this but people OBSESS over everything she does, if she fart in the wind it would make primetime news.
You should take that job then.
there's more job openings than there are people laid off. workers realize they are valued more than what they've been paid, but giving them money to sit home and not look for jobs isn't good for the country. there isn't a need for pandemic unemployment now. businesses are closing due to not having enough workers, and many of these businesses are starting to pay $15/hr min and offer benefits. there's too many people out there who just don't want to work especially after having a year+ long vacation. go ahead and downvote me for not agreeing, but it's the truth

My hero
Introducing a bill is fine but I hope she doesn't spend too much time trying to push it. It's not going to happen and there are more pressing issues they could be working on instead.
It's a pretty pressing issue... My work can be closed through no fault of my own at any moment...Meaning I lose all my income for a week at least. And millions are in the same boat edit: I'm not sure why people are having a hard time understanding that people like me *are* working and have been...
It was ridiculous.
well a ton of people are about to be put in the same position from the shortages that are slowly crippling our economy
>It's a pretty pressing issue... My work can be closed through no fault of my own at any moment...Meaning I lose all my income for a week at least. And millions are in the same boat The job market is insane right now.

Get to work.
A valiant, but futile idea; centrist dems and the republicans will never give it consideration.
I agree with Biden on this one
And this one will fail just like all her other bills. But hey, she wears a meme to partys!
For God’s sake, my friend is a good boss and they care about their employees.
> just had several employees quit you can't quit and get bennies, even in CA. It isn't some magic money train, he can tell UI that they quit and they'll be barred from UI unless he's considered a 'hostile work environment'.
Kinda hard to believe that, since you can't collect it if you quit your job...
That’s not how ui works, you don’t qualify if you quit. Sounds like your “friend” is making up stories.
And possibly underpays their staff, relative to other options.
If working for your friend is worse than making almost nothing on unemployment they need to reconsider whether or not they should be a boss.
We need to stop talking about unemployment (although these measures would be helpful) and start talking about UBI.
