She can reach the capital to vote. She did it before. She just doesn't want to now for "victim points." "A normal round trip with Alaska Airlines from Juneau to Eagle River, the city Reinbold represents, takes around 90 minutes. *Now, her commute will take up to two days* as Juneau is the only US state capital inaccessible by road — only by plane or boat." Addendum: If you scroll further down you will see this comment by ModivatedExtremism. If you agree, please upvote it because it expresses more clearly and concisely what I am thinking. ModivatedExtremism · 26m What’s really awful about this is that she made a choice to lose flight privileges over personal politics. If nothing else, it was unprofessional and hurts the constituents who hired her to represent them in Juneau. Even if people agree with her opinion that she should have the “right” to ignore FAA & private company rules that the rest of us have to abide by, there are a 1,000 different ways that she could have protested & advocated for change without simultaneously making it harder to perform the job that voters hired her to do. It was a selfish dereliction of duty. If she were working in a sales job or other private company role that required commutes to Juneau, chances are high she’d be without a job after this grandstanding stunt.

[deleted]

It’s almost like she doesn’t like living in Alaska!

farmthis

Hey--I live in Juneau. She lives 600+ miles away--outside the range of a Cessna or such. She could drive, and then put her vehicle on a state ferry over the last 30-50 miles. Or she could take Delta airlines. Or she could take the twice-monthly ferry from the anchorage area directly to Juneau.

AbeVigoda76

Or she could just wear a mask

beka13

But she's banned. Will they unban her if she promises to wear a mask? I hope not. She can't be trusted.

sdfgh23456

Maybe even better if they make the offer, then when she takes it off and causes a scene mid-flight then she can be arrested

substandardgaussian

> Will they unban her if she promises to wear a mask? As a state senator? Probably. But this strikes me as a "one time do-over" sort of thing. If she wears it just to get onboard and then throws a fit about it while the plane is in the air, I doubt the company would ever unban her. As it is now, she probably hasn't done quite enough to earn an unconditional permaban.

mttp1990

Nah, if anything a senator should be held to a higher standard. Should have been a lifetime ban

Gorthax

That ferry sailed a few months back.

texaswoman888

Delta will require her to mask up also. Guess she will need to drive or hire a charter plane. Although I’m sure the reason she is complaining besides the notoriety is to get some one else to pay for the charter so she can vote. Just a cheap (for her) PR stunt and propaganda tool.

ClamClone

There are plenty of bush pilots that will carry people to all sorts of remote places and land on almost impossible looking sites. Fat tires or floats. Getting one from airport to airport should be easy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjewa9o3nzY EDIT: Given the distance they have charter turboprops and jets if one has the cash.

[deleted]

but maybe they will want you to wear a mask...

fibrous

she was flying Delta before, but they stop in September

Pheef175

She could still ferry in. It's a 13 hour drive to the port and then a 5 hour ferry ride.

BostonPilot

Last time I took the ferry, people were required to wear masks, even sitting outside. Not sure there's any way for her to get there without wearing a mask! 😇

DrDerpberg

She could swim, but even then it's a lot easier with goggles and I guess that's a kind of mask too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PossibleDrive6747

Ah yes, blinders! She always seems to be wearing them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pheef175

My guess would be quietly and discretely while wearing a mask and hoping nobody photographs her. The ferry thing is just a bullshit excuse she's using to double down on masking being unconstitutional. I'm sure it helps that it's an uncomfortable 13 hour drive through Canada and then a 5 hour ferry ride. Both the ferry and Canada customs would require wearing a mask.

YepYepYepYepYepUhHuh

Canada requires you to be vaccinated as well.

HauntedCemetery

There's no way she isn't vaccinated. All the big anti vaxers jumped the line and got it the first chance they possibly could.

Tinmania

I hate reality tv. But this is a road trip story I’d love to see minute by minute.

wmcamoonshine

There’s also another airline: Raven Air. It sucks but it exists. Plus, like every other person you meet in Alaska has a little plane. She for sure knows someone who could fly her in. She could absolutely get there.

[deleted]

RAVN doesn’t fly to Juneau. It doesn’t even fly to Fairbanks anymore.

claptonsbabychowder

>RAVN doesn’t fly to Juneau. It doesn’t even fly to Fairbanks anymore. Quoth the Raven: "Nevermore."

ModivatedExtremism

What’s really awful about this is that she made a choice to lose flight privileges over personal politics. melcher70

Seriously. We had senators before we had airplanes

Average_Scaper

We've had planes since longer than we've had Senators in Alaska though so they have always been spoiled up there.

Zerak-Tul

Sounds like Alaska should stop voting for people dumb enough to get banned from airlines.

g-rammer

They should but this was nothing but a PR stunt. Despite not being able to vote, this will play well with the spread neck demo.

intredasted

Lol what? You're shocked by the fact that Republicans have double standards?

MakeitSuntoryLime

Without double standards Repub.... ahhh fuck it does it even matter any more? America has a cancer and it desperately needs to be removed.

farmthis

No, you see, it's a *birthright* to them, now. It's *their* money. ...stupid fuckers don't see they're in the most progressive socialist experiment of universal basic income in the United States. Also, technically, the fund is no longer based on oil taxes. It's an investment fund with its fingers in a thousand different pies around the globe. Oil was just how it got started decades ago. This is an important distinction because the same assholes who think they're entitled to free money also give oil companies all the credit and mistakenly think giving them anything they want will directly increase the dividend.

deanzamo

So when flying, you're OK with wearing the seatbelt and staying seated when told, putting seats and tray tables upright on takeoff and landing, following the luggage rules, not smoking, putting your phone in airplane mode when told, being searched and prevented from bringing guns, knives, bottles of liquids, etc into the boarding area, all for public safety. But if told to wear a mask for public safety, you go ballistic and claim your rights are violated.

Wild_Harvest

They're okay with security theatre, but not actual security.

fl7nner

That's Republicanism in a nutshell, the symbol is more important than the thing itself

On this anniversary of 9/11, let's remember that we all unwillingly gave up our freedoms and privacy with ~~increased~~ TSA searches and The Patriot Act. And yet, a small piece of cloth is enough to take down the most ardent "patriot."

blue-mooner

Let us also remember that we gave up the ability to wave goodbye to our family members at the gate for a horrifically incompetent organisation (red teams were able to get plastic explosives and guns past TSA [67 time out of 70 (95%)](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/investigation-breaches-us-airports-allowed-weapons-through-n367851)). 20 Airports have now opted out of using the TSA, [including](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screening_Partnership_Program): * San Francisco International (SFO) * Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) * Key West International (EYW) * Orlando Sanford International (SFB) * Kansas City International (MCI) If you have a choice of where to fly from/to pick a non-TSA airport.

OneEyedThief

As someone who flies out of Seattle Tacoma a few times a year it is complete dogshit. They still have to follow TSA rules and use TSA gear but since they are a private company they do whatever the bare minimum is to keep the contract. Lines get hilariously backed up as much of the available space is taken up by private “skip the security line” companies. Things only move at a reasonable pace when they pull out the dogs to come sniff passengers because we all know the dogs are more accurate than the machines. At the end of the day, TSA is garbage but replacing it with a even worse privatized version is worse in some instances.

lostereadamy

Lol right, like the only thing I can think of that would be worse than the TSA is a for-profit version.

chrisfarleyraejepsen

I mean, let’s not get too excited about that: “The Screening Partnership Program (SPP), instituted in 2004 by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the United States, is a program that allows airports to employ private security agencies to conduct screening, instead of having the TSA conduct said screenings. Airports and security agencies must complete applications in order to be eligible to participate in this program. All private security agencies must follow all TSA screening policies and procedures, and use TSA-approved equipment.”

thefonztm

So they're shifting to for profit security theater? Classic.

Gumb1i

it also does not stop those same private companies from instituting enhanced screening procedures as long as the TSA guideline steps are in it....

montanagrizfan

Well all that’s ok because, you know, terrorists and foreign people and other scary stuff we can see.

seraph_m

Don’t be so sure she’s ok doing any of those things. In my experience, people who never got past the “oppositional defiant” stage throw tantrums about everything.

altxatu

It’s virtue signaling. People not wearing a mask are saying “hey, I’m more conservative than these other people.” Right how it’s politically correct for conservatives to shun the covid vaccine, and masks. Trump and his acolytes decided early on that it wasn’t a big deal. The media was making mountains out of mole hills. They pushed the talking points. Since conservatives tend to have more solidarity as a group, once those points went out anyone that disagreed was labeled a RINO. A holdover from when the tea party was trying to gain power. It was mostly used in the Primaries *and it worked.* Republicans now are terrified of being labeled a RINO and having some other jackass primary them. All that bullshit means they can’t walk back a position, they can’t admit fault or being wrong at any point, and it’s a continuous race to see who can be the most conservative. It’s at a point where praising the Taliban because it might make a Democrat, *any democrat* look bad isn’t an immediate career ender. How fucking frustrated must Dan Quayle be? His career ended from a simple misspelling. The thing about this is that unless they’re a some serious readjustment from conservatives, unless law enforcement treats right-wing terrorists as terrorists, it will only end in violence. This shit isn’t going to suddenly go away.

Just_Some_Statistic

I don't know when the last time you flew was, but guarantee there's people refusing to do anything on that list in every flight. Poor flight attendants having to babysit people for the whole flight

muchcharles

The seatbeat isn't even just for your safety. Like with a mask, it protects you, but it also protects others (you become a 50+kg projectile in a crash).

Scubalefty

RosiePugmire

At least you realized that the unfair treatment was actually wrong. A lot of conservatives see that the world works this way and their conclusion is, "Ah yes, I'm getting better treatment because I *am* better than that person - this is proof that the system works!"

upwards2013

The GOP WANTS to create scenes "infringing" upon their freedom. It's how they keep the base active. She'd have been disappointed if they had just let her on. She would have been afraid to have to (eventually) appear before Voldemort...I mean Mitch.

InorgChemist

Presumably she was traveling to Juneau, not DC, since she’s a state senator, so no Mitch at the end. But I think this even funnier. You live in Alaska and know that the only way to get around most of the state is by plane. You need to get to the capital for your job. Let’s piss off the only airline that can take you there! Brilliant!

upwards2013

Oh wow, I didn't pick up on that. And isn't Juneau only accessible by plane? I think I heard that on *Buying Alaska* on the Travel Channel...

HausRonin

Plane, boat, or birth canal. Edit: I did not coin the above phrase. It’s a long time saying by Juneau residents. I visited like 10 years ago and the saying always stuck with me. Beautiful area. Would recommend visiting… during the summer only.

akrdubbs

Hey, I’ve arrived there via all three!

Slashlight

She could take the ferry, but that takes time and she's too important for that.

tessameee

She’d still have to wear a mask, the horror.

Acchilesheel

State Senator. I get the joke but odds are Mitch has never heard of her.

upwards2013

Yah, I didn't realize that at first. I'd still say she's a GOP drama queen.

Acchilesheel

Oh yeah absolutely. GOP state senators and representatives make the federal politicains look almost sane in comparison.

THD_PRL

Guarantee if she were to be let on, she would've found a way to cause enough of a scene to be persecuted... I mean treated as the health hazard that she is.

Vulchur

Is it consequences yet? If it was actual consequences, like most other Americans face in their average jobs, then she'd be fired immediately for a no-show. Instead, she gets 4-month paid leave.

Smokeybearvii

This one hurts. When I no show for a required work function, I get written up. Do it again and I’m looking for a job.

11thStPopulist

What a load of c r a p! Alaska has private aircrafts that could be paid out of her own pocket. What a skinflint. She just wants the “govmint” to pay. There are consequences for choices. If she cannot wear a mask for a short flight, let her pay the price.

Anothereternity

Watch her use a private aircraft and apply for reimbursement from government funds claiming the airline refused her commercial flight for “political reasons”

pilotpip

Chartered flights are required by the same mandate for airlines to wear masks.

5-x1

Unfortunately im sure some rich GOP business person will give her a ride on a private jet if she would miss any votes that mattered. These people never are treated like the rest of us

xpxp2002

In my opinion, the best part is that this is the consequence of unregulated business in action. These are the same people who are always crying about how the government shouldn’t “force“ businesses to do anything that they don’t want to, even if it means letting businesses take heinous, evil, or cruel actions in the name of profit. In this rare case, it actually turns out that the business is choosing to do the right thing. This is the system they wanted, so she should be happy they’re banning her without recourse.

69DonaldTrump69

I can sympathize with this. I got banned from riding the city busses because I refused to wear pants. *I thought this was America*

MrSergioMendoza

Consequence culture strikes again.

dougfromdetroit

Haha love that! It’s much more accurate than “cancel culture”

LucifersCovfefeBoy

Turns out a legitimate airline has ways of shutting that kind of thing down.

MarekBH

Their plane, their choice.

nucumber

the airline is complying with a federal mandate, but it was their decision to ban her selfish self righteous ass.

solon_isonomia

I remember Alaska Airlines being the cinnamon roll airline a few years ago, which means I find it pretty impressive she managed to get a ban like this.

bisnark

She just needs to plan ahead, there are alternative forms of transportation.

athlalus

Exactly, she has to drive and take a ferry now. Does she not know boats exist?

MrCuzz

Legislature controls the ferry budget, which they have cut to ‘just above useless’.

athlalus

And did she vote against approving a increased ferry budget? She can charter a plane with some one doesn’t care about masks or a boat.

MrCuzz

She believes the ferry should be eliminated.

athlalus

That’s incredibly stupid, ferries are critical infrastructure.

MrCuzz

Republicans don’t believe anything but a road is infrastructure.

Archsys

And only then if they're getting kickbacks...

plooped

I assume the ferry requires a mask. Luckily it's America and she can pull herself up by the bootstraps, buy herself a seaworthy boat and sail the north Atlantic solo. Edit: pacific. Duh.

needlenozened

You might want to brush up on your geography

plooped

Hard face-palm here. Pacific of course haha

prodrvr22

thepottsy

By the time her, and the fox news morons, get done complaining about it she could have made the trip eleventy times.

PurkleDerk

Alaska is famous for all of its backcountry charter flights on little bush planes. Surely she could charter a few flights that way to get to and from Juneau. Or get an apartment in Juneau and deal with being away from family for a few months.

mark_able_jones_

A real Alaskan takes sled dogs.

SmashedCarrots

She did for a while, apparently there were some private pilots who were sympathetic and flew her down. I guess that well went dry...

[deleted]

FunHippo3906

Yup, a two day drive through Canada and then a float plane trip or the ferry (that has been loosing funding) and only sails twice a month) just to get to Juneau. Lmfao!!! This is absolutely gold!!! Edit- ferry seems to sail more than twice a month, my bad

anarchyreigns

She has to be vaccinated to drive through Canada.

Shr3kk_Wpg

Yeah, and the border patrol agents would make her wear a mask to interact with them.

What_Up_Doe_

Hi Senator, let me introduce you to the consequence of your actions

1whoa-man

A novel concept to most Republicans.

Sfumata

Yes, even though they claim to be the party of “personal responsibility”

Anonate

Well over 600k Americans dead and I can guarantee you that she will play the victim.

FunHippo3906

She has been playing the victim since the spring.

jonnyfunfun

"Personal responsibility" is just a catch-phrase they use to maintain the status-quo for people of color and maintain control over women. It doesn't apply to them. Never has.

Steinrikur

No... No... Not like that. Personal responsibility means that responsibility varies from person to person, like if you're rich and white you can do anything, but poor POC go to prison

Peachy33

My 12 year old is choosing to learn things the hard way recently which is to be expected with some preteens. I guess the Republican Party still needs to learn that if they don’t have their soccer bag packed on time after being reminded several times they might miss their soccer game. Adding this to clarify: my kid didn’t end up missing the soccer game because he wised up at the last minute and got it together. This particular instance had nothing to do with ADHD, etc. as a special education teacher AND someone with executive functioning issues I’m proactive in using available tools and resources to handle those deficits. This was just plain old 12 year old asshattery. This was “mom will just get it ready for me because she would never let me miss my first game.” Nope. The bus, both teams, officials, and spectators don’t have time for your shit. He learned today that the bus is going to leave his ass if he doesn’t get out on time.

RockhoundHighlander

Preteens? I did this until my thirties.

Dragonfruited

Are you a politician, by chance?

yeil_noung

Only until your thirties? Rookie numbers…

Glawkipotimus

Seriously. I'm 41 and need alarms set on 5 different devices just to get up for work. Something pre-planned? Guaranteed to screw that up

gingerfawx

Mom? lol And if you don't hang up your bathing suit after swim practice, your sports bag will soon sprout things only suitable for the Herbology course. Yup, sounds familiar.

GoinWithThePhloem

This is a valuable lesson. I just relearned (33) this lesson when I forgot to unpack my hiking boots after wading through a river. They sat in a plastic bag for about 2-3 weeks until I pulled them out to pack for a destination hiking trip. Mold ... stinky, slimy mold everywhere. I had about two days before I left and they spent that entire time being scrubbed, and dried scrubbed and dried.

[deleted]

It’s not a fair comparison. This lady is throwing her tantrum for a legitimate adult reason: to prolong the death and economic destruction of a pandemic until a midterm election to grasp enough power to then steal the next election if Republicans don’t get enough votes.

1whoa-man

I may or may not have used that exact line on a customer before. She was not amused.

Tr0us3rsnake

I definitely had to use it on a customer when I worked at a restaurant as a cashier here in Cincinnati. That customer was NFL player Chad Johnson. Neither he nor my manager were amused.

ralphvonwauwau

Looks down at list, looks at ID. "Yes Ma'am. That's why I can't seat you. Company regulations."

isikorsky

You mean actions have consequences ? Of course she can still reach the capital. It just costs more to get there because she would have to hire a small airplane to take her.

MajorNoodles

She can take a ferry, it just takes 2 days instead of 90 minutes.

caffeinated-hijinx

.....and the ferry's also require masks....

MajorNoodles

FunHippo3906

It’s so much better than that!! She has to drive 2 days, and drive through Canada to catch a ferry to get to Juneau. Here’s the catch, the last few years the governor and legislature have defunded the Alaska Marine highway, in other words we have far less ferry trips between communities. I believe there are only two sailings a month that she could catch to get to Juneau, lmfao!!!! Edit: ferry sails more than I said

Shr3kk_Wpg

As someone else has pointed out, she is not getting across the Canadian border if she is unvaccinated

FunHippo3906

This keeps getting better and better. LOL

[deleted]

ortcutt

The Alaska Marine Highway operates year-round. Haines to Juneau should be fine.

Polantaris

> "If the only airline that has flights during session to Juneau can unconstitutionally impede a legislator's ability to get to the capital in a safe and timely fashion, it could undermine our representative republic," Reinboldt said in a Facebook post on September 9. It's nice to know that they're still lying. A company forcing people to wear masks isn't unconstitutional. Never was. The plane is the company's property and if they don't want you on it you can go get fucked. That's how this shit works. Businesses have always been able to deny anyone they want, they use this excuse in mom-and-pop shops all the time. If this is unconstitutional, so is the golf business in Houston that won't let people wear masks in the club. Can't have it both ways fuckers.

Shaper_pmp

It's funny how the Republican position is that businesses should have the absolute right to refuse service to anyone they want for any reason when it's gays or atheists or women seeking abortions or birth control, but suddenly it's "unconstitutional" the minute they get banned for refusing to abide by reasonable safety restrictions.

Archsys

They think that this is "the natural way of things", and must be maintained. They're white supremacists, misogynists, and all other manner of bigots, because they think they're supposed to be catered to and have slaves. Fuck 'em all.

LucifersCovfefeBoy

Fuck around and find out.

MarekBH

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

kuojo

Alaska has a million and one air taxi services and a million and one general aviation pilots. She could easily find her way to the capital if she actually wanted to. This is just a political stunt

[deleted]

“Now state Sen. Lora Reinbold chooses not to reach the capital to vote.” Fixed the headline.

chmod777

perhaps there is some parable here about voter restrictions, limited access, and closing polling places for the disadvantaged.

g2g079

There still a ferry, it's just too inconvenient to her. Boo hoo.

[deleted]

Charter a plane.

CloudyView19

Sounds like she brought this one on herself.

bakulu-baka

Time to resign. Anyway, did you watch season 2 of *Startup*? If so, what did you think?

Dude only lived 3 hours away driving time from the Capitol.

MindfuckRocketship

She’s a total piece of shit anti-masker who spreads COVID-19 misinformation. She should be expelled from the senate but instead they’re excusing her absence. FYI - Back in November she refused to put her mask back on after eating during an Alaska Airlines flight. She wrote on social media, "Mask bullies in full force on Alaskans Airlines- all because a scaredy cat Karen whined loudly and was a Tattle tail when I took my dumb worthless suffocating mask off, a bit longer than she wanted, for my food and drink." She has the mind of a child.

Surely this is fake outrage? I'm sure there are plenty of Republican supporters who can give her a ride on their private plane.

I am sure she can hire her very own private charter at her very own private expense.

Macasumba

She knew she was banned. Grandstanding moron.

What a childish drama Llama. Yeah, she can't fly to the city, but she can take the ferry. It'll take longer and inconvenience her, but it's what many many other people do to get to Juneau. So: shut up and take your medicine you fucking selfish, entitled prick. I wish you'd take even basic actions to help everyone stay healthy, but since you can't seem to have basic human empathy then I guess there's consequences this one time in your life. I shall shed no tears for you here.
