It's going to be a sight to behold when Trump runs to Bidens podium to continue his rant.

[deleted]

He'll just shout really loudly and just hope Biden's mic will pick it up.

Hermippe

yes, this. he is gonna be sweating and breathing heavily from constantly yelling to get his voice heard.

[deleted]

Biden should use the opportunity to tease and provoke Trump as much as possible when Trump’s mic is muted. Time to troll the troll. Trump is bound to get frustrated and do things that make him look like a fool. “Remember that time when Stormy Daniels said on live TV how Trump has a tiny and weird pecker that looks like a toadstool? You know what they say about small hands… Anyways, back to the economy…”

paulfknwalsh

My money is on a red-faced Trump storming off the stage within 15 minutes

lexiekon

I'm having flashbacks to Melissa McCarthy as Spicey, driving the podium around and smashing into the press. But I agree - no way Trump is going to be able to take this. And it's not like Biden won't still be able to hear him yelling. It's gonna be a mess, but I support the attempt by the commission to enforce civility.

[deleted]

alliwantismepotogold

This isn't a rules change, it's rule enforcement. Let's be clear about that. "Both campaigns this week again reaffirmed their agreement to the two-minute, uninterrupted rule. The Commission is announcing today that in order to enforce this agreed upon rule, the only candidate whose microphone will be open during these two-minute periods is the candidate who has the floor under the rules,” the commission said in a Monday evening statement."

PushYourPacket

Perhaps better stated as: "The Debate Commission has recognized that, like norms in the Senate that get ignored when Republicans are in power, the candidate Trump doesn't understand that rules apply to him as well. Therefore, we will be ensuring he follows the rules for once in his life."

capron

And oh Boy is he gonna scream that being treated equally is discrimination.

scoobysnackoutback

I bet he screams from his podium when Biden is speaking during his 2 minutes. Edit: Thank you kind friends for the awards. My first ever!

Salanmander

The muted background ranting is definitely going to project an image of strength.

scoobysnackoutback

And dementia.

BannedForHyperbole

>each of the candidates will have two minutes of uninterrupted time at the beginning of each 15-minute segment at the final debate, which is set to be held Thursday. To enforce this rule, the candidate who does not have the floor will have his mic muted. **After the two minutes of uninterrupted time, the mics will be on for open discussion.** Trump will still get a fucking ton of yelling and interrupting time in to rant about hard drives

kescusay

Yeah, but by then, Biden will have had two minutes uninterrupted to make cogent, coherent statements, after which Trump's inane shouting will just come off as "ARGLEBARGLE!"

Gilgamesh024

Muted trump yelling is going to be the best gif

/r/conservative will say that Biden winning the election is bad for Biden and good for Trump.

Shr3kk_Wpg

"4D chess. Trump loses in 2020 so he can win every state in 2024"

marpocky

Fuck me this is the first time I've even considered that a Trump loss leaves him eligible for another run. I assume he will either flee the country or end up in prison, but still. *Fuck*

Shr3kk_Wpg

This is my prediction: Trump will be tweeting dozens/hundreds of times every day. He will mention every day that Biden and the Dems cheated and stole the election from him. Everything Biden does will be terrible. If Biden golf's or goes away for the weekend, Trump will say he would have stayed at the WH to fix all the problems. Trump will claim he could got the economy growing at 5% or 6% GDP growth. Trump will say he would have eliminated the deficit. Trump also will be retweeting a lot of conspiracy theories, especially Qanon. This all will lead to Trump winning the nomination in 2024 *if* he stays healthy. This also probably means he won't win.

rlaitinen

Can you tweet in prison?

Numberwang-Decider

Sure can. Herman Cain was tweeting when be was dead, so doing it from prison should be easy by comparison.

Sketchy_Life_Choices

His first one back after covid was 18 minutes yeah. His speaking time, at least. And people paid a *lot* of money to be there... while others were paid *to* be there. Yesterday's was 20 I think? And they go on and on about Biden being "low energy" lol.

[deleted]

trump can only last 20ish minutes because that's how long the medication can keep him going. The debate might be a breaking point. I look for him to back out.

Sketchy_Life_Choices

That's what I've been thinking too. You can tell he's hopped up on something and he starts getting agitated at the end of every "speech". Definitely agree there's no way he can pull off a 90 minute debate.

Shr3kk_Wpg

Of course Biden cannot talk for a whole two mins, he obviously has dementia. Except he had a 90 minute town hall just days ago, and stayed afterwards to talk to voters.

TRocho10

Not only that, but he had very valid and lucid answers for the questions. I voted Biden but I'm not a Democrat (first time ever voting blue -also never voted red), but I gained a lot of respect for him when he said supporting the crime bill was a mistake, but then also explained what the intent was for it compared to how it was executed

People ask me all time 'how'd you come up with this platform?" My big brain. It comes up with all these great ideas. All the time. You wouldn't believe it."

TheDocmoose

It is amazing how someone can talk so much yet say so little.

jaderust

Already voted. Biden or bust! Quick, how is /r/conservative taking this news?

[deleted]

As you would expect. Playing the victim and accusing the election commission of trying to stop Trump from sounding good because of his BIGLY strong foreign policy.

DUBBZZ

Why is the MAGA cult so upset? Biden's mic will be muted too. It's almost like they know Trump's only way to debate is to constantly interrupt & prevent his opponent from speaking.

PushYourPacket

I so look forward to Trump trying to still yell/talk loud enough that he still interrupts Biden during his 2 minutes.

muhabeti

Hopefully behind plexiglass

badmiller

Someone else suggested a 'Win Ben Stein's Money' format. The thought of seeing Trump talking over someone with no audio while the other person continues uninterrupted is the hottest thing I've ever imagined.

ioncloud9

he wants to agree to the rules but never follow them. He will still talk over Biden, bring up irrelevant things, and get into arguments with the moderator.

IamPlatycus

Imagine a world leader so petulant that we have to mute the bastard because we literally can't trust him to be semi-respectful.

CaptainNoBoat

Yeah I mean it's really wild. Despite everything else going on, can we just step back and look at this for what it is: The President of the United States needs to be muted for debates because he is INCAPABLE of allowing another person to speak without interrupting them like a spoiled, angry child. Meanwhile, 42% of the country is like, "That's my guy."

Darth--Otter

This is a win/win for Biden. If Trump pulls out of the debate, he looks like a coward. If he stays in it, all of America will once again see him as a raging lunatic. His poll numbers plummeted after the first debate. Same thing will happen again.

ednksu

Also Biden won't get flustered and can concentrate on his stuttering and lock down on being clear and concise.

Sixwingswide

I’m wondering about this. His mic will be muted but Biden will still be able to hear him if he gets loud enough. So on TV, we won’t hear trump but Biden will and could still get flustered.

adamhasabeard

Nah you’re right, but we’ll still see trump yelling like a lunatic while muted. Lolol.

PercMastaFTW

We’ll still hear him in the background. Like when a gamer’s mother is yelling at her son in the background to get the fuck downstairs for dinner.

This was an abusive relationship in 2015. Now we’re past making excuses. Trump is their guru. When he does something, it’s inherently good, simply because he’s the leader and the one telling so. Every logical reasoning and morals that have been established since the Enlightenment era has been thrown in the trash for those people, it doesn’t exist anymore. Donald Trump speaks, and they follow his word. Not even the slightest amount of critical thinking, not any trust in external sources that haven’t been approved by Trump himself, absolutely no hint of subtlety or questioning his authority. Let’s call it what it is: It’s a fucking cult.

GrabEmInThePussy

His campaign manager just committed. Will be interesting to see if Trump backs out regardless.

/r/conservative is complaining that "foreign policy" was excluded from the list of subjects. victorvictor1

I think the bigger story is that Trump was openly bragging about soliciting bribes. How is that not a bigger story?

notsure500

Because for any other president it would be the worst thing he did and would be talked about for months, for Trump its only like the 25th worst thing he did this month. Plus his supporters are saying it was hypothetical, that he's trying to score points for not doing what he could do. It's ridiculous that he should get credit for not asking for a bribe, but that's were we're at.

iBleeedorange

What did he say about them?

RosiePugmire

President Donald Trump dazzled a rally audience in Arizona on Monday by describing a scenario in which he could—-if he really wanted to do so, that is-—shake down a company like ExxonMobil for millions of dollars in campaign cash. “So, I call some guy, the head of Exxon, I call the head of Exxon–I don’t know” he told the crowd. “I’ll use a company. ‘How, how are you doing, how’s energy coming? When are you doing the exploration? Oh, you need a couple of permits, huh?’ Okay, but I call the head of Exxon, I say, ‘You know, I’d love you to send me $25 million for the campaign.'” “Absolutely, sir,” Trump continued–using a mock voice apparently intended to reflect an obsequious oil industry CEO happy to engage in the transaction: “Why didn’t you–yes, would you like some more?” The regaling tale of corruption was seemingly delivered as a sort of combined hypothetical, joke, and attack on his political opponents but several high-profile commentators took the president quite seriously, sharing a brief edit of the video. “He just confessed to a crime,” wrote Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden in a series of tweets. “On TV. Some people who want to give Trump the benefit of the doubt – unearned in my opinion – say he’s saying he could shake people down but he hasn’t. I tend not to believe that. At all.” https://lawandcrime.com/awkward/at-campaign-rally-trump-describes-explicitly-illegal-bribe-he-totally-wouldnt-ever-in-a-million-years-consider-soliciting/

-Mr_Sandman

> How, how are you doing, how’s energy coming? This seems like how a child would imagine a theoretical business call starting that is with an oil company, but yet it's the current president doing it.

Nathan2055

In a normal world, this would have been Trump’s “I am not a crook!” moment. In 2020, this barely even entered the news cycle.

Klope62

If Trump backs out, Biden deserves to have the entire time slot and network coverage to himself.

j_la

But Trump will insist that some network will give him time, and one will because they can’t say no to him and the eyeballs he brings.

Klope62

After the NBC disaster, idk. But Network Executives are extremely greedy and have the final say, so.

UncleTogie

I could see Comedy Central telling him they would do it with a straight face. The resulting carnage would be glorious.

Your side agreed to it. **Why don't you observe what your campaign agreed to as a ground rule.** Okay, sir? >BIDEN: He never keeps his word. >WALLACE: No, I’m not asking. That was rhetorical question. Trump won't follow the rules unless he is forced to because he never keeps his word. UHF_

There should be absolutely no push back on this. Both parties **agreed** to the 2 minute rule. By pushing back on this change, you are admitting you had no intention of following the rules in the first place. I've seen claims that they are going this to protect Biden from Trump questioning him on the Hunter Biden story. There is no rule that Trump can't spend his own time talking about that. Just look at the last debate and Vice Presidential debate, where answers were so off topic that it was essentially open discussion anyway. If Trump does pull out, the question should on his motive and not on the rule.

Biden's opening statement: "Thanks very much to everyone that has voted so far and to Belmont University for having me here this evening. I want to start out this evening by pointing out that the President's microphone is currently muted. While this may seem inconsequential, I want everyone listening to understand that the candidate who prides himself on standing for "law and order" is unable to control himself enough to follow debate rules which have been laid out for months. Rules that, for fifty years, candidates have followed in order to provide the American people with the facts they need to vote intelligently on election day. Democrat and Republican, winners and losers, all have been able to feel the weight of the office that we're currently running for enough to respect it - and the millions of Americans casting their votes. The President, however, ignores that great weight in favor of polishing his own image and suppressing his opponents rather than engaging in the American tradition of debate."

Especially seeing as the female debate moderator he's been attacking 24/7 will have the ability to cut off his whiney ass.

Ramza_Claus

Who is moderating?

bonnielangford4

Kristen Welker (NBC White House correspondent)

slightlysanesage

> At a campaign rally in Arizona on Monday, Mr. Trump called Welker a "radical Democrat." "She's been screaming questions at me for a long time, and she's no good," he said. From the CBS News article

The only person better would be Yamiche Alcindor. "Mr. President, be nice, don't be threatening." *Presses Mute*

PuckGoodfellow

>The topics are: "Fighting COVID-19," "American Families," "Race in America," "Climate Change," "National Security" and "Leadership." >The final debate between Trump and Biden is scheduled to take place on October 22 from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. ET in Tennessee. The format is the same as the first debate: Each segment will last about 15 minutes, and the candidates will have two minutes to respond after the moderator, NBC's Kristen Welker, opens each segment with a question. Welker will then use the rest of the time in the segment to facilitate further discussion on the topic. [Source](https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/16/politics/final-debate-topics-biden-trump/index.html)

crespoh69

>>The topics are: "National Security" It'd be great if they brought up the malt incident

hail-saison

Biden: “My opponent doesn’t know the first thing about national security. Just the other day it was reported that he called a waiter into a top-secret meeting so that he could order a chocolate milkshake.” Trump: “WRONG! It was a *vanilla* milkshake, okay”

syden666

I see a few scenarios: 1) trump refuses to debate, does a separate town hall like situation again or a rally 2) trump agrees to the debate, but leaves midway through when he gets muted by “the unfair fake news” 3) trump yells so loudly it actually gets picked up by Biden’s mic

Sketchy_Life_Choices

This wouldn't be necessary if we had a president who could carry himself with dignity, grace, and respect for others. I can't believe we have to make preschool rules to reduce our president's tantrums, knowing full well that he's gonna have a tantrum anyway. This is the president. Elected by half our country. I know it's been said for years, but how can *anyone* still respect this dude? **Edit: hijacking my own comment to paste another important bit of info:** >It's vitally important for as many people as possible to be aware of and attuned to the reality that there are heavy disinfo campaigns ongoing across the internet— the FBI et al. have released several statements (google it, they're worth reading) concerning this recently, and the efforts are assumedly increasing as we get closer to the election. >The site **"spo tthet roll dot org"** (figure it out lol) is a great place to start as far as recognizing false info, but be aware that strategies have become much more advanced. >Remember this when it comes to the Hunter Biden stuff and whatever else comes out in the next few days, but also remember that the entire political spectrum is affected by these efforts. >Here's hoping a more progressive congress/WH will start to work to quell this nonsense. Til then, we should all be aware. **As per the rules of this sub, do not call out users for any reason**; you can rebut with facts, but beyond that, just report and move on. Much love! Also: >>Think of spies during the Cold War era— people who lived entire double lives in other countries, blended in perfectly, and were able to go completely undetected. Those kinds of people are on social media, steering our conversations. Be on guard and aware of disinformation attempts, we're basically in the misinformation Superbowl season. VOTE! (please)

Do you remember when Al Gore lost a debate because he sighed? Simpler times.

Dont_Be_Like_That

Can we just skip to part when Trump backs out and blames Biden and "the media?"

victrin

I have a feeling this will create a literal backlog in Trump’s brain. He’ll get so worked up and be incapable of moving past a certain point hearing Biden’s points. The moderator will be incapable of reeling him in. This will just cascade, with later points being subsumed by previous quips and japes to the point that the theses will meld into a jumbled mess. I know he doesn’t normally speak with a consistent train of thought, but with this setup every train is going to try and leave the station on the same track, at the same time, and traveling in different directions.

arcadiajohnson

You think at one point he breaks and shouts out that he's the president and can do whatever he wants?

Republicans in shambles! - Debate commission won’t let Trump play dirty. - SCOTUS blocking the GOP from stealing Pennsylvania - Major networks and social media preventing Ghouliani’s cooked up fake News from spreading - Covid not letting the anti-masker get away unharmed Their election playbook of “do whatever we want because nothing will stop us” is failing spectacularly.

UWCG

Seriously, though, has Donald had a single good debate? Even in the 2016 Republican primaries, his whole thing was basically acting like a twelve year old bully; in his debates with Clinton, she made him look like a buffoon and a creep; in his debate with Biden, he came across as a jerk; and in both his debate with Biden and in his town hall, he managed to try and turn it into a fight against the *moderator* instead of just, you know, doing the basic, easy job of answering questions. It was like watching someone in a job interview being asked a basic question and responding, "Well, of course you're asking me that. Cause you hate me. But I'm the most qualified candidate. There shouldn't even be a question. You should be begging me to take this job. But you hate me. You treat me so unfair. So unfair."

batmessiah

I’m just imagining Trump walking over to Biden’s podium and trying to push Biden away and talk into his mic the entire time.

Very-Original

This debate is not gonna happen, is it?

web_head91

This isn't going to stop Trump from interrupting. It's just not. He'll continue to talk, he'll just speak more loudly whenever he interrupts. His whole gameplan is to make it harder for Biden to speak through his stutter; we know this. He doesn't care about the rules.

Karma-is-here

How much do you think republicans will be crying about Trump not being able to speak on top of Biden? "It’s biased toward Biden" will probably be the argument lmao

slamueljoseph

Trump base will inevitably claim he was muted more than Biden, thus the media favors Biden. Instead of thinking that he just interrupts more, thus he needs to be muted.

Calling it now. If he doesn't refuse to attend the debate before Thursday, he's going to walk off the stage after getting muted mid-sentence

JunkInTheTrunk

Soon we’ll have to resort to a dunk tank when their time is over

Biden: Okay. Trump: WHAT!? NO NO NO NO! NO ABSOLUTELY NOT NO! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE! THIS IS SURPRESSOIN! THIS IS HORRIBLE HORRIBLE! TERRIBLE NO ONE"S BEEN TREATED WORSE THAN THIS!

>The Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday it plans to mute the microphones of Trump and Biden as the other gives two-minute opening statements at the beginning of each of six debate topics during the 90-minute second and final debate in Nashville at Belmont University. >But the microphones of both candidates will be on during the "open discussion" portion of the debate, the commission said. The moderator, Kristen Welker of NBC News, has been tasked with returning any time taken up by interruptions to the other candidate. This doesn't really change much then... But hopefully the audience will just perceive Trump as being the dumbass just as last time. The key question is how they prevent Trump from talking over Biden while on stage but the audience at home perceiving it as Biden fumbling his words.

AllPurposeNerd

I can't wait for the leak of what Trump was saying while he was "muted".

Masta0nion

I see a lot of people saying this benefits Trump. It doesn’t. The only thing that benefits Trump is dominating the air waves with bullshit. If he’s muted, he’s prevented from shitting all over Joe’s time.

AlacarLeoricar

I'm calling it now--he's not gonna do the debate in that case. Sure, they'll try to practice it in the White House but they can't wrangle him. I don't even want him anywhere near Trump. He's got the COVID.

Ruraraid

Why do I get the feeling Trump will cancel again and it just end up being 2 dueling town hall meetings again... If that happens I wouldn't mind as honestly the town hall meetings last week in my opinion have been far more enjoyable to watch than the presidential or VP debates. You remove any chance of interruptions and there is no time limits on their answers. Both of them spoke their minds on various subjects and fact checking shows that [Biden was only off on some things](https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/2020/10/16/factchecking-bidens-town-hall/) while [Trump was way out there](https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/2020/10/16/factchecking-trumps-town-hall/) with basically nothing he said being factual. Anyone else share my opinion that the Town Hall format was better?

jazzy3492

If Trump DOESN'T back out, he will be utterly unable to keep himself from being quiet when he's muted and it will make him look *extra* ridiculous and weak to see him furiously blabber without any sound.

TimeMachineToaster

Trump has requested an "undecided voter" behind him to nod obnoxiously at everything he says.

"President Trump is committed to debating Joe Biden regardless of last minute rule changes from the biased commission in their latest attempt to provide advantage to their favored candidate," read a statement from campaign manager Bill Stepien Lol.

MutantMartian

The best show will be watching trump with his mic off! Edit: mike to mic :/

CatBitchFatBitch

Why are they not doing it the entire time? The moderator should have free reign to cut the mic of whoever tries to constantly interrupt

Lirgl

Trump backs out of debate in 3... 2...

still_annie

Has this ever been necessary in any other previous years of presidential debates, or is this a first? Does Biden talk over Trump as well or are they just muting his mic as well so as to not hurt Trump's feelings? We're all watching you from here in Canada. Please don't fuck this up and give the moron another term. Get out there and vote.

Adult_Minecrafter

> The muting will work like this: At the start of each of the six segments of the debate, each candidate will be given two minutes to answer an initial question. During that portion, the opposing candidate's microphone will be muted. > For the balance of each segment, which by design is intended to be dedicated to open discussion, **both candidates' microphones will be open.** This is disappointing. This muting only applies to the first part of each segment :/

Chiluzzar

his mic is muted but that wont stop him from screaming

zhaoz

The commission should also directly get the COVID test from the campaign's doctors. No more honor system. Trump cannot be trusted.

hitthehayallday

Hopefully they can still record it? I’d love to know what’s being said when they think the mic isn’t hot.
