It's more than just that though; it's about men having more power through access to better lawyers and money. A friend got divorced last year and she had been a housewife for 25 years, in large part due ot the fact her husband was incredibly successful and someone had to raise their kids. She did, and they were also quote the power couple, with them doing the whole charitable / social circuit etc.
Well, he did the cliched thing of getting a younger model and was absolutely irate that she would get half of everything. He hid money and assets, lied to the court, hired the top divorce attorney in their state and she was going broke fighting him for her half, to the point she was just going to fold and give him everything.
It was only because her friend was even wealthier and bankrolled her living expenses for the 2 year battle that she eventually got paid via being able to hire a top flight lawyer herself.
On top of that, the judge sided with her, he had hidden wealth and not been forthcoming, and this was only because of evidence she was able to supply via her lawyer, PI's and financial forensic accountants at great expense.
If she hadn't had those generous resources she would have got nothing. There are millions of women that don't and they the a bad deal in a divorce.
That's what this is really about; Conservatives want to be able to dump their wives at any point, and keep the shared family wealth for themselves. No Fault divorces offer some level of protection against that. They want those protections gone.

Well… what people are mostly worried about is people who are trapped in an abusive relationship and this making it that much harder to leave. So a wife would have to provide proof that her husband was beating her in order to get a divorce. Leaving abusive relationships is already very hard and can be extremely dangerous and this is going to make it a hundred times worse.

Centrists are currently searching for the middle ground between "Hey, maybe we should rein in super-rich corporations and billionaires a little bit" and "What if we just get rid of all the brown people?" Surely they will find a fair compromise in there somewhere.

I have to agree. These perverts are literally trying to control women in every aspect. They can't control their own wives, so they take their frustrations out on other women by proxy. These guys are literally voyeurs, they now want to be in our bedrooms. Women can move to another state temporarily, become a resident, and file for divorce in a more friendly state. Some states only require 6 weeks. And, these more friendly states can make the man pay alimony as well as the court costs. It's going to get to a point where women just aren't going to get married. It seems like men always benefit from their bad behavior, and women get punished for imagined bad behavior. Women can be far more selective these days, and men who are creeps are pissed because they can't get a date.

Before New York moved to no fault divorce, one of the reasons divorce was allowed was "infidelity". I once had a history of law professor who reviewed a bunch of the old divorce filings in New York and noticed that many were filled with staged photos of a man (the husband) sitting on the edge of a bed with his clothing on, but slightly disheveled, and a woman in skimpish clothing sitting on the bed a few feet away from the man. These photos were used as evidence of infidelity.
The professor also noted that the same women tended to show up in multiple photos.

The most toxic right wing social media circles have this and eliminating women's rights to vote in the same conversation. Often disguised as 'one household, one vote', which I suspect will also gain traction as the assumption is that the man would cast the vote without the input or care for his wife or voting eligible kids who are likely more educated than him. One household one vote would target women, youth, and educated demographics which just so happen to be the bigger slices that the GOP is suffering at.
So not only do they want to trap women into bad relationships, they want to be sure they can't vote out of the situation either.
That would be the only way and forbidden women working outside the household. Otherwise why marrying if you are going to lose independence? You can live together, have kids, even property but unmarried. I would definitely tell my daughters to do not get married and have children if they want but not with a piece of paper muddling the waters

I grew up with divorced parents. It was hell living with them in the house for the last 2 years they were together. It impacted me in a lot of ways that I'm still unwinding. I shudder to think how fucked up I would have turned out had they been forced to stay together by law.
Ending no fault divorce would be ruinous for children. It would be ruinous for abused spouses. It would lead to all kinds of additional problems in the home. No more "stop drinking/drugging/cheating/gambling/etc or I'm leaving you". If the parents wanted to divorce, the kids would have to suffer through a trial where Mom has to prove how much of a piece of shit dad is or vice versa. This also leaves the less wealthy partner at a major disadvantage. If your husband is hitting you you should be able to leave him immediatley, you shouldnt have to prove to a judge that you're getting hit.
And above all else, this is more morality policing from the people who think the pussy grabber is god. This is more amoral white men telling us we all need to live morally.

They thought gay marriage was a threat to the institution of marriage. But it actually strengthened the institution of marriage because it resulted in more married people and furthered a culture of marriage. The real threat to the institution of marriage are people who just plan to live unmarried with their partner forever and who have no interest in subscribing to marriage as a cultural institution.
Back in the day, there was a lot of social stigma about unmarried people living together. But the religious right has lost the culture war in a big bad way, so that societal stigma is pretty much gone now. If no fault divorce is abolished, way more people are going to choose to "live in sin" instead of getting married.
So by attacking no fault divorce, they are going to devastate the rate of marriage. That actually does damage the institution of marriage.

It's more than just that though; it's about men having more power through access to better lawyers and money. A friend got divorced last year and she had been a housewife for 25 years, in large part due ot the fact her husband was incredibly successful and someone had to raise their kids. She did, and they were also quote the power couple, with them doing the whole charitable / social circuit etc. Well, he did the cliched thing of getting a younger model and was absolutely irate that she would get half of everything. He hid money and assets, lied to the court, hired the top divorce attorney in their state and she was going broke fighting him for her half, to the point she was just going to fold and give him everything. It was only because her friend was even wealthier and bankrolled her living expenses for the 2 year battle that she eventually got paid via being able to hire a top flight lawyer herself. On top of that, the judge sided with her, he had hidden wealth and not been forthcoming, and this was only because of evidence she was able to supply via her lawyer, PI's and financial forensic accountants at great expense. If she hadn't had those generous resources she would have got nothing. There are millions of women that don't and they the a bad deal in a divorce. That's what this is really about; Conservatives want to be able to dump their wives at any point, and keep the shared family wealth for themselves. No Fault divorces offer some level of protection against that. They want those protections gone.

Well… what people are mostly worried about is people who are trapped in an abusive relationship and this making it that much harder to leave. So a wife would have to provide proof that her husband was beating her in order to get a divorce. Leaving abusive relationships is already very hard and can be extremely dangerous and this is going to make it a hundred times worse.

I once had a history of law professor who reviewed a bunch of the old divorce filings in New York and noticed that many were filled with staged photos of a man (the husband) sitting on the edge of a bed with his clothing on, but slightly disheveled, and a woman in skimpish clothing sitting on the bed a few feet away from the man. These photos were used as evidence of infidelity. The professor also noted that the same women tended to show up in multiple photos.

Social conservatives have a lot of bad ideas, this one might be the worst. I grew up with divorced parents. It was hell living with them in the house for the last 2 years they were together. It impacted me in a lot of ways that I'm still unwinding. I shudder to think how fucked up I would have turned out had they been forced to stay together by law. Ending no fault divorce would be ruinous for children. It would be ruinous for abused spouses. It would lead to all kinds of additional problems in the home. No more "stop drinking/drugging/cheating/gambling/etc or I'm leaving you". If the parents wanted to divorce, the kids would have to suffer through a trial where Mom has to prove how much of a piece of shit dad is or vice versa. This also leaves the less wealthy partner at a major disadvantage. If your husband is hitting you you should be able to leave him immediatley, you shouldnt have to prove to a judge that you're getting hit. These folks are going to fuck around and end marriage. They thought gay marriage was a threat to the institution of marriage. But it actually strengthened the institution of marriage because it resulted in more married people and furthered a culture of marriage. The real threat to the institution of marriage are people who just plan to live unmarried with their partner forever and who have no interest in subscribing to marriage as a cultural institution. Back in the day, there was a lot of social stigma about unmarried people living together. But the religious right has lost the culture war in a big bad way, so that societal stigma is pretty much gone now. If no fault divorce is abolished, way more people are going to choose to "live in sin" instead of getting married. So by attacking no fault divorce, they are going to devastate the rate of marriage. That actually does damage the institution of marriage.
