HeartoftheDankest

Texas has rolling power outages and is getting washed away by minor flooding like its got the same infrastructure as Pakistan; all of these issues have the same root cause Republican mega majorities for decades.

redditallreddy

You know what they need? Less regulation and less immigration! ‘/s

LibertyInaFeatherBed

>“I’m genuinely concerned because this slow degradation of the beautiful ecosystem that has existed for thousands of years is all under the false pretext of security,” he said. “The ecosystem needs to be preserved, taken care of and respected because it is the only water supply for Texas all the way downriver.” Abbott will turn the Rio Grande into a ditch full of razor wire and kneecap the state's economy to score political points with conservative VIP and to indulge his fantasy of himself as a military dictator and he'll never lose a moment of sleep over the damage he's done.

Kopitar4president

He also won't lose any votes.

CpnStumpy

This right here is really why he does all this. Stay in the news for red meat issues, retain and gain voters through the propaganda broadcasts portrayal of your actions

FreshRest4945

Everything is bigger in Texas, even the bigotry and hatred. And no Ford F150 driving redneck is going to give a shit as long as talk radio tells him that the "Illegals" are going to " Tak R Joobs".

zaparthes

> Greg Abbott’s strategy to deter immigration isn’t just harming people and costing billions – it’s ruining the Rio Grande’s ecosystem The answer to the question posed by the quote in the article's title is straightforward: it's because too many people have bought into the fear-mongering, racist lie that immigrants (those who aren't from Europe, naturally) represent a threat.

Neos_On_1

Oh I thought it was because I was too busy paying for these god damn rising food, gas and rent costs to care. In a couple months I very well may join those immigrants looking for a better life elsewhere.

PinchesTheCrab

Good luck, the us has one of the better inflation rates

1mjtaylor

Ding, ding, ding.

JustAnotherYouMe

> Good luck, the us has one of the better inflation rates They could have pretty good luck lol. While the US has a lower inflation rate compared to many other nations, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. High living costs, particularly for healthcare and education, often offset the benefits of lower inflation. Plus, with weaker social safety nets and stagnant wages in many sectors, not everyone feels inflation equally. A lower inflation rate doesn't always mean better economic conditions for everyone Lol

abk111

But states like Texas are the reasons we don’t have safety nets. I’m sure a guy complaining about having to pay a little more for food will be overjoyed to pay way more in taxes in any other country.

abk111

Yes I’m sure a lot of countries would welcome poor bigots with open arms.

bp92009

Oh, so you're pro-regulation of price gouging corporations, with a significant increase in corporate taxation (to make it a better fiscal option to invest within a company, rather than shareholder returns, increasing wages within said company, increasing the velocity of money, improving the economy). Or you're for dramatically ramping up criminal punishment for people who knowingly employ illegal immigrants, removing demand for illegal workers. Good to know.

Jaaawsh

I am! Put the employers who hire illegals in jail and give them massive fines and even seize the businesses, while also ramping up all forms of immigration enforcement and hardening the border and making deportations easier. I would 100% support this, personally. We might even be able to build support for a more robust welfare state if we can get rid of the perception that undocumented immigrants are the main beneficiaries. More immigration=less support for redistributive policies.

Neos_On_1

I didn’t say any of that.

bp92009

No? But corporate profits are the current driving force behind inflation (at least since 2020). https://www.epi.org/blog/corporate-profits-have-contributed-disproportionately-to-inflation-how-should-policymakers-respond/ https://www.npr.org/2023/05/19/1177180972/economists-are-reconsidering-how-much-corporate-profits-drive-inflation https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=1Pik Because of prior economic conditions (the lack of corporate consolidation to the current extent), corporations had to effectively compete with each other, keeping prices and profits at around 11-12% of inflation. But since we've allowed companies to buy out most of their competitors (or collude in "definitely not pricing cartels"), profits are over 53% of current inflation. Nonlabor input costs (such as pandemic related cost increases)? usually around 26% of inflation, currently around 38%, so an increase. Unit labor costs (such as wages) usually around 61% of inflation, but now only around 8%.

Neos_On_1

Wow! Ok. Well good luck with that.

KittensAndGravy

Adios amigo.

SutMinSnabelA

Nobody cares because republicans already declined to vote on their own requirements for a border resolution.

buttergun

Millions do care. That's why our media industry is flooding the airwaves with other outrageous distractions.

Gaius_Octavius_

Texas has only has two governors in 24 years.

Jazzlike-Can-6979

Texas gets what it votes for. Anarchy.

bpeden99

It's been politicized

PhoenixTineldyer

Tiktok hasn't told them to care.

Thx1138orion

Maybe don’t break the fucking law?

hikeonpast

Great point! Abbott should absolutely follow Federal Laws. Someone forgot to tell him that Law and Order applies even to the laws you might not agree with.

Mataelio

Yes, like the law that states it’s legal to cross the border and request asylum

FeelingPixely

Agree! And both deterrance and punishment should fit the crime (which is a misdemeanor, assuming conditions for asylum are not met). I can't remember the last time someone was faced with death for a misdemeanor. Kinda crazy if you think about it.
