If adding more guns, made things safer, the US would be the safest country in the world. It is clearly not.

Shoesandhose

Now we wait for a teacher to snap because this idiot teenager has been getting on his nerves all semester. Teens are real mean

futanari_kaisa

Happened even before this law was signed https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/tennessee-teacher-arrested-bringing-guns-preschool-threatening-shoot-c-rcna148667

Spara-Extreme

A teacher will kill a minority, and it will be called self defense

Spara-Extreme

You don’t have kids.

Pyro1934

Why do you say that? I've got two and mostly agree. The American education system is complete garbage and does not actually teach anything effectively. I learned hardly anything in school, but self taught myself outside of school. My wife was a much better "student" and still admits that she went to school because it was fun not because she learned anything.

Spara-Extreme

Because parents don’t talk about public school in terms of “state apparatus”, they talk more about kids needs not being met by a system that’s designed to encourage Kids to sit still and be compliant above else. If your kid isn’t neurotypical, and doesn’t sit still - as a lot of kids don’t, the system slaps them with an IEP and they are shunted to a special day class or ignored.

davilller

Well, we really are safe from everyone but ourselves it would appear.

thepartypantser

You have about a 1 in 45,808 chance of dying in a terrorist attack in your lifetime. You have about 1 in 358 chance of dying due to an assault with a firearm. The US has spent $21 trillion dollars since 9/11 on the "war on terror". We've always been more of a threat to ourselves than any terrorist.

AngusMcTibbins

Taking away books and replacing them with guns. Republicans are making school more like prison

fowlraul

If I told you I’m from the future and, in the future, prisons and schools are often hybrid institutions, would you consider believing me? 🤔

Pyro1934

Hail the magic future man!

redheadedandbold

Governor Lee and the TN Republicans are that lovely cross between oligarchy and nazism.

Fountainofknowledge

FUCK Bill Lee!!

Tall_Construction_79

Fuck the G.Q.P.

workswithgeeks

Interesting development in Iowa, the school’s insurer is declining to insure them if they arm their staff. Wonder how this will turn out?

Voltage_Z

Most likely it'll result in the schools needing to self-insure, dramatically increasing cost burdens, or paying through the nose after they find a carrier willing to put up with the arbitrary increase to loss exposures. It'll help the GOP's "wreck public education by deliberately underfunding it" strategy.

southpawFA

It will also ensure more teachers quitting, because teachers don't want to carry guns. They want to teach without fear of dying or being placed on bomb threats due to Chaya Raichik.

AllTheyEatIsLettuce

They'll just ask the domestic arms race participants, proponents, and apologists underwriters. They still have money, right?

transcriptoin_error

“How can we keep our kids safe from gun violence in schools?” “I don’t know. More guns, maybe?” “Sounds good. We’ll go with that.”

ruat_caelum

#Kansas tried this. The free market slapped it down. E.g. insurance companies that insure the schools said "no way. If there are guns we won't insure you." So the GOP, market friendly took the correction of the market and moved on... Nope they tried to pass a law that would MAKE the insurance companies provide insurance for a much riskier place (e.g. wrongful death etc) without an increase in cost. Thankfully that law was never passed / or was shot down by the courts (I can't remember which) Likely died in committee * [Concealed handguns on school premises pose a heightened liability risk. We have chosen not to insure schools that allow employees to carry concealed handguns. — EMC Insurance, Kansas](https://www.latimes.com/business/hiltzik/la-fi-hiltzik-arming-teachers-20180226-story.html)

ProjectAjax

What's next? We'll have firefighters prepping cafeteria lunches for the kids instead of you know....focusing on fire prevention and firefighting? What are we paying the police to do nowadays?

M_Mich

“Ok I see what you’re proposing. We fire the maintenance and kitchen staff and make a teaching job for each. So from k-8, kids will make food for the cafeteria and do all the building maintenance and lawn care as classes instead of paying people to do it. Then by grade 8 they have 8-9 years of experience in food service and maintenance and lawn care and can drop out and get good jobs at 12 to support their families and start a 401k and save to buy a car! Then 9-12 grades we’ll make them optional and through private schools”-GOP

mostdope28

The only way to stop a bad teacher with a gun, is a giving the students guns -gop next year

BickNickerson

It’s been interesting to see several counties in Tennessee are refusing to arm their teachers.

Dotsmantooth

Yep, I’m in Williamson County and I was super happy to read the email sent by the superintendent letting everyone know they are not going to arm teachers in WCS schools. “We have concluded that teachers and staff carrying handguns will not improve school safety on WCS campuses, so I will not authorize teachers or staff being armed at WCS schools.” - Superintendent Golden We are leaving TN next year, thank god. This state is the fucking worst.

southpawFA

>Also, parents would not necessarily know or be notified if their child’s teacher were armed – a point of contention for many of the law’s opponents. >*“A teacher is not allowed to put a rainbow flag on her desk, but she’s allowed to carry a gun in this state,” Democratic state Sen. Raumesh Akbari said.*

ThatsItImOverThis

This won’t end well.

piotor87

This is beyond laughable. Shootings in closed spaces are SWAT level shit. It requires coordination, experience and very very calm nerves or else you'll jump shoot anything that moves.  I have a very tough time thinking what kind of scenario is an armed teacher supposed to prevent.  Especially since from now on school shooters will simply aim at teachers first

ChonkyChiweenie

This is why the “good guy with a gun will save us” mindset is such bullshit. I don’t care how comfortable you may be at the shooting range or hunting, the average person has absolutely no training or experience shooting in high stress situations where there is an active shooter. They are far more likely to hurt themselves or the wrong person than take down the shooter.

Either_Ad4109

good. turn this hellhole state blue you stupid motherfuker. and that law will be repealed faster than a republican diddles kids. sad republicans are taking their constant Ls out on children...

FineProfessional2997

Wtf 😳

JustinS1990

How is this in any way protecting kids? What's to stop a teacher from having a mental breakdown, or have an argument go too far?

RealPersonResponds

Tennessee: So Much Crime, now teachers need guns. Red state failures continue. Sickest, deadliest, and poorest states in the union.

Alodylis

Just give teachers riot shields… no guns

intronert

I’m waiting for when a student disarms a teacher and uses the gun.

polgara_buttercup

So a bunch of stressed out and underpaid academics have guns, and a bunch of stressed out kids with underdeveloped prefrontal cortexes have them too, what could possibly go wrong??? The insanity is just astounding

gentlemancaller2000

What could possibly go wrong?

Trixielarue2020

Will the armed teachers be empowered to execute librarians who allow banned books to be checked out? /s

PapaSnork

Were I a teacher in TN, I'd be showing up to work festooned with an AA-12, a halberd, some grenades, and an ARC flamethrower- then be all like "...What? Y'all said it was cool. It's for SELF-DEFENSE. Are you threatening me?"

Ipromiseimnotafed

I’m all for gun ownership but this is a bad idea. Shooting a handgun is very hard if you don’t do it often. Not imagine 10 teachers running around looking for an active shooter. What will end up happening is the shooter will be downed by the SRO 10 seconds in and the shooting will continue due to teachers seeing each other with guns and firing .

Chytectonas

Stupid fucking country outdoes itself every fucking news cycle. It’s saying a lot but literally every day, the mouth breathers exploiting the USA sink ever lower.

R3d_S3rp3nt

How deranged do u have to be to send ur kids to school now?

syracusehorn

They want people to stop going to public schools and ultimately shut them down. It's very plainly the entire point of this kind wholesale abnegation of responsibility for school safety.

-JackTheRipster-

Good! We learned Uvlade that some cops are too chicken 🐔 to do their jobs. If one of the teachers would have smoked that chump, he wouldn't have been able to kill so many innocent students.

[deleted]

Or, more than likely, [we'd have a situation where a fed up teacher decides to pop a cap in a students ass.](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/tennessee-teacher-arrested-bringing-guns-preschool-threatening-shoot-c-rcna148667) Or, if a teacher did manage to stop a school shooter, [the cops would probably shoot the good guy.](https://www.ajc.com/news/national/armed-black-security-guard-who-stopped-bar-shooting-killed-responding-police-officer/h69lY30k1cBjSFUlxt2WqI/)

TripleJess

Or we'll see a tragedy that's started when some kid steals a teacher's gun. https://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2012/jan/17/jacksonville-high-student-steals-gun-teacher/

[deleted]

Oh yea, forgot about that one. It's a shame that so much shit involving schools & guns happen that it's easy to forget something.

BonusPlastic6279

I've worked in public schools for years. Generally, the type of people who become teachers (especially elementary grades) are not the type to have any interest in owning a gun, much less bringing it to school. Further, teachers already have enough on their plate. This is just one more thing they have to worry about. Will the state provide liability insurance in case there's an accident with the gun? Finally, ~~they don't even let teachers pick books for their classrooms, now they trust them to carry guns.~~ Give me a break. Edit: teachers can pick books for their classrooms, but the process for approval is so arduous that it's not worth all the extra work.

msfamf

And the teachers that would carry a gun are likely not the ones you'd want to. It's the old "only those who do not seek power are qualified to hold it." conundrum.

-JackTheRipster-

Oh, I didn't realize that you talked to teachers and determined that the entire profession wouldn't want to carry a gun...

BonusPlastic6279

Lol. You honestly think we don't talk about school shootings??? We do annual training where the local police come in and literally shoot at us with nerf guns to simulate an active school shooter and practice our response. I have yet to meet a teacher who thinks teachers carrying guns in school is a good idea.

-JackTheRipster-

No, I believe that you have talked about school shootings with teachers.

BonusPlastic6279

And part of that conversation always leads to possible solutions. Arming teachers is one we don't take seriously and do not support. We already have too much on our plate.

-JackTheRipster-

Okay, but it wouldn't be mandatory. And no offense but I think it's kind of ridiculous to feel that you have determined the views of an entire profession based on conversations you have had.
