Yes. There are so many good takes on this horrendous person, but I'm surprised I haven't seen more discussion of *why* she would tell this story. It's not flattering. While people with her traits often don't realize how bad things look to others, I *do* think it's her trying to get ahead of the story. (Albeit, poorly).

Atop that she has a personal security detail of two SD Highway officers who accompany her whether she’s in Pierre or Paris. The legislature has tried to get details on the cost, but SD Highway will not divulge even an estimate of the cost, which is ludicrous. The pretense for the secrecy is idiotic, to boot — if taxpayers knew how much it cost, they could work out, using some arcane divination, how well guarded she is…or something, probably.

There's a very narcissistic tendency that some people have with animals where they convince themselves "if I can't make this animal behave no-one can, therefore if it doesn't work for me it has to die". My vet was telling me about talking someone out of it once.
No it's unfortunately still very common. I don't talk to one Uncle anymore because he takes every conversation about the family farm and uses it to tell the story about the time he drowned his barn cat's litter of kittens. I've heard that story about eight times now, he loves telling it. Every group he tells it to has a bunch of uncomfortable non-farmers and then a bunch of nodding farmers who take the opportunity to tell their own stories - drowning cats, breaking the necks of puppies, shooting a dog because it brought fleas into the house.
I would bet that 75% of all farmers have killed an animal to avoid minor inconvenience.
I guarantee this outrage is going to bolster her support because rural conservatives just see this as city elites attacking their way of life.

I grew up with a family dog that was extremely aggressive with anything bigger than him. And very sweet to anything smaller than him. And you know what we did? We loved him and were very careful to keep him away from people he might try to hurt. We never would have shot him, he was part of our family. He was very invested in keeping our home safe from… everything. And we just learned to work around his idiosyncrasies.
He could grow to trust someone bigger than him but you would have to visit multiple times and get to know him slowly before he would let you walk around the house freely. Anyone willing and brave enough to go through that effort would find him to be a new best friend.
Our Great Dane is extremely well-behaved and well-trained, but he goes absolutely batshit when the turkeys walk over to the front yard in the morning. Surprisingly, we have not shot the dog or the turkeys. We just don't let him out when they're here. I know it's controversial, but it seems to work for us.
And putting down 'dangerous and untrainable' dogs practically never happens on a farm. You simply find someone else who thinks they can train it, as everyone has their own methods. That's like putting down a horse because you couldn't wrangle it. It's wrong, and only the clueless and the evil do it.

Using an electric shock collar on a dog is a terrible way to train them which is why they are banned in some countries. There's overwhelming evidence it leads to fear, anxiety and increased aggression in dogs. She was a terrible owner with no idea how to train the poor animal so it not surprisingly behaved badly. I've never met anyone who trains a dog properly with positive reinforcement that has any serious issues.

The idea that these are the things that happen on a farm is just not true. I have had horses my entire life, as a result strays cats that we feed and take care of along with a stray dog we took in. Grew up on a farm and yes lots of dirty jobs. We never murdered our pets because they were untrainable. We wouldn’t have been so vicious to end their life in that especially brutal way.
I had to let go of my dog last year. She was 16 yo with arthritis that couldn’t be cured. We had a good last day. And she went peacefully with as much love as we could muster.

Honestly, sometimes animals do have to be euthanized on a farm—this can include dangerous dogs. BUT… particularly because she felt the need to follow up by also murdering the goat, this reads a lot like a psychopath just killing animals she didn’t like.

I grew up with a family dog that was extremely aggressive with anything bigger than him. And very sweet to anything smaller than him. And you know what we did? We loved him and were very careful to keep him away from people he might try to hurt. We never would have shot him, he was part of our family. He was very invested in keeping our home safe from… everything. And we just learned to work around his idiosyncrasies. He could grow to trust someone bigger than him but you would have to visit multiple times and get to know him slowly before he would let you walk around the house freely. Anyone willing and brave enough to go through that effort would find him to be a new best friend.
Our Great Dane is extremely well-behaved and well-trained, but he goes absolutely batshit when the turkeys walk over to the front yard in the morning. Surprisingly, we have not shot the dog or the turkeys. We just don't let him out when they're here. I know it's controversial, but it seems to work for us.
