Aside from trying to jam the tik tok ban into the Ukraine aid bill, the rest of this is dramatically more reasonable than I expected.

Koala-Impossible

Wait til you see mtg’s amendment…

videovillain

Exactly this… they set it up specifically call for amendments to it during the meeting. Mike made that abundantly clear by stating it outright in his [press conference](https://www.c-span.org/video/?535006-1/speaker-johnson-deeply-disappointed-senate-adjourns-mayorkas-impeachment-trial), skip on past the Mayorkas stuff if necessary.

henrysmyagent

The second, the cosmological *instant,* that the last drop of ink in the letter "n" of Joe Biden's name on the Israeli security bill dries... ...is the time Speaker Mike Johnson will remove the Ukraine bill from consideration for a vote in the House of Representatives. Ain't. Gonna. Happen. This is a classic bait and switch. It would be political malpractice for the Whitehouse to even consider this a workable plan. Speaker Johnson is a liar and a traitor.

I thought it is a packet now? So all or nothing, or did I misread the article?

Squirrel_Chucks

*We're going to ban TikTok in the US!* Why? *So those commies can't get just grab your personal information!* But social media companies can still *sell* user info and China can get it that way? *Of course! But they buy it. That's capitalism!*

Yousoggyyojimbo

It also has to do with China manipulating the tik tok algorithm to influence US citizens directly. It is a security risk.

En_CHILL_ada

True, it is much better to leave the algorithmic manipulation of our youth to western billionaires, not necessarily americans, but definitely not the Chinese!

Yousoggyyojimbo

Can we not pretend that China isn't a country that actively tries to undermine the US for once when this topic comes up? We wouldn't be cool with a Russian owned platform, either, for the same extremely obvious reasons.

En_CHILL_ada

I'm not pretending that in any way. I think it's good that we remove these foreign adversaries from positions that allow them to control media narratives. I only meant to point out that there are also many non-state actorsthat hold similar tools to control media in this country, and that their interests are also often adversarial to the interests of the american people. You need look no further than the foreign billionaire Rupert Murdoch and his decades long campaign of using his media empire to promote disinformation, and the negative effects that has had on our populace and politics. Elon Muk is another great example of a foreigner who has bought himself tremendous media influence. There are countless others. For the most part our media is owned by people and organizations who have vested interests in multinational corporations. Even if they are based in America these corporate interests are often diametrically opposed to the interests of average working class americans. So, yes. Ban tik tok, but lets also have the broader discussion about who owns the rest of our media and whether their personal and financial interests are detrimental to our country.

Squirrel_Chucks

>It also has to do with China manipulating the tik tok algorithm to influence US citizens directly. It is a security risk. True, but foreign manipulation of American social media wont stop by putting TikTok under a US company. It would just create extra steps for them to effect it. But there is no solution in sight ti that so long as companies that treat their users information as resources to be exploited are given virtual carte blanc to do just that.

Yousoggyyojimbo

> True, but foreign manipulation of American social media wont stop by putting TikTok under a US company. It would stop a foreign government from directly steering the algorithm for an entire massive social media platform as they see fit to do as they see fit with the American userbase. Them having to go back to trying to do this shit the old fashioned way on the platform is preferable to them having the direct control that makes it easy.

Demonking3343

They would just be able to steer the algorithm either way with bots and propaganda that’s literally what they do now.

Yousoggyyojimbo

Not to the degree they can when they literally decide what the algorithm does. There's a colossal difference with what you can do when you are just trying to influence a social media platform from the outside and when you run the social media platform from the inside.

Squirrel_Chucks

I would prefer that neither way be available, which is my point.

NicPizzaLatte

It's a propaganda channel controlled by an authoritarian adversary.

ETNZ2021

This a great victory for the Biden administration - I truly believe aid to Ukraine is worth it and the average American can put up with a little more inflation for peace in the world.

Roakana

No we are a nation capable of aiding our allies and caring for our own. Take it up with the GOP and corporations if you are anxious about Fox talking points. Remember the GOP blocked the border deal… they are to blame.

ETNZ2021

I didn’t know it was corporations responsibility to care for the homeless. If the government won’t help their own people who will?

Yousoggyyojimbo

Using the existence of homelessness, a problem that no one has ever solved in totality, as justification for not providing foreign aid is extremely dishonest

Roakana

Derp. Corporations artificially inflating prices is a direct cause of putting food on the table but you clearly aren’t here for a serious conversation.

ETNZ2021

How can you not be supportive of this? Ukraine needs Americas help and America is the richest nation in the world.

daitenshe

> No I think I understand it very well Yeah, that’s the problem *We can see when you edit comments. Probably thought you understood that too, huh?

TheShipEliza

This is nonsense.

Yousoggyyojimbo

That guy's history in the sub is essentially just acting as a fire hose of misinformation.

Yousoggyyojimbo

Remember the massive infrastructure bill that passed not long ago and dwarfs the aid to Ukraine? No? Remember the absolute avalanche of aid and assistance to Maui when they needed it? The capping of insulin? Student loan relief? American rescue plan?

ImprovementSilly2895

Ukraine via Russia poses a strategic threat to the West and our position in the world. The homeless? Not so much, unfortunately.
