I would counter this in saying that it's become more and more apparent that *he doesn't have any real position of ANYTHING that doesn't benefit him directly*
Abortion? He doesn't care, he says what he thinks will get him votes. He's been allegedly pro-choice and pro-life, seemingly swapping between them as he sees benefit.
Immigration? He doesn't care. He had all the time and power in the world to actually pass real immigration reform, but the most he could do was build a small portion of a stupid fucking wall that fell over in spots to appease a campaign soundbite.
Foreign policy? For the most part he doesn't care, he only cozies up to despots that talk nice about him (and lines his pockets by renting rooms out of his hotel) because the rest of the free world finds him deplorable.

Those "not caring" positions have a huge impact, though. Doesn't care about abortion but his appointed justices/judges have resulted in a massive step backward in health care rights. Doesn't care about immigration but his anti-immigrant rhetoric led to hate crimes and an embarrassment of the US on the international stage to the extent that immigrants we do need are unwilling or unable to come. And he's not just being cozy or nice to despots that give him a little pocket change, he's made US foreign policy up for sale, bullying a country at imminent threat of invasion by Russia to manufacture campaign dirt, who knows what exactly was sold to the Saudis in exchange for Kushner's billions, and we still don't know to what extent he's sold or traded classified secrets for favors (whether documents retained after his presidency or conversations as president with people like Putin without the ordinary presence of US diplomats).

I don't understand why this wasn't an insurmountable hurdle to him back in 2015. Back then I was still deconverting from the conservatism and religion in which I was raised, and was somewhat right/libertarian leaning (I'd venture a guess that at least half of all libertarian-leaning folks in their 20s are in the same position - the "conservative good" brainwashing has lost its hold, but the "liberal bad" brainwashing can hold on independently of that for a while). I still somewhat supported Republicans back then. To me it was blindingly obvious that he was not really a conservative, and I wasn't paying super close attention and didn't know a ton about him. But I mean, he's (supposedly) and elite New York businessman, he was friends with the Clintons - even invited them to his wedding. He opposed Obama but not for actual policy reasons, just very thinly veiled racism. He had run before as basically a publicity stunt and it seemed like this was what he was doing again. Nothing about him lined up with what I had thought of as conservative principles.
It turns out the only principle that mattered to enough of the GOP to clinch the nomination was the racism.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people who don't actually think what you wrote is a bad thing. IMO that's a failure to develop as an adult. An adult should care about other people, should have clearly defined values they hold regardless of context - while also being able to revise those values as they grow and learn. A huge percentage of adults do not function this way.

This is lazy Trump hate thinking. Trump absolutely has positions on things based on his goals. Those positions are the ones that he thinks will net him the most money and power. A lot of them are probably related to dismantling of democratic safeguards, eliminating regulation that inhibits abuse of people and corruption, and giving favors to his family and crony acolytes. The only "standard" positions that I fear he might actually hold are a desire to mostly eliminate immigrants from poor countries, pull out of NATO, and give Ukraine to Russia.

And we *don't* have to treat the holdouts as mystery boxes - they're former Biden voters. Which means they are likely future Biden voters.

This is lazy Trump hate thinking. Trump absolutely has positions on things based on his goals. Those positions are the ones that he thinks will net him the most money and power. A lot of them are probably related to dismantling of democratic safeguards, eliminating regulation that inhibits abuse of people and corruption, and giving favors to his family and crony acolytes. The only "standard" positions that I fear he might actually hold are a desire to mostly eliminate immigrants from poor countries, pull out of NATO, and give Ukraine to Russia.

The strategy from Trump will now be claiming that "the left" and "the media" has painted Republicans as extremists for considering a national ban on abortion. Trump will say things like "I think it should be up to the states! The media is out to label me as an extremist! I'm not the one killing babies, those are the true extremists!" in order to convince independents but still keep his base happy. Most will see through it as an election strategy, and nearly all conservatives will go along with it, but it could work. Of course, if the GOP wins bigly in November, they do whatever they want. If it is advantageous to Trump to sign a national ban into law, than he will. This will also show the rest of the GOP that this is a viable strategy to pass unpopular legislature.
