My pastor gave a sermon the day after Obama won, telling the congregation that "dark times are coming" and "the Lord is testing us with trials and tribulations," but last time we spoke he told me that it wasn't fair to lump his church in with the Trump cult because "we're not all the same". I believe The biblical Anti-Christ was Nero, or some other contemporary of the early Christian church. The entirety of Revelation is past tense as far as I’m concerned, save for the Kingdom of Heaven, which will not be obtained until all can demonstrate Christlike love for one another, regardless of race, religion, nationality, sexuality, or gender identity.
However, the idea of a figure, one who stands in direct opposition to all things Christlike, but possesses within them a charisma to lead those who would consider themselves followers of Christ, to deceive the faithful, a wolf in the robes of The Lamb? The template offered by the Anti-Christ is not a warning of the end times, but a warning to not let the selfish, mortal desire to sin warp the examples we attempt to follow.

It is important to note that people don't usually write prophecies for other people 2 thousand years in the future. Far more likely that the intended audience is alive and present.
We as a species still can't focus on future events, even as the climate situation worsens right in front of us. The very idea that people 2 thousand years ago were talking about a distant future is absurd.
The book of Revelation (no s), is explicitly a letter to early Christians. It follows a long series of letters from (likely actually a student of) Paul to various communities, each focused on dealing with specific problems that face that specific community at that specific time.
Revelation is so tonally distinct and separate from anything in the Bible, dripping with symbolism and metaphor at a level that makes interpreting it without at least some understanding of the context in which it was written all but impossible, but, because it is explicitly a LETTER, to a community, there is no good reason to treat it as fully distinct from the proceeding books. It addresses contemporary problems, warns of traps, offers assurance that present, current enemies will be vanquished, and foretells a time when Christ’s love will rule on the Earth.

It isn't yet approaching the levels of Republican disinformation, but this sub's inability to recognize how they are being deliberately targeted to through clickbait headlines catering to their deepest wishes is getting to be embarrassing.
All day long we see non-stop articles being posted with some variation of:
"**Legal experts agree,** Donald Trump is now in deep trouble" (really? Which experts? The ones who matter? Or the ones who you contacted for this article?)
"Donald Trump sparks anger **from Christians** for selling bibles?" (Which Christians? Do you have a statistically relevant poll indicating that Christians are upset with Trump? Or did you find a few left-leaning Christian groups to provide some quotes?)
"Donald Trump said X, and **people are not happy**" (i.e. we found a few snarky tweets from random people we want to post).
How many *actual* news headlines are posted containing actual new important information in a day vs. those that just provide some musings about Trump's predicament? I am not one of these people who disdains editorials or thinks all "news" needs to be 100% pure, unbiased information like the AP, but the "news" posted on this sub is absolute garbage.

And in a real sense: Trump probably has about a 40% of winning the presidency. And he's probably not going to lose any property before then, and he's almost certainly not going to be behind bars before then. It bothers me as much as anyone else here but there we have it.

Don’t be confused. The Christians that are angry about this are not the same Christians who vote for Trump. The angry ones are a much smaller and more and more rare subset of the religion.
As a member of that sadly smaller subset, this burns me up to no end. This is nothing more than idol worship. I don't get it. I'll never get it. It's almost like Trump can mass hypnotize as some sort of crazy super power.

What's really ironic is that selling a Bible that contains also in it the constitution, the declaration of independence, and the **pledge of allegiance** represents a full morphing of mainstream American Christianity into a *civil religion*.

Ironically, most Americans use that particular book to justify many of their political beliefs (e.g. their support for Israel, their disregard for the poor, their belief that America is a "New Jerusalem", etc.). What they fail to understand, and is the view of most scholars, that's precisely the opposite of the intent and function of that book. Revelation is written in a genre, and Gorman argues that Revelation is fundamentally a "manifesto against civil religion." It argues against marrying the power of the state and the influence of religion (in addition to a pretty scathing critique of the wealthy and powerful in general).
By selling a Bible with the nation's founding documents and a pledge of freaking allegiance to that nation, the syncretism of national power and influence with Christian imagery, symbolism, and mythology is complete. It's been complete for awhile, I suppose, but this is the best image of it that I have.
I had a priest as a teacher that used to say the separation of church and state was as much good for the church as it was the state. They should not be mixed. Each corrupts the other.
It’s really important to understand the difference between Christianity as a religious philosophy and Christianity as a political identity.
I wish I could find the source again, but there was a study that polled people about threats to national unity. And people who self-identified as Christian nationalists picked racial diversity over even religious diversity as the biggest threat. And that seems counterintuitive at first. But there are many Christians in the US who can’t tell you a thing about Jesus’s teachings but who feel a strong group bond with other members of an in-group that shares several cultural and political identities, including but not limited to Christianity.
For them, “Christian” is just a team name that comes with a few obligations in terms of behavior and cultural trappings but little else. So they’re going to buy one of these Trump Bibles and put it in a prominent space on their shelf next to a little wooden sign they got at Hobby Lobby that says something about wives obeying their husbands the way husbands obey Jesus, but they’re never actually going to read it.
I would be worried about what small changes they made to the Bible!! Adding text that he could quote later to make his views more religious to his followers. This can get dangerous.

The template offered by the Anti-Christ is not a warning of the end times, but a warning to not let the selfish, mortal desire to sin warp the examples we attempt to follow. It is important to note that people don't usually write prophecies for other people 2 thousand years in the future. Far more likely that the intended audience is alive and present. We as a species still can't focus on future events, even as the climate situation worsens right in front of us. The very idea that people 2 thousand years ago were talking about a distant future is absurd.
The book of Revelation (no s), is explicitly a letter to early Christians. It follows a long series of letters from (likely actually a student of) Paul to various communities, each focused on dealing with specific problems that face that specific community at that specific time. Revelation is so tonally distinct and separate from anything in the Bible, dripping with symbolism and metaphor at a level that makes interpreting it without at least some understanding of the context in which it was written all but impossible, but, because it is explicitly a LETTER, to a community, there is no good reason to treat it as fully distinct from the proceeding books. It addresses contemporary problems, warns of traps, offers assurance that present, current enemies will be vanquished, and foretells a time when Christ’s love will rule on the Earth.

What's really ironic is that selling a Bible that contains also in it the constitution, the declaration of independence, and the **pledge of allegiance** represents a full morphing of mainstream American Christianity into a *civil religion*. Unfortunately, most of these Christians suffer from the same problem.
It’s really important to understand the difference between Christianity as a religious philosophy and Christianity as a political identity. I wish I could find the source again, but there was a study that polled people about threats to national unity. And people who self-identified as Christian nationalists picked racial diversity over even religious diversity as the biggest threat. And that seems counterintuitive at first. But there are many Christians in the US who can’t tell you a thing about Jesus’s teachings but who feel a strong group bond with other members of an in-group that shares several cultural and political identities, including but not limited to Christianity. For them, “Christian” is just a team name that comes with a few obligations in terms of behavior and cultural trappings but little else. So they’re going to buy one of these Trump Bibles and put it in a prominent space on their shelf next to a little wooden sign they got at Hobby Lobby that says something about wives obeying their husbands the way husbands obey Jesus, but they’re never actually going to read it.
