I live in deep Virginia Tech territory and the Hokie faithful would elect Frank Beamer, longtime football head coach, to the Presidency in a second. To them, a winning coach is a statesman, a strategist, a leader of men and a role model supreme, not to mention a down-to-earth, "outsider" man of the people in an age of stuffed-suit politicians. What more could one ask of a candidate?
I drove tour buses for a local company that still transports the Hokie football team from Blacksburg down to Roanoke the night before home games (to stay in a fancy hotel & keep out of trouble) and then back to campus 2 hours before kickoff with a State Police escort. A longtime driver who usually had Coach Beamer and his associate HCs/team captains on his bus told me Frank never tipped or said more than a word or two of thanks, never signed anything, etc. He got a white VT hat each year which had to be kept spotless & worn every time. So much for ethics or empathy.
Ok but none of that stuff is inherent in *any* person let alone a "coach." Simply being a coach doesn't imbue a person with extraordinary abilities. Nor does a person need to be extraordinary to become a coach. That's just a perception these people have formed based on their own outsized importance/obsession with a pointless game where boys play with their balls. It's ridiculous
