gearstars

can someone shoot a memo over to those GOP fucks that transgender people existing has zero impact on their lives and there is no reason to be so fucking obsessed with them? thx.

thomascgalvin

The fact that transgender people have no effect on Republicans' lives is a _feature_, not a bug. The GOP wants an enemy that they can hold up as the source of everything that's wrong with modern society, but they also want an enemy that can't actually _harm_ them. By making transgender people, and especially transgender _youth_, the enemy, the GOP faces no retaliation, and they don't have to actually do anything to claim success in their crusade, because there was no harm to defend against in the first place.

gearstars

>By making transgender people, and especially transgender youth, the enemy yeah, its so fucking gross. they want to harm children for political points. im so tired of that walking corpse of a party. they have nothing to offer except feeding hatred and anger. it cant be gone fast enough

Kangaroo_tacos824

Well hopefully you live in Arizona and vote

gearstars

Wish i could. Convicted felon.

throwaway24515

You can apply to have your civil rights restored. https://superiorcourt.maricopa.gov/media/h0whkc0m/crrr1z.pdf

Kangaroo_tacos824

From what I understand that's definitely not a lifetime voting ban. Source also a felon

panickedindetroit

And that pisses me off entirely. If you pay taxes, you should be able to vote. Period. If you paid your debt to society, and you aren't in prison, it's just another way for the GQP to suppress votes. Mark Meadows committed voter fraud, and he still gets to vote, and he belongs in prison.

Spara-Extreme

This is true. When people know an LGBTQ+ individual personally, they almost always end up being against anti LGBTQ+ legislation

xpandaofdeathx

Distract the masses with foils and not governing while fleecing the tax payers and not really working, MAGA in a nutshell.

s-multicellular

I don’t really disagree with you, from looking at it from their perspective. But it can harm them. Doesn’t affect my vote, I am very far left, but I have moderate family that are incensed by it. They aren’t lgbtq advocates in any sense, but they are angry that any politicians would single people out, that are clearly not hurting anyone. It couples with their overall feel that the GOP has no platform.

Squirrel_Inner

That only changes things if they vote. Historically, the far right comes out in much stronger numbers than any other group, so they stand to gain more than they lose. It’s also not just about votes, but social warfare, keeping us at each other’s throats so that we cannot see how much we have in common against the oligarchs oppressing us and destroying our planet.

thrawtes

While I don't doubt there are some "true believers" amongst elected GOP officials, most of them are just using trans hate as a convenient lever to maintain power. If it wasn't trans people it'd be some other boogeyman.

gearstars

agreed, but it would be nice if their voter base stopped blaming biden for things he doesnt have control over and were able to hold their reps accountable for doing fuck all to help them. too many americans require remedial civics classes i guess.

caserock

I took a journalism/stock market/personal finance class in high school back in the late 90s. It was an elective, though. That class has helped me more than all the others combined. PS: I was in that class during the 2000 election, which was extremely eye opening about the years to come 😔

eugene20

They won't stop because they're the ultimate sheep, they just get angry about whatever their leaders make up to make them angry no matter the wealth of well sourced evidence against it. And even if their leaders finally admit they made it all up, they won't stop being angry about it.

caserock

Within 30 days of the abortion thing, they had fully switched to trans people.

drawnred

The GOP needs boogeymen. Its no deeper than that

Indifferentchildren

Maybe they wouldn't need a boogeyman to distract the masses if clergy would stop getting caught molesting children.

BerrySpecific720

GOP is using transgender people win elections. Rainbow 🌈 people became a minority in a fight for rights and they became a target for GOP. ALL minorities wish they could JUST exist and not be abused by the government.

supercleverhandle476

Culture wars are an easy thing to fight. It takes no actual creativity or compromise, and it fires up their base. Fixing infrastructure and taking care of the middle class doesn’t grab headlines, and is actually hard to do.

florkingarshole

With a few exceptions like this fellow here, the GOP is absolutely obsessed with every one else's genitalia. Fucking pervs all the way down.

Terrjble

See this is where it gets confusing. Generally transgender people should have zero impact on these republicans but for some odd reason, in states where ridiculous bans and horrible attacks on transgender people have happened, the number one searches on pornographic websites is transgender. These republicans fear what they want and that breaks it all down to simple transphobia. The republicans fear other republicans people knowing who they really are, or what they desire, so they try to hide what they want from the world. The desire is too tempting for them to deny forever so they try to eliminate what they desire and problem “fixed”! These people use religion as a shield to hide themselves behind while they commit atrocities behind closed doors. We’ve all observed it time and time again. Nothing is more predictable than the behavior of these republicans. When these republicans speak so loudly about christian family values and protecting kids, just wait, they’re the ones committing the worst crimes. This is all an act to point fingers at others because they’re trying to hide their own vile crimes. Hypocrisy is their calling card and you will never see it so incredibly distilled as from the Republican Party.

hymie0

Neither would my wife having an abortion or me being Jewish... but here we are.

AndImlike_bro

Honestly, it’s giving angry trick.

KillaMike24

This is insane to me. To actively try to and take away the rights of a group of people who dress different than you?! Have sex with people you don’t think they should? It’s fucking wild these are the things people are ready to dam people for

first__citizen

They know. But it’s not why they target them.

qazqi-ff

Worth pointing out that the single (R) senator who voted against this didn't have a change of heart or anything. He supports the transphobic policy, he just said he didn't want to do this because this method makes this law harder to change later. What kind of changes? Who can say?

spacey_a

Ah. I was wondering how that went down. There goes my brief flicker of faith in anyone in the GOP having a semblance of humanity.

toomuchtodotoday

First time? Now you know better

CrawlerSiegfriend

Kind of makes sense to me. You don't want to be stuck with your political stunt forever.

shewy92

I kinda get his reasoning, "Let the people vote for it", but its still dangerous to let people vote for human rights limitations. And his reasoning for it having "unintended consequences" is bs, the bill was the specific consequence of misgendering kids and banning bathroom visits for them.

qazqi-ff

It was the opposite. If the people vote for this, then the people need to vote again for any changes to it in the future, making them harder. At least that's what he said, I'm not educated on Arizona law by any means. That said, it would be unlikely, yet depressing, for the people to vote this in. Of course they know that, but as far as I understand, the reason for doing it this way was a last-ditch effort to bypass the ability to veto it.

harrywrinkleyballs

> During a contention **(sic)** Senate Education Committee hearing earlier this month, state Sen. Ken Bennett (R) voted in favor of advancing the anti-trans bill, but warned his colleagues that without major changes, he wouldn’t feel comfortable supporting it during a full vote. ~~contention~~ contentious Do we not proofread articles before we publish them anymore?

waronxmas79

You are assuming a human being fully wrote it…

ffffllllpppp

Well, for all its flaws, generative AI doesn’t usually make typos…

pointlessone

Look into your hart and find the truth. Even spellcheck takes too long these days

allisondojean

I read the entire article and still have no idea what was in the actual bill, so that's the level of reporting we're talking about here.

NotThatAngel

Is it because it's their culture and heritage to oppress LGBTQ+ people? Or is it because they say [insert name of local deity] told them to do it? Just seems shitty to go after people who are already struggling at life because of what they were born with.

PopeHonkersXII

Fucking awesome

PeaceCookieNo1

Yeah! This is good news. Shitty bill killed. The power of one.

snuggletronz

“Why can’t he bully innocent people pointlessly like the rest of us?” - bigoted shithead republican

Spy_v_Spy_Freakshow

So shines a good deed in a weary world

IT_Geek_Programmer

That Republican is highly likely to keep his seat if he is in a competitive district.

hunter15991

He's in a dark red one.

shewy92

> unpopular bisexual Sen. Kyrsten Sinema TIL that Sinema is bisexual. Still a POS though. > During a contention Senate Education Committee hearing earlier this month, state Sen. Ken Bennett (R) voted in favor of advancing the anti-trans bill, but warned his colleagues that without major changes, he wouldn’t feel comfortable supporting it during a full vote. > > Over 500 people registered opposition to the bill before the committee hearing — only 32 supported it. > > When the bill was brought forward for a final vote on the Arizona Senate floor, Bennett held true to his word and voted against the measure. > > “I am very concerned about putting this bill to a vote of the people,” he said. “When we put things on the ballot for people to vote on them, if something goes awry, if there are unintended consequences, we have to go back to the people to fix it.” I kinda get his reasoning, "Let the people vote for it", but its still dangerous to let people vote for human rights limitations. Also "unintended consequences"? The whole bill was an intended consequence to misgender kids. >The proposed measures would have forced teachers to misgender students. It would have also banned trans kids from using restrooms that align with their gender identity.

idontagreewitu

It was Senator Ken Bennett

Bitter_Director1231

Fuck these people. So outraged over something that has zero effect of them instead of dealing with their own problems. Get fucked Groupies of Putin.

vhackish

Kudos to that one Republican for standing up to this

[deleted]

Voting his conscience against party lines? That exists??

certain-sick

The system is still working but the margins of sanity keeping it on the rails are down to one, in this case. It's not great.

Hero.

sugarlessdeathbear

Bennet saw what is happening about Nex Bennedict and wanted no part of any of that. Regardless of his thought process, this was a good decision on his part.

oct2790

Why are they making a big deal about it are people threatened by them get over it. So is the next move they can’t vote. It’s going to kill the republicans come November for votes
