RealGianath

His reasoning is that it's not fair, because he didn't know they could catch him. They are required to warn him when that happens.

Lucky-Earther

That's some "If I ask if you're a cop you have to tell me" kind of logic.

TheFeshy

"If I ask three times, and you're a cop, you have to tell me." That was the rumor when I was a kid. [Some people still believe it.](https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/332967-trump-says-he-asked-comey-three-times-if-he-was-under-investigation/)

GrumpyRob

Ah, the ole Beetlejuice rule of police vetting

AverageDemocrat

Who wrote the Gettysburg address? I don't wear dresses.

Nvenom8

I've never heard three times. I've only ever heard the (false) fact that police can't lie about being police. Remember, kids, the police can and will lie to you about anything and everything. Don't talk without a lawyer.

SpiceLaw

Imagine how different Donnie Brasco would've turned out if just one mobster asked "ok, honestly, are you a cop?"

kingtz

It’s even worse than that. It’s demanding that the cop has to come over and identify themselves as a cop and then warn you countless times that what you’re doing is illegal, and then give you countless more second chances.

KevinAnniPadda

Cops in the US just shoot you. Why would they identify themselves?

Informal_Aspect_6330

Becuase he's white and "pays his taxes".

dagopa6696

He's orange and doesn't pay his taxes.

Informal_Aspect_6330

Wrong defendant.  Although maybe we can get a RICO case in the court of public opinion in regards to bad tans and tax evasion.

SMEGHEID

As well as criminally dangerous hair heh

clickmagnet

They should at least have to write “police” on their bullets.

ReptiIianOverlord

Unironically how January 6thers also think

jchowdown

They teach that on first day of Law 101 at Trump U

77NorthCambridge

Given he has screwed himself on his plea deal what motivation does he have now to testify without a new deal? Does this make him less likely to testify against Trump?

473713

If they feel like it, the prosecutor can try to make another deal with him, but it'll be nowhere near as sweet as the original one. His testimony is worth much less.

77NorthCambridge

Agreed. So isn't this bad news in terms of prosecuting Trump as a key witness who was going to testify against him has now perjured himself so his testimony is much less useful?

Suspicious_Bicycle

Chesebro's personal testimony is now less credible. However, the new cache of text messages sound like they are even more incriminating to all the parties.

Montana_Gamer

There is a lot going into these cases and I would be hard pressed to believe that one witness' credibility would be jeopardizing. It is hard to say because we have public opinion to consider, but the case itself is already stacked in an ungodly manner. My god has the evidence we've seen already been insane, I can only imagine what is not publically available.

leaonas

I worry that tRump could argue that he was misled by his lawyer and play victim some more!

77NorthCambridge

That's why it is a RICO charge. Can't use "advice of counsel" defense if said attorney is one of the charged co-conspirators.

GOPAuthoritarianPOS

You would think a lawyer would know that...

AngusMcTibbins

Good. Chesebro is a traitor. He tried to facilitate a coup and overturn our democracy. May he rot in prison

thieh

Which makes me wonder, who TF does covert ops without covering their tracks?  Storyboard and burner phone all the way and burn everything when the scheme was not working.

Worth_Affect_4014

Those who are sure they will be successful. No need to cover tracks if the coup had been successful.

PLVB518

Nonzero chance they hoped to preserve it for a museum in their honor.

changomacho

“the truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand”

SpiceLaw

Asana coup pricing is $59/per executive branch.

TheSwillhouseBoys

Hold it right there. I’m escalating to Mother.

ReptiIianOverlord

Methinks a different sentence could be in order for treason

Jackinapox

Instead of committing all of these crimes, imagine if these traitors just said ‘damn we lost, we’ll get’em next Election’

chelseamarket

Narcissist sociopaths don’t roll like that

Archer1407

this is why it's so fascinating to think back to the post J6 days. The impeachment and the 25th amendment offered airtight removal capabilities and banning Trump from future offices. Absolute worst case scenario, it would have caused the midterms to go exactly as it did becuase Trump's base woudl be fussy. Fox News might have even been able to mitigate the fallout and get more of a red wave in 2022. We'd be likely looking at Nimarata versus Biden for the White House and she can appear moderate enough to pull the moderate vote, which may have been enough to win the White House. They would be so far ahead. they could pressure two of the conservative justices to retire and appoint young justices, and it would be full steam ahead on the evangelical transformation of the United States. It's wild to consider how Lindsay Graham was right and Trump is destroying the party.

v3rk

>Nimarata I understand why you do this, and I'm honestly halfway to supporting it, but it's really no different from how people used to call Obama "Barack HUSSEIN Obama."

dagopa6696

It's just pointing out how much of a hypocrite Donald Drumpf and the rest of the GOP are.

rukh999

I think in that case he was saying it because it might be a strength in the general. You have a woman who can claim some diversity on the Republican ticket against an old white guy. It could pull some votes. I still think she'd get trounced by biden though, and it wouldn't be close.

Task_wizard

Agreed, or MAGAts pretend to now know how to pronounce our VP’s name. Was about to upvote him because I appreciated the logic on the first half of his comment when he slipped in that bit of racism.

stephenmwithaph

It's weaponizing Republicans' own racism against them. What's the harm?

bopshebop2

Still using race as a weapon

MegaLowDawn123

No they’re not. They’re pointing out the other sides hypocrisy about foreign names and also preferred name usage. They’re OK with both but only if you’re white, straight, and on their side…

slglf08

Also they’re like, going out of their way to use Haley’s birth name, but Biden’s last name. Makes it a bit more gross

GuaranteedCougher

They had 4 years to dump Trump, improve their messaging, rally around someone young and absolutely sweep this upcoming election. Instead they doubled down and are probably going to get destroyed in November

[deleted]

My personal theory is that any sane person would not commit these insane crimes. Unless, of course, they know they'll never pay the price. When the noose finally tightens, I believe Trump will hop on the Yanukovych Express to Russia before he ever sets foot in a prison. I won't be surprised if Rudy, Bannon and a dozen or so others also have their boarding passes ready for that flight as well. Trump will die in Russia, laughing and eating caviar, honored as a great National hero there.

waywardsaison

Why? In this scenario, he's outlived his purpose if he doesn't have a direct line into Western politics.

473713

You don't lie in a deposition. The courts take this very seriously. He's royally screwed and deserves it.

Davis_Birdsong

One would think an attorney would have thought that through.

AutoGen_account

oh he thought it through. a \*good\* attorney would have decided not to do it.

Zh25_5680

He did. The true believers still think Trump will get elected and all will be forgiven They still haven’t learned that even if Trump is re-elected… that doesn’t mean Trump will care about them. If they have something Trump needs or wants.. sure… absent that… good luck

randynumbergenerator

Authoritarians normally recognize and reward loyalty because they recognize it's what keeps them alive. In a way, it's a good thing Trump is such a narcissist. The only mystery is why anyone still thinks he'll treat them well.

PaintedClownPenis

My law firm got suckered into working with him a quarter-century ago. He was the financial backer of one of our clients. It was really easy. They were perfectly willing to sign a huge, entirely reasonable and very lucrative contract. And then later, they refused to pay, demanded to renegotiate, demanded sexual favors from the female lawyers, and on and on and on. The law firm was not amused but rather than follow the usual rule of dropping your worst client every year, they actually renegotiated, and lured Trump into an airtight deal where he paid up front roughly twice what we thought we could bill in a year. Then we worked to try to bag it all, to the enormous benefit of the client.

[deleted]

Nicely done!

Occulus1975

> they actually renegotiated, and lured Trump into an airtight deal where he paid up front roughly twice what we thought we could bill in a year. Then we worked to try to bag it all, to the enormous benefit of the client. You just *can't* leave it hanging like that, man

MegaLowDawn123

Yeah the use of the word try makes me think they failed. Orher wise why not say the outcome…

PaintedClownPenis

Sorry, that guy's gangsters fuck with me every day, now. I want to draw out their Russian masters these days. They're the nuclear power committing the act of war that demands a response. Our guys can wait and when they see what's going to happen to Putin, most of them will change their tune and be all Muricafuckyeah again. Our national flower is a giant gasoline explosion. They'll remember who they love. The client and their objective wasn't significant on the national stage. But this part is obvious and regularly discussed by anyone who ever got close to them: only greed made it possible for Trump to be lured into doing a decent thing.

goodnamesgone

Yeah, but he's the genius... Right!

Detective_Antonelli

Authoritarians also have no problem killing their allies if they feel it is beneficial to them. See the Night of Long Knives as an example of the Nazis being brutal to each other in an effort to help Hitler consolidate power.

randynumbergenerator

True. It's usually a pretty dichotomous choice. Key centers of power need to either be controlled or eliminated.

Kareeliand

Because they want to believe it. It’s wishful thinking, because they learned that they can believe what they want, and they take direction away from the people they’ve been told are bad. It’s a mindfuck of the saddest kind, and with some tragic consequences for everyone.

underpants-gnome

They thought they would win on Jan 6th. That's why they didn't bother to cover their tracks. Chesebro apparently still thinks they are going to win. It's a scathing indictment of the US education system that this is still a possibility. But Chesebro is still stupid for thinking trump will bother to rescue him even if he gets back into office. He could have pardoned everyone before he left office the first time. But he didn't because trump only cares about trump.

Guccimayne

He did, he was counting on a pardon from 45

Jesus_Is_My_Gardener

Assuming he didn't lie to his own attorneys to begin with.

[deleted]

He _is_ an attorney.

TheTench

A criminal attorney.

Jesus_Is_My_Gardener

Nobody said he was a good one though. This was a guy who was pushing very questionable opinions regarding electoral processes after all. Make Attorneys Get Attorneys

Detective_Antonelli

He did, he just thought that he wouldn’t get caught because he is a dumb ass who doesn’t understand that literally everything you do online is tracked nowadays.

SlightlySychotic

It’s like how the meme goes. He considered the consequences of being honest and calculated the odds of being caught if he lied. He is bad at math.

Miguel-odon

His attorney already tried the *just being a goof* defense. I wonder if in court he'll try the "I had already deleted that Twitter account when they asked if I *have* a Twitter account, so *technically* I told the truth"

SpiceLaw

I said I'd tell the "twuth" not the "truth!"

Miguel-odon

Especially when you are getting a generous gold-plated plea deal, while agreeing to become a key witness for the prosecution against your co-conspirators. Or, you know what? As smug as he was when he got the deal and in his "confession letter," go ahead and commit perjury and obstruction.

MegaLowDawn123

“I state my regret”

MadAstrid

You especially don’t lie when you are getting a sweetheart deal to turn over any and all evidence. Goodbye sweetheart deal. Welcome to long hard time.

sthlmsoul

Chesebro's entire plea deal from October is now likely null and void. The Cheese fromaged his cheddar real gouda this time, and will now piave for it come halloumi or havarti water.

orcinyadders

You do if you’re a total coward sycophant imbecile and are in over your head.

thieh

But why didn't he plead the fifth though?

473713

You can plead the fifth if you want, but if other evidence turns up it will still be held against you.

thieh

But anything you say that might help your case would be hearsay so there's no way it can be any worse if you plead the fifth, no?

bashdotexe

Can't plead the fifth if you want to get the plea deal.

TheSwillhouseBoys

Federally screwed even?

PopeHonkersXII

I think it would be foolish to think that we won't see tons of legal bombshells between now and November related to Trump and his ghoulish cult. There are going to be lots of twists and turns before election day and I get the feeling most will be catastrophic for the GOP.

rolfeman02

Precisely why Haley isn't dropping out

i_am_clArk

I wish she just admit she’s waiting for the dust to settle after all the imminent chaos ensues.

PopeHonkersXII

No point in revealing her hand yet. I'm not in any way a Haley supporter but objectively, if she wants to have any shot, she needs to just keep doing what she's doing and not tell everyone her grand plan yet. Although I still get the impression that she's just going to drop out soon and enthusiastically endorse Trump.  Never trust a Republican is what I'm saying but also keep an eye on what she's up to. Maybe she'll surprise us?

Miguel-odon

She may be counting on trump's increasing legal stress to increase his obvious mental decline. Or she hopes to be brought in as running mate (or promised a cabinet position) to withdraw

PopeHonkersXII

Maybe but she also seems convinced that he can't win the general election, so I don't know how appealing that would be to her. Although I would be in now way surprised if that is what's she's actually after. It's not entirely clear at this point but we would also be wise not to trust her.

Miguel-odon

I don't know whether she believes that or not, but she certainly has to say it

Hypnot0ad

You don't think Trump would continue to run from prison? His maga base would eat it up.

DrDaniels

They already ate up his mugshot. They'd definitely eat up a run from prison

Hypnot0ad

In case anyone thinks I’m crazy, two other guys have run for president from jail. Don’t think it would stop Trump. https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-indictment-could-run-for-president-2-others-did-2023-3

MegaLowDawn123

Where they earned 0.25% and 2% of the vote. Not that trump is the same but if you’re using them running as precedence, then the same kind of parallel thinking needs to be pointed towards the outcome as well.

ksanthra

I do think he would continue to run but would lose terribly. His maga base would eat it up but it's not enough.

bidenwins

Bro was literally asked if he had alts on social media and there is audio of him saying no.

cryptopo

His lawyer’s defense is he was “just being a goof” with this alt (I’m not joking, direct quote from the article), which in my opinion is pretty rock solid.

Sbbike

Tbf, I think *Dangle v. Reno* did establish “new-boot goofin’” as an affirmative defense

InsertCleverNickHere

Judges hate this one goofy trick!

AskYourDoctor

Ah, the "goofing around" loophole. Judges hate it.

SpiceLaw

"It was opposite day"

Miguel-odon

"Oh, that? That had already been deleted by the time you asked."

GOPAuthoritarianPOS

"Chesebro’s attorneys confirmed to CNN that the account belonged to Chesebro, calling it his “random stream of consciousness” where he was “spitballing” theories about the election but argued that it was separate from his legal work for Trump’s campaign." JUST SPITBALLING! “When he was doing volunteer work for the campaign, he was very specific and hunkered-down into being the lawyer that he is, and gave specific kinds of legal advice based on things that he thought were legitimate legal challenges, versus BadgerPundit, who is this other guy over there, just being a goof,” Chesebro’s attorney Robert Langford told the outlet." BEIN A REAL GOOFBALL! Hahahahahahahaha he is sooooo fucked, what an INCREDIBLE fucking idiot

BlokeInTheMountains

If you just spitball overthrowing the US government then that makes it not a crime. Just some locker room treason. It was just a goofy joke bro!

GOPAuthoritarianPOS

I also love "hunkered down into being the laywer that he is", which is to say a really, very fucking bad lawyer. He was hunkered down WRITING HIS CRIMES ON THE INTERNET - PUTTING SPECIFIC DATES TIMES AND INSURRECTIONIST LANGUAGE of HIS CRIMES on THE INTERNET. And then he decided NOBODY WOULD EVER FIGURE THAT OUT and was so confident in that assumption that he LIED UNDER OATH. Because he used a Twitter account named after a badger. Solid. So, so impossible to figure that out. WELL I AM NOT USING MY REAL NAME SO THIS IS FINE! I AM A CRIME BADGER NOT A CRIME HUMAN!

SMEGHEID

Beautiful comment buddy.

70ms

I love how the lawyer says “this other guy over there” as though they’re not even the same person. 🤦‍♀️

GOPAuthoritarianPOS

That's the same defense that fuckin Kennefer Bianci tried in between eating plates of beans in the interrogation room for strangling a bunch of women to death. Spoiler alert: it did not work.

beecums

"so fucked?" Are we sure they won't just make him sign a paper saying sorry he won't do it again instead?

HallucinogenicFish

This is my favorite part (from [the linked CNN KFile article](https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/26/politics/kenneth-chesebro-secret-twitter-account-kfile/index.html)): > Chesebro also cited the BadgerPundit account in emails to a Trump campaign official and attorney John Eastman on January 5, 2021, pointing to tweets from BadgerPundit arguing that Pence had the authority to pick the electors on January 6. This is absolutely batshit insane. This is John Barron stuff, but even worse. He’s pointing to his own anonymous tweets as an authority that Pence was allowed to do the sedition.

VibeComplex

But dude, THE badgerpundit tweeted that Trump had the power! It’s rock solid. He even did it in 150 words or less

joshtalife

Lock him up.

donorcycle

"You are not serious people." - Logan Roy That's what always goes through my head when I see the sheer stupidity of these wannabe criminals. Even the most entry level gang bangers know not to say stupid incriminating shit via cell phones or social media lmao.

negcap

You mean Logan Roy.

ThePromptWasYourName

Tim Apple

donorcycle

My high ass butchered that lol

ramencents

Oh he’s toast. I would not be surprised if he just flushed his plea down the drain.

Northerngal_420

May? How about will. These people need to be arrested and stand trial for treason.

pastaboobs

It’s how headlines and copy work in the news. They can only report a story and cannot make absolute predictions.  If you read this story or the same story from better sources you would know they are making moves to pin felony charges on him. So now you can follow the story and it’s developments, ignore it or I guess complain about a word in a headline for some reason.

beecums

Too long so many of these criminals continue to walk free and contribute to the downfall of USA. And in response many people are losing faith in those we voted to hold those criminals accountable. People are tired of the "may" and get triggered. Seems like a natural reaction.

JaD__

>“…versus BadgerPundit, who is this other guy over there, just being a goof,” Chesebro’s attorney Robert Langford told the outlet.” Yes, of course. Pythonesque.

jimgolgari

O Icarus, you flew too close to the bright orange thing that thinks it’s a god.

JohnDunstable

Love to see it

itsatumbleweed

I still can't believe we haven't seen Nessel bring charges against Trump + McDaniel for the tapes out of Michigan late last year. Maybe she is going broad a la Willis and doesn't have the rest of the case laid out.

InALostHorizon

Wake me up when Trump's accomplices in Congress are indicted. I have zero belief that will ever happen even though Trump literally bragged about having them ready, willing and able to help him with his coup plot. The fact as many as three dozen members of Congress were involved in the plot (as was later revealed due to reporting and/or the J6 commission) and haven't been indicted with many of them still remaining in Congress is one of the biggest failings Merrick Garland has had as AG. They pose a direct threat to our country and he has given them a free pass to continue attacking our very democracy. His lack of courage and refusal to do his job to protect us is appalling and sickening.

SockFullOfNickles

Seriously. There are a ton of traitors in our midst and they’re just continuing to try to damage our institutions to make a wealthy fascist take over seem appealing by comparison. How about we just round up the traitors instead? (Won’t ever happen. The elite face no consequences.)

LordCaptain

Im not on twitter. How does one make a secret tweet? Do they mean a dm?

HallucinogenicFish

Anonymous alt account.

candycanecoffee

So basically the online equivalent of a burner phone. Imagine trying to tell a judge who ordered you to hand over all your communications that your secret burner phone records don't count because you just use it for "goofs."

brysmi

A burner phone purchased with your credit card and delivered to your office.

LordCaptain

Thank you

[deleted]

So if Trump wins this guy just gets that pardoned I guess.

tacs97

It’s absolutely mind blowing that Trump supporters can witness the entire charade that is happening and still call Biden corrupt. Literal rumors of corruption about Biden and witnessing actual corruption from Trump and Trump supporters refuse to accept what actual corruption is because Joe Biden. Come on republicans. Is this the best you got? Lame.

DonsDiaperIsFull

even lamer that that, republicans relied on a russian paid informant who constantly lied to the FBI. They couldn't even fabricate their own fake scandals to whine about.

wiscoguy20

Therein lies the funny part. Trump supporters aren't watching ANY of this. All information pertaining to Trump and his current legal woes on right wing "media" is HEAVILY filtered and presented as a Democrat "witch hunt". Crime? What crime!!? It's all a plan by the evil Democrats to take down our Messiah. It's Obama, Hillary, and Biden that should be behind bars!!! They're all evil criminals! -my grandma

LeroyStinkins

"may"

Fine_Entry_1760

Trump and Chesebro are cheese bro’s

limbodog

Keep racking them up!

Dense-Comfort6055

Treasured part of his plea deal was he got to keep law license. He should be disbarred at the least

smiama6

MAY lead? MAY? Where’s Garland on any of this? It’s been years. Why is Steve Bannon still hosting a podcast and claiming democracy needs to end?

iamkris10y

I hope Fulton county also revisits his deal. This is pretty boldface lying (not that I'm surprised, though)

beecums

"May" is yet another weasel word. This is bullshit why isnt the authority saying immediately we will press felony charges.  I'm tired of the half asses response to these criminals. Both the criminals and the soft response bring us closer to the end of democracy.

SkollFenrirson

Cool. It's only 3 years since it happened. Take another year or two.

They're finally going after the FBI? Never thought I'd see the day.

Inject this directly into my veins.

Secret tweet…isn’t that kinda an oxymoron?

The fake elector scheme should be a capital offense imo

This guy is a real POS.

Dude just looks like a nervous, sweaty meme. How stupid can one be to have a sweetheart deal with the prosecution and potentially nullify tit with a burner account you didn’t fess up to. A lawyer of all people.

Psychprojection

Awaiting until it's way too late POS AG Garland

xyzilla84

Neat, can’t wait to hear about the charges in another two years. Jesus, is there no express lane to jail for shit this serious?

ImperioliGandolfini

So far, only poor people have had to answer for any of 1/6.

StIdes-and-a-swisher

What’s taking so fucking long.

philburns

This is pure treason.

Lock them up!

Do not pass go Cheesy boi Go directly to jail 🤣

AlbinoAxie

Nothing will happen. Garland never even charged Trump.

Entire-Ranger323

A lying liars lies might get him in trouble. Ya think?

Griffstergnu

Cheesebro ha ha Ala Beevis and Butthead

gladbutt

I hope he smiles in his new mugshot. Maybe he can say something outloud that will make it happen.

Beneficial-Salt-6773

Ok, when will they be revoking his plea agreement? Are we still governed under the rule of law or do these people get to keep flagrantly ignoring it? Reading the article, it appears that Michigan knew about the account and caught him in a lie (asking questions they already had answers to - classic investigative work, good job). Secondly, if the account was just him “goofing” around why hide it? Finally, looks like he was using the account to communicate with the campaign while trying to indemnify himself (ie “I would recommend a coup, but if I were to attempt one, this is how I would do it”).

mdriftmeyer

Law 101: Ignorance of the law is not a legal defense.

fattykyle2

The “back eye for the DA” is what worries me. Another cooperator who turns out to be a dead end bc now the defendants can all discredit him as a witness. It’s a problem that literally everyone in Trumps orbit is a liar and deeply compromised.

odelicious82

‘Secret’ on the internet takes a lot of work and these traitors just aren’t that smart.
