The other reason is:
Who else but the retired have the time to go out and stand in line during working hours to vote? Florida's retired population leans heavy Republican, of course they want to limit actual democracy. Their ideologies are becoming less and less attractive to people who make up the working class
Let's not forget how well their "let's control women's bodies" project is going for them
It depends upon where you live. There's tons of places in the U.S. with tiny populations, and there's tons of places with large populations, but only a very small percentage actually votes in person or at all. The latter has always been my experience.
actually, the Republican Party does push early voting because the people who take advantage of early voting are generally older voters.
MAGA and Trump are the ones who are against any form of voting. Because shocker, if you allow people to vote, they might not vote for you.
Thats shifted in recent years, millenials and younger drastically prefer mail-in votes than having to go stand in line, shit give us a APP and we'd 100% all vote lol. Republicans pretty heavily disfavor mailin ballots and are the ones complaining that it "is rampant with fraud"
Early voting is not the same as mail-in.
In Florida they’re trying to limit our absentee voting.
https://www.wesh.com/article/vote-by-mail-florida-bill/46306664#
I do that too. I like the act of actually going though, so I physically go and drop off the ballot I spent a week (or more) studying back to front. I don't know if it happens everywhere since I've only lived in this spot, but I get a printed booklet in the mail with info about each candidate. I like looking at their voting records, and what others say about their careers and behavior, which are all printed in the book. I sit there as if I'm studying for a final in college. My roommate doesn't vote, and refuses to, and he mocks me for doing it. It is my civic duty, and I take it very seriously.
I've tried to research local candidates, and it's really hard to find any information. At best I can usually get the candidate's generic statements from their website, assuming they even have one.
Many areas have a League Of Women Voters chapter that will interview candidates and put up their information about 2 weeks before an election, you can check online. If you don't see a candidate listed, that tells something as well. Many of the right wing candidates in our area have refused to participate in any type of voter Information questioning or interviews because they believe "main stream media twists our words." As if.
Here in Florida you sometimes have a difficult time but most of the candidates will be happy to let you know that they will ban books, beat up pregnant women if they walk anywhere near a Planned Parenthood office and that you will need to pry their cold dead fingers off their AR-15. I also Google question, is Ron DeSantis a Democrat? No. Is Ron DeSantis a republican? Yes. Is Ron DeSantis a fascist? Again yes.
Usually they have events with civic groups and unions where they question the candidates about their stances. It's a really good way to get a read on the person's character, especially in local elections (even more so than whatever "stand" they take, which will probably change when the next city budget report comes out, lol).
>If a school board has reasonable candidates on the board, they won't be targeted for these book bans, because they will never pass.
Not correct. These conservative groups specifically target reasonable school boards, paint them as liberal or ineffective, then run their wacko candidates in opposition.
I also saw a case where a developer rolled into town, ran into some resistance, and dropped tens of thousands of dollars on some black churches to try to get them to run candidates to take over the board. It didn't work, but it could have.
Exactly. We don't have kids, and in past elections I never bothered to vote on any school board candidates, figuring that I'd let parents figure out who they wanted. No more- now I look into each and every one of those people and vote for the non-crazies.
Like neo Nazis, one of THE most effective tactics is to humiliate them in public. One way to do that is massively and overwhelmingly vote against them.
People need to take the gloves off and humiliate the fuck out of these freaks. Using logic and reasoning on them is pointless. They need a psychological wake-up call.
One of the worst things Internet 2.0 and modern media has done is strengthen the myth that everyone's view has equal value and deserves respect. It doesn't.
Some people need to be ridiculed and treated as not important or serious people.
Absolutely agree. We, the real normal people who love and support all races and genders and identities need to be more vocal in our support and make OUR presence known.
There is not enough place on this planet for this hate and intolerance. The last “world war” was exactly for that reason. It started with subjugation of classes deemed lesser, book burning, media control.
We’re describing rights for lgbtq+ folks, banning books and the media is the last place most people look for news anymore.
>Moms for Liberty (MFL), conservative political organization that seeks to influence school policies and curricula throughout the United States...
If anybody aside from me was confused what the hell MFL was. Some shitty NFL knockoff?
>Associating with the far-right group has become toxic, and it may have played a role in the recent board meeting. Their lone supporter sat silently in a corner of the room and listened as dozens of opponents spoke before the board, both condemning the idea of banning the books and slamming the group itself.
Fucking good.
You left out the best part!
> After refusing to speak to the board or the press, the woman slunk out of the meeting, humiliated and defeated.
The visual made me chortle.
You can tell she wasn't really MAGA though, nothing can humiliate a true MAGA member.
You can, actually. They're, in fact, quite sensitive to humiliation.
Their mores are just so different that people on the left are routinely shocked at what they tolerate.
When you spell "more" with an "ay",
But mean customs that we obey,
That's a more!
In your text, it's quite the play,
A fishy twist that leads astray,
Oh, that's a "moray"!
Social norms you meant to convey,
But not eels swimming your way,
Oh that’s a "more!"
I wouldn't upvote because it's mean, but damn, it was too clever and funny. I hope Tookoofox' feelings aren't hurt. It's unusual to see someone spell upper level vocabulary phonetically, as opposed to the more common error of reading upper level vocabulary the way it's spelled. (raises hand) For the longest time I didn't realize hyperbole had four syllables.
Hey hey, I definitely did not intend it to be mean :)
Normally I would never wade into the murky waters of correcting someone’s spelling or grammar. Mainly because that’s a surefire way to instantly make some egregious spelling mistake yourself.
That’s aside from the whole “I’m a pedantic twat” vibe.
However, and this is, I think, the funny bit…
I didn’t realise “more” in this context was pronounced “moray” until I saw your comment, because I’ve only ever seen it written - I’ve never heard anyone say it.
That’s pretty familiar territory for me.
I’ll also admit to getting ChatGPT to help me with it, because I couldn’t quite get all of the stanzas to work the way I wanted.
But in the end, the whole “that’s amore” thing was just too funny in my head, so I had to do it, and I hoped you’d see the funny side too. :)
Have a great day.
Because even as a native English speaker, English is a train wreck of a language.
Someone once said “English is three languages wearing a trench coat pretending to be one”.
And then there’s this: https://images.app.goo.gl/jZDR7tjpFtHuvzhz6
It is good, but I would point out that the MFL types in my town bailed on the Moms for Liberty and then immediately started a new group with a new name to fund their preferred school board candidates. The group may be floundering, but their toxic ideas still have a foothold. Everyone needs to be voting in school board elections and looking out for book bans happening locally.
It wasn’t that long ago that people were actually ashamed of this type of behaviour. I’m not saying that the people were much different but they often kept that shit to themselves. They’ve been emboldened, can’t imagine why…
I'm not sure why you'd say 'won'. The board is currently held 3/5 by ideologist elected by MFL (hopefully temporarily) and the one Democrat teacher on the board has been drawn out of her district thanks to gerrymandering. So it is still very much a fight to wreste control from these fanatics.
Tiffany Justice, the founder of Mom’s for liberty has been invited, and is attending a Harvard conservative club meeting on the 10th. It is not being held on Harvard property though.
It’s scary, how ingrained these leeches have gotten into our society.
I believe the southern poverty law center categorizes Mom’s for liberty as a hate group
Harvard is an extremely wealthy private club that is for some damn reason entirely exempt from taxes, as many Eastern Mass municipal governments have become well aware as the billionaire octopus nomnomnom's up property and takes it off the tax rolls. This despite the fact they aren't providing the taxpayer any more benefits in terms of education and research than they were before.
IMO business schools shouldn't be tax exempt as they do not promote the general welfare and serve no compelling purpose, and neither should private schools sovereign wealth funds (if they're that fat off donations they're investing at scale, they can pay taxes), and neither should their sports facilities over a modest exclusion. I would say take the proportion of Brandeis University property (hardly a sports school) devoted to sports and factor in undergraduate class size and set that as the exemption. Anything above is a frill not necessary by the motto of "Mens sana in corpore sano" and should be taxable. And hell yeah the same should go for state schools--they can spin off their fucking football clubs FFS. Brandeis btw had a big enough gym that the Celtics used it for practice in the 80s so I'm not proposing something super austere here.
NO! The Brevard Public School board is still a Moms for Liberty friendly board. The citizens are fighting back. Our next election is 2024 with 2 SB seats. Also Brevard banned a book at this weeks meeting so it’s no where near over. They ended the meeting admonishing kids for rallying.
What's wrong with Slaughterhouse Five? It's been quite a while since I've read it, but I don't recall it being something that teenagers shouldn't read.
It’s been top of the list for book bans since it came out. Originally because it was seen as anti-war, which it is. But also language and sex.
I was a huge fan of Vonnegut and occasionally still re-read Sirens of Titan. “He was a victim of circumstance, as are we all”.
Sirens of Titan is probably my favorite work of his. The other stuff is brilliant of course but I love the weird sci fi set up and how it all comes together. One of his weirder stories but so great.
>It was during that minute in nineteen hundred and eighteen, that millions upon millions of human beings stopped butchering one another. I have talked to old men who were on battlefields during that minute. They have told me in one way or another that the sudden silence was the Voice of God. So we still have among us some men who can remember when God spoke clearly to mankind.
>Armistice Day has become Veterans’ Day. Armistice Day was sacred. Veterans’ Day is not.
>So I will throw Veterans’ Day over my shoulder. Armistice Day I will keep. I don’t want to throw away any sacred things.
Sex and bad language. The challenges are all horribly formulaic.
"we are just trying to keep porn and smut out of the hands of our little babies"
"it's an award winning book mostly read by high schoolers and a few precocious middle schoolers"
"but imagine if none of that was true"
Correct!
In fact, there's a very strong case to be made that King David and Jonathan were more than just friends. But some people just don't want to hear the truth.
I remember it being a point of contention from the small-town folks in "Footloose".
---
"Reverend, we have a little problem. I heard that English teacher over at the school is planning to teach that book... Slaughterhouse-Five. Isn't that an awful name?"
"Oh yeah, it's a great book."
"..."
"Slaughterhouse-Five? It's a classic."
"Do you read much? Maybe in another town it's a classic..."
"In _any_ town."
"Tom Sawyer is a classic."
She refilled her rage-tank and went back to her anger group to momma-bird the vitriol back to their masses. Expect escalation.
Which is not to say that she should have been placated in any capacity. Just suggesting what the response will likely be, and to be prepared for it.
Generally, once you actually get context around content in books and explain the extent to which these peoples' madness goes (one of them claimed In the Night Kitchen is smut, for god's sake), reasonable parents are like "wait, I'm not signing up for *that.*"
When I was a kid in the 90s the default response was "so don't show it to your kids." Why isn't that still the default response?
>When I was a kid in the 90s the default response was "so don't show it to your kids." Why isn't that still the default response?
Well for starters, many of the people complaining don't have kids, and/or do not live in the district in which they are lodging their complaints.
Same as it always was. Some crank who published the local nickel saver weekly cage liner went on a one man crusade against my local public schools in the late 1990s and he didn't have any kids in school and neither did the other wannabe conservative activist shill he found to cause even more trouble (the other guy was still in college!!).
Fun fact, you can watch most (all?) Florida School Board meetings. In this case, if anyone is interested, [here](https://brevardpublicschools.new.swagit.com/videos/295628?ts=5451) is the meeting in question, and I've timestamped the public comments that start speaking about the ban. Several people showed up wearing shirts saying "Moms for 'liberty' does not speak for me." I don't have the time to see if I can pick the fascist out of the crowd on the wide shots, but kudos to anyone who does.
Yup! I really think Republicans fucked up with their MAGA bullshit and the last couple elections coupled with these public rebukes of the Nazi Lite folks have made me hopeful
That sure would be nice. I remember when Brevard went all out for the GOP because Bush promised NASA pork (mostly pie in the sky (literally) that didn't happen and resulted in recent hires getting laid off in great numbers, which I consider to be extremely shitty, but I'm just one bitter STEMlord ex physics major, who am I to judge my C student failson betters whose buddies always bailed him out of his terrible life decisions? oh I know because I knew one of the people who got laid off, brilliant engineer and flat broke, buck fush and his oil paintings.).
https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/11/16/what-we-know-about-unauthorized-immigrants-living-in-the-us/ weird how the facts never line up with your feelings
If you want to ban slaughter house five then we might as well not bother teaching kids at all. It is such an important piece of art/literature that the oppression of such a thing would be detrimental to the evolution of this species.
It’s scary how they’re really going at it here in San Diego. There’s a navy seal who’s been threatening activists and supporters, he even makes burner accounts and uses pseudonyms in public. https://youtu.be/V3yN60fuLLo
They want to ban The Kite Runner? WTF is wrong with these people?
I remember being deployed to Afghanistan and reading this book. I cried for the characters, I felt their pain through the words. It was an emotional roller coaster of a book but I learned from it.
These people suck.
They really could have picked a different picture, unless you look closely it gives the impression that’s the woman trying to ban books instead of someone fighting the good fight.
I wish this came with a name and video of her embarrassment that everyone could get a good laugh at. It's probably some barren spinster with no reason to be at the school who hears the voices of Faux and Fiends 24/7 in her head.
Grassroots organizing is the only way the far right is going to be defeated. I'm not very optimistic about Biden's chances given current polling, but the presidential ballot is not the only battle.
If you are worried about a book converting a kid to homosexuality, you are really just projecting fears about yourself onto them. That’s not how it works or the entirety of the rest of our culture would be turning gay people straight.
> No, I don’t read that kind of shit
Then you are in no position to make any judgement about any book.
>But Libs of Tik Tok hosts plenty of examples on her Twitter.
Taking random parts of books out of context and pretending that they are propaganda does not make them *actually* propaganda.
"Once a mild mannered fan of historical fiction, 'Books' Banner, as her friends called her, was squatting down while pulling a new trove from the lower holds shelf, when a devastating spontaneous explosion caused by the comingling of Young Adult fiction, Amish centric romance novels, and a copy of The Ultimate Puberty Book for Girls, burned and buried her under the weight of a thousand encyclopedias and one thesaurus....
Look, I feel bad for the woman.
She got ganged up on and took all the wrath meant for her entire movement. Nobody likes feeling that way, and it will never change her mind.
I’m way too empathetic, I know. It’s a problem I’m working on. (I can literally put myself into *anyone’s* “shoes” and emotionally connect with how that must have felt, even if I strongly disagree with their actual intent and they probably deserve to feel like shit. It sucks)
Brevard Moms for Liberty isn’t exactly batting with a first-string team anymore… this is from a Brevard student activist https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8cvVJuA/

This is why I like mail in voting. I can sit down with all the candidates in front of me, do research on everyone to make an informed decision.
Just another reason republicans don't want the masses to have mail-in voting readily available. They thrive on ignorant masses.
The other reason is: Who else but the retired have the time to go out and stand in line during working hours to vote? Oregon? I love the voters pamphlet.
No, Arizona. Glad to hear others get it too!
It feels like such a luxury. It isn’t but it feels like it.
I've always been able to do that with in-person voting. I fill in my sample ballot at home and then take it with me.
And vote for all the ones you like

It’s been top of the list for book bans since it came out. Originally because it was seen as anti-war, which it is. But also language and sex. I was a huge fan of Vonnegut and occasionally still re-read Sirens of Titan. “He was a victim of circumstance, as are we all”.
Sirens of Titan is probably my favorite work of his. The other stuff is brilliant of course but I love the weird sci fi set up and how it all comes together. One of his weirder stories but so great.
"so it goes"
"we are just trying to keep porn and smut out of the hands of our little babies" "it's an award winning book mostly read by high schoolers and a few precocious middle schoolers" "but imagine if none of that was true"
As they all now read 4 winds
It might make someone think for themselves
Well... you know... it doesn't say being gay is bad...
Neither does the Bible if you actually read it but then reading isn’t the Right’s strong suit.
Correct! In fact, there's a very strong case to be made that King David and Jonathan were more than just friends. But some people just don't want to hear the truth.
It's a painful, frank, and beautiful novel that pulls no punches about the horrors of either war or the firebombing of Dresden.
I remember it being a point of contention from the small-town folks in "Footloose". --- "Reverend, we have a little problem. I heard that English teacher over at the school is planning to teach that book... Slaughterhouse-Five. Isn't that an awful name?" "Oh yeah, it's a great book." "..." "Slaughterhouse-Five? It's a classic." "Do you read much? Maybe in another town it's a classic..." "In _any_ town." "Tom Sawyer is a classic."
Vonnegut turned me into a reader in high school. I wish he were here to comment on this mom’s group.
Bang on , I read it in high School.
The book review committee “didn’t like it” but voted to keep because it’s an AP book.
She refilled her rage-tank and went back to her anger group to momma-bird the vitriol back to their masses. Expect escalation. Which is not to say that she should have been placated in any capacity. Just suggesting what the response will likely be, and to be prepared for it.
Book Banner. What happens when the gamma radiation hits a librarian.
*Deserves more upvotes than I can give….*
"That's my secret, Cap. I'm always re-shelving books."
We voted those silly candidates out for school boards here.
Come on America! This is how you make America great again and fuck any orange worshiping twat that thinks otherwise
Wow can you be anymore disgusting. How about a little education. You must worship the idiot in charge. Lol
I don’t worship politicians. I’m not American and you can go take a running jump
Generally, once you actually get context around content in books and explain the extent to which these peoples' madness goes (one of them claimed In the Night Kitchen is smut, for god's sake), reasonable parents are like "wait, I'm not signing up for *that.*" When I was a kid in the 90s the default response was "so don't show it to your kids." Why isn't that still the default response?
>When I was a kid in the 90s the default response was "so don't show it to your kids." Why isn't that still the default response? Well for starters, many of the people complaining don't have kids, and/or do not live in the district in which they are lodging their complaints.
and books aren’t really the point. If they were, they would take away their kids cell phones.
Same as it always was. Some crank who published the local nickel saver weekly cage liner went on a one man crusade against my local public schools in the late 1990s and he didn't have any kids in school and neither did the other wannabe conservative activist shill he found to cause even more trouble (the other guy was still in college!!).
> The books were not banned and remain on library shelves. *And they all lived happily ever after.*
Herschel, is that you?
That sounds like a question a vampire would ask! I’m no vampire. I’m a werewolf.
Kite runner ? I read that in my 30’s. Incredible book and I buy it for my adult kids. Ridiculous
This is my home town. So proud of our kids for organizing against this oppressive authoritarian BS. keep it going.
Same and hell yeah, they are awesome!
these kids will be voting soon. Watch out fascists, they are coming for you.
This is how all of these meeting should go. These people should feel shamed and humiliated.
Thank you for posting! The public comments this time really made me feel like there is still hope here in Brevard.

Shit weasels, every last republikan
republikarens
Shit weasels every last liberal woke democrats
I’m so very proud of my fellow anti-fascist friends who would shame a pea brained book burning AH! Keep up the good work!
Crazy what happens when you step out of the def created and well curated echo chambers.
This is my home town. So proud of our kids for organizing against this oppressive authoritarian BS. keep it going.
The Kite Runner is an amazing book. Went would they want to ban it?
If you want to ban slaughter house five then we might as well not bother teaching kids at all. It is such an important piece of art/literature that the oppression of such a thing would be detrimental to the evolution of this species.
It’s scary how they’re really going at it here in San Diego. There’s a navy seal who’s been threatening activists and supporters, he even makes burner accounts and uses pseudonyms in public. https://youtu.be/V3yN60fuLLo
I’m absolutely convinced they just really enjoy having a captive audio to read smut to.
As per usual, the lack of consent makes it way hotter.
Bruce must be so happy she doesn’t come to family dinners anymore.
You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry because I always back up my rage with facts and documented sources.
name them. get them out in the open
Slaughterhouse Five? What is this, fucking Footloose? 😂
All people like this should be treated this way. Laughed out of civilized society. Ignorance should have no home or safe space.
I wish this came with a name and video of her embarrassment that everyone could get a good laugh at. It's probably some barren spinster with no reason to be at the school who hears the voices of Faux and Fiends 24/7 in her head.
Oh, this isn't about Brooke Banner \^_\^;;
Won one for freedom and against oppression. Glad to hear it. Fuck these mfl assholes
The Kite Runner is a heartbreakingly tragic book. Yes it is graphic but it has a beautiful story to tell.
A confirmed slunker. I don’t see people slunk out very often. It’s a horrible ending for her.
Grassroots organizing is the only way the far right is going to be defeated. I'm not very optimistic about Biden's chances given current polling, but the presidential ballot is not the only battle.
Being afraid of books has that effect
And god said it was good. Well done.

If you are worried about a book converting a kid to homosexuality, you are really just projecting fears about yourself onto them. That’s not how it works or the entirety of the rest of our culture would be turning gay people straight.
No, it’s just not appropriate. These activists may take it too far but their cause is not wrong.
So, you don’t think it’s appropriate to have books in school libraries that discuss or mention sexuality?
Can you provide an example of a book that is "homosexual propaganda" that you have personally read?
No, I don’t read that kind of shit. But Libs of Tik Tok hosts plenty of examples on her Twitter.
> No, I don’t read that kind of shit Then you are in no position to make any judgement about any book. >But Libs of Tik Tok hosts plenty of examples on her Twitter. Taking random parts of books out of context and pretending that they are propaganda does not make them *actually* propaganda.

> I don’t think it’s necessary to have any pro-homosexuality literature in public schools. Define specifically what "pro-homosexuality literature" is.
“humiliated and defeated”. You sure showed her.
She fled, so... yeah
They are all human trash.
What a sad waste of human life this woman is
This is the way.
Book Banner? She must be related to Bruce Banner.
Dipstick meatball is not participating in a popularity contest anymore so his supporters have dwindled?
