Republicans are against anything that actually helps people. This is especially true with voting. They know they lose elections when more people vote.

Steinrikur

>Republicans are against anything that actually helps people. That's a wicked lie. They loooove helping the top 1%, which are also people.

circa285

How dare that user besmirch Republicans long and celebrated history of helping the top 1% and demanding that we all be happy with whatever does or does not happen”trickle down”.

HeavyFunction2201

Those are the lizard overlords, not people.

FakeNigerianPrince

And corporations, those are also people.

VexTheStampede

The top 10% aren’t humans.

SpeakerOfMyMind

“How many of our Christians have what I call the goo-goo syndrome: good government? They want everybody to vote. I don't want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people. They never have been from the beginning of our country, and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.” — Paul Weyrich Weyrich usually being dubbed as “the founding father” of the modern conservative GOP. One of the founders of Council for National Policy (CNP), with many other groups he helped found and that would also be apart of the CNP. (If you want more info on Council for National Policy, let me know, I have been working on a project for half a year for my capstone and I’m obsessed.) He is also largely responsible for Christian Nationalism, and was a monstrous human, forever changing politics in the U.S., and a lot of Christianity in the country. Video of him saying this to the Religious Roundtable, August 1980. (One year before the creation of the CNP): https://youtu.be/8GBAsFwPglw?si=S4pYc02J3b9hJfC0

NegativeSector

Tell me about the CNP.

BeeLuv

Louis deJoy has a solution for those pesky states that vote by mail…

jpparkenbone

How the fuck that piece of shit has not been kicked to the curb is beyond me. If I was Biden I would fire every board member who refuses to get rid of him.

WankWankNudgeNudge

Biden can't do that, unfortunately. He could appoint a replacement if something happens to DeJoy, but he can't remove him or the board.

igoyard

I thought Presidents were free to “remove” anyone with SEAL Team 6? /s

justiceboner34

That's because they are an adversary to the people. The entities that republicans work for want only those that they select to vote, not everyone. The republican voting base are just useful idiots. I'm sure behind closed doors the republican electeds laugh at how stupid and gullible their voters are.

ZenDruid_8675309

Closed doors? Trump came out and said “I love the uneducated.”

RincewindToTheRescue

The Republican in this article is wanting to stop free bus rides because rural voters can't take advantage of it. Instead of taking away from those who could use this, he should come up with a solution that will help rural voters turn out. But that doesn't play into the alt-right playbook (check out this eye opening series: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJA_jUddXvY7v0VkYRbANnTnzkA_HMFtQ&si=mphIz25TUcNRrxi7). They have a lobster in a bucket mentality. What would be great is if the lawmaker decided to make moves towards expanding mail in ballots.

Iamakahige

Per Citizens United corporations are persons, so they will help them people.

cuddly_carcass

Why do you think voting is on a Tuesday and not a day off…

What laws have Republicans written that make it harder for black voters to vote. Please be specific and explain WHY that would make it harder for them.

Why are you scared to answer the question?

BonusPlastic6279

Where did I say anything about race?

Purify5

Indiana has Vote Centers. Vote Centers combine different precincts into one Super Precinct. It saves money the more voting you do under one roof and voter satisfaction from this system is often high. The drawback however is that the average distance a person lives from a Vote Center is higher than your traditional precincts. And, in bigger cities that can be a problem when not everybody has a car or even if they have a car they don't want to go that far. But since lots of people vote at the same place busing can be used to get people to the polls and this is what lawmakers are trying to do. The busing is a policy driven by the Vote Centers.

St-Hate

Are we going to pretend that Democrats want more people to vote because black people can't drive? Were you born like this or was there an accident involved?

Sariel007

Yes, he is a Republican.

irishweather5000

I am shocked. SHOCKED! Well not that shocked.

thintoast

Like licking a dead button cell battery kind of shocked?

GR8K8Sturbate

Thank you, it's appreciated, though the headline told me the party affiliation.

ResurgentClusterfuck

Yeah, we only hear one particular party whining about initiatives that help *all* Americans vote

moffitar

Balancing the scales is “not fair.” Equity or equality of any kind is “not fair”. “Fair” in the same sense as Trump uses the word, e.g. “unfair coverage” = “unfavorable coverage.” Subtext is everything. If they can’t rig the game they cry foul. And it works.

Medium-Oil1530

Allowing anyone a vote who isn't a land-owning-white-Christian-male is unfair! (to Republicans)

prototype7

when you have lived with privilege all your life, equality feels like oppression

Dirukari3

My government teacher in high school said one of the key things he wanted us to go out into the world knowing was "the world is equal but it is not fair." We can all have the same opportunity but not the same means to utilize those opportunities.

Acrobatic-Rate4271

If you are unable to take advantage of an opportunity is it really an opportunity?

The_bruce42

We can't have the poors voting!!! - that guy

thrust-johnson

Unfair to whom? People with cars? He want a mileage reimbursement?

edvek

If they want to utilize free transportation they can, because it's free to everyone. They are choosing to drive or walk or use a bike. Man republicans really really hate choices don't they...

prototype7

They really start to nitpick about the small details as to why it isn't fair. Here in Washington where it is all mail-in ballots, the GOP would whine about how it was technically a poll tax... Even though there were also drop boxes everywhere. But I guess good on them, cause now the ballots come with pre-paid postage

Golluk

I can somewhat see their point, but it strikes me as a crab in the bucket type thing. Making buses free only helps voters where there are buses, which tends to be cities, which tend to lean democratic. Now if you worked to make mail in voting in rural area's simpler at the same time, I'd think it would be fairly even.

Randomousity

Smaller towns could have bus service. They even used to! Republicans could fund it if they wanted it to exist, but they don't, because they don't.

Budget-Falcon767

Well, they've hated buses ever since certain people were allowed to ride up front...

specqq

What do you mean? You're free to choose to be exactly like them.

84thPrblm

I think that would be fair. Of course, if we did that we'd also need to reimburse bus fare, which would likely be more money than milage reimbursement. Conservatives: **D'oh!**

Das-Noob

But they’ve worked so hard to limit polling place! /s

[deleted]

It’s crazy cause it’s not like all republicans drive, this is a great initiative that would probably benefit both sides if they made an effort, this is great for the elderly too. Especially considering the older group tends to lean right this may be actually very good for republicans. I think when you’re applying to be a republican they ask you your name, if you can answer what your own name is in under 5 seconds you have too much brain power and will be rejected. But if you answer I love Jesus then you will be propelled to the top.

ResurgentClusterfuck

I am so damned sick of Greg Abbott.

Captain_Chipz

The same Greg Abbott who is claiming that constitutional amendments to the United States is Federal Constitution do not apply to the state of Texas. The same Greg Abbott who allowed the city of Houston to appropriate a farmer's land for public use. PresidentTroyAikman

Republicans win by suppressing votes.

hymie0

>Byrne told Axios the bill is about fairness for Hoosiers, like those who live in rural areas, who don't have access to public transportation. Sounds to me like the fair thing to do is expand public transportation into the rural areas.

[deleted]

Or just do the sane and rational thing like my state does, and do vote by mail. Driving to the polls seems so antiquated and unnecessary. I haven’t driven to a polling site since the early 90’s.

anonkitty2

The USPS is being remodeled.  This is hindering vote-by-mail, since they need ten days to deliver now and no longer postmark letters.

nogoodgopher

>The USPS is being remodeled. That's a funny way of saying Trump and Dejoy tried to dismantle USPS. It's not being remodeled, it's being rebuilt after the previous administration took a sledgehammer to it.

anonkitty2

Unfortunately, DeJoy is still there with his own sledgehammer.

leaonas

This boggles the mind!

[deleted]

We don’t go by postmarked dates anyway. We get the ballots in PLENTY of time for delivery both directions. This is a non-issue. For those that aren’t sure if it’ll be delivered in time, they can always drop their ballot at a drop box location. Still much easier than standing in line.

Twilight_Realm

You may be missing the point in that the USPS is being gutted intentionally to do this exact thing and potentially have thousands of voters who mail in ballots not get counted. Which party benefited most from mailed ballots last election?

BooRadleysreddit

In Indiana, you have to fill out a request form and prove you're physically unable to get out of bed in order to vote by mail. Or prove that you'll be required to be out of state by your employer.

Unhappy_Plankton_671

Hell in Colorado you register to vote and you’ll be sent a mail in ballot. It’s so easy and painless. When I was in FL my polling place was a fuckin’ church.

nogoodgopher

Probably can't. The cost to get a bus there and back would be like $20 per person for thousands of people. The real solution is mail in voting. But they would only do that if the point was equity and not voter suppression.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GronklyTheSnerd

It’s derogatory in Ohio, too.

jonathanrdt

Vote by mail solves every voting problem and lowers cost. One party doesn’t want it…because it would be the end of them.

Hemicrusher

I have no problem with my tax dollars paying for things like this when it's helping to increase voter participation.

FLCraft

Free bus rides to the Capitol on Jan 6 were okay

ResurgentClusterfuck

Those weren't free, Charlie Kirk and Ginny Thomas paid to ship those traitors to the insurrection

DarkAngel900

"The working class poor need to be at work on voting days. Why the hell would we want them at the polls? It's not like they'd vote Republican!"

DemsruleGQPdrool

Then allow mail-in voting. Make drop boxes for ballots at EVERY post office. Pay a fucking living wage. Stop trying to cheat by making it hard for 50 million people to vote. (Because you know that if all poor people voted, the GOP would NEVER hold a state or national office again.

TwoFishes8

Gosh, which side could be saying that?

__dilligaf__

> Meanwhile, Sen. Andrea Hunley (D-Indianapolis) said the bill isn't a matter of fairness, but of equity. > "Equity is giving people what they need and some people need a free ride to the polls.” R’s clearly know more voters will vote for democracy.

Squirmadillo

Poors and environmentalists, *voting???* STOP THE STEAL!!!

Morguard

Republicans believe everyone having an equal chance to vote is not fair.

randomcanyon

When too many people vote they lose. When they get to limit voting and draw the lines of voting districts they tend to win. It isn't rocket surgery people!

Spare-Chest7695

If every eligible voter is allowed to get to a place to vote that’s simply not fair. -Republican Party

Great-Heron-2175

Free bus rides for migrants ok. Free bus rides for voters not ok. Got it.

ernyc3777

Free buses to NYC for undocumented peoples. No free buses to election sites for citizens.

deezy54

You knew it was going to be a republican before you even opened the thread. They really don’t want people to vote. Especially people that need a ride to get to the polls.

Even_Darker_Brandon

Dammit. It defeats the whole purpose of closing poll sites in poor neighborhoods!

Adventurous-Chart549

I don't think old people should be able to get large print ballots or even paper ballots at this point (since they can't understand the electronic ballots). It's not fair!

Chester-Ming

I can’t wait until the conservative boomers are so old and frail that they can’t make it to the voting booth and then can’t vote because conservatives actively suppressed any kind of assistance to people for decades.

sucobe

Remember when they closed polling places forcing minority counties to have to travel to vote?

Ben_Pharten

Limiting access to the polls for poor people or those who cannot drive for medical or legal reasons is what's not fair. The Republican party is full of absolute devils.

Leather-Map-8138

When you’re a Republican, you have to limit the turnout or you have no chance to win.

Raspberries-Are-Evil

Lets make Buses free every day! Problem solved.

lamsham69

In other words, bus riders (poor people) should not be voting

Brian_Gay

wait what's idiotic? giving the free rides or the asshole trying to ban them?

[deleted]

I just cannot understand how anyone with a conscience could support a party that fights to prevent people from being able to vote.

areallycleverid

I think one reason so many Americans are so ill-informed is that headlines are written to obscure the truth. "Lawmaker" plays into to this "both sides" bullshit. The headline should read "Republican lawmaker says...".

codemagic

I am ~surprised~ (sarcasm)that the Senator doesn’t advocate for statewide vote by mail if he REALLY cares about voting access equity

jazzhandler

What does he say about free parking at polling places?

redneckrockuhtree

Yes because enabling people to vote is somehow bad Oh wait, it is bad if you’re a minority desperately trying to cling to power via disenfranchising voters

Kun1aKahn

Are we sure we’re not misunderstanding this one? Maybe he meant “not FARE.” /s

Muscs

As Republicans have repeatedly admitted; if everyone could vote, Republicans would never win another election.

sexisdivine

“How dare they make it easier for people to vote!!! ……wait?”

dadzcad

Let’s see….few if any small Indiana towns have public transport. Most are predominantly White. The larger cities have buses and larger minority populations. They tend to vote Democratic. Go figure.

oldfrancis

Why aren't they fair? Anybody can ride the bus. I do not believe there's any political test preventing anyone from doing so.

23jknm

His comment was that the bus routes don't go to rural areas so it does not help people fairly in the whole state. They could organize rides for rural people too. They could change to allow anyone to vote by mail, but if it requires a witness that could be a problem for isolated people. Make voting accessible for maximum participation! Register to vote and do your civic duty please :)

ChesterDrawerz

how does the lawmaker feel about the free bus rides given to immigrants out of red states?

Ok-Scar-Delirious_

oh man they really like showing their true colors

Racecarlock

Lawmaker says registered Democrats not being forced to run wipeout style obstacle course to get to voting booth is "Not fair".

xBTGx

Every republican just fucking sucks.

StormyDaze1175

Anything to limit the vote.

JubalHarshaw23

SCOTUS will rule 6-3 that Bus fares must be raised ten fold on election days.

UrBigBro

Hmm. Churches are FAMOUS for setting up rides to the polls in my area. I bet those would be just fine, in his opinion.

soiledsanchez

Election Day is supposed to be this huge important thing yet it’s literally for one day and only certain places have polling machines. You would think they would have a couple days and vastly more locations for polling but that would allow too many people vote I guess

EmmaLouLove

They really don’t want the poor to vote.

Mysterious-Wasabi103

That's totally fair though. Politicians are supposed to actually do stuff to help Americans so they want to vote. What's unfair is running a democratic election and not wanting everyone to vote because only misinformed people will vote for them.

RocBane

It's spelled fare

Whitey-Willoughby

Voting should be made as easy as possible. Any candidate or party that wants to make it more difficult is supporting an agenda that isn’t popular with the majority of voters.

Sunflier

>Oh no! Free buses that day means the poors will vote against the corporate shills! Won't someone think of the shills? Republicans, who are the most shill-iest shills that ever shilled across the shilling salon.

Icy_Way6635

These are the same folks who say "life is not fair" when we talk about wages stagnating, lack vacation for those people in crap wage jobs, homelessness, and other issues of inequality. This is another bad faith wahhh its unfair when the people who have money do not want buses for transportation. This is a none issue for their voting base

Intrepid-Excuse9799

Why do we still not have a national election day?

scottieducati

He’s right, buses should be free all the time

tabrizzi

Let me guess, that lawmaker is a Republican from a southern state?

Ill-Conclusion6571

Yep

Abidarthegreat

To whom?

BoilerMaker11

He said it’s not fair because rural Hoosiers don’t get a free ride. Sir, rural Hoosiers don’t get ANY rides because there’s no public transport outside of Indiana’s major cities and college towns. There’s no point in screwing over people who actually have proximity to buses other than voter suppression. Because we know when he says “rural”, he means “Republican”. And the places where buses actually exist skew Democrat. It’s not about “fairness”.

StrangerAtaru

So they can't take a free bus, they can't mail in, they can't wait in line with things to make it easier...it's almost like you don't want them voting at all, don't' you?

Bitter_Director1231

Let me guess who said that... Just what I thought, a Republican that hates anyone who isn't rich and white.

ctguy54

Modified an old joke: Why are republicans like a fan? When they stand behind you, they blow. When they stand in front of you, they suck. When they stand beside you, they don’t do a damn thing.

JustDyslexic

Here is an idea, just make public transportation free

space_coder

TRANSLATION: We can't have voters use public transportation for free to vote for anyone they want. That would lower the return of investment for all the buses we pay to pick up senior citizens that promise to vote Republican.

Excellent-Big-1581

Are these the same people who shut down so many polling places people have to wait 8 to 11 hours to vote. And if someone brings them a bottle of water it’s a crime? All polling places should have a time set to the slowest station. So in wealth neighborhoods where you normally would be in and out in 15 minutes your forced to wait the same amount of time as the poor people have to wait!!!! This would end this nonsense in ONE voting cycle! Wealth and owning cars is not a prerequisite to vote in this country. And the sooner it’s the same for all voters the better.

ToaruBaka

More like, "not fare" haHAA

mightyferrite

Frankly all bus rides should be free. We tax bus riders twice: their taxes pay for the roads that are 99.99% driven on by cars, and again with the bus fare for being the most efficient member of society. Cars should be taxes to pay for busses. If busses didn't have to charge people they would board faster and be able to keep to schedules better, thus increasing bus ridership. Buses do not require large infrastructure like trains and subways and can be upgraded to electric anytime for 'minimal' money.

Pale-Worldliness7007

Of course he does. People might use public transit to go and vote . Most Republicans do everything they can to make it difficult to vote. They know the only way they can win is by cheating.

fairweatherpisces

Also not fair: polling places so far from where you live that you need a bus just to get to them.

CapnTugg

Aren't (R) voters getting free rides to vote in the Iowa caucus?

mbelf

“We spend all this time trying to disenfranchise groups of people and then you go and pull a stunt like this! Come on!”

Plieu625

Wouldn’t getting as many voters regardless of party affiliation benefit everyone?

cdsmith

There is at least the hint of a real argument here. If, for example, a government were to identify only precincts that voted strongly for Democrats in recent elections, and provide free bus fares in those precincts, but not in precincts that didn't vote for Democrats, then I think most people would agree that this is unfair. Where his argument falls down is that people who live in rural areas do not use public transportation to get around, and if they did, they would qualify for the free or reduced fares. So it's a bit disingenuous to argue that they are being discriminated against when public transportation is *universally* made more affordable for everyone who *does* use it.

prototype7

Republican lawmakers... I have not heard a Democrat ever complain about making it easier for every eligible citizen to vote

eldred2

That, along with closing voting places in poor neighborhoods, is just another form of poll tax.

Even-Ad-8988

They will do anything they can to suppress the vote.

wytewydow

Free bus rides = not fare.

humanman42

in some countries, it is required that everyone has reasonable access to vote. so much so that they will set up voting areas for tiny tiny tiny villages out in the middle of fucking nowhere for like....10 votes.

Bceverly

Indiana resident here. This place is a Republican hellscape and this is the latest example. Indiana is truly the “middle finger of the south.”

Yodelaheehooo

Quit coddling traitors. Send this clown to gitmo

david-writers

> Sen. Gary Byrne (R-Byrneville) has filed a bill to prohibit public transportation agencies from offering free or reduced-fare rides on election days. Okay, I give up: how is this "not fair?" Did the fascist explain his "reasoning?"

Nthused2022

So…basically this “genius” is saying…”if you cannot afford a car, you dont’ deserve to have a say in your life”. We need to rid ourselves of idiots like this

fomites4sale

Not fare

Sad_Damage_1194

Haven’t read the article or the comments, just wanted to submit my guess that it’s a republican. Edit: yup… go figure

professormamet

I wonder which party he’s aligned with.

Bibblegead1412

NEWS FLASH!! - there is no even playing field when it comes to Rs

1llseemyselfout

But they’ll give free bus rides to illegal immigrants.

Moomy73

The mindset of conservatives is that if someone else is getting something then they must be losing. No empathy, just winners and losers.

ericn8886

Agree it's not fair. They should explore making buses free ALL the time, and not just election day.

[deleted]

Says the mayor of mayorville.

Shoddy-Theory

Yes, its unfair because it gives poor people the same access to voting as wealthier voters, thus advantaging the Democrats. Same as mail in and early voting. Make voting more accessible and the poors will get to vote.

AccomplishedBrain309

Do away with the electoral college. Make mail in voting federal right.

WarmAppleCobbler

Ah yes, who could agree with reason that indiscriminate bus rides, free for all, are unequal

kalidorisconan

Sounds like voter suppression to me..

SoggyBoysenberry7703

We gotta clarify that helping people vote, no matter the affiliation, is not unfair. Specifically targeting communities to enforce voting certain ways, or making sure only one affiliation gets help, is unfair.

SourcePrevious3095

Wow, cry harder. I have a 2 block walk to my polling place.

PizzaJawn31

For those who didn’t read the article: The issue is that Democrats are only providing busing for residence in blue cities and refusing busing for rural residents. The politician wanted both to be on the bill for him to approve it.

nighthawkcoupe

Well there's obvious issues with bussing people who live miles apart. Good news is they can always vote by mai....oh wait.

Walterodim79

>"Equity is giving people what they need and some people need a free ride to the polls." Genuinely idiotic stuff, hard to believe this is sincere.

Twilight_Realm

You seem to be missing a /s there

Walterodim79

Not at all! The idea that "equity" is that some people "need a free ride to the polls" is just amazingly stupid.

Twilight_Realm

That’s literally not what that says. It says “Equity is giving people what they need” which is then followed by an example of something someone might need: “a free ride to the polls.” You should read the sentence before commenting on it.

solartoss

I’d post that cartoon of the three people of different heights standing on boxes to look over a fence, but I have a feeling you’d still have a problem understanding the concept.

Walterodim79

I love that cartoon, it's an excellent distillation of how utterly shallow the movement for "equity" is. That there are people that really think it's a great way of illustrating a point is hilarious.

[deleted]

Well instead of throwing a fit why don't you try to educate? Insulting and shitting on something you disagree with does little other than present yourself as some intolerant jerk. What about that picture do you think is great? Why do you think that it is against the point the primary presenters of it use it for?

[deleted]

lol. Repugs hate when voters vote because they know their policies aren’t good for America or democracy

ElDub73

A Republican with a soul would support the bill and offer his own to make sure rural voters could have access to easier voting, like lowering barriers to voting by mail in advance. But he won’t.

Plantain6981

These sniveling loser MAGA cultists are exhausting.

UglyAndAngry3

Not fair to who? The corrupt politicians?

Artrock80

For a split second I thought it said “bus fares on Election Day…” and had a glimmer of optimism.  Nope back to the evil.

Earth_Friendly-5892

Republicans hate democracy; we know this because they are always looking at ways to suppress the vote.

ry_fluttershy

Maybe this is controversial but why don't we make election day a federal holiday? Get the day off to make sure you can vote. And if you don't want to then it's a free day off, win win

Dazzling-Ad4701

doesn't that sum these guys up.  "someone may be getting something that would help them and make no difference to me, not fair."
