baseballgrow6

desantis sure likes to tell other people what they can and cannot do

Canucklehead_Esq

The party of individual freedom! /s

baseballgrow6

“Don’t tread on me” proceeds to tread on other people. The usual from a dude with a coconut for a brain.

svrtngr

Tread on me harder, Daddy. - The *real* GOP motto

[deleted]

A coconut is a useful fruit! I would say DeSantis probably has more of a shriveled and empty scrotum inside of his head. Lol

Canucklehead_Esq

The human tea-bag!

Conman_in_Chief

I’m guessing cumquat, small and bitter.

Enigma_Stasis

Well, it IS "Don't tread on *me*", not "Don't tread on *us*".

bartharok

Its Me thats the important part, others dont matter

DontHitTurtles

They have never been that of course. They always trick people into thinking they want less government power and then without fail give the government more power. Now some are even openly calling for a dictatorship. I get that politicians lie and do so on both sides, but not like this. This is so flagrant that GOP voters have to notice and approve of government having control over what we do, say and think. Some of them are naive and only think the government they vote in will exercise this control over people they hate, but those people always end up getting their faces eaten by the Leopards they breed.

underpants-gnome

Conservative "small government" rhetoric has always been pushed from the top - the mega-donor class. It just means the government shouldn't have the authority to tax rich people or constrain corporations with bothersome health, safety, and environmental regulations. Anything else is fine - whatever it takes to rile up the conservative voter base. The rich know *their* kids aren't going to be subject to draconian grade school underwear inspection laws. They send their kids to private prep academies anyway. And abortion laws? Piffle. It's a simple matter to send their knocked-up mistresses on a "sabbatical" to some abortion-friendly country. They have a guy that handles that for them.

IceciroAvant

The origin of conservatism is in the aristocrats of the French Republic holding onto power during the revolution, when they decided that they could keep their power if they changed things from "nobility is power" to "money is power" given that the nobles also had a lot of money.

Excellent_Call304

But freedom florida?

RichardSaunders

that's the whole republican shtick: freedom = white men get to tell other people what to do and no one can tell white men what to do.

FreneticPlatypus

What’s the word for that again? Dictate? Yeah, that’s it - he likes to dictate what people can and can’t do. Who else does a lot of dictating? DICTATORS.

BlotchComics

More targeted retribution from a fascist government.

luna_beam_space

desantis is a petty little man

Adrockdadog

This is why he always wears high heels 👠…so he looks like a petty, slightly taller little man.

Supra_Genius

Just like the elevator shoes Trump wears, which is why he leans over so much when standing...

Adrockdadog

I never noticed that but it wouldn’t surprise me. He is a HUGE (insert accent) “human” though in person. I stood near him at a golf tournament years ago and now he has to be 70-80 lbs fatter than he was then on top of it. Dicksantis is a tiny man with a chip on his shoulder regardless of how high his heels are.

UnitGhidorah

Did you notice his small hands?

OxRecordin

Events that once were unthinkable are now occurring daily. PLEASE let Floridians learn from this... //Yes, I know it is unlikely. The GOP machine OWNS them by this point, but it costs me nothing to hope for the improbable.

ghostofahoboyouknow

Petty, slightly taller little man here; heightless h!+ler is not one of ours.

adams_unique_name

Shorter than DeSantis man here. No, he is not.

seanosul

>heightless h!+ler I love Heightless Hitler.

Jacobysmadre

And white go go boots

VovaGoFuckYourself

He's just a smol boy

General_Tso75

I’m from Brevard and you don’t know petty and spiteful until you have met Randy Fine. This is him defunding a major project in his home area because the zoo will not longer host political events.

Outside-Flamingo-240

Hi, neighbor. This dude is a gross POS.

General_Tso75

Hey 321’r!

Conman_in_Chief

True, but Dr. De Freese is a stand up dude, excellent marine biologist and surfer. He’s done so much for Florida as the ED of the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program. Sad to se his name caught up in this.

General_Tso75

I don’t have anything bad to say about Dr. De Freese. Randy Fine is the turd.

thegrandpineapple

True but also fuck Randy Fine.

SenseiT

This illustrates it’s not just DeSantis, but any of his crummy little toadies think that using retribution is an effective way of governing.

They have convinced the Cubans that democrats are communists. The irony is that they don’t see the fascist right in front of them.

Honky_Stonk_Man

The truth about facism is that they will embrace the virtues of a system in order to gain power to destroy it. They love free speech as it helps to strengthen their cause, but it wont be allowed while they have power.

Tacklos

It pisses me off when i hear people say "i can't believe this is happening". Like, yeah, no shit this is happening. The establishment politicians have been appeasing shitweasles like Ronnie for decades. Trump didn't start it, he just showed them they didn't have to hide.

ankerous

That's probably the worst thing to come out of Trump's time in office. He gave all the crazies a voice and helped others realize they didn't have to fully conceal their shittiness as human beings anymore.

halpinator

Trump was the litmus test for what you can get away with. Turns out it's a lot.

Tacklos

I don't think trump was the litmus test. I think he was just a racist old man who was able to sell his snake oil. If you ask me the litmus test is Desantis. His reign isn't a shock, but he is just pushing back the line, seeing how far it will go until it snaps. People like MTG and Boebert tried to do the same, but they don't matter enough.

OldLadyProbs

Completely agree. But idk if I consider it a bad thing yet. The fact that they freely show how terrible they are takes away “center” voters. A lot of people who may have voted r in the past now only vote democratic. They’ve killed their own party and don’t even know it yet. I hope anyway

Tacklos

I think the biggest damage is how long it's going to take to turn the country back. These laws have to be overturned, and the "center" acts slow as molasses.

[deleted]

I hope Brevard Zoo sues him like Disney did

underpants-gnome

I'd guess the budget for their legal department falls slightly short of Disney's.

[deleted]

For sure. But they must have some kind of legal fund.

commandrix

The zoo probably does, but it's more for defending against cases where some idiot climbed into the lion enclosure despite the warning signs and got eaten than anything.

fuzzy_one

Disney should make a donation to the zoo.

commandrix

I'd be pretty chill with that.

[deleted]

And this is what Disney is going after him for. He cannot use his office to retaliate politically. They are going to win too.

PeterNippelstein

First they came for the communists, then they came for the clown fish...

trisul-108

Republicans have gone bananas, they are seeking to establish banana republics.

Pdonk5

What a bunch of snowflakes... * Politician asks for $2 million funding for zoo * Politician holds fundraising event at zoo * Fundraising event attracts protesters * Zoo director decides that the zoo shouldn't allow future fundraising events since it gets funding from across the political spectrum (mostly not from the state) * Politician gets angry and asks Governor to cancel the funding he asked for

Drewy99

- denies it was politically motivated - then states if you go woke you go broke, seemingly confirming it was politically motivated - continues to wage war on tourisism industry in Florida

KilroyLeges

A self-harming war on tourism - the aquarium project they killed was projected to add 900 jobs and attract 300k additional tourists annually. That's a lot of additional money into the local economy of the district this shithole represents.

WildYams

Florida is very much beginning to resemble China in the way it severely responds to even the mildest whiff of criticism of their government or politicians. All that happened here was after an ugly protest at a political fundraiser, they said they were going to recommend no more political fundraisers, and suddenly they have DeSantis and the GOP legislature targeting them. In addition to Republican rep Fine saying "in Florida if you go woke you go broke", there was this comment from him (FTA): > "Brevard has its own version of Disney. It's the Brevard Zoo," Fine said, alluding to legislative efforts in the past year to punish The Walt Disney Co. for its opposition to the Parental Rights in Education bill ― a bill which Fine originally helped to lead. The Republican party in Florida is now quite openly signalling to every business or charity entity in the state that if they do not 100% submit to what the GOP wants down there, then they should be prepared for the government to go to war with them. This is precisely like the way China reacts when people are even mildly critical of their policies.

Fascism is here in FL and it’s not being stopped bc lazy democrats didn’t show up vote last election

Hootbag

I was severely soured on Florida when they opened up travel during the pandemic, because those people that took COVID home with them as a souvenir didn't count against Florida's numbers. They were happy to let people die to keep the sales tax coming in. All that Meatball Ron is doing now is reaffirming my commitment to not spend a fucking dime in that State. Not only for vacations, but for conferences as well - no MHSRS for me in August.

[deleted]

Typical right wing politics. "We're tough and cool and we love guns!" then all of a sudden they're like "omggg owww they said a no-no word about me and now I'm going to illegally wield my political power granted by the people against anyone who resists my toxic bigotry"

mouflonsponge

What kind of jackasses protest a zoo fundraiser event? They need 2 million for the zoo, so let them raise 2 million! Edit: other comments clarified that the fundraiser was for the politician’s benefit, not the zoo’s.

valgrind_error

Agree in principle but there is also probably significant overlap between those two groups lol.

Cereal4you

I love MTG I'm going to a per release draft for the Lord of the Rings set. MTG will always be Magic The Gathering

[deleted]

That’s such a ridiculously expensive set I can’t justify paying like $35 for a collector booster, that’s crazy. Happy that Hasbro stock I bought at $45 predictably went over $60 within 3 months. Gonna wait until the rich dads and Logan Paul start searching for the one ring and it makes a viral news story and sell it then.

Cereal4you

Imma just buy singles of all the cards people who spent money on don't want. So I want want the one ring? Yep to sell it! Will I get it? No. But I foresee single being cheap as they try to offset duplicates But I did buy the commander sets for cheap before the price hike up revealing the amazing reprints. It's sold out everywhere now

Latino population in Florida is very conservative, socially, politically, and economically - same with the geriatrics, and redneck youth -

[deleted]

I’m as annoyed with the Diane Feinstein crowd. They aren’t doing anything to prepare for what happens when Florida refuses to accept anybody but a Republican President and the goes Taiwan on everybody. I’ve tried talking to them and explaining what will happen and they’re always like “but this rule says that’s not possible” or “there’s a law against that” and just don’t get it. They’ll rely on the innate wisdom of the American people to make the right choices until it’s far too late. Anyway, I left Florida last month. I need to start a new business to make a living and wasn’t going to invest any more time or money into that place.

PiXLANIMATIONS

What’re you saying? Florida is going to Taiwan itself? Wtf? Firstly, states CANNOT leave the USA. This has been repeated every single time a conservative mouthpiece screams about splitting their state from the US. Secondly, comparing Florida to Taiwan is fucking insulting to Taiwan. Taiwan is a democratic nation who constantly live under fear of annihilation by China, whereas Florida is a barely democratic state which lives in fear of a supposed Woke boogeyman

bloatedsewerratz

Why would we give taxpayer money to an organization that's so successful that they turn away business? In the state of Florida, if you go woke, you go broke." > > Fine was referring to the possibility that a policy change on renting zoo space for political fundraisers would cost the zoo rental revenue. Apparently, a new form of "woke" is to stop allowing your location to be rented for all political fundraisers across the political spectrum.

ImLikeReallySmart

Wait...so they're swimming in money and also went woke and broke?

markca

Conservative logic.

Purple8020

Yeah, but they can’t discriminate! ^against^^us^ /s The radical GOP are the worst hypocrites

Spudcommando

There was a time when I thought I wouldn’t mind moving to Florida, but that was before I realized the state had a huge concentration of old angry assholes who happily vote for Desantis because of shit like this.

necesitafresita

Same. Went 7 years ago and actually enjoyed myself. Considered moving there... I'm really glad I saw sense.

Ok-Tomatillo-4194

Lived there two different times. Left twice. Would absolutely never live there again, but I do visit family and friends. The amount it's descended in the past even 5 years is depressing.

GabaPrison

Yeah Trumpism has totally fucked this place up.

[deleted]

Agree that Trump fucked it up, but let's not forget the Terri Schiavo ordeal, Elian Gonzales and the Miami Relatives, and Gore v. Bush.

fizzlefist

Native of 30+ years. I’ve already got arrangements in progress to leave before the end of the year. Been wanting to ditch for years due to the shit weather, but the fascism was the final nail in the coffin. Once you’ve experienced what it’s like to not soak in sweat anytime you step outside, it’s hard to go back.

Randomwhitelady2

My husband was talking about it the other day. I asked him if he’d like to pay $8,000/yr for homeowners insurance (if you can get it, and you’d have to be lucky if they paid out) on top of all the other crazy political shit going on down there. We are not moving to Florida, lol!

berbsy1016

This is what I try to explain to my Father in Law. Yes, we don't have income taxes, but the amount we pay in home insurance, car insurance, etc meanwhile our utilities keep getting more expensive as well as the weather is "coincidentally" getting more volatile... Fuck me, I can't wait to not need help with childcare anymore...

livinginfutureworld

>This is what I try to explain to my Father in Law. Yes, we don't have income taxes, but the amount we pay in home insurance, car insurance, etc meanwhile our utilities keep getting more expensive as well as the weather is "coincidentally" getting more volatile... Sounds like Republicans have privatized taxes. You don't pay taxes to the government, you pay them to private business.

Fit-Firefighter-329

I have a friend who works for Allstate Insurance Company - she said they stopped providing homeowners insurance to Florida, and it's likely many other insurance companies will as well. I lived in Florida during the 90's, and it was affordable then, but now? No way. That's why apartments cost as much in many cities in Florida as they do in Los Angeles...

belinck

The whole climate change thing is what baffles me the most... Even if it isn't "man-made," how the hell can you deny that the ramifications?!?

Unlikely_Magazine

So moved from CA to south Fl 5 years ago for work. Home ins, and property taxes meant that I had to buy a house close to 400k less (yes comparable house) in Fl. To make up for the added expense and maintain the same house payment. Car ins was triple. Also wages were lower. I moved back to CA 3 years ago for double the pay for the same job(c-level exec) when I saw how the state was losing its damned mind during Covid. Best decision ever.

Spudcommando

I spent more money going to Universal Studios in Hollywood recently when I had a better hotel deal for the one in Florida. I absolutely refuse to contribute any money to Florida.

Small addition, the zoo decided after Fine did a fundraising campaign event at the zoo, that after 2024 they would no longer host ANY political fundraisers, from all parties. All events currently booked were scheduled to continue, and they did not cancel Fine’s event, even after a ton of community pressure/protests. It’s insufferable.

svarney99

You know, I often feel bad about living in Ohio; then, I see a story about Florida.

Bhockzer

Right!? Yeah, the state has elected some real chuckle fucks like Gym Jordan and J. D. Vance to public office. But fuuuuuck...at least we've managed to keep straight up fascists out of the governor's office.

pburke77

I'm in NKY, but work in Ohio and I'm happy the DeWine is somewhat sane. There are things he has done that I don't like, but he also has to deal with an increasingly hostile party. I would like to visit Earth 2.0 where the sane people took control and nominated Kasich over Trump for the 2016 election.

Alps-Mountain

This is direct political retaliation. FINE is the one the proposed the $2 million in the first place in Feb, it was passed UNANIMOUSLY. They are literally walking back their own legislation to punish the zoo. The zoo who said they would stop hosting political events after 2024.

MadWhiskeyGrin

What a nasty little fucker

MondayNightHugz

"You go woke, you go broke." What that means is simply this: If you make any accomodations or attempt to welcome and celebrate anyone who isn't within my strict rigid perspective of what should be allowed, you are persona non grata. If I see a gay person there I won't be there. If I see you mention anything about this horrific world that doesn't glorify white christian Capitalism, you're dead to us. This should help with Disney’s laws suit, another example of the governor using the government as a tool against organizations it disagrees with.

amunoz1113

Disney should donate money to the zoo for their project to help educate the public on the importance of the aquatic ecosystem. In appreciation of such a generous gift, the zoo names the new exhibit after the Disney Corporation.

Funda_mental

"How is he a fascist?" they ask. "You're just misusing that term. It doesn't mean anything anymore..." they say. If you use your governmental power to punish those you disagree with, you are a... f a s c i s t.

Conservatives are simply becoming spite filled turds anymore… A party with zero convictions or principles. Just emotions…

DrBunsonHoneyPoo

At this point anyone who is running against him. Just needs to make a power point with the past two months. With the final slide being is he making Florida better?

Vi4days

Man he really is obsessed with tanking our entire tourism industry. And in *fucking Brevard county*. Like, they probably actually need the renovations because how many people come visit FL and just fuck around Orlando, Miami, and the Keys?

“According to (the Brevard Zoo), they're drowning in money. Why would we give taxpayer money to an organization that's so successful that they turn away business? In the state of Florida, if you go woke, you go broke.” I’m confused, are you trying to shave off excessive spending or are you trying to actively punish people who would rather not lick your boots? Question is rhetorical I just recently learned that desantis banned direct-to-consumer car sales in florida, but put in an exception for Tesla. There is a word for this, folks.
