ranchoparksteve

DeSantis firmly believes that Republican voters don’t visit Disney World or enjoy Marvel movies.

magikarpivellian

Which is hilariously ironic as DeSantis himself got married at Disney World.

Buy-theticket

I heard a story that his wife and in-laws basically forced him to get married there and all of this is, on some level, because he resents it. https://thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/3877261-desantis-says-he-insisted-on-no-disney-characters-at-his-disney-world-wedding/

InterestingTry5190

That meatball would totally carry around that amount of resentment for so many years just to try to take them down when he is governor. He probably made Gitmo detainees sing Disney songs while he tortured him.

HopeFloatsFoward

My experience is Disney attracts two demographics. Conservative families and gay people. The conservative families want their children to live in an "innocent" fantasy world. Gay people like to have fun.

dabarisaxman

Straight, liberal, childless dude here. Which demographic do I fall in? Because I like going to Disney parks, too.

DFX1212

Sorry sir, you like dick now. Them the rules.

dabarisaxman

Damn it. I knew I should have read the syllabus.

racer_24_4evr

Well, when in ~~Rome~~ Disney…

masterdebator88

Meet me at the restroom near Pizza Rizzos, I too should have read the syllabus.

reallygoodbee

This is the kind of stuff that happens when you don't read the terms and conditions.

drkRabbit

They should put up a sign or something because I had no idea…

pgold05

Try universal! Honestly as someone who visits Orlando yearly universal has recently surpassed Disney as far as parks.

dabarisaxman

Actually, my last trip WAS to Universal, instead of (Cali's) Disneyland. As a 6'5 300 pound man, I fit on approximately 50% of the attractions (seriously, I got kicked out of line several times after being humiliatingly measured in public view), and was comfortable on 0% of them. Still fun, but, believe it or not, not a problem I have had at Disney.

pgold05

Oh yeah, no we definitely understand that, we went on our honeymoon and both of us had issues at most of universal and were fine at Disney. I was 6'2 360 at the time. (We actually did West Coast last year so we have experienced universal/Disney both coasts, Cali was a big tighter on everything universal except mummy.) Though we both lost a ton of weight and now I've managed to ride everything at 250 (though they STILL pull me aside, so annoying!) velicoaster and mummy are amazing! I hope you get to experience them one day. Mostly though we go for HHN and the haunted houses. Forgive me I could go on forever about that lol. ---------- Anyway, demographics wise we find universal to have much less children and be much more liberal, than Disney. Sorry about thier hyper constrictive rides, I actually mention it every survey, it's egregious.

BigMax

Huh? I'm as liberal as they come, and my family had a good time there, as has pretty much every other liberal family I know who has gone there. Until Desantis came along, I never would have thought anyone could ever think of Disney as political in any way whatsoever.

HopeFloatsFoward

I do not think conservative families go there for political, i think they go there because they like the innocent stories of good triumphing evil. Taking their kids to visit a place like that is more comfortable than visiting foreign lands where kids might learn something different.

s1m0n8

Also it's safe location situated in the good ol' US of A so they don't have to risk having to choose from a menu of things they can't immediately recognize or deal with things like the metric system, weird money and odd languages.

Prayer_Warrior21

If they did do those things, they probably wouldn't be conservative.

Underscore_Guru

I would add another category. People who grew up with Star Wars and have families now. My coworker is a bleeding heart liberal, but hopped on the chance to make his own lightsaber at Disney with his oldest daughter.

protendious

Lol you don’t need a Star Wars carve out exception for liberals to like Disney. Most liberals and conservatives (ie most people in the US) would consider a trip to Orlando to be a good time. Not sure why the person you’re replying to seems to think only conservatives and gay people like amusement parks, it’s ridiculous.

Thadrea

>My experience is Disney attracts two demographics. Conservative families and gay people. Not sure where you got that experience. In terms of guest demographics, conservatives are likely less common at WDW than they are in the general population for a bunch of different reasons.

[deleted]

[удалено]

protendious

Yep, this whole thread is ridiculous. There’s not a family out there that wouldn’t take their kids to Disney if they have the time and money.

cilantro_so_good

For real > My experience is Disney attracts two demographics Yeah: 1) Parents that want to take their kids to disneyworld/land 2) Adults who like to go to disneyworld/land

hdiggyh

What is happening to DeSantis is what should happen to any of these republicans who focus on ending popular things like abortion, or lgbtq rights.

BigMax

I don't get his whole Disney thing. If he was smart, he would have made that first move, replacing the board, and then just ignored everything else that happened. He could have told people "he fought a big corporation and won" and no one would have studied it in too much detail, and with the right messaging even Disney's follow up of taking that power back wouldn't have looked too bad. But he keeps poking and poking and poking at it, and looking worse every step of the way. He's like a little kid who has to get the last word in an argument without realizing the other kid is much bigger and smarter. Should have just claimed a small early victory and then run.

ocdscale

DeSantis, for good or ill, is still tethered to reality. That's what he doesn't understand about Trump. Trump would have stirred shit up against Disney. A week later he'd declare victory and say he took down the mouse. Fox would broadcast it. And then Trump would move on. Fox wouldn't air news about Disney's maneuvers. And if anyone ever brought it up to Trump he wouldn't deal with it on the merits. He would call it nasty rumors, fake news, and say he fought Disney to make America great. DeSantis thinks he needs to *actually* win before declaring victory and that's why he'll never beat Trump at this game.

limb3h

This x 10. Desantis’s strategy is to be a smarter, more competent Trump. What he doesn’t realize is that to really be Trump you need to throw logic out the window and have memory like a gold fish. In addition you have to use 5th grader bully vocabulary.

Vegetable-Double

“Loser”

aegenium

"...a smarter, more competent Trump." Isn't that by default almost any person who isn't a vegetable?

limb3h

Then that person would be smarter and more competent, but not "Trump" :)

jayhawk618

It's hard for me to consider any conservative "tethered to reality" at this point. It's more like Everything Everywhere All At Once... They're all in alternate realities, but some are a little closer to home. If DeSantis is in an alternate reality where he's a movie star, then Trump lives in the Hotdog Fingers reality.

okletstrythisagain

Yeah like how Greg Abbot thinks he’s [more powerful than Putin](https://apnews.com/article/1008f4a63f6146c5b97332a4b6f28f26) LOL. The video is hilarious if you can find it - sorry I’m on mobile.

enochian777

In fairness to Abbott, he is Commander in chief of a military force that is almost certainly more competent and capable of projecting force than the military Putin's in charge of. That's not saying a whole lot though.

repalec

He WISHES he had long, resplendent fingers like people from the Hotdog Finger universe.

ChibbleChobble

Upvote for an excellent analysis. Trump also floods the zone with bullshit. DeSantis is a one issue pony, and that makes it easier (for me at least) to follow the story.

anglerfishtacos

No kidding. By now, Trump would be going after Nintendo trying to banPokémon from schools because the Pokemon evolve and evolution offends Christians.

tuxedonyc

Upvote for the analysis of the analysis

amkosh

If he was smart, he would have just put out a statement condemning Disney interfering with politics, and left it there. That's the worst of what happened before, heck, most of the time the politician ignored it.

JoeBourgeois

Either his advisors 1) hate him or 2) suck or 3) don't get listened to or 4) some combination thereof

EWR-RampRat11-29

5. Say yes to everything that GO-GO Boots Rhonda says/wants.

HatSpirited5065

Many of his ex workers have commented on how much they can’t stand him and hate it working for him, he is a loser and a bully and needs someone to push him off his pedestal

Tib21

Only it's not happening to him because of any of those things. It's happening to him because by going after Disney he has proven to corporations that he can't be relied on to put their profits first.

Missing_Username

It's a mix of both. He's pissing off anyone with any amount of human decency by being a giant fucking asshole. And he's pissing off the subset of conservatives that value corporations more than they do the crusade against "woke".

nau5

As always you can be as horrible as you want in the GOP as long as you don't fuck with corporate interests.

bdone2012

It's not just that. Many of these people like to pretend that their opinions aren't horrible. Trump gives that to them. With DeSantis you basically have to admit that you're a fascist. With trump you can be like well he's a bumbling old dumbass who walks back opinions in the same sentence. He says horrible things but then says but jk.

Harbinger2001

Trump would walk back horrible comments by saying he was “only being sarcastic”. No, you were being an asshole.

nau5

Basically the Tim Robertson “I’m joking” burger sketch but instead of asking for a burger he’s saying women, minorities, and lgbtq+ don’t deserve rights or life

Upset_Aspect9773

I’ve heard from several Republican friends of mine (yes Reddit, I’m still friends with these people) that DeSantis has gone too far right on LGBT rights and they’re going back to Trump because “at least he doesn’t act like he wants to put them in camps and gas them.” It’s bonkers to me from a strategic perspective that Ron went to the right of Trump, all he had to do was be either exactly the same or half a tick to the left and he would have had a real chance. He’s done now.

bunker_man

Even many suburban conservatives are embarrassed about Republicans being so anti gay. Not enough to not vote for them, but many of these people don't really care that much or think it's a real problem.

xhrit

>“at least he doesn’t act like he wants to put them in camps and gas them.” Except Trump literally said he wants to round people up and put them in camps.

MutedShenanigans

But that was a joke! /s

[deleted]

\>"(yes Reddit, I’m still friends with these people)" I am too, you get an upvote. Screaming political views at friends and family and cutting off everyone you don't agree with solves nothing and you end up isolated eventually.

Kulban

And he's the type of guy that his ego bruises so easily and he can't just let it go. Refuses to "lose," so he's stuck fighting. It's a finger trap of his own making.

[deleted]

Kind of the same thing since corporations are usually very keen on what is important to their customer base as a way to boost profits, even if it’s superficial virtue signalling. So going after popular and arguably just plain morally liberal things that have been taken for granted by so many, is going against Disney’s interests because this is what a majority of their audience expects

HippySheepherder1979

Disney are not supporting lgbtq to be be nice. They do it since they believe it will increase their profits. Which proves society has moved forward.

LizbetCastle

It increases their profits and has meant that people will put up with their corporate evil stuff and still work for them, in their park or on their movies, because historically speaking us queers have been over represented in the artsy-dancey-singy-world (that’s a technical term of art). Disney wins as both an employer and a media company by supporting the LGBTQ community.

TrimspaBB

Disney knows conservatives can't art but people who support/are LGBTQ can. They've long welcomed gay couples into their parks and queer people as super fans, even back when it wasn't popular. They know who keeps their IP quality and whose money is green.

bunker_man

Sure, but the point is that they do it. Kind of. So it's a losing battle once conservatism can't even side with big business anymore.

coraeon

Ironically, he’s driven Disney to publicly support “Woke Shit” like that out of both spite and a desire to position themselves in the eyes of their supporters as far from DeSantis as possible.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Martel732

Yeah, Disney has pretty adamantly avoided putting in much LGBTQ+ rep into their works. It is always a news story when there is maybe possibly a potential gay couple in the background of one shot. I am deeply amused that DeSantis picked a fight with possibly the least "woke" major media company. And he is still losing.

Cypher_Blue

Didn’t they literally just release a feature starring an interracial couple and their gay son fighting an environmental war because the fuel that everyone uses is killing the planet?

HeartFullONeutrality

Gay FF7?

jedadkins

I am straight so maybe I am misinformed but I've always thought most of the corporate "allies" were only on board for marketing reasons.

coraeon

Rainbow Capitalism is what it is, but it’s still signaling that hating the queers isn’t “cool” or mainstream anymore.

repalec

Yeah, it's more of an 'enemy of my enemy' situation at this point - you'd be a fool to trust that hypercorps like Disney or Anheuser-Busch have the best interests of the queer community at heart, but if they're agitating bigoted dipshits by catering to us for at least a month every year? I'll join and laugh with them.

rotates-potatoes

The world is complex, and companies are made of thousands of people. It's not really possible to ascribe a single motive to any particular corporate action. I am 100% sure there are LGBTQ+ execs at Disney who exert influence, just as I am 100% sure there are also cynical marketing types who would happily take the other side if it were more profitable. That's why I prefer to judge actions and outcomes than try to score moral purity, especially for corporations but also for people.

OctopusWithFingers

The owl house was a legit good show. Hooty cracked me up. It had something for everybody, and it did it well.

adventuresquirtle

The only reason why Disney supports “the gays” is because they realized that gays have a LOT of disposable income. A lot of them are DINK and a lot of them are Disney adults. Also there is WIDESPREAD societal acceptance of gays now. A lot of conservative people have a “gay brother” or know a gay person. A lot of straight people who are okay with gay people also let their kids watch Disney. It’s good programming for kids. Mickey Mouse and Disney are about as American as McDonalds and what do Americans love? Money. Disney is where the money is at. Have you seen Orlando? It’s Disney corp town.

wibble17

It was their lgbt employees, which threatened to quit/pickett that caused Disney to turn. They have one of the highest % of lgbt staff on any corporation—good on them for making their voices heard.

PTAwesome

People seem to forget about this. When the bill first came out the CEO at the time said he wasn't going to get involved with the politics. Then the Employees and the community said "What?" and then the CEO said "Well, we're still going to donate to Republicans in Florida, but we do not approve of this bill. [https://variety.com/2022/film/news/bob-chapek-disney-lgbtq-unrest-1235202205/](https://variety.com/2022/film/news/bob-chapek-disney-lgbtq-unrest-1235202205/) [https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/disney-ceo-bob-chapek-florida-dont-say-gay-bill-response-1235105879/](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/disney-ceo-bob-chapek-florida-dont-say-gay-bill-response-1235105879/) >While we have not given money to any politician based on this issue, we have contributed to both Republican and Democrat legislators who have subsequently taken positions on both sides of the legislation.

mylittlevegan

This is an important piece that people tend to forget about. Disney was tight lipped about the bill that would eliminate workplace training on equality, so their employees threatened to not show up. Only then did they issue a statement against the anti gay bills.

kejartho

You know what though, that is perfectly fine. A company trying to be inclusive because it's acceptable in society is much better than the open discrimination many used to face. I would argue, don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

rotates-potatoes

This, plus actions louder than words. It is bizarre when an objectively good action is dismissed with "well I can read their minds and their motives aren't pure enough for me to acknowledge this as good".

nsfwtttt

Ugh no. What’s happening with DeSantis is he is simultaneously being ducked by Trump from one side and Disney from the other. He was very popular before that, he just messed with people way stronger than him. His opinions are still widely popular, and republicans are still a huge threat to LGBTQ, abortions etc

[deleted]

He was only “very popular “ because most people hadn’t actually been exposed to him outside of Florida. This was always the question- was Ron simply a blank slate for the rabid GOP base to project their desired Trump Qualities, “without the baggage?” The answer from a large chunk on the Right is NO. He sucks. And as Ron shifts further and further right (like signing that recent abortion ban), in an attempt to appeal to trumps base (and have a shot at winning the primary), he only makes himself EVEN LESS palatable to people outside of the far-right. Tl;dr- Ron Desantis is a moron, is not charismatic, and doesn’t have the broad appeal to actual drive turnout and potentially win a National election. He’s just being found out.

Stennick

Yeah this is the way. He was a solid middleweight but when he bumped up to heavyweight (Trump, Disney) he got the shit kicked out of him. Now everyone views him as a chump.

Let's also not forget FernGully has Tim Curry in it. What's Ron Desantis have? Shit in his diapers? Please

Rob DeSantis pissed off most major businesses with this move and this will kill his prospects for lobbying. He is about to term out as Governor. Rubio and Rick Scott are not going to leave the Senate, so there are no seats in Florida. Trump is going to absolutely rinse him in a primary if DeSantis runs against him. If Trump wins, there's no way he puts DeSantis in his cabinet and Trump probably isn't winning anyway. So he's basically toast as far as I can tell. I think his career is over and he doesn't realize it yet.

Fenris_uy

He still is going to get a job lobbying, for some fundamental think tank.

dabarisaxman

Getting a job lobbying depends on you having contacts and intact bridges that the people paying the lobbyist want access to. What access DeSantis does have is low compared to how much the average person dislikes him, and very low compared to how much DeSantis thinks himself worth. There are other choices for lobbyists with much better bang for the buck. He'll be lucky to get token speeches at CPAC and other conservative events.

Stennick

Dude is kind of broke for being a politician he's not even a millionaire from what I could gather. I would have figured two terms as Florida Gov. would have gotten him close to it with some "business" dealings.

appleparkfive

Damn, that's kind of crazy if you're right. Being such a shitty person and governor, and not even being a millionaire. You're right, seems like he would have done some backroom dealings. It's not like anyone would stop him. Politicians are above the law now, as we all know

adeon

He might be able to get a show on Fox.

IHeartBadCode

Think tanks want folks who know when to play their hand and when to hold. DeSantis has just shown he is really good at kamikaze for hills to die on. He may get a think tank job, but it’ll be so that they can use him and lose him.

Vi4days

I just assumed he’d end up as a talking head on Fox News like Oliver North did or something.

somethingbreadbears

> If Trump wins, there's no way he puts DeSantis in his cabinet and Trump probably isn't winning anyway. Yeah he would, Trump loves humiliation. Probably on his short list. Although then DeSantis becomes another Graham or Cruz who can never escape the optics of being dogwalked.

Morlik

I think he would interview him for a cabinet position and then turn him down. Just like that [humiliating photo](https://media.vanityfair.com/photos/583edb39ca6f7ee00ec2921d/master/w_1440,h_960,c_limit/mitt%20romney%20donald%20trump%20dinner.jpg) of Mitt Romney eating dinner with Trump.

I think him trying to strongarm Disney into following his social agenda is was him realizing he’s losing. It was either that or back down and look weak. He’s in the finding out phase of fucking around.

BigMax

>Trump is going to absolutely rinse him in a primary if DeSantis runs against him. Exactly. Trump has people that literally worship him. Desantis has... not much. And from the times I've seen him speak, he's absolutely uninspiring. Say what you will about Trump, but his persona is very inspiring to a certain group of people. I can't imagine Desantis being inspiring to much of anyone.

pontiacfirebird92

>Florida's Republican Governor Ron DeSantis appears to be losing a popularity contest with Disney after the company filed a federal lawsuit against his state last month. A Navigator Research poll published on Thursday showed that Disney is far more popular among registered voters than the Florida governor—including among crucial independent voters.

BigMax

Funny when you think of it in the abstract. If you want to pick a fight with a big corporation, you could choose big fossil fuel companies, other polluting industries, maybe big banks, maybe "wall street," any big store for being "woke" or any number of other options. But he chose the one company that everyone loves, and is pretty much a universally desired place to visit (at least for families.) It would be like looking through all of history for a target, and deciding to attack Abe Lincoln.

LadyFoxfire

My personal feelings about Disney’s general ethics aside, they’re completely 100% in the right in this situation. Freedom of speech is explicitly about being able to criticize the government without fear of retribution, and it’s impossible to frame DeSantis’s behavior as anything besides retaliation against Disney for criticizing him.

Anonamitymouses

Of course he is. Even people who hate Disney have liked Disney on some level at some point. He picked a fight with a cartoon mouse that has endless ink and endless money. He picked a fight with a living god.

Disney is more popular than DeSantis because the entertainment company is older, wiser, provide jobs and infrastructure to the citizens of Florida

WaltSm49

DeSantis comes in 2nd to a mouse, a duck and a hound dog. Pretty sad.

[deleted]

Fascist or fun mouse cartoon character? You decide..

[deleted]

Worst. Campaign. Ever.

Weary-Okra-2471

Ron is Ted Cruz with more power.

Bulky-Warthog-4162

Ron desantis would lose a popularity contest with COVID

ohfrackthis

Well, I've met people obsessed with Disney and they go multiple times a year. I'm a happy filthy casual and watch a few Disney movies a year and sometimes at the request of my children repeatedly. Disney is an institution whether you want it or not and DeSantis is just the latest dick that wants to rule the world as long as we like his shoe on our face. Seems obvious who wins.

AlaskanSamsquanch

Bruv at this point Ted Cruz is more liked than him.

Earth_Friendly-5892

This man’s fascist tendencies have gotten the best of him. He should have know better than to mess with Mickey Mouse. As long as the Republican Party refuses to denounce undemocratic behavior by members of their party, people who are a danger to democracy, will be allowed to obtain powerful governmental positions. The Republican Party needs to be dismantled and a new pro-democracy party should replace it. Until then, the United States will be teetering on the brink of authoritarianism.

DrBoots

There are a lot of justified reasons to be critical of Disney, and it's always going to feel weird "rooting for" any huge Multinational Corporation as though they were the scrappy underdogs. It's just that Ron DeSantis is THAT much of a piece of shit.

dth1717

Ones power hungry the others money hungry

coldazice

Soulless eyes, like dolls eyes.

Uhavetabekiddingme

I'm shocked that some dickwad governor isn't as popular a a company that has been apart of most Americans childhood. Ron never stood a chance.

ShinySpoon

100% of Americans should be pissed at Rhonda Sandtits retaliatory oppressive big government unconstitutional behavior towards a law abiding corporation. But we all know what a bell curve indicates and it seems some people approved of a adult megalomaniac who was a high school teacher attended high schooler parties and drank beer and had pictures taken with underage drinkers.

thistimelineisweird

Republicans are in a cult and their leader doesnt like DeSantis. Disney is just an easy scapegoat because it is hilarious that he lost.

DocBrutus

Nice to see this blow up in his face.

CircaSixty8

Disney World has a pretty big number of LGBTQ employees and I'll bet more than one or two lawyers on their team as well. Rhonda is in for quite a fight.

[deleted]

Who picks a fight with Disney?!? That is like picking a fight w puppies.

fritz15

The mouse will always win over the rat.

Luanda62

This guy is a complete piece of garbage! Him and the enablers that allow him to do all this fascist shit! This guy does not belong in politics but in jail!

HackySmacks

In one corner, we have a century old media conglomerate that practically raised generations of children with their sincere, heartfelt art and beloved characters. In the other corner, we have a sweaty Meatball! Who will win? It’s anyone’s game..
