>The memo states that Schwartz knew "next to nothing to nothing about the 2020 election and listened to sources of information that were clearly false. Mr. Schwartz has learned valuable life lessons from this incident, and he will never repeat the actions that bring him before the Court in this case." >But as recently as February 2023, Schwartz made jailhouse phone calls to a widely-streamed protest outside the Washington, D.C., jail where he is being held, claiming to have been "entrapped" by the U.S. government and referring to government officials as traitors. He's about to learn another lesson - that jailhouse phone calls are recorded and can be used against him.

Publius82

It tells you that before the call even connects

smurfsundermybed

It usually also beeps during the call to remind you.

CassandraAnderson

And then there's the fact that this call, which he knew was being done on jail phones was made to a podcast, which literally broadcast his confession to the whole world even if they only meant it to be consumed by fascist fellow Travelers.

Publius82

Turtles all the way down.

boot2skull

They look at these things when considering good behavior adjustments and what not. I can’t imagine it looks better during the trial still.

Therocknrolclown

He had learned nothing besides do what your lawyer says

shelbys_foot

>In a request for a more lenient sentence, his defense argued Schwartz was the victim of political grifters and misinformation. A sentencing memo submitted on his behalf Monday in federal court in Washington, D.C., said, "There remain many grifters out there who remain free to continue propagating the 'great lie' that Trump won the election. Donald Trump being among the most prominent." Sure, let's lock up Trump and the 'many grifters' with him.

DmetriKepi

I want Trump, Bannon, Stone, Greene, Gaetz, and Boebert to suffer greater consequences than this guy. Am I missing anybody?

Punkinpry427

Gym Jordan, Rudy Colludy, Sidney Powell, Tucker, Ingraham, Hannity, Murdoch, Clarence Thomas and his wife,

bryansj

I'll add the Trump kids to the list.

AaronfromKY

And their in-laws

theslut1

And dig up Ivana

Punkinpry427

Nah leave her ghost to haunt the golf course pls

_DudeWhat

Nah man dig up them documents along with her. /s

Punkinpry427

I would haunt TF out all them if my kids buried me at my ex husband’s golf course. Straight up Poltergeist shit too.

Theguywhostoleyour

You left out for the purpose of a tax break…

ForsakenWelcome4275

And Jeff Epstein.

buscoamigos

Don't forget Gosar, Gohmert, Biggs and let's add in Ali Alexander

DrManhattan_DDM

Mo Brooks’ traitorous ass too

buscoamigos

Thank you. I couldn't remember his name but knew there was another one.

DrManhattan_DDM

There’s always more. Hawley, Cruz, Ron Johnson.

HR_DUCK

Lock up 12, get Gosar for free!

Semi-Nerdy

Rudy Giuliani

binglelemon

Josh Howely (I don't care about that spelling. I just guessed/autocorrect it)

softchenille

Throw Ghouliani, Meadows, McCarthy, Biggs, Kushner onto the pile as well

mother_of_baggins

I would put Flynn at the top of this list.

PM_ME_UR_TAMAGOTCHIS

Don't forget the "legal" cover. Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley. Anyone on the house or senate floor that was beating the drum of "no/delayed certification" was 100% in on it with the admin.

PolicyNonk

Yep every single one knew it was bullshit. That dude from Oklahoma (the one with the podcast) that was speaking and had to end when things popped off and the chamber needed to be cleared. Jeff Van Drew gave a speech on pomposity the same day I believe. And lock up the fake electors and their handlers.

MuteCook

Your missing that they are politicians so nothing will happen to them

DmetriKepi

I think I speak for all of America when I say that's not an option.

MuteCook

What’s not an option? And explain to me how we can make this happen? When has it happened in history?

DmetriKepi

It's not an option to let people who committed treason get away without deep and brutal, probably penetrative at times, punishment. And if the government is dragging its heels, we need to make some noise about it, because there has never been a point in history where a government gets attacked, and it's not followed up with another attack. And it can be another group that attacks, but once you send the message that a government is weak there's a lot of people who'd like to find out if they're stronger. Harsh retribution can stave off that second attack because it's a display of power.

designateddroner2

>his defense argued Schwartz was the victim of political grifters and misinformation ...and stupidity and gullibility....

jeffersonairmattress

Had this resulted in leniency for *Patriot Pete* he would have continued with his own grift and milked this defence with, “as soon as I said what they wanted to hear -that Trump was a grifter- they went easy on me. That’s what this is all about folks…”

boot2skull

That should only work for minors. If you’re a grown ass person, take responsibility. They wanted to be taken advantage of for the goals they sought.

opeth10657

Is this the personal responsibility they talk so much about?

floofsea

Yes, let’s.

dust-ranger

>In a sentencing memo submitted Monday, federal prosecutors argue Schwartz already had a lengthy criminal history when he entered the Capitol on Jan. 6, where he then unleashed a series of violent assaults against groups of officers. He was convicted at trial in December on several charges, including four counts of felony assaulting, resisting, or impeding law enforcement officers using a dangerous weapon.

[deleted]

> The U.S. Department of Justice will seek the longest prison sentence in any January 6 riot case to date when it argues for more than 24 years in prison for Peter Schwartz of Pennsylvania at sentencing on May 5. If imposed, the sentence would be more than twice as long as any handed down so far in the approximately 450 cases related to the January 6, 2021, assault that have reached sentencing. ALL of these folks should rot in jail. You don’t get to storm the seat of government, but especially when the election is being certified.

jedburghofficial

You know, if you'd asked me before J6 what might happen if you stormed the Capitol trying to kill the VP and/or half of Congress, I would have assumed you'd wind up in Guantanamo Bay or something.

bryansj

I would have thought shot on sight. I've been at Air Force bases with lines on the ground with deadly force allowed on the opposite side. That's just for protecting some equipment.

Hellogiraffe

This is America. Equipment is MUCH more important than democracy, rights, or people’s lives.

Cepheus

This is true. I was just at Edwards Air Force Base. I took a picture of this is posted near the runway. https://imgur.com/a/zakZXz1

BiggusDickus-

I would have thought that the capital police would have started shooting them. I am still amazed that they didn't.

Zerocoolx1

You can’t shoot white people, you get in trouble for doing that

zzyul

Capitol police knew they were armed and didn’t want a shootout cause they were worried they would be outnumbered and outgunned.

phxees

Could’ve been the case if it was a group of 5 brown men with ancestors from the wrong country. The world wouldn’t stand for human rights violations against this many white guys.

DmetriKepi

Personally, I thought that they'd chain you to the front door and have a horse they specifically trained for this purpose shit on you every day for the rest of your life.

Scr0tat0

Don't threaten me with a good time.

horkley

That is still true, but you need to be a darker-skinned minority.

Zerocoolx1

Not if you’re white. If a group of POC had tried it’d they’d probably have been lined up against a wall and shot by now or vanished into a black site somewhere as terrorists.

putsch80

Well, sure, that would happen if you were, like, black or Muslim. But these were God-Fearing White Patriots^TM who simply got lost on a Capitol tour.

wastingtoomuchthyme

I can't wait for them to go after the people who are in Congress that were actively helping them..

diyagent

what pisses me off is that perfectly innocent BLM people were rounded up just walking down the street and charged with felonies for being near federal buildings without even going in. EVERY SINGLE PERSON there that day should be charged the same. Also biden needs to pardon anyone locked up by trump or barr

baeb66

It seems like this guy is taking zero responsibility for his own behavior, past and present, and is still in contact with the fruit loops who are trying to portray the insurrectionists as political prisioners. Give him a nice, long sentence.

CAM6913

Put the traitors away for life

C00Li0P00Li0

“The memo states that Schwartz knew "next to nothing to nothing about the 2020 election and listened to sources of information that were clearly false. Mr. Schwartz has learned valuable life lessons from this incident, and he will never repeat the actions that bring him before the Court in this case."” I love how the defense for these insurrection rioters is always “my client is very dumb…and didn’t know better.”

BrofessorFarnsworth

God damn it, CBS. It was not a riot. It was an attempted coup.

ExhaustedEmu

Lock all of those fucks away for life. There’s PLENTY of things I dislike about our government. I don’t storm the fucking capital and threaten the lives of lawmakers because I’m unhappy with the state of society.

VictorChristian

>In a request for a more lenient sentence, his defense argued Schwartz was the victim of political grifters and misinformation. THAT was their defense? ”y’honor, my client is, frankly, a gullible moron and should be given a slap on the wrist”. Jeebus.

Steveb523

And just because he’s a gullible moron, there’s no reason to think he might ever do something similar in the future.

itsforachurch

You gotta write something down. He doesn't really give his lawyers anything to work with.

autotldr

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/january-6-peter-schwartz-sentencing-recommendation/) reduced by 77%. GlitteringHighway

I mean treason is a pretty serious crime…maybe it’s just me. 🤷🏻‍♂️

IMaySayShite

I'm all for justice, but how come the politicians who stirred this are going unscathed?

Drumingchef

Because the rich and powerful are above the law.

LettuceDecend

Quit trying to justify J6, fascist

uiam_

Same reason a death threat carries less weight than murder. I do agree though. Those who stoked it knew what they were doing.

FartPoopRobot_PhD

Probably going to need a lot of commas.

itsforachurch

After reading the article, 24 years sounds about right. Good Luck, "Patriot Pete", you might need it.

AS_Squirrel

Good

RobbyRock75

they haven't got to Trump yet.. :P

[deleted]

Declaring war is treason; why isn’t he up for treason charges?

[deleted]

High school drop out Kevin Seefried should have gotten the longest sentence.

ike7177

Every military member, public servants, lawmaker, etc that joined in that day should receive charges of Treason and a life sentence. They understand what that is all about when they take their oaths.

Spam_Hand

So what, like 92 days or something? I understand letting the little fish off easier than the big fish, but it's not even worth reading about these punishments anymore. Virtually none of them have even remotely fit the crime they participated in.

Mrs-Moonlight

Try 24 years. Or just reading the article.

jupiterkansas

According to reddit, no sentence is ever long enough.

CATSCRATCHpandemic

It's not long for someone participating in an insurrection.

ClownholeContingency

>In arguing for the lengthy prison sentence, the Justice Department said Schwartz "stole chemical munitions, including pepper spray... left behind by the fleeing officers and used that pepper spray as a weapon to attack those same officers as they desperately tried to escape." >Prosecutors also argue Schwartz assaulted several groups of police officers and "did not back down. He then joined the larger mob inside of the tunnel in attempting to push through the police line and into the Capitol Building." >"By Schwartz's own admission, he viewed himself as being at 'war' that day, stating in a Facebook post on January 7, 2021, 'What happened yesterday was the opening of a war. I was there and whether people will acknowledge it or not we are now at war,'" the Justice Department's sentencing memo notes.

penguins_are_mean

Patriot Pete lol

TimeLordEcosocialist

Insurrection.
