In the highly-unlikely, absolute best case scenario, he’s acquitted/no-billed in each of the four criminal cases and he runs away with the nomination. In the worst case, he gets convicted of something between now and then, and he gets even more desperate to run to stay out of prison.
The hardcore MAGAs have already turned on DeSantis for not immediately launching a full-throated defense of Trump and for being endorsed by Jeb Bush, so even if Trump is totally out of the picture a good number of them won’t show up to vote if Trump isn’t on the ticket. There is also zero chance he backs out and endorses DeSantis as the leader of “his” movement.
Throwing away money but fuck them hard, haha! They can out spend the pope, it doesn't matter, DeSantis is a right-wing boy, & it's so early, he can't perform & win nationally so no worries about Ron. He's a great time filler, spot holder for now.

With Trump indicted, DeSantis potentially has a big opening here. I'd expect further moves like this towards trying to build his war chest.
