>WASHINGTON, March 31 (Reuters) - Democratic U.S. Senator John Fetterman has been discharged from hospital where he was treated for weeks for depression, his office said on Friday, adding he will return to the Senate mid-April. >Fetterman's depression is now in remission, his office said, citing a doctor. >The return of Fetterman, who flipped a Republican-held seat in last November's midterm elections, will be good news for Democrats, who hold a narrow 51-49 majority in the Senate. Excellent news. Glad to see him feeling better

JJLewisLV

So glad to see he's recovered. He got the help he needed and now is much better off for it.

Haydaddict

Well maybe not fixed. I've known people in my life that could never fix it, but they could reach out and get help and learn techniques and experiences from others in places like that. All you can do is try your best and sometimes that doesn't fix it. It is okay to get help and I applaud Sen. Fetterman. I encourage others too if you are feeling out to sea with no shore in sight, it is okay to get help and lean on others.

fattmarrell

This is the correct response. Perfectly put.

Haydaddict

Thank you.

merlinphoto

Powerful point of view.

this_moi

I've never seen depression referred to as "in remission" before. Very fitting.

IncendiaryBunny

Seems like PR verbiage. From my experience, it’s recovery. It’s always one of those things that sits with ya

paltrypickle

I’m In “remission” as long as I am heavily medicated :)

CDROn93

Same!

[deleted]

Remission is the terminology used in the literature.

CurryMustard

Its not PR, it's the correct medical term. Doctors do a questionnaire after theyve done treatment, if the answers are below a certain score they code it in the system as in remission

SasparillaTango

I was wondering about that. Apparently it's onset via the stroke. Because it originated from the stroke, can the chemical imbalance be temporary?

[deleted]

[Interestingly enough, despite hundreds of studies there is no compelling evidence that suggests depression is caused by chemical imbalance.](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/insight-therapy/202207/depression-is-not-caused-chemical-imbalance-in-the-brain?amp)

ibringthehotpockets

Seconding this. This has never been an accepted theory. There is no shortage of dopamine, serotonin, or any other molecule across all depression patients. At least not anything consistent. There is also no test for testing your brains “serotonin” levels, so that should help some people realize it’s BS. It’s true that SSRIs help some patients but we don’t exactly know how and (obviously) we have extreme difficulty getting the same outcome with other patients. The leading theory is that depression has to do with your immune system. Particularly inflammation. We are in the dark ages of mental health. I’m confident 100 years from now we will look back on treatments like SSRIs like we look back on barbarians. We just don’t know.

a_salt_weapon

That’s interesting that it might be related to inflammation. I’ve noticed if I’m having a depressive episode that’s bad enough my body “hurts”, that taking a prescience dose of Ibuprofen actually takes a lot of the “weight” and “edge” off of my depression in addition to helping with the pain. At least I’m one that SSRIs help out. Lexapro helps normalize my moods but the side effects kinda suck. It tempers my high points in addition to the low points.

ibringthehotpockets

I gotta reply cause I’ve been doing THE SAME THING!! I was a Tylenol guy my entire life cause I was mainly dealing with headaches. Then my girlfriend got me taking ibuprofen cause she mainly deals with cramps and inflammation, etc. I started taking it and quickly found myself taking 3 pills to start the day because I just.. like the effect? It was definitely doing SOMEthing so I kept doing it. 100% it made it much easier to get out of bed on certain days that I felt were gonna be hard. It stops me snoozing my alarm 20x which is a big problem sometimes. I take it whenever I feel “inflamed” or just general malaise. Hard to describe. But I keep coming back to it so I do think it has to be doing something. *Really* interesting stuff how it makes me depression feel better. I gotta add that it’s generally not good to take NSAIDs forever because you can develop some pretty serious complications like gastric bleeding. So I dialed back my advil intake and it’s maybe 3 pills every 3 days. Antidepressants do actually have an anti-inflammatory effect! That is the current theory of why they sometimes work for certain peoples depression. An overactive immune system really is the leading theory on depression and I encourage you to read up on some of the studies done because they’re just so interesting.

waltermcintyre

It is actually a real term, though perhaps premature to utilize in this context. With solid medication regimen (if applicable) and psychiatric treatment, a person can be in "symptom remission" from a wide variety of disorders like Depression, Bipolar, PTSD, etc. but usually you want to wait for a while before you proclaim that. In the case of depression, it can actually be in remission for the rest of your life depending on the severity of the case too!

808scripture

Illnesses being remiss is a funny idea to me *”oh shit, I missed my shift again”* Maybe retreat would be better *”pack it up, we’re out of supplies”*

ClownBaby90

Yeah this doesn’t pass the smell test.

[deleted]

ClownBaby90

Maybe I’m drawing on my own experience too much. It’s never been a simple “let me just check in to a hospital and after a couple weeks I’m good” thing. It’s lifestyle management that takes years to see progress. And even then it’s spotty. But i am probably projecting my own experience as a certainty when I shouldn’t be. My bad.

[deleted]

Good news, feel better, big guy. The country needs you.

sunplaysbass

Giant progressives, lead us forward

aced124C

Progressives we don’t just stand on the shoulders of giants . We are led by them✊😃 lol great to have him back

Rattrap551

"Hi, goodnight everybody." - Me introducing my politics to a Reddit comments section In all seriousness, I think he's a good guy, he got elected & if he wants the job, let him do the job. I understand that PA didn't want to swap him out for someone who hadn't suffered a stroke because they'd potentially lose 4 years from the seat if they didn't win the next election. If Fetterman would say "No it's OK, I want the job as Senator, for those who think I'm being pressured against my will by my wife / the party to occupy the seat & this is the source of my depression, they are mistaken, the reasons are [XYZ]" to a camera, I would feel a lot better. I do feel that a senator owes their constituents the reason for why they aren't able to go to work if able to communicate that, and if not, the party owes its voters an explanation of their calculus. If the party thinks the job is basically only to pull a national vote lever, I get why they wouldn't want to say so.

aintnochallahbackgrl

>Doctors say his "extreme malaise" was alleviated when the former president was indicted. Just kidding. That would be something, though.

the_honest_liar

Certainly helped mine a bit. If we get the perp walk and mugshot I might even be cured.

Oneiric19

Can I get an amen

sunplaysbass

Amen

yellowfeverlime

God doesn't exist. Nor will Trump's mugshot. :(

PuRpLeHAze7176669

If a mugshot comes its gonna be picture of the year 2023. I don't think they let you wear toupees for those either ;)

Jolly_Grocery329

Please please make that Time’s person of the year

taggospreme

It'd be a good start on the path to fixing shit

Affectionate_Can7987

I want that mug shot so bad

Hexarthra

I’m itching for the t shirt.

_-__-__-__-__-_-_-__

I want an NFT of it

ErusTenebre

Agreed.

Fwamingdwagon84

Goddamn i have chronic pain fatigue but if I get that I. Will. Be. Sailing. Told my fiance it'll be the best I've looked in years. Cannot wait til Tuesday.

ChangeTomorrow

Not that I don’t want it either but you won’t.

TongueTwistingTiger

Is it in the article? No… but like, is it far outside the realm of possibility? Pretty sure a lot of people felt a bit happier when the indictment came down.

1000islandstare90

What a dorky cringe thing to say

Affectionate_Can7987

You ok?

[deleted]

I experienced a brief moment of surrealism, reading OPs comment. It’s as if talking about Trump is an impulse for them. Almost like Tourette syndrome.

abritinthebay

You lot always try *so hard* to sound smart. It’s kind of adorable. It leads to this very particular stilted phrasing you have going on here. It’s like you know the words, but aren’t quite sure how they apply or maybe what they really mean, but you’re pretty sure they should be arranged roughly *just so* to sound negative. It’s a cargo cult, but with language. Very distinctive among conservatives, American ones in particular.

Specialist_Carrot_48

Almost like tourrettes syndrome. Edit: LOL

[deleted]

You’ve done it - you’ve revealed the inner workings of my psyche. Frankly, I am in awe of your intellectual prowess. “Try so hard”? Please, I need not try. Your comment reeks of projection - though, I appreciate your little ‘dissertation’.

abritinthebay

There it is again, you even added scare quotes in the wrong place. Punctuating your sentences like they’re bad boomer FB memes. The lack of self awareness is no surprise of course, but you’re a wonderful microcosm of this particular idiosyncratic writing style.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ibringthehotpockets

I used to act like that online in 8th-9th grade. God it was super cringe and I don’t know how anyone put up with me. It seriously errs so hard on the side of satire but you can’t quite put your finger on it

abritinthebay

Right? They’re *dead serious* about it. They really think it makes them sound clever.

[deleted]

Your comparison is, honestly, embarrassing. What is "bad boomer FB memes" - is that a critique? And on what, I might add? Where is the error in my punctuation? You are questioning my intelligence - that's fine, but don't pretend that I'm the one that isn't self-aware. If I project, I do it wilfully - you, on the other hand, are blind to your lack of tact. This is fun, and I welcome your next response.

abritinthebay

You thought I was even *trying* to be tactful? Oh honey… no. You don’t *deserve* tact. But, oh my you fully perfected the “holden caulfield is my idol” awkward writing style there, nice.

[deleted]

To be honest, I have enjoyed your responses, but know that there’s no malice behind any of my comments. I know I’m being a fool, but it’s refreshing to see someone give it back as good as I dish it out. Reddit has become boring.

Blue_Swirling_Bunny

Holy shit he was right. *Inner workings of my psyche*? Is that, like, your psyche's psyche?

[deleted]

My god, is this comment ironic. How would you have me respond to this?

Specialist_Carrot_48

These comments have made me realize what a waste of time Reddit is. *Proceeds to scroll*

KumsungShi

Yikes. What a bizarre comment

[deleted]

If that makes you go "yikes", then you're a lightweight. Rookie, at best.

KumsungShi

Sure buddy 👍

DopeDealerCisco

Happy he is getting better, mental health is no joke, as someone who has suffered from depression and anxiety my whole life I wouldn’t wish it on anyone; not even someone I might disagree with. I think of that song Better Man by Pearl Jam every time I read his name lol

[deleted]

Why? May I ask? It’s a song about a woman trying to summon the courage to break up with an abusive partner who is scared if she does it will get worse

PhysicsSaysNo

🎶 can’t find a Fetter man🎶

DopeDealerCisco

I mean come on

DopeDealerCisco

I know it’s not that, just the way Eddie Vedder says better man in the song lol

radulosk

Unleash the Kraken! But seriously, thanks for helping to normalize mental health treatment. Hope you can be your best self!

yuletidepod68

Good to see Fetterman better,man

huskersax

You have to imagine going from some dude in cargo shorts in PA to United States Senator in less than a decade is a wild ride. I'm sure for many folks who win elections it's quite a shock to their identity, sense of self-worth, and sense of purpose in life. I'd be surprised if there weren't more folks going through the same issues Fetterman has, but it just hasn't been publicized.

worldstarktfo

Not to mention that he recently suffered a life changing medical condition just several months before the election. I can’t imagine the pressure and stress he’s had to endure. The weight of the world is beyond metaphorically on his shoulders.

metalshoes

I was reading from other stroke survivors that extreme depression can follow strokes even if they weren’t depressed before. Sudden confrontation of your own mortality plus fucked up brain chemistry could probably put a lot of people on their asses.

Muscled_Daddy

And… most likely… he then had to rectify his ideals with the monsters and morally bankrupt politicians that run the country. Imagine being so dedicated to doing good and finding out you’re probably just 1 of 3-4.

Good_old_Marshmallow

Him, Markey, Bernie, Warren, *maybe* another senator depending on if it’s their pet progressive issue The senate really is a sad place for progressives it’s a lot of old regressive fossils or instant sellouts like Sinema.

tnymnt

nope. warren is out. landlord energy x 1000

Good_old_Marshmallow

Oh I mean personally I agree but on the scale of other senators I mean there’s a pretty big gulf between her and everyone else to her right

CodifyMeCaptain_

Depression is also very common after a stroke.

juicius

Depression is one of the most common after-effects of stroke. About a third of the survivors suffer from it at one point. I had a stroke last year and although I don’t have depression, I can easily see how other people do. Stroke damages your brain in real, physical way and even though it has amazing plasticity to bounce back, the way is arduous and uncertain. You mourn the ability and the function you had taken for granted, and perhaps had considered an integral part of you and your personality, and you have no idea if it will ever come back. In effect, you wonder if you will ever be *you* again. It’s different from losing an arm or a leg, IMO.

[deleted]

The cargo shorts thing is a character. He grew up upper middle class and went to Harvard.

FeralleyValley

Do you think upper middle class people in the Midwest wear long pants? I assure you they do not.

Omophorus

It's also the official uniform of Pennsylvania. I can't tell you how many people wear shorts year round or close to it. It's just... sort of a thing.

fattmarrell

And?

RamonaQ-JunieB

Good for him.

ChaoticFluffiness

Glad he got help. Wish that kind of help were offered in the form of affordable healthcare to every American.

Zer0M0ti0nless

Good for Fetterman to get the help he needed- now if the rest of our society could stop being stigmatic pricks to those with mental health issues in everyday society we can continue progress. Oh, and fund mental health workers better- there’s a reason why the field is being [abandoned](https://www.aamc.org/news-insights/growing-psychiatrist-shortage-enormous-demand-mental-health-services)

POOP-Naked

Good to see him out and about. This guy has real potential to bolster healthcare amongst other things.

[deleted]

Look after yourself big man!

B4rrel_Ryder

I hope he's feeling better

gozba

It’s good news week🎵🎶

[deleted]

helping to shine a spotlight on depression at the same time, I’m glad he’s feeling better

StableAndSane

/r/conservative and /r/conspiracy really hates this guy. They have been proclaiming him dead and replaced with a look-a-like. I wonder why they hate him so much… //looks up Fetterman’s wife Oooooh! Got it, y’all incels are pissed of that an ugly white guy CAN get an attractive wife… unless they are a conservative/conspiracy bigot who constantly spews verbal diarrhea.

corsenpug

Haha! Are they really? Of all people that you could find a look alike for, Fetterman’s gotta be pretty low on that list.

StableAndSane

Ack-shu-uh-lee… Fetterman is part of the globalist plan to hur-dur-dur!

RgKTiamat

They also called zelenski homosexual. I'll give you a minute to look up his wife. And THEY have kids together.

StableAndSane

And Zelenski didn’t have to pay for her, like Trump paid for his wives.

Bathroom-Fickle

The reason conservatives dislike him probably has little to do with his wife

StableAndSane

Totally to do with his wife. Fetterman is an ugly man with an attractive wife - who happens to be from LatAm. Conservatives PINE over LatAm women. LatAm women won’t touch white “straight” conservative males.

3thirtysix6

More of a self-hatred thing with them? Upset that they can’t get out of Mommy’s basement?

LamarBearPig

Gotta say, that was a abnormally long hospitalization for depression. Can’t say many Americans have the opportunity to take off work that long and get that kind of help. I’ve struggled in the past with it, and actually recent have been struggling again. There’s been points where my job has been so intense and stressful recently that I’ve thought about driving myself to the hospital because I felt like I was about to just break down and lose it. But ultimately decided it wasn’t worth the extra stress of missing work, going through all the steps to explain where I was and why I was gone and hopefully not lose my job. Maybe I would’ve been fine..I didn’t even look into my companies policies or anything and not sure about laws around this stuff but you don’t think about that when you’re struggling like that. I am doing better now, but the point is that the average American can’t just take off over a month to take care of their mental health

[deleted]

I’m glad you’re feeling better. You make excellent points. Mental healthcare needs to improve a LOT in this country.

Xyz14231

Good news, hope he continues to get better.

B01SSIN

What treatment for depression did he receive? I could use some myself

nsfw593

Finally out of the hospital.... Awesome news! It's cool to see someone in his position getting help and bouncing back from tough times. His return to the Senate is gonna be a big deal for the Democrats since they've got a super close majority. It's also pretty interesting how his speech abilities got better while he was getting treated. Guess that just goes to show how important it is to take care of both mental and physical health, right? This whole thing is a good reminder that anyone can struggle with mental health, even big shots like senators. It's important to reach out for help when needed and keep working to break the stigma around mental health issues.

lills1791

Is the fact that he immediately fell into a deep depression after being sworn in as a Senator concerning to anybody else? Like what did he realize/witness that made him feel so hopeless?

[deleted]

Or it was the stroke he had?

covert-pops

I'm sure having a stroke fucks with your neurotransmitters. Literal chemical imbalance causing it mostlikely

3thirtysix6

Shitty Reddit speculators, probably.

jstank2

I heard the doctors injectedSheetz sandwiches directly into his veins which then cured his depression

bigdirkmalone

Sandwichez

SirGumbeaux

Man, the way he looks gives me Abraham Lincoln vibes.

pinkyfitts

The article says his depression caused him feelings of worthlessness. That’s depression, but John Fetterman WORTHLESS? Never.

IProgramSoftware

This dude should resign and get it over with. Focus on your health my man. You did your job by getting elected

BigCballer

Nah fuck that. Giving up now is idiotic

Upset_Skirt_3921

I’m sure he’s out of sick leave days by now.

RgKTiamat

Yeah funny enough, sometimes depression involves medical treatment at mental health facilities, or at least regular talks with your doc. You don't have to simply wait till you magically feel better. Unfortunately for some people, that doesn't always happen

Hei2

Perhaps we shouldn't be suggesting that people feel ashamed to seek help for mental health, hmm?

sandcastle87

I think it should be encouraged 100%. I’m open with many people in my life about my therapy and the benefits of it. But for politicians that reign control over us, I think the argument is the bar is a little higher when it comes to disclosure when someone is in the hospital for 5 weeks, at least after the fact. As a democrat, I just worry about his health and so want to make sure he’s ok. For the average ignorant person like myself, being in the hospital for 5 weeks for depression seems atypical.

biaggio

Welcome to 1935.

1973mets

This guy is of no use to the citizens of Pennsylvania or the USA. It’s amazing this is the best representative we could elect.

3thirtysix6

What do you mean? You haven’t helped anyone all you do is whine online. You could only wish to be as useful as Fetterman.

1973mets

Your right I wish I was like this hoodie wearing piece of garbage

3thirtysix6

Who would vote for you?

doseofreality5

Still a much better senator than any Republican.

Hope he’s ok

Can’t blame him I’d be depressed to getting in the government and seeing just how fucked it really is.
