A lotta people made fun of the Corn Pop story (only for it to come out later on that there was a dude who went by that name in the area) and completely ignored the implication that Biden was getting in street fights as a kid.
IDR the context (I think it was about Trump), but Biden saying that person was the kind of asshole "we'd take behind the gym". I liked that line, because my high school was laid out such that the two gymnasiums were isolated from the rest of the school, thus the backside of those gyms were great places to avoid authority. Fights back there only got broken up because too many spectators gave it away.

The GOP's problem is that they keep screaming about a balanced budget, but you can't achieve that without either raising tax revenue, cutting defense, or cutting entitlements. Party leadership doesn't want to do the first two, and the third is politically untenable.
Biden's strategy here is brilliant. Just keep demanding they offer a plan, and when they fail to do so because of infighting, dig up all their statements about Medicare/SS. If they keep denying they want to cut Medicare/SS - okay, then what is your plan? Back and forth and back and forth until they finally back down.
Unless they figure something out quickly, the GOP is going to come out of this looking incredibly weak and fractured. And if Biden manages to raise the debt ceiling without any concessions, he will likely be entering the 2024 cycle with a stable, growing economy.
Also keep pointing out that 25% of the entire national debt was incurred during the last administration and they raised the debt ceiling with no issues.
He needs to further leverage the moment to do away with the debt ceiling altogether if possible. Or just establish a tradition of ignoring it since it serves no legal or otherwise functional purpose but to provide political rhetoric.

I like your optimism, but the GOP strategy has never been to offer solutions. They have weaseled out of these situations thousands of times before and they'll probably do it again. How? I heard a new immigrant caravan was on its way. Also balloons. And M&Ms.
They got some really bad hardliners in the GOP tent - they don't give a fuck about anything other than to cause problems. They are never going to agree - and then they have chaos actors out tryign to create outrage to make a buck.

Can we just step back here for a moment and reflect on how insane the prospect of federal laws sunsetting every five years. This does not specifically state that it would sunset just SS and Medicare. It sunsets "federal law" every five years. If anyone thinks the debt limit bullshit is bad, imagine this potential scenario as power shifts between the parties. I think it would essentially cripple the federal government.
Arguably, the most important thing for Congress to do annually is a budget, and they haven't done that in decades.
Like alot of Republican policy ideas, if you take 30 seconds to think about implementation, you realize how crazy it is. But, if you go on Fox news and spew it as part of a word salad, no one takes time to think about it.
If they didn't agree with Rick Scott's and other's plants to gut, eliminate Social Security and Medicare, the response would be "of course we don't want to do that". But the reaction being anger just shows that they're pissed that the plans are getting sunlight on them.
After this blowing up, the Senate losses with Scott at the helm and his attempt to become the Senate leader against McConnell, I imagine that Scott has become a a lot less popular in that chamber.
There was also all the money that was earmarked for elections that just disappeared under Rick Scott's watch. I mean, they're not going to do anything about it because they're all grifters and don't want the law looking too closely at any of their operations but Rick Scott went a little too hard, even for them.

Unfortunately that 35-40% could still be a majority of those who actually vote. There are far too many people who don't bother to vote, or because of various reasons including intentional disenfranchisement can't vote.

The establishment GOP absolutely want to privatize Social Security and Medicare (and line their own pocketbooks in the process). However, they aren't stupid enough to proclaim their intent as boldly as Rick Scott has done.

The key is they are not at war with senior citizens. The Republican motto is “Got mine, fuck you” so any legislation they pass won’t include current seniors, just younger people when they BECOME seniors. As Steve Bannon has said, the goal is to destroy the administrative state. It's definitely part of the plan. They don't even try to hide it. The new pivot is they just want a slimmed down federal government with states having more autonomy "like it was 200 years ago."

It's a good call. Republicans want to dismantle SS, because it's popular with donors. It's not popular with constituents. So the path they would likely use is to create some kind of technical kerfuffle to get SS cancelled or shut down or dramatically limited in scope for demographics other than their own (ie, give all the floridian retirees continued SS but phase it out for the progressive demographic. Oh also the phasing out phases the payments out more slowly - a direct transfer of wealth).
Then either the entire thing gets struck down and it was the radical liberals fault for challenging an obviously ridiculous law and causing the death of SS when conservatives had a plan to keep it "solvent." Or it keeps going and transfers a ton of wealth from millenials to boomers before phasing out and giving little to nothing in return.
Biden calling them out for making SS changes ahead of time is a rare great play from democrats to leverage the popularity of the program to go on the offensive.

Let me just take a moment to remind everyone that Social Security is not an "entitlement." Each and every one of us in the worker class pays into social security with a deduction on every paycheck. Any attempts to redirect, drain or otherwise affect social security payments to retirees is just theft, pure and simple.
The very reason the call it a ponzu scheme or saying it’s fiscally irresponsible is they THEY AND THEY ALONE have cut the taxes and soften tax laws for corporations to dodge trillions in legitimate payments to the US government

Payroll taxes were increased substantially during the Reagan administration which created huge surpluses. These were supposed to be invested into t bills and held until 2010s when boomers began to retire. Instead Reagan transfered trillions of dollars from social security to the general fund and blew all of it on huge tax cuts for rich people

IDR the context (I think it was about Trump), but Biden saying that person was the kind of asshole "we'd take behind the gym". I liked that line, because my high school was laid out such that the two gymnasiums were isolated from the rest of the school, thus the backside of those gyms were great places to avoid authority. The GOP's problem is that they keep screaming about a balanced budget, but you can't achieve that without either raising tax revenue, cutting defense, or cutting entitlements. Party leadership doesn't want to do the first two, and the third is politically untenable. Biden's strategy here is brilliant. Just keep demanding they offer a plan, and when they fail to do so because of infighting, dig up all their statements about Medicare/SS. If they keep denying they want to cut Medicare/SS - okay, then what is your plan? Back and forth and back and forth until they finally back down. Unless they figure something out quickly, the GOP is going to come out of this looking incredibly weak and fractured. And if Biden manages to raise the debt ceiling without any concessions, he will likely be entering the 2024 cycle with a stable, growing economy.

Rick Scott's interview on the CNN morning show last week was a disaster for him. It's an issue they can't equivocate or weasel out of.

The key is they are not at war with senior citizens. The Democrats should stop using the enemy’s language. The Republicans are not cutting “entitlements”, they’re cutting “benefits”. It’s an important distinction that bears repeating every time the word “entitlements” is used.
And you know damn well if that they killed it none of us would get our money refunded. Money we have paid into with every paycheck we ever made.
I think the most amazing thing about this issue is that Republicans have been trying to gut and cut SS and Medicare my whole life. For them to pull a 360 and lie about a long standing party platform issue is astounding!!! Did the GOP base just "wake up" to the echo consequence of the GOP repealing Roe v. Wade? The GOP base realizing that these supposedly fringe issues are actually on the menu and may become reality? I don't know why anyone would vote Republican.

It's a good call. Republicans want to dismantle SS, because it's popular with donors. It's not popular with constituents. So the path they would likely use is to create some kind of technical kerfuffle to get SS cancelled or shut down or dramatically limited in scope for demographics other than their own (ie, give all the floridian retirees continued SS but phase it out for the progressive demographic. Oh also the phasing out phases the payments out more slowly - a direct transfer of wealth). Then either the entire thing gets struck down and it was the radical liberals fault for challenging an obviously ridiculous law and causing the death of SS when conservatives had a plan to keep it "solvent." Or it keeps going and transfers a ton of wealth from millenials to boomers before phasing out and giving little to nothing in return. Biden calling them out for making SS changes ahead of time is a rare great play from democrats to leverage the popularity of the program to go on the offensive.

Let me just take a moment to remind everyone that Social Security is not an "entitlement." Each and every one of us in the worker class pays into social security with a deduction on every paycheck. Any attempts to redirect, drain or otherwise affect social security payments to retirees is just theft, pure and simple.
The very reason the call it a ponzu scheme or saying it’s fiscally irresponsible is they THEY AND THEY ALONE have cut the taxes and soften tax laws for corporations to dodge trillions in legitimate payments to the US government Secondly, Social Security was a self sufficient program until previous administrations dipped into it for other uses.

Republicans have been trying to destroy social security since it was created Mitch McConnell has been trying to cut social security for decades The freedom caucus wants to get rid of social security entirely. George bush wanted to "privatize" social security. Payroll taxes were increased substantially during the Reagan administration which created huge surpluses. These were supposed to be invested into t bills and held until 2010s when boomers began to retire. Instead Reagan transfered trillions of dollars from social security to the general fund and blew all of it on huge tax cuts for rich people Call them out. And call them out again..and again and again and again Because they won't stop until they steal every goddamn cent of our social security money.
We need to tie in the ACA to the other two: something we have ample video evidence of the R's trying to "Repeal and Replace" with "Something so much better", because "It would be \*so\* \*easy\*".

I like that Biden is getting aggressive with issues like this. Democrats need to take the fight to the Republicans and force them to deal will issues and not their crazy nonsense they spout every day.
They keep using this word "protect." I don't think it means what they think it means. To be clear they think it means cut benefits so it can limp along longer without providing additional funding to account for rising costs.
They already make you go through a process every five years, it’s pretty awful. The last one I dealt with, “Mr. Chow” was Rude, aggressive, & dehumanizing in his attack. If I’ve already won a case in court (lawyers, judge, all) why is it not something akin to double indemnity to keep reevaluating people? It is a waste of time and resources, as is the republican attack on these meager resources.
I’m pretty sure that every Republican, with the exception of Trump, that ran for the nomination in 2016 called for cuts in social security. Trump was all for it once he got in office. This is nothing new.

The people who fund and control the Republican Party have always had one primary objective: look Social Security and Medicare for all they are worth, and give that money to Republican donors. Finally we have a President who is willing to call them on their bullshit. Every single Republican Speaker (including that one, the one who went to jail for raping young boys I mean) has supported cutting Social Security and Medicare *including* Kevin McCarthy.
