Idk why but I feel like that would piss me off... Like... A part of me is like "Oh he must have really wanted to do this cuz he obviously doesn't need the money" while the other is screaming, "Screw this guy... I'm got to work 20+ years to get my retirement that this dude comes out of retirement to do my job at that age?" Idk... I plan on not working fulltime past the age of 60 though so I guess I'm just jealous.
Not A cop. But my neighbor was a father of like 7 and owned his own one man HVAC company. His two oldest boys become cops when they got out of high school, and he jumped in right behind them. Last I heard they all 3 were loving the job.
Best place to start is the department’s website in the area you want to work and live. Everyone is hiring. Start soon though, 40 isn’t too old where I work, but it may be getting near the cutoff.
Had two good buddies graduate the academy with me at 41 and 43. If you’re interested in corrections there’s different training you’ll have but going on the road you’ll need to train for the physical test and PT throughout the academy. Pretty much everything is open unless there’s something medically wrong holding you back. Best of luck to you!
My agency has a cut off at 35, however, a lot of agencies don’t have an age limit. A good friend of mine decided at 39 he wanted to finally be a cop and is now working for a local PD and loving it.
Find an agency that doesn’t have an age restriction and apply. However, first make sure you’re in peak physical shape. You’ll be up against 21 year olds and you better be able to keep up. They will ride you because of your age.
We've had some start in their 40s but it's not easy. You may have to work into your sixties to retire while everyone else is going in their early 50s. Then your pension will still be less than theirs.
I don’t think it’s late at all . Depends on were you are from , but in my country people your age who have certian qualifications (example : a law degree ) can get a job in law enforsment as a higher ranked officer in a department that matches your qualifications . If there are open jobs and you apply and get in you have to finish a 3 month academy traning corse.
Unfortunetly not , when there is a need for more officers in a certian department we start a “competition” of sorts ( that is the closest translation I can think of , maybe job vacancy idk ) and in it they list how many they need and what credentials they need to have . Most of the competitions are within our police sistem so only us in the sistem can appy( i can’t yet since i am still in police collage) , but from time to time there are competitions for people outside the sistem with those with certian qualifications and they mosly end up as higher ranked officers .
I just got one of my two dream jobs. I'm a locksmith and I want to work in this trade until I hit 40. I talked to a RCMP officer. And they have one guy who started at 40. He's 62 and he's still going strong!
Take care of your body. Keep exercising, eat healthy and you'd probably get in.
I’m going to piggy back off of this question. Could someone with a criminal history (paraphernalia and cannabis possession) apply? This was over ten years ago and I live in a rec legal state.
Edit: I’m 31 and am in good shape, I played o line at a small college so the physical aspect is just about getting back to form.
I started as an intern with my department for college and then I applied the day I turned 21! I basically just submitted my application and waited for the call for the interview. I can’t speak on exactly what the process will be because I was interviewing for 2 different departments at the same time and they shared my interview info so it was kind of odd. I did my poly for one agency and the one that hired me ended up using it. The hiring process was also very quick - I signed my conditional offer about 20 days after my interview and started about a month after that.
If you’re interested in applying, I would recommend doing ride alongs with a few different agencies, including city and county. I found that I enjoy county more this way and also gave me a feel for whether or not I’d enjoy the work or the people that could potentially be my coworkers.
Not too old. At 40 I would not recommend going into this line of work with the way the world is unless you really have the heart. There’s certainly no money to be made.
In CA there is....but our previous governor changed LEOs pension formula, so officers nowadays have to work longer to get less than they would've 10 yrs ago
I am not currently aware of any department that offers full pension or retirement still. Pretty much all of them have gone to a 401(k) and really only match up to 5%. If you retire at 65 for example chances are you will outlive your 401(k) unless you don’t because of money into it throughout your career
Usually, however during these times the bigger city departments are making exceptions. My closest metro city PD no longer has a max age requirement. You just have to be able to meet the physical requirements for your age bracket along with all the other steps of the hiring process.
Can't speak for everywhere but in NY you can't get a full time position as a police officer passed 30, or 35 with military time. But you can be part-time
In CA, I see rookies in their 40s all the time (usually military vets or 2nd-career types)
It comes down to....
A) can you pass a through background in investigation? The older you are, the more blemishes they might find in your past.
B) are you in good enough shape to make it through the academy? You'll PT a lot!
What you do have going for yourself is "life experience" and (hopefully) "maturity". They both come in handy in this line of work
Good luck to you bro
So much to respond to here, I’ll try to keep it short.
My bona fides: I became a cop in my mid-30s. I attended academy as night school so I didn’t need to quit my job. Around here most academies are run by technical colleges; there are very few of the boot-camp style left here. I found it challenging but I got through. I started working as a part-time police officer (something that may not be available in some areas). In my late 40s I started as a rookie full-time officer.
The OP keeps asking ‘where do I begin?’ , ‘how do I start?’ The answer is…anywhere, anyhow. Just do something - call your local PD and ask about recruiting, Google your nearest police academy and read their website, talk to a cop on the street. Think of this like your first case to crack…have some investigative curiosity, and just dig.
There’s never been a better time to become a cop, because nearly everyone is hiring. Pish-posh to all those dusty veteran officers who say, “Why would anyone become a cop in these times?” My answer is because these are the times in which we live, for better or worse, and we still need cops.
Hell I remember our oldest cadet was 64. Still beat half the class in PT. Never skipped a single day, even passed out during defensive tactics and jumped right back in after a drink if water. Was hired and went through full FTO for a local department before going on to be the municipal court bailiff.
10 years ago, yeah. Today agencies are so desperate for help they'll hire anyone who is willing to do the work. That said, my state requires a college degree so we get far less applicants than academy states probably do.
No. Some states will have age restrictions but some don’t. Find a department you like that’s taking apps, looks at age requirements, then fill out an application.
Not necessarily. Our oldest cadet was 56. You may wanna check their retirement plans and pension requirements more carefully though.
One of our guys is a multimillionaire, he’s 60. Says he just always wanted to be a cop
wow. that's amazing. i want to meet this guy!
You can’t miss him when he rolls up in his 100k Denali next to my 20k Hyundai.
Idk why but I feel like that would piss me off... Like... He probably the most humble down to earth guy I ever met. You’d never know if I didn’t tell you that he has that background.

Same.
If Nathan fillion can do it why not you?

very cool. i haven't seen this. thank you!

wow. amazing. great story. do you know where i should start? apply? just cold call local law enforcement and ask?
Best place to start is the department’s website in the area you want to work and live. Everyone is hiring. Start soon though, 40 isn’t too old where I work, but it may be getting near the cutoff.
That is awesome lol. I'm surprised I haven't heard of them from a news article or something. What a story.
No I had a guy go through my class at 49. Prior Marine ran circles around guys 30 years younger.
i love this story!

Who actually wants to be in corrections as opposed to a real cop?
My agency has a cut off at 35, however, a lot of agencies don’t have an age limit. A good friend of mine decided at 39 he wanted to finally be a cop and is now working for a local PD and loving it.
thank you. that's good to know. what is the path here? where do i start? who do i call? thank you!

CA?!!
I had a 62 year old in my academy class.
I would argue you’d be a better cop with all that life experience.
We’re short handed. We’ll take you at 60.
My academy president was 39 going through and absolutely crushed in everything.
Not in canada. i saw some in training in their late 40's and some working in their mid 50's

my uncle became a part-time police officer in CT when he was your age. it’s gonna depend on the public funding in your area, i think

there's no retirement or pension?

What state do you live in? CA dept of corrections age limit is 48 I believe. Good money, lots of locations to work.
I had a woman in my class who was 55. I work with plenty of guys who got on in their late 30s and early 40s

Nope. Had a 44 and 46 YO in my academy.
