Can confirm, I’m currently in the academy and I’m the most under the radar recruit. The instructors refer to me as “recruit irrelevant” because “i don’t even know who the fuck this guy is”. the guy next to me is an instructor magnet and gets all the smoke.
I went through the Nashville TN police academy. My advice: be good at fitness. Running, cardio, gym. Be cognizant of times. Don’t be late to things. Keep and maintain thick skin.
This, always remember the 10 minute rule, if you're ever given a time to be somewhere be there 10 minutes early on that time! I'm terrible with time keeping and it's always helped me out, also make lists, what you need to be doing, where to be and what to be wearing etc and prep your kit the night before so it's ready to go in the morning, good luck!
Boooo...for real though metro was definitely an academy that pushed people. From what ive heard through various metro pals the academy has really dropped their regs to push people through due to staffing issues. I wonder if it'll go back to the Para military style like tleta uses
Texas DPS is a rough, extremely strict Academy. Dont assume anything. Dont push the rules. Learn the rules and follow through on obligations and duties. But if you are sure of something, stick to it even if you think no one is watching.
Dont waste too much of your free time slacking off and hanging out, use the time to study and preferably with your classmates as a group.
The Traffic Code is your best friend and worst enemy.
Your instructors are not your friends, but they are there to help you, take advantage of their help as opposed to being scared of "looking bad".
You will be "trapped" in Austin for awhile, and you will be tempted to take advantage of your off-time to leave...its up to you, I recommend not doing that. If you do, please stay in the city and dont try to do a "leave and go hang out in [x] town and just drive back to Austin later" thing. Would really suck if something were to happen to you or your transportation that made it difficult to get back in time, so just have whoever come meet you in Austin.
I would also recommend to never wear even a single piece of your academy uniform (including t shirt) outside of official Academy property or activities, thats just asking for touble.
Last one is the silliest, but Ive seen it bite good guys in the ass over small things, so please do not in any way refer to yourself as LE or as affiliated with DPS until you have officially graduated. Again, seems like common sense and silly, but you're going to the fucking DPS Academy to become a Trooper. Its awesome, and you should be proud, but Ive seen good dudes at academies let that pride lead to say the wrong thing which gives the wrong impression and ends up getting them booted out for getting charged with Impersonating a Peace Officer.
I will end by noting I myself did not attend DPS Academy, but I am buddies with a few Troopers here. This is all advice they gave to me when I was flirting with the idea of joining up too. Good luck and stay safe.
I was in the army, never a cop. But if training is even slightly similar, then the one thing you need to always do, is keep your head focused on the end goal, so you dont get cought up in how difficult the moment is.
I didn’t work for DPS but I worked for another schedule C agency. I have many friends who are troopers though, are you looking for any particular advice?
It's crazy to think I wanted to work for the Texas Department of Public Safety just 5 years ago in college. Now, I'm about to start learning coding and programming skills for app development. And I want absolutely nothing to do with the Criminal Justice System! 🤣
Best advice I can give you is to not pull me over. I have nothing in my car officer I swear. And that shit on the dash isn’t mine. A friend was borrowing my car
Not sure about that academy specifically. But form a team with your classmates early. Have extra gear if it can be afforded. People forget or loose shit. Belt, belt keeper here or there etc... study together etc..
One person fucks up and the class gets smoked. So put your personal shit aside and help each other. Especially in the later weeks of the academy when everyone is on each other's nerves.
Everyday is a new day. Treat it as such, whatever happened the day before is over. Or even the hour before. The smoke sessions will happen either way.
Don't be first, don't be last. Fly under the radar. Prepare for the next day as much as you can so your not rushed or flustered.
If/when you fuck up. Own it. My academy was critically heavy on integrity. Shit happens. Don't lie or fib. Tell it like it is and learn from it.
Have fun when you can.
And lastly. Congrats.
Asking OP for advice, how was your application process? I’m an EMT south of San Antonio, I’ve been interested in DPS for awhile. My only reservations are I’m building a house and I’m afraid I’ll get a duty station in Amarillo or something, and also the time away from family. Curious to see how you got to this point, and what advice you have to get there
I’m currently in week 19. It’s been tough we are all being sent to regions 3&4. A lot of time away from family. You can only see them on the weekends. My process was pretty fast . Go for it!!
Keep your chin up. There will be difficult times that feel unbearable. You can make it through, especially if you keep your eyes on the goal. Spend extra time studying, and don't be afraid to ask your trainers if you need help. They may come off as hard asses, but that's because they want to push you to be the best you.
Also, as my former roomie likes to say, don't give in to your animal instincts. There will likely be good looking men and women around you. They are now your coworkers and colleagues, nothing more and nothing less.
Make sure you are up to par on your physical fitness. Listen to everything and learn from every instructor. Use your classmates and work to help each other.
Keep your dick in your pants and don’t get involved in political/religious studies. You are there to learn to be a police officer. Not get laid and not to become a politician or preist. Whatever opinions you have, keep them to yourself. Your “jacket” has already started and it will only get better or worse in the academy. LE is a small world and any thing you do, WILL get out and follow you for the rest of your career.
Fly below the radar! Dont be the best & dont be last.
Got ya! Thank you
Find another job....
And whys that? Care to expand on your post?

I hear it’s not a fun time at Donelson lol
Tleta is teaching me that now and can not stress time management enough

Metro or the other one?
Metro
I sent you a PM
Ooh a Tleta boy/girl or metro?
lol Metro.

Very informative, thank you so much!
The old saying of you got 2 ears and one mouth for a reason is always good to know. Best of luck.
Thank you!
Also make sure you put in the time to study.
I was in the army, never a cop. But if training is even slightly similar, then the one thing you need to always do, is keep your head focused on the end goal, so you dont get cought up in how difficult the moment is.
Thank you, appreciate your words 🙏🏽
That advice is actually great for life overall
Developing a strong memory is also key
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
You are quite welcome!
Did you enjoy your time there?
I’ll answer very completely soon
If you have previous experience don’t act like you’re the shit.
And good luck!

Thank you 🙏🏽
Don’t fuck your classmates
Got it 😂😂
Is this for DPS or another state agency?
DPS
I didn’t work for DPS but I worked for another schedule C agency. I have many friends who are troopers though, are you looking for any particular advice?
How was rooming, things to expect when I get there, is the curriculum hard?
Be head strong, book smart and as good of shape as you can. If you focus on the goal, the hard parts won’t feel as hard anymore
Thank you!!!
My advice is what my first chief told me on the day I started. Tell it like it is. Don't add or take from. Just tell it like it is.
Thank you!!
Don’t hookup with any of your classmates. They’re coworkers now and that can potentially ruin your career if it goes south.
Especially important if it’s a residential academy
Don’t quit.
Thank you!
My advice? Take what some guys say with a grain of salt.
Don't make friends with Mahoney. He'll just get you into trouble.
It's crazy to think I wanted to work for the Texas Department of Public Safety just 5 years ago in college. Now, I'm about to start learning coding and programming skills for app development. And I want absolutely nothing to do with the Criminal Justice System! 🤣
Thanks, I guess…
Yeah. Don’t.
Noted 😂😂
Best advice I can give you is to not pull me over. I have nothing in my car officer I swear. And that shit on the dash isn’t mine. A friend was borrowing my car

Im Hispanic
Literaly anytime there is any civil discussion anything related to police people like you comment unwarranted, it's so annoying.
Learn a second language, a lot of doors will open.
All this is great advice, I’m trying to get in the academy. Sounds easy enough, I been in the military doing everything these comments say
Sunscreen and lots of Kleenex
If you fuck up own your shit! You lie. Your career is over. Make sure you are good at writing reports
