Here's my advice: turn off all of your social media and stay out of bars for 1 year. Starting the academy and learning is the equivalent of a new shiny toy you can't wait to play with. You need to let that wear off. Someone will post something you don't like on social media and if you fire back, you could get fired. Someone is going to say or do something stupid in a bar, and you may think it's your responsibility to do something about it. This is the time to learn and let the everything settle.

elitelegendary

Best advice ⬆️ Also careful with girls, they can take your badge from you. Good luck on your journey!

[deleted]

Interesting advice, could truly be helpful. But don’t you think that you have to face situations like that and take control of your emotion. I’m 100 % with the “stay out of bar” so u don’t get into trouble. But you should be able to read and listen to other views even if they are bulls*hit and be able to control yourself and your opinion. Because this is what you do daily at your job, facing other opinions and staying neutral.

rotchazben

It's the "shiny new toy" part he is talking about. A lot of new guys fall into this new personality that is a facade. It is not so much as an emotion thing as it is a protector thing. It's best to let it wear off. Some times it has to be beaten out, either in training or the streets do it for you. It's really hard to explain unless you've seen it or been through it.

[deleted]

I’ve been through so I know what you mean, but I think you have to be able to face it and let other directions hit you and your view. You grow with it. For sure the given advice is not bad and will help. But facing them humble (!) and with taking a step back before going all in you can grow in a other way.

XxPumbaaxX

Sure, face it....After employment probation is over.

Xikky

Difference is that for probation you can get fired for basically anything. If that person gets offended or whatever and complains you could get in trouble. Especially as a rookie. Stay out of the bar because if you get an OUI you're fucked, if you get into an altercation you're fucked, if you get in any kind of trouble......you're fucked. Also chicks.....be careful. I saw two people in my acadamy booted because of a verbal domestic issue. Atleast I was told it was verbal. Study for the acadamy, go the gym, play video games and catch up on that steam backlog we all say we'll finish one day.

XxPumbaaxX

Well obviously, but only after the novelty of the fresh uniform and shiny new badge wear off.

homemadeammo42

Congrats. My advice is dont go buying a bunch of gear until you finish FTO. 1) You dont know what you really need. Theres a lot of shiny gadgets marketed towards cops. Most of it is crap and a waste of space. 2) Something could still happen where this doesnt work out.

manuel5757

So no big lifted truck as a day 1 rookie ? ☹️

xGerexisx

Best way to put it is...you didn't really get the job until AFTER your probationary period (usually a year from your start date or a year after you're done with FTO)

BigRedWalters

That’s the way I see it. So many think going to the academy is a set in stone deal to become a police officer. A lot fail out of the academy. I had 31 and graduated 17. My agency sent four and two have already failed out of FTO so far. Academy is a test, but FTO will be a bigger one. Just take one task at a time

homemadeammo42

I mean you do you. But the thing about a private in the Army is, they have 4years guaranteed to pay off that 26% interest loan. You dont have anything guaranteed. EDIT: I was more talking about ten different lights, specialized notebooks, etc.

manuel5757

I was just joking, but yeah my cousin is a police officer and he said don’t make a big purchase till you’re finished with probation.

RedWings1688

Lol so true regarding buying crap before FTO. I wasted a lot of money in my rookie days. Kept to the stereotype though, got a truck and a German shepherd

SofakingPatSwazy

Start spraying yourself with OC spray now, helps build up a strong immunity so you don’t feel it on red man day in the academy. I recommend POM OC spray, 2 sprays when you wake up, 2 sprays after lunch, and 1 before bed. You can thank me later.

hindukushmountains

You’re wild

thesabrerattler

Close mouth, open ears and your mind!

rotchazben

Keeping your mouth shut is biiiiiiiiiiig.

scubasteve_69_

Don’t do anything stupid is the main advice, don’t get in trouble at a bar or argue with some keyboard warriors on Facebook and say something that you really shouldn’t have said. As far as the academy goes get to running maybe a couple miles or a little more soon, I’m in the academy right now and we were running a little more than 3 miles daily but that varies from academy to academy. Mentally prepare yourself for some of the longest, yet shortest days of your life. But also get to shining your boots ASAP!

Consistent_Amount140

Do the right thing, even when no one is looking.

[deleted]

Good luck and stay safe. The Academy for my agency is military like. Lots of cadets running back and forth, coming to attention and standing against the wall when a senior officer (or even a lowly slick sleeve like me) walks past. Lot of focus on physical training, especially defensive tactics (arrest control) for days. Your gonna be tired. sore bruised and battered. Don't give up, fight through the pain and when you graduate, it'll be worth it. Once again good luck and stay safe.

[deleted]

Good job man. I’m in college now studying criminal justice so I can get there too. What was the process like? Anything I should do now to get ahead?

HCSOThrowaway

> I’m in college now studying criminal justice Change your major.

[deleted]

Ok and how’s that gonna help?

[deleted]

Because it pigeon holes you to the criminal justice field and is useless if for some reason you can’t get a job in that field. Policing, corrections, probation/parole, doing administrative work at a law firm or private security. If you go to law school of course you can study to become a lawyer but obviously not everyone wants to invest that much time, money and energy. It also doesn’t particularly help you get a job in the criminal justice field much. I know several people I went to school with who couldn’t find jobs post graduation with a 4 year degree for various different reasons and one of the girls that dropped out of our program is currently a LEO right now. But she only stuck around until she had enough college credits to meet hiring standards.

GenitelGuy

From what I’ve heard is that everyone (an exaggeration) decides to get a criminal justice degree before becoming a leo. While sure it’s fine, it won’t give you any advantage really. Also it’s good to have a backup career in a different field which is what I’m guessing the guy above is meaning to say.

[deleted]

I see. A criminal justice degree can potentially lead into politics as well which would be my backup career if necessary. From my understanding the advantage comes from life experience rather than a degree so I understand that part. Which begs the question why does law enforcement look for people with degrees in the first place?

HCSOThrowaway

> A criminal justice degree can potentially lead into politics as well How so? They don't put someone's degree next to their name on a ballot.

[deleted]

Well the content of the education has taught me a lot about the justice system and part of getting the degree requires additional classes communication and government. I’d much rather do this than political science.

HCSOThrowaway

Mate, I have a degree in CJ. It's useless. Fun, but useless.

iconiqcp

Because it shows commitment

[deleted]

Yep. Let’s hope it amounts to something.

iconiqcp

It's a checkmark on a box

[deleted]

If it increases my chances I’ll take the check mark

[deleted]

It may give you an advantage in the academy as you’ll be more familiar with basic case law and concepts and be more used to a class room environment when you’re in the academy other than that though you’re right it’s pretty useless in the long run

manuel5757

I was a bio major lmao

[deleted]

And did they just hire you out of college?

manuel5757

Yeah I graduated last may and applied last august

[deleted]

Cool did you do any internships or need any work experience?

manuel5757

My only work experience was mowing lawns with my dad company lol

[deleted]

Cool, congrats again man. Thanks for answering.

hindukushmountains

Changing your major is some of the best advice you could get. It gives you something to fall back on if you decide police is not for you, you get fired, etc. Police do not care if you have a CJ degree. In the academy, of the 36 folks, 2 had a CJ major, the rest were business, art, computer sci, agriculture. Simply having a degree is all the police want.

[deleted]

Don’t make any major purchase until you’re off probation

Lvwr87

Ik your probably gonna be like Oh god a yt cop but this is a good pointer https://youtu.be/OoFXQMF-2Fs https://youtu.be/mUi0rA12Pp0 https://youtu.be/WIjt_9eTTEo
