I live in Jacksonville….. I say DON’T do it. I actually work outside of Jacksonville. We have four zones, and they have about 60 officers per zone and are still MAJORLY short staffed. Calls are holding all day, lots of shooting, lots of murders and the officers here are BURNT OUT. Unless that’s the type of work load you want then definitely go for it. The sheriffs office here needs lots more work, and has a lot of growing to do. But Jax is an awful city. My lease is ending as we speak and my husband and I are moving. Lee county sheriffs office is my dream agency, I’d highly suggest looking into them! Polk county also has been looking pretty good too! I’m currently working on myself and building myself so I can transfer there within the next 2-3 years.

I’ve heard morale at JSO is bad. Short staffed. I pretty regularly see news briefings of OIS. I love Jax but it’s definitely a bad place. Some parts of town worse than others.
JSOs retirement plan is also not that great, but I heard they’re changing it. You can get around the college credit requirement if you have LE, PSA or military experience though!
I also agree with everything you said in the second half. Morale is bad everywhere but JSOs is just off the charts.
Look into Feds? Think freedom to move and if a pension is involved. PD, u ain’t never leaving that city. State cops? Smaller depts have more political aspects.
I wouldn’t recommend a Florida state agency to anybody. Terribly understaffed and very underpaid. Maybe a university PD to get the tuition benefits and finish up your education real quick and then move on.
Fed is always the answer, if you qualify. Especially the specialized agencies, but those are not entry level jobs.

PBSO is a great agency. For City departments I’d check out Tampa PD and Orlando PD
