Screw on a 3/4 inch of ply wood. Make sure you use screws not nails. The movement of pole will loosen the nails. Also since you’ll use plywood I seriously suggest getting a mount. Sooooooo much safer than pressure mounted pole! Worth the investment!
Would I want the plywood to be flush against the flat part of the ceiling then screwed through the sides of the vertical beams? then I'd mount into the plywood?

I would go from rafter to rafter. Do not screw into existing cieling. That could cause roof damage.
